"Whoa, Shawn!" Elizabeth, that is exactly what I said. Boat work or house work? Well, a house in these parts means cleaning those gutters every fall, dealing with moss on the roof, cutting back tree limbs, putting up the Christmas Lights, taking them back down, mowing the grass, pulling weeds, dealing with your neighbor's bamboo taking over your yard, dragging all the recycling bins back and forth each week, vacuuming, steam cleaning carpets, flooded basements, etc. And then, you get to fix the house after a 6+ story tree tips over into your bedroom during our winter storms like that one back in January. The MV Freedom has a lot of work because Shawn makes Martha Stewart look like a slob. How many boats currently in Shilshole meet Shawn's standards? One, and you are living on it :)) p.s. I love your hair.
Haha that’s funny! Shawn’s been talking about starting a boat brokerage business that only offers boats that meet his cleanliness and maintenance standards. He hates seeing boats in poor condition especially when they’re for sale!
@@mvfreedom - That is a brilliant idea! I think you two would be great doing something like that and I think you would really, really enjoy it. I think you guys would also be great at group and private classes. Where does one learn how to take a boat through the Ballard locks? How does one sail into another marina? Are the rules the same for all marinas? Is there guest parking? And for the love of God and all things holy, what do you do when someone throws you a rope? My boating experience involves a canoe rental at the UW:)) I had planned on kayaking classes until COVID shut us all down but I have a long, long way to go before I can sail off to Samoa to have some coconut cream crab with friends.
My wife and I lived on a 30ft sloop and traveled for almost 20 years together. We visited so many places you both seem to enjoy as well. We had to sell our boat and give up the lifesyle finally but wanted to tell you how much we enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing them and our best wishes to you both. Not sure where to ask questions for the Q&A section, but here's my burning question: Can you please do a video showing us how you launch, fly and land your drone on the water? We've got a 40' flybridge and want a drone, but am thinking the bow is the safest and best place, but have concerns about actually landing it back on the boat when anchored (not moving). An episode showing us how you're doing all of your filming would be interesting too! Oh and more donuts and treats for Shawn. You guys find the best desserts!! Love the show! Thanks, Dan Anglin
The "missing" sea lions are all over here in Port Madison, between the Indianola/Miller Bay sand spit and Bainbridge Island. Bark all night, bark all day. In the mornings on nice days they congregate in a big group (25-30) out in the middle of the bay and...umm...do what sea lions do in the spring.
With the exception of bottom growth, the maintenance of a boat is really no different from a car or a house. Some keep them looking pristine and up to date with boring weekly chores. Others let houses look like crap with dead crab grass front yards and cars running on empty oil warnings for miles. Look around a marina, you have the same thing. Some people have pride of ownership regardless of where they live or kind of boat and others don’t. Thumbs up to pride of ownership in whatever you do or where you do it.
Absolutely love the vids. Shawn teaches me much about boats and I am smarter for it. Your team work approach towards boat chores seems to mostly make room on the to do list for more inevitable chores. Love Elizabeth's smiling attitude concerning a choir she's not looking forward too. Wax on....wax off. Thanx kids.
I understand the effort in making these videos, having dabbled myself, so thank you they are entertaining and informative. I have a Carver 450 and feel like the maintenance and related cost is not more than any hobby. But it is intermittent and the days and nights of freedom (pun intended) on the water are the major part and an irreplaceable part of my life. My brother owns 5 acres and spends every Saturday in the summer on his lawn tractor mowing.
1) I think you can make a fair comparison between boat maintenance and house maintenance. Having lived in the same house for 26 years I can think of a lot of projects that take time and money. Landscaping and gardening is non stop. Replace the roof; years later have moss cleaned off roof. Water leaks causing dry rot under showers and toilets. Septic system pump outs and repairs. Rodents getting in to attic spaces. Ant infestations. Painting the exterior every 10 to 12 years. Appliance repairs. Remodeling projects. Flooding from broken washing machine. So yes there's always something! Having cruised years ago with my father-in-law all over South Sound to Nanaimo and beyond I would gladly take the boat! Looking forward to your report out of Alert Bay once covid restrictions are lifted. 2)Mr. Peterson's comment about engine smells really could be a warning about carbon monoxide. I would recommend a CO measuring device, not just an alarm, to understand if there is a potential problem. Best wishes for the upcoming summer boating season.

Thanks for the grey water bit, that was me asking, very interesting! Love the suction cup idea, wish I had thought of that back when I was diving boats regularly. for the chap with the "engine smell", he might have some blowback and that would pressurize the oil spaces causing some oil in aerosol form to escape. Maybe look around the valve covers for leaks and check the breathers on crankcases and transmission for oil staining/residue. Another great video, I really do admire your editing skills!
We love that he dives and does your own work - but we've always wondered, are you worried about getting electrocuted if there is electricity flowing near by? When we were on M dock, our zincs would disappear 2 months because we had a "hot" neighbor and their power cord was always in the water. Thanks for sharing!!
