That'll be the great thing about it. A time travel movie in 'now' modern times, about an event that didn't happen (at least to us it didn't happen). Of course involving the navy again. and the outcome of that event is todays moden life as we see it
There is a novel series, "Axis of Time". An entire international armada from the year 2021, fighting the global war on terror, inexplicably get sent to 1942 and screw up the battle of Midway.
I SOOOOOO wanted the F14s to go up against the Japanese; I guess that would have been too expensive a film to make, still it did introduce me to the amazing F14 Tomcat for the very first time, what an amazing aircraft
In this movie, there was a near crash of the F-14 during the Zero fighter scene. You see the F-14 dive toward the water with full afterburner. The F-14 nearly stalled and had to nose down to regain control ..
The maneuver was intentional (i.e. planned). The camera zoomed in on that point to make it look like he was getting too close to the water. Higher ups watching a screening asked the pilot how low they went to which the pilot responded, "500 feet, sir", ... which was okay with the higher ups.

Kind of like that original Star Trek episode City on the Edge of Forever. In that story, one person's alternate fate changed the course of the U.S. entering the war and the Nazis prevail as a result.
I would NOT change anything about the attack on Pearl Harbor because of the saying that if you change ONE thing in the past, then you WILL change the entire future too.

That plot line opens up some 'cans-of-worms', but it is interesting to think about.
I saw this film in the theater when it came out. I wish it would come on TV more often. I rarely see it. I think a remake of it would be great. With today's technology, they could make it look awesome. Even better, would be a twist ending. Have the Aircraft Carrier stop the Pear Harbour Attack. Then return to present day and show the changes that took place. That would be too cool!
Ever hear of DVD's ? There are actually stores, that resell used, but good ones, and SOME Libraries, get collections , from Estates' donations ! (It's possible.)
The problem is that might not have the results you think it would. Lets say the Nimitz actually stopped the attack, even sank the Japanese Attack Force, all six carriers, then simply left and not stayed in 1941. This does not guarantee a shorter war. If anything it might end up causing the contrary to happen. Americans before Pearl Harbor and the fighting in the Philippines saw the Japanese as "racial inferiors" with buck teeth, coke-bottle glasses and flying in tin planes. A quick victory might wrongly reinforce that view....at least until the 1941 US military (which would have been upgraded after the attack in this new timeline) faced the Japanese in Asia and the South Pacific and ran right into the reality that the Japs didn't just take over most of the area because the Brits, French, and Dutch were all asleep. The Japanese were masters of warfare in their corner of the world with a professional military and navy. If American went into the war with that mentality and ran face-first into the slaughter that would happen, it results might have been a bit more than demoralizing. Might even have turned the public against the war if the casualties were very high. Remember that Pearl Harbor was a rallying cry, a reason for vengeance. A war where we shoot first and then get bloodied? No, not something that would work with a generation raised on cowboy movies where the good guys don't shoot first. History would change but not in a positive way. Certainly the US might eventually win against Japan, or at the least fight a stalemate in the Pacific till Hitler is defeated, then be forced to sign some half-assed peace with Tokyo afterward to keep Russia and Mao's Chinese Communists from turning and taking over Southeast Asia like they tried to do in our timeline. That in turn could end up leading to the Domino Effect happening and the Communists capturing all of Korea, Vietnam and the rest of Indo-China. The only way for this to remain a positive outcome would be for the USS Nimitz to remain in the past and use the modern weapons to finish the job (aka take out Tokyo and Berlin with nukes). Granted they have enough of an arsenal on board with supply the modern weapons for a time, but not fight a long war until the supplies run out. The ammo for the jets can be replaced in the 1940s, but the jet fuel would be limited since they hadn't worked out the formula for it just yet. It can be replicated if someone aboard knows the formula and right mixtures, but that would take time to reproduce. Ditto with the rockets. Still with the nuclear weapons aboard, they could bluff the Japanese and Nazis into thinking they had the ability to finish the job. It would also give the US a technological head-start with the rest of the world once they reverse engineer the technology from the future.
Enlisted always the last to know anything. Good movie one I like rewatching. Would love to see a follow up movie on the two that got left behind and what they all changed.
I like this movie. I watch it every time I see it’s on TV. The movie never explained what caused the storm that caused the time travel. I always figured it was a freak event like the Bermuda Triangle.
