From the little that I know of the battle of France, another problem was that the French scattered their armor among infantry units as support, while the Germans massed their armor.
the French had a good idea; but they definitely spread too thin while Germany took the "iron fist" to them in one go.
That was most of the reason they lost, their tactics hadn't evolved past 1930-ish while the Nazis had to rebuild and rethink everything, Also helped that France was right next to Nazi Germany thus they didn't have to care as much about supply so they went full ham on the French.
they had armored divisions aswell but everything was deployed in the north. The town were the german pierced throught france changed 40 times in one day , combat was fierce but what lost us the battle and later on the war was the leadership. One prime example of it was the nearby armored division commander that refused to commit unless he gets a written order (he received a radio order but he was old school and refused to act on it). And many other commanders were acting the same way.
If you had this to the general lack of communication and the lucky break of Rommel, well you get a big debacle.
@@Syladen does anyone know if the belief that the french tanks were not mobile enough to redeploy effectively to counter the speed of the German armoris accurate or not?
i.e. when a panzer unit encountered french armored resistance, they just withdrew and circumvented them, and the french tankscouldn’t keep up.
@@okonkwojones This is true but not because of their tank designs, the French actually had a lot of radios and even before the war pioneered radio interception methods and stations, but because of this they came to fear that their own radio transmissions would be intercepted as well so they tried to rely on using carrier pidgeons and messengers. This method of communication was not fast enough to keep up with the panzer armies so yes in a way they were not mobile enough to keep up with Germans.
Phly : « If the French had better tanks in terms of gun and armour…”
**sad Char B1 noises**
I approve
b1 is a joke now in wt. It sees panzer III, panzer iv G, sherman 105 and a lot more things it cant pen. z
Just Yesterday I neutralized a B1 with the german 15cm artillery on tracks at 1.0
Yep but unfortunatly those where not produced a lot. Still there were some funny story like during the battle of Stone, where 1 b1 captured the town by himself and the next day another b1 recapture the town by himself again.
@@combatantezoteric2965 yeah, and in sim battles, when early ww2 tanks have a go, Germany gets pumans, and french get the tanks with those little pew pew guns. B1 is not there. Why? Probably because Germans would cry that nobody can pen french tanks and GeRmAnY sUfFeRs

@@ommsterlitz1805 All u had to say was yes
French tanks where better in a 1v1 but because of the radio used by Germans they made sure that those situations didn't happen
Yup it right
I raise you the Nicolas Moran reviews of pre-war French tanks at Samur. They are deathtraps with old Renault FT guns.
They were not necessarily better but they were on par with German tanks if not for the fact French tanks did have a huge drawback in not having radio's and were thus unable to communicate in between tanks other than the old fashioned way of signaling which was not suitable for the Blitzkrieg war that was fought. The end result was a quick defeat of France. Assuming you were referring to the world war II era which this tank was not from btw.
@@tsk9277 they had improved the pre-war guns, from the shitty short 47 to the bit longer 37 and 47, with better pen and higher velocity, could take out any pz 1, 2, 3 or 4 without any problem
Problem was the number French tanks were supose to be used in large group but they dont made enough tanks and many général like Degaule or Petain warned that we dont had enough tanks in1927 but no, one listened at them.
I love this tank! And a great fête nationale to all my french buddys!
Bonne fête !
I really like the addition of the historical facts!
What is often left out of the Battle of France is the huge losses the Luftwaffe suffered from the french and british airforces, and probably saved Britain if not the war, at least a lot of time.
Dunkirk too
Interesting, I always heard that they suffered relatively minimal losses. In my opinion, what saved Britain the war was the decision to stop bombing airfields, because this gave the RAF the chance to replenish its fighter forces and deny the Luftwaffe air superiority. Thank goodness for that
@@troutwarrior6735 Actually, if i remember right what i read about the whole Battle of France, germany lost more than 1000 tanks, 50% of their airforce so they were weakened before starting the battle of britain, and had around 160 000 soldier killed or wounded. But the most important thing is that because of the heroic defense of french / belgian soldiers at dunkirk, most of the british BEF could escape to carry on the war. In counterparts, they left in France most of their equipements (a lot of tanks and stuff).
@@troutwarrior6735 battle of france is usually badly taught to people. Germany could have been crushed, the panzer division were going too fast for infantry men to follow, despite their great first attack, france could have beat them several timeswith better officier and generals
@@zzaronn Invasion of France was deffinetely a huge risk for Germany! Could have gone south very fast, the French most definitely outnumbered them and, in many areas, were superior. Blitzkrieg eventually won the day though, and it really scared the heck out of the remaining allies.
Just got back into War Thunder after a 5 year hiatus. Love that you're still here doing videos, can't wait to catch up on them all. Been having fun playing early French tanks and i'm looking forward to getting further in the tree!
I believe French tank "commander" units had radios to receive orders, but the tanks under said command were supposed to communicate with flags. Like... semaphore. Not to mention a french tank unit's members were generally very spread out, supporting individual infantry units. So you can imagine how that worked out.
Happy Bastille day everyone Merci Phly !