I love your Sunday video and look forward to it every week! I may sound protective, but I worry about you running in wooded areas alone. Aren’t you afraid? Or do you have a metal baton in your pocket? Just want you to be safe. Could you get a friend to run with you? Take care and hugs to Sully!

I can see it now, the next time you wax the boat and being more prepared with wine and munchies. I am betting not a lot will get done lol. Wishing you a a super great week from down here on Lake Whitney, Texas
I'll bet there was a lot of extra distance involved in that exercise run of yours given all the going back to pick up the camera that you had to do; especially the stairs. Great video again!

When working on cleaning or removing a blackwwater tank, or even grey water, the biggest, cheapest wet/dry vac is your best friend. With blackwater it's pretty much a throw away once your done. Or sell it cheap to a friend.
Oh yea! Ray's boat house...Our favorite too. As far as work on a house, my wife and I have lived in 4 different homes. From 2000SF to 4000SF+ and from small lots to 2 acres. And yes, big house on two acres in Maui was way to much work. I think I would like to try boat living. But I enjoy watching you two enjoy that life for sure.
10:02 The old zinc was still in pretty good shape, but I guess they are cheap enough to swap out. The rule of thumb is about 50% left, looks like maybe 10-20% gone there, but for only $20 better change it on a nice day. 👍👍⚓
Hi Guys, Elisabeth. I nearly had a heart attack just looking at you climbing those steps..... several times... Help. Question. on your Portside you have a Pole stowed to the side of the deckhouse... whats that? enjoy the show. D
I'm local and know that hill. She is insane! When I come downhill towards the marina, I ride the brakes the whole way. But I do NOT ride back up that hill to get home.
The pole is for deploying our flopper stopper which provides more stabilization at anchor. We’ve yet to deploy/test it so that’ll have to be something for our next windy day at anchor!
Went to high school up the road at Ballard. Shilshole is a nice marina and Lord knows I have spent a lot of time in them. If you dont relish projects never own a boat otherwise you will go insane. Nice vids and even better narration-- enjoyable. Now on to marina potluck?
All kidding aside, Shaun is an engineer/perfectionist, both essential to keeping aircraft, road vehicles or vessels from turning into pig pen disasters. Especially important as safety & survival rely on dedicated upkeep. Kudos for doing the stairs. A gym is far from essential.
Very impressive the way Shaun and Elizabeth look after their boat. I watch a bunch of different boaters (mainly sailors). If they were all as focused on the upkeep and quality, they would save themselves all kinds of breakdowns and mishaps.
How often do you wax your boat? Does the gray water pump overboard even in the marina? Nice episode and your subscriber count is growing nicely! You deserve it, your videos are well shot and edited.
The entire boat gets waxed 2x/year done in chunks as time and weather permit, and yes the grey water pumps overboard in the marina which is normal. Most boats don’t have a tank, it just flows overboard.
Have you thought about adding ultrasonic transducers to your hull. I had SoniHull added after a friend did on a Fleming 65 and went three years before having to paint again. It’s a cool concept though you will still need to change your zincs (are you actually using aluminum now).
Hi guys it's Andy with the parrot. Shaun do you think your desire for a custom fitted case for your sinks comes from being a machinist? I mean who doesn't love all the cool cases that Starrett tools come in. Sometimes I like the case more than the tool. I specially like the old wood cases with dovetail corner joints. Well take care. And do you use mastercam?
And one of Tom Clancy’s novels his hero bought a boat and The old owner mentioned that he might want to change out the zincs. So he went out and changed out all the sinks. Anyone else?
Great video guys. Question about the bow and stern thrusters- do they have to be purged after Shawm dives the boat? I am assuming that the air bubbles get caught in the tunnels leading them to have to be purged from the trapped air. Nice to see Shawn using an actual dive tank and not a hookah setup, like a lot of people I have seen. Have a good week!
Shawn's OCD gives me anxiety. He'd of made a great Field Day inspector in the Marine Corps. Too many of my hours in the Corps were spent waxing and buffing floors, cleaning and shining faucets and showers, and racks, and folding clothes, and shining brass buckles, and polishing boots and dress shoes and pressing clothes; Shawn should have enlisted, he would have loved that!
NICE ROCKY SEQUENCE ELIZABETH, AND NEED THE LAW AND ORDER MUSIC BETWEEN SEGMENTS AND MAYBE THE 20,000 DOLLAR PYRAMID GONG WHENEVER A RIGHT ANSWER COMES ABOUT. IT WOULD ADD SUSPENSE AND LEVITY TO THE SHOW, NOT THAT THERE'S A LACK OF ANY NOW. GOOD WORK GUYS AND ANOTHER ENJOYABLE VIDEO.
Sure, make fun of OCD all you want....but I bet we would all love to have our own perfectly folded shirts and meticulously waxed gelcoats. So worth it.
Good job with the Finesse-It and Fleetwax. It's the best. If you're waxing every 6 months, couldn't you skip the cleaner/wax first step to save yourself some effort?
If you keep the waxing current (which you obviously do), about how many man/woman hours go into cleaning and waxing the entire boat, and how often do you have to do it if you cruise regularly? Is it significantly less often if you are in the marina more often?