Excellent movie, and highly underrated. Im thinking the main plot of this movie is that even if time travel were somehow possible, whether by a man made time machine, or in this case an act of Nature/ God via a powerful and in explainable exectromagnetic storm of unknown causes, it would be pretty much impossible to change the past without altering the future. By interfering with the attack on Pearl Harbor, they may have created a different timeline where the USS Nimitz was never built, and perhaps most of the crew members having a different path in life, in other words a Paradox. If in that altered future timeline, if the ship was never built and her crew took different pathways in their lives, then how could the Nimitz and her crew be transported back in time via anomalous electrical storm seemingly out of nowhere , and interfere with and change a major historical event? That is the Paradox.
Sequel. Have Martin Sheen's character working for a secret government agency after their encounter, trying to reproduce the conditions of the storm in a lab and succeeding.
One of my favorites. This movie was the origin of the idea for Top Gun. The Navy was on board with the whole production. I noticed a few years later the movie Philadelphia Experiment had a similar theme. If you combine the two movies they actually overlap. One scene from that movie shows a portal through time that the sailor is traveling and it's moving. He shuts down the source but the ship materialized some place else. I figured that the Nimitz encountered the same portal. Same time frame. All in all the miniseries The Triangle covers the same territory years later.
One of my favorite lines in any movie is, "So, all we have to sail through some storm at sea and BINGO! We're suddenly much more clever than Einstein. "
While the story and characters were not the best, this was a wonderful movie for Grumman, USN and aerospace enthusiasts because of the scenes with the combat aircraft of the day. My father worked for Grumman Aerospace for 35 years and was a principal member of the LEM design team, focusing on the landing gear and the creation of the Lunar Surface Sensing Probe (affectionately called the "lunar curb feeler" at our home). The musical score by John Scott is outstanding, and continues to be one of the most under-rated aspects of the film. Fun film fact: During the sequence in which a F-14 engages one of the Japanese Zero fighters, the F-14 pilot had to throttle down to match speed and almost stalled his aircraft- and the seemingly dramatic pull-up recovery about 100 feet above the surface was quite real and captured on film. This movie was really great for the time it was released. We need the continuation of Final Cowntdown with a modern powerful naval fleet returning back to Pear Harlbor and engaging into war. Would they be able to change history? What will happen in the future by doing so? Will they create a space time paradox ? Hopefully there will a Final Countdown II movie !

I didn't know this movie was existed but I read a fanfiction about this but great recap. I hope one day there's a sequel or a reboot but I will love to see a movie similar to that instead of a modern warship, how about an entire United States along with their modern warfare, technology and civilians got time travel(or Isekai in Japanese) to WW2? It's like a fanfiction where Modern US forces team up with WW2 British, Soviet and their allies against the Axis Powers while carefully altering some events whereas modern civilians were dealing with 1940s civilians as they show them about movies, selfies, social media and other modern stuff in a confuse but hilarious ways.
I always enjoyed a 1960s TV show called 'The Time Tunnel' where the stars bounced around in different periods of time, always appearing near some major historical event. This movie follows the same outline with a major budget available.
I'm governed by the potential Temporal paradox. By altering the past could have unintentional consequences to the time. So quoting Doctor Emmett Brown, BTTF.
Going to the past to prevent a war would likely set us back decades technologically. Wars are major contributors to new tech as they forces us to innovate. Almost all major tech leaps we've had are link to a war.
39 years between 1941 and 1980 when the film was made. Now it’s 44 years between 1980 and 2024. Kind of funny, especially when they regarded it a big deal in the movie.
The film is good but I got dissapointed because I was expecting an epic battle between the f14s, more advanced but outnumbered, against the Japanese forces, less advanced but in greater numbers.
I really enjoy this movie. Sadly it was underated and the title remembered as the title of a song by Europe in the 80's. Always wondered it they actually got the fight the Japanese fleet , Undoubtably they would have won but also changed. It would likely be that a number of the crew would disappear due to the change in history. In a way it did. Commander Owens would have used his knowledge to help in WW2. With the knowledge of future he would have lots of oppurtunities to get wealthy. They would have watched over lasky life and career until he got back. Laurel was probably relieved that Charlie would still be alive after 40 years.
they should remake this movie, i was about 11 years old when i first see it, then a few years later the philadelphia experiment was released with a similar story
An interference would have altered the timeline and you have no idea what that could have done. Going back to 1980 would be way different than when you left it. You may not have even been born.
Good premise. If the Nimitz had attacked the Japanese fleet the attack on PH wouldn't have happened, the US wouldn't have joined WWII and the Axis powers may have won the war. All in allowing the attack on PH was the winning move.
The change in who dies and who survives alone would echo down through time if they stopped the Japanese attack. People would appear, others disappear on the Nimitz. Imagine if a sailor who would have died at Pearl Harbor goes on to marry a woman who would have otherwise married someone else and was an ancestor of a Nimitz crewmember. That person would erase from existance.
