    Shawn's comment at 20:41 is an excellent example of why auto life jackets are a good idea. If you go in the drink in cold water you quickly lose the use of your arms hands and legs and are invariably unable to help yourself. Something that should be borne in mind when designing a casualty retrieval system.
    I bet the warm shower was bliss.

    Nothing more beautiful than crossing that strait in calm seas, not much worse when it gets nasty out there. If you get the tides right it can shave hours off the trip.

    Love the solitude of winter cruising. Shaun buy a 6 pack of Old Style and stick a couple of pretzels in the freezer for when Elizabeth gets cabin fever.. btw everyone knows hood canal is 15-20 degrees warmer than the islands. Lol. Thanks for taking the plunge. Last thing. Elizabeth sleep in the pilot berth on those scary nights. I do the same thing.

    Hey guys, I want to see you get Jim and Rosie to jump in the water in the winter too. That would be a hoot. But I have to admit that with you being from Wisconsin, I'd think that having water that's liquid instead of a solid would be nice for a change!!!
    By the way, how come we don't see any Leinies on the boat............There's "73 people who care" that would appreciate the advertising!!!

    Nice job with the polar plunge. I live in northeast so pretty used to cold water-especially since I am a diver. Thankfully I have a drysuit though. Only did a polar plunge once and it was freezing even before getting in the water. Mr Sully could not get off the boat fast enough it looked like.

    During my Vietnam days in the Navy, we occasionally returned to Bremerton... but before we did we had to drop all munitions off in a facility in the Hood canal. They also do some torpedo testing in the hood. I personally know of two SEALS who trained for cold water activities up here, I was their emergency support. You don't have to walk on ice in order to get the polar dip experience. I'm very impressed to see your gutsy New Year dip.... Brrrrrrrrrrr. Great video! We generally stern tie to shore in the cove at Jones Island. We don't have to worry about swinging into anyone. I'm curious why your aversion to mooring buoys. I personally feel safer on a buoy than the anchor if the wind comes up. (41' boat similar windage to yours) The ones at Eagle Harbor are DNR and are quite stout.

      We don’t like when the ball hits the hull when conditions are calm and don’t know how well maintained they are to hold our boat better than our anchor, so we’d rather anchor.

    Every dinghy should be packed with a lightweight wet suit, fins, mask and snorkel in case you have to swim back to the boat. I had to do that, once, when the water was a balmy 34 degrees. No wet suit. Just jeans, a jacket and a PFD. Shoes off and tied to my sides. Thank goodness for the PFD, too. Even though I was an outstanding swimmer, I was exhausted after that 100 yard swim, and could barely climb back in the boat.

    Just a thought one day I got my anchor caught in the rocks it would not come out, so I had an idea, let me pull straight up over top of the anchor, there was maybe 1 foot sea so all I did then was tied the anchor line off to the bow of the boat and I let the bouncing of the boat with the waves pulled it loose in about five minutes.I figured if it worked its way into the rocks he could work its way out I was successful

    Consider Mackaya Harbor on the south end of Lopez as a stop over spot. Not quite as far of a run to get into Griffin Bay when coming from the south plus you don't have to manage your timing around Cattle Pass currents. It's possible to get tucked in pretty snug on the southern end of Barlow Bay. Depending on what the strait is doing you may get a little roll coming into the anchorage but hey roll is in your future based your on cruising plans.

    Thanks again for the vid. A question from Hamburg Germany. Once you are both bathing the video camera seems to be monitoring you both whilst positioned on Starbord aft. But who is controlling the drone to see you from a distance. What a miracle to me. Thanks for letting us know. rgds

      We had the drone hover in place to film us 👍

    Why not take a mooring ball at Jones Island? Boats up to 45’ can use them - is the nord too heavy?

    • @mvfreedom
      @mvfreedom  3 роки тому +1

      We don’t typically like balls since they can hit the hull if seas are calm and also because we don’t know how well they’re maintained to hold us better than our anchor. The Rocna is pretty amazing.

      @@mvfreedom makes sense! I am planning to upgrade to a rocna this season. Maybe i will be more confident in my anchor then 😂

    In this video when you pulled up anchor from Griffin Bay. The drone shot showed 3 lines going into the water. Of course one being the anchor , what are the other two lines. Second part of question is why are they used and how do you properly use them. Can you maybe answer this in your Q & A. We are Criss and DeeDee from Sacramento area. Feel free to reach out to us when you plan the mentioned trip to the Sacramento River area. We watch you faithfully and are avid boaters. We have a Silverton 351 sedan cruiser hard top fly bridge...please keep up the content. We love watching. I have to wait for my wife to watch or she get mad. We enjoy watching together ❤.

      The two other lines are called Anchor Bridle. Mainly, it takes a lot of stress of the deck hardware, the windless, and any hardware there.

      @@gregbluefinstudios4658 Also tends to make things a bit quieter not listing to the chain move around on the pulpit and helps with tracking back and forth in a wind.

    What is the wing you were talking about when you use it in conjunction with the bow thruster to get off the dock?

    • @mvfreedom
      @mvfreedom  3 роки тому

      That’s our “wing” engine which is a backup in case anything were to happen with the main engine.

    You would think they would have the none anchor areas on the charts, no?

    • @mvfreedom

      It’s voluntary which could be why.

      Plus the papercharts can be very old. If you don't update your electronic charts there maybe no notice to Mariners. It changes.

    Thank you for sharing. Have u ever pondered sailing to Hawaii. Nordhavn seems to be the perfect boat for it at 8knots (I think :)

    • @mvfreedom

      Yes, in fact our boat has already been there but before we owned her. They historically have very strict animal quarantine laws which is why that’s not on the top of our list, but we’d certainly love to get there at some point.

    What were you carrying in the little case when you went ashore and about how much does it cost to rent a slip for a boat that size? Thanks just curious

    • @mvfreedom
      @mvfreedom  3 роки тому +1

      It was the Mavic mini drone. And slip fees vary greatly and increase if you’re living aboard, all marinas have slip rates posted.