I have done a lot of diving in my day, but as I got older I refused to dive on boats even my own in a marina. Too many chances for stray current to kill you. I always tried to dive on the boat when at an anchorage or on a mooring. Like pilots, there are old divers and bold divers, but no Old Bold Divers.
Shawn is so very good at explaining things, and Elizabeth you’re awesome for helping out with such a great attitude!

Working on the gray water tank...better than black water tank.
It’s been said, “Everything on your boat is broken, you just don’t know it yet.”
Posted this vid on my birthday! Thanks.
I understand the term to be "break out another thousand" , as in somethings breaks, as in always.
Great video - thanks. Were you on anchor for the Q&A? It looked like there were WA State ferries in the background...
Yes we were!
Went to high school up the road at Ballard.
Shilshole is a nice marina and Lord knows I have spent a lot of time in them. If you dont relish projects never own a boat otherwise you will go insane.
Nice vids and even better narration-- enjoyable. Now on to marina potluck?
Where did you have all your custom "M/V Freedom" swag commissioned (shirts, hats, masks, and rugs, etc)? I love it!
3M Finess it .. awesome product
It actually stands for "Break Out Another Thousand."
FFS
All kidding aside, Shaun is an engineer/perfectionist, both essential to keeping aircraft, road vehicles or vessels from turning into pig pen disasters. Especially important as safety & survival rely on dedicated upkeep. Kudos for doing the stairs. A gym is far from essential.
Very impressive the way Shaun and Elizabeth look after their boat. I watch a bunch of different boaters (mainly sailors). If they were all as focused on the upkeep and quality, they would save themselves all kinds of breakdowns and mishaps.
love it
How often do you wax your boat? Does the gray water pump overboard even in the marina? Nice episode and your subscriber count is growing nicely! You deserve it, your videos are well shot and edited.
The entire boat gets waxed 2x/year done in chunks as time and weather permit, and yes the grey water pumps overboard in the marina which is normal. Most boats don’t have a tank, it just flows overboard.
@@mvfreedom So Freedom holds it until the tank is full, then pumps the tank empty? Interesting design.
Have you thought about adding ultrasonic transducers to your hull. I had SoniHull added after a friend did on a Fleming 65 and went three years before having to paint again. It’s a cool concept though you will still need to change your zincs (are you actually using aluminum now).
Damn that hull is clean
Hi guys it's Andy with the parrot. Shaun do you think your desire for a custom fitted case for your sinks comes from being a machinist? I mean who doesn't love all the cool cases that Starrett tools come in. Sometimes I like the case more than the tool. I specially like the old wood cases with dovetail corner joints. Well take care.
And do you use mastercam?
Do they have a 'marine Hooters' for boat cleaning, seems quite labourious
At our marina everybody went to Wind turbines for charging batteries mini windmills they are everywhere I live in Alaska not Much sun for six months
And one of Tom Clancy’s novels his hero bought a boat and The old owner mentioned that he might want to change out the zincs. So he went out and changed out all the sinks. Anyone else?
Nice editing. As ever ;-)
Not need to purge air. The tunnels are smooth and straight. A little rocking or tide action will allow any air to escape.
Collinite wax is my favorite wax! Long lasting. Have you tried or spoken with anyone that has used the ceramic products to protect the finish?
You forgot to tighten the Flux Capacitor and you never torqed the turbo charged timimng chain! Wow you guys are something else.
Hello, Do you take any measures to prevent rodents from getting on your boat while you are docked?
Haha how many times did you need to stop to film yourself? Joys of UA-cam
Well done on your morning.
WaxON, WaxOFF, your Karate should be ship shape now. (remember Karate Kid?)
That line was on replay in our heads the entire time 😉
Sure, make fun of OCD all you want....but I bet we would all love to have our own perfectly folded shirts and meticulously waxed gelcoats. So worth it.
Nice waxing job👍🏼
Hey Shawn, instead of wax, did you tried Turtle Wax Ceramic coating? Last longer. Great video guy's... 👍
That’s a cool hat and shades😎
Good job with the Finesse-It and Fleetwax. It's the best. If you're waxing every 6 months, couldn't you skip the cleaner/wax first step to save yourself some effort?
If you keep the waxing current (which you obviously do), about how many man/woman hours go into cleaning and waxing the entire boat, and how often do you have to do it if you cruise regularly? Is it significantly less often if you are in the marina more often?
The whole boat gets waxed about 2x/year done in small chunks as time and weather permits. Cleaning is weekly which makes things easier.
Shiny! I imagine bird poop must be a daily problem? Just soap and water spot clean as needed?
I have done a lot of diving in my day, but as I got older I refused to dive on boats even my own in a marina. Too many chances for stray current to kill you. I always tried to dive on the boat when at an anchorage or on a mooring. Like pilots, there are old divers and bold divers, but no Old Bold Divers.
When Elizabeth gets Captain certified will it become questions with the Captains?
Funny we were recently talking about that!