Love this movie old school and the idea of what if it could happen? And that old classic time butterfly effect if you change 1 thing that it can change everything loved this movie that much i managed to get a original movie poster of this movie wish they did another
According to many people, including most Hawai’ians, do not consider Hawai’i to be in the United States. Before any of you query that, read up on Hawai’is history, especially the events in 1893.
i always wanted them to do a remake of this movie where they actually attacked the Japanese fleet and wiped it out. then have a follow-on TV series that explores the outcome of that action. would Japan have instantly sued for peace since their main fleet was destroyed and America had a new weapon (not knowing the tech to keep the planes and ship going would not be possible for decades to come) that was so devastating? what would have happened in Europe and China if the US stayed out of the war? or at what point would the US enter the war and how that may change history. so many ways you could go with this story line.
You mean like "The Man in the High Castle" (Nazis win WWII) show or "For All Mankind" (Russia wins the Space Race) show? That could be very interesting. Most of the bullets and bombs would use the same or similar technology, so I wouldn't think those would be hard to make (though if modern day requires higher tolerances, that might be an issue). The performance of the gunpowder might be problematic (I honestly don't know). I would think getting the jet fuel right would be the bigger issue. I don't know if the precise performance and makeup of the fuel is recorded anywhere on the ship (being on the Internet doesn't help in this case 🙂). I am interested in what people think the Japanese Empire would do. OT1H, their main fleet would be decimated if not completely destroyed. OTOH, the Japanese military are not know for surrendering (just the opposite in fact). By this time, their declaration of war would have been made (they made it after the attack started, but still in the same day), so there's no backing out of that. They're kind of committed to a course they know they can't win. Of course, since the attack was NOT successful ("America bravely fought off the aggressors!", or some such), the American people might not be as up-in-arms to fight as they were (recall we were very isolationist before the attack). America might NOT get into the war. And *that* would have all kinds of consequences!
The problem with revealing advanced technology is you risk the strong possibility that showcasing such technology could give the enemy ideas of what is possible and allow them to reverse-engineer such advancements
i haven't seen the shows you referenced, but all the things you talk about are the things i also wonder about. if the US fleet hadn't been attacked the way it was, how eager would the people have been to line up at the recruiting stations or to go through all the rationing for the next 4 years? or more. just so many possible ways you could look at this whole era.@@christalbot210
@@firerescueratchet559 yes and no. the US did capture a wrecked Zero fighter, rebuilt it and then they found the strengths and weakness of it and used that in future aircraft production to make better fighters to latter dominate the Zeros. but with tech from 1980 (or from present day) you would have to know how so many of the little things are made before you could copy them. if you took an I-Phone back in time with all the plans for the phone and the towers, you still could not reproduce one with the tech of the 40s due to the 1000 little things that would be impossible to produce at that time. you would have to spend years creating all the other things before you could even attempt to make a cell phone. i know my example is like comparing a grape to a watermelon, but after all we are just having a conversation about things we daydream about while we stare at our work wishing we didn't have to work... have a good day.

Love this movie thanks
0:27 damn that’s a nice badass Aircraft Carrier
you can find video about 8.5 billion dollars aircraft carrier the U.S.S. Nimitz by US Military News the carrier was going to retired in 2026 and 2029 get replaced by gerald r ford
Yes, I remember the movie! Cool !
Good Movie Glad I've Got It on DVD.
It's like a fanfiction where Modern US forces team up with WW2 British, Soviet and their allies against the Axis Powers while carefully altering some events whereas modern civilians were dealing with 1940s civilians as they show them about movies, selfies, social media and other modern stuff in a confuse but hilarious ways.
mostly likely that'll be different.
Damn Martin Sheen is so young. 😂🤣
I have seen this movie before but I haven't seen it in a long time
They actually released it on Blu-ray. I know, because I have it.
Same 😢
Was a good movie
I always enjoyed a 1960s TV show called 'The Time Tunnel' where the stars bounced around in different periods of time, always appearing near some major historical event. This movie follows the same outline with a major budget available.
That movie is the reason I joined the Navy! Wow
As a decorated captain of IJN in world of warship. I agree w/ this movie.
Really? I am a decorated Kriegsmarine Captain in War thunder
I am a decorated human
I'm governed by the potential Temporal paradox. By altering the past could have unintentional consequences to the time. So quoting Doctor Emmett Brown, BTTF.
But then Captain Yelland thought, "What the hell..."
This was a great movie.
Going to the past to prevent a war would likely set us back decades technologically. Wars are major contributors to new tech as they forces us to innovate. Almost all major tech leaps we've had are link to a war.
