  • Happy Sunday Funday!
    Welcome back to our adventures in Port Gamble, WA...a hidden gem in the Pacific Northwest! Located near the Hood Canal Bridge, both the bay and the 170 year old logging town of Port Gamble are fantastic spots to explore. The anchorage is scenic, quiet, beautiful and close to a lot of interesting nooks and crannies. And the town makes you feel like you're right back in 1853 when it was founded due to restoration efforts to maintain its charm.
    Although there's no marina, guest moorage space or dinghy dock, there's plenty of space on the nearby pebble beach to land a dinghy and explore all that the town has to offer. We enjoyed fantastic hiking, the iconic Port Gamble General Store, the locally owned WISH gift shop and a delicious eatery Scratch Kitchen. FYI, the clams are to DIE FOR!
    Enjoy!

    Re wind and currents - in the PacNW don’t forget about “wind against current” and how that impacts safety. I imagine you’ve had one or two instances where you didn’t really have a choice on timing and experienced the joys of steep, high, and short-period waves! Thanks for highlighting Port Gamble. We’ve been there often on “tours” with the Local Porsche club but it is really different when seen from the water and even with all of our visits we’ve managed to overlook the extensive trail networks. As always, thanks for all the work you do helping us revisit favorites and discover new places!

    As a private airplane pilot, you have to love and use the checklist. It seems as if they are a outstanding ideal for a boat also. Awesome video as usual. Have a great week.

    Beach anchor lessons for the dinghy. Forget the bungee cord. Tie a long line to the front of the anchor which can pull it loose and back to shore. Place the anchor teetering on the boat gunnel give the boat a big push out from the beach and hold and Bae out The Long Beach line when it reaches the end Jerk it so the anchor falls off in the water and the boat anchors itself. Tie the Longline off on shore when you get back and wants the boat pull the long front line of anchor and boat back to shore.

    Love the checklist portion of this episode. It's easy to run checklists and flip switches but to understand those systems and what is actually happening is something else. Checklists always assume everything is working as per specification. Great episode guys. Really enjoy your channel.

    So your comment that all boats were female - In French, bateau (Boat), navire (ship), vaisseau (vessel) and trawler (chalutier) are all masculine nouns. Just an observation.

    We have found that XTRATUF boots are a great option for beaching our dingy in cold weather, in the PNW. No more worrying about wet/cold socks/sneakers after an accidental dunking while getting on/off the dinghy. The official foot-wear of Alaska!

    Rather than a bungee Anchor Buddy, I tie a long trip line to the head of the anchor, position the anchor on the bow and give the dinghy a good push off the beach. You can get the boat 30-40 feet off the beach, pull the trip line, pop the anchor off the bow and be good to go even on an outgoing tide.

    Back in my Navy days (the early sixties) we would access facilities in the Hood Canal requiring us to go through the floating bridge. You should look into exploring the rest of the Hood when you get a chance. Port Gamble also has a historic graveyard with Indian history, I could see it in the background with a white fence around it (12:39 & 14:21 marker). I totally envy your ability to explore the treasures of the Pacific Northwest. Jacques Cousteau called this region his second most favorite place to explore in all the world... I slightly disagree but then I'm from this region.

    In an answer to the Freedom Survey of the week, I would take the boat big enough to live aboard. The reason being the house and the boat are both going to require cleaning and maintenance. If you only have one, you only have one thing to clean and maintain not two. Yet only the boat allows you to travel and change the scenery outside on a regular basis.

    That’s the first time I’ve seen a banana slug in over 40 years! I last saw one in a place down the California coast south of San Francisco where they have a camp that kids in the 6th grade would go for a week. Each cabin would have 8-10 kids plus one high school aged kid to keep an eye on them. Of course the cabins were segregated by sex so boys in one and girls in another. I got to go once in 6th grade and several times when I was in high school. Kissing a banana slug was like a rite of passage lol. I haven’t thought of that place in years so thanks for the memories lol

As Floridians (who currently live in Texas) we are very familiar with the canals and inter-coastal of South Florida (my husband is from Palm beach gardens area). Question for you - would you ever consider relocating the boat to South Florida for better yearly weather, access to the Caribbean, etc etc? We have a lot of Nordhavns in South Florida too. Are thinking of longer away from home voyages like down to Oregon, along California coast or up to Alaska? Those steamed clams looked awesome! lol the pixels on the dogs genitals lol.

    The history of the town is cool. It’s a company town. Literally still owned by the same company, Pope and Talbot. It used to be all employee housing. I’m sure some former employees still live there. Everything is still leased or rented to the occupants from Pope and Talbot. Or at least that’s my understanding. Although they went through bankruptcy in 08’ so that could have changed.

      Boats are female, because they don't like being ignored. They also capture your soul and heart.

    I was always under the impression (rightly or wrongly) that canals involved some sort of construction to make it navigable; and scratch my head as too what was "constructed" to make the Hood Canal. Is there some history as to why this inlet was named canal?

      Not sure but we’ll do our research and let you know when we go farther down next month!

    Why do you leave the door open on the back of the boat when you leave on the dingy? How far does the dingy travel?

    • @mvfreedom
      @mvfreedom  3 роки тому +2

      It latches open so we just leave it open!

    I enjoy your vids and Q&A sections, thank you.
    Question:
    I see many trawlers with boat decks, davits, and dinghies. And I see a few folks with little electric scooters.
    But I never see anyone that stores a Vespa (or equivalent) on their boat deck.
    It seems to me that it would be easy to lift down when docked. Even a golf cart seems doable.
    Why is it that no one seems to do this?
    Thank you?

    • @mvfreedom
      @mvfreedom  3 роки тому +2

      You probably could. Our guess is that they’re just too big and more of a liability in heavy seas, so why bother when you can safely stow a folding bike or scooter?

      I'll add that salt water is really rough on things "stored" on a deck. Even when covered, the salt air is unforgiving. I've seen mountain bikes held together by rust that no longer even functioned.

    As always, loved the video... I do have one question and that is have you ever lost your phone into the ocean or dropped it overboard you're very good on the videos and I was just wondering why you make these videos has an accident ever occurred or do you have a list of bloopers that you wouldn't mind showing sometimes

    • @mvfreedom
      @mvfreedom  3 роки тому

      Bloopers is a good idea! Luckily we’re SUPER diligent with our phones and camera gear to avoid a costly mishap overboard, let’s hope it stays that way 🤞🤞🤞

    A length of elastic cord in a piece of hose protector is pretty cheap way to get the dink off the beach. Airhead is one brand, lousy hardware (www.airhead.com/products/anchor-bungee). I have used a looped line, shore stake, and simple pulley at the anchor and land end (tether line with a snap to the boat) - I use floating poly line - lost one set up to some rocks - not a nice swim in street clothes + cold water. Bob Jarrard (your boat is beyond wonderful - good for you two)