I remember this movie. Very cool !
Could only imagine reuniting with your dog after 40 years.
Love this movie and watch it often
Stuck on a desert island with Katharine Ross. I'd go back in time for that. ;O)
Or with Marilyn Munroe
The time from WWII to this movie is LESS than the movie to the Present Day. Meaning Todays Navy would make the 80's Navy look OLD.
Great movie
they should remake this movie, i was about 11 years old when i first see it, then a few years later the philadelphia experiment was released with a similar story
there was similar to this but Japanese Destroyer jds mirai (Zipang 2004)
No remake. Sequel!
watch this way back and it never gets old....we need isekai movies i think these guys started the whole isekai genre
Isekai was started by Mark Twain
POV: Warthunder custom battles
I think they should remake it, too good a premise to pass up
5:40 That Yacht must be using Nitroglycerin as fuel.
I rather not change anything if u don't want to have BUTTERFLY EFFECT HAPPENING TO U
Loved the movie a true classic
9 👍's up S Lab thank you for sharing 😅
Loved this film as a kid
I like this movie.
An interference would have altered the timeline and you have no idea what that could have done. Going back to 1980 would be way different than when you left it. You may not have even been born.
Love this film.
Ahh what wanderful nam that is 0:54
Prime Directive still applies.
to quote a certain captain:
"To hell with the Temporal Prime Directive" 😄
Alii laddy but she could have been the enterprise cv 68.
Good premise. If the Nimitz had attacked the Japanese fleet the attack on PH wouldn't have happened, the US wouldn't have joined WWII and the Axis powers may have won the war. All in allowing the attack on PH was the winning move.
yeah , AKA the "thousand year Reich" universe
If I be traveling back to that time I would be a trillionaire today…
Nice.
LOVE THE MOVIE
A remake of this movie would be I teresting to watch.
Love this movie old school and the idea of what if it could happen? And that old classic time butterfly effect if you change 1 thing that it can change everything loved this movie that much i managed to get a original movie poster of this movie wish they did another
Im surprised no one screamed "Aliens!!!!!!!!!!!"
The super carrier did NOT end up in the midst of WWII. Japan has not yet attacked Pearl Harbor.
It did end up in WWII, because Europe is at war with Germany isn’t it? Please correct me if I’m wrong.
It ended up 2 years into WWII. Start of the war was 1st of September 1939. Pearl harbor was 7th december 1941
Be good to remake this now and change the outcome.
Good watch.
nice
The bad thing about changing the past bad things, is it would change a lot of good things, too.
Skirting the public and capitalizing on business venture one could amass sizeable fortune on the way into the 21st century .. .
According to many people, including most Hawai’ians, do not consider Hawai’i to be in the United States. Before any of you query that, read up on Hawai’is history, especially the events in 1893.
Too bad. Hawaii is a US STATE. Only the delusional would contest that fact.
3:51 same photos.
the present is built on the past. Attempting to change past events is not possible
If it is, then any future one might return to would be somewhat different to the timeline we originated in.
to travel back in time you need to collect, store enough energy to re-set the entire UNIVERSE
your not going to do that with a kilo of plutonium
i always wanted them to do a remake of this movie where they actually attacked the Japanese fleet and wiped it out. then have a follow-on TV series that explores the outcome of that action. would Japan have instantly sued for peace since their main fleet was destroyed and America had a new weapon (not knowing the tech to keep the planes and ship going would not be possible for decades to come) that was so devastating? what would have happened in Europe and China if the US stayed out of the war? or at what point would the US enter the war and how that may change history. so many ways you could go with this story line.
@@joedoe6444 you can describe what a micro chip can do, but do you know what is the frequency, beam width, power output of the electron beam that cuts it
" what we have here is failure to communicate "😊
Plot twist the Japanese soldier is thrusted into the future where he finds himself in Vietnam as a Colonel who holds US service members hostage. He would have had a good life but he crossed paths with Chuck Norris.....
imagine the look on the zero,s pilots faces seeing the modern fighter jets !
Love this movie, needs to be remade
I would like to meet my real parents whom they both they are. And meeting my two foster parents and correcting my mistakes. Or just leave it like before. Its a choice i should think of. I rather meet my two foster parents and give all due respect and love for both of them. And others will follow. 😊
For a 44 year old film it's pretty good.
Modem?
Modern as of 1980.... But that was over 40 years ago....
The only fixed wing still in service from back then were the Hawkeyes and Greyhounds!!!!!
Be better if you had titled it "Nuclear carrier travels 40 years" or something similar