Correction: The French were not flanked from the north (their entire army moved north as part of their strategy), they were in fact flanked from the center through the Ardennes Forest as no one thought Germany would be crazy enough to swarm tanks through a forest with very few roads.
And honestly, I find it way more embarrassing to lose the center because your opponent did something so crazy, you never think they would actually do that crazy thing to win the war against you.
And I guess that is what best exemplifies the AMX-50 Tank. Powerful, but it breaks the convention of a tank by having a fragile front that even tanks below your tier can kill you easy.
Hey Phly, you probably won’t read this. But i still want to congratulate you on the baby :) and another thing, take a break as long as you want. Give your wife and the baby the time they need. I don’t care about how long the break will take, i still can watch other videos of you :)

I love playing this thing, a heavy medium tank with a great gun.
I love this tank I have been waiting for you to play this again. Its such a powerful tank but as you said you have to see the enemy first but its not always easy when you're drving a giant tank.
I’d say that it was part of a better operational structure and leadership system in place, of which having radios was a part of. This also includes pushing the decision level to the point of the spear, where commanders in the front could make decisive decisions without waiting for upper management to approve. Most French divisions were captured as they couldn’t stay flexible enough to respond to the German attacks.
And congrats! I got twin boys and it’s a handful but a privilege.

That escape off the mountain was actually so sick
Another difficulty in the battle of France is that French tanks were sprinkled along all the border while Germany concentrated their tanks on one point. The radio played a role and also most French tanks were under crewed so the tank commander had to watch, command, fire, reload and guide the driver at the same time
Loving the unloved Steve go back into your vids a see when was the last time you played the m47
The newer French tanks did have radios, but they still largely relied on flag and hand communication if I remember correctly
Ty phly for listening to me from the last “Big Dog” vid yk the one shot only challenge, two good vids here keep it up
You are correct, the French tankers at the time were still signaling or communicate to each other by signal flags, you can just imagine how effective that is compare to the Germans using radio

Komischer Name...
Falls du den Kampf verlierst sag bescheid, dann bin ich zuständig. XD
Communication was a HUGE part of Gauderin's Blitzkreig doctrine, and I agree it was the single most thing that allowed his forces to steamroll Frances superior tanks.
Second was the way the French deployed their tanks in piecemeal as opposed to Germany, corinated, pinpoint attacks of tanks, armored lnfantry and close air support and use of terrain and bypassing strong points.
this tank was supposed to have between 250 and 300 mm of armor on the turret but for some reasons they decided to do 60mm

@@ommsterlitz1805 I play Brits and the Americans mostly
Hello Phly, I'm french so what you said in the first part of the vidéo (about Radio) please me, this is true but it's not the only cause.
First, the belgians didn't want to let our troops in their country to protect them, so when Germany declared war, the french army rushed to defend belgium so fast that the army was unorganised and germans just pushed.
secondly French general staff was filled with old mans who thought "It will be a trench warfare again ..." and they where over-confident in the magino line. France attacked Germany during the invasion of Poland but didn't want to go too far wich is a great mistake because Germany was weak. an expression says: The French were lions led by donkeys
Thirdly: Germany had less tanks (and loss a great part of them before the battle of dunkirk) but more planes and as you know in War Thunder, CAS is powerful
Fourthly (idk if I can say that ^^): The Communism is the bigest problem ... (Calm down it's not politics it's history) French communism is the main rreason why we lost the war. You might know that after th treaty of versailles, Germany was not allowed to have a great arly, no tanks, no planes, no troops in the rhineland, no territory expansion ... So WHY were they able to do it and why did we not intervene?
The answer is that the communists in France where pacifists and after the Great War we can understand why, but the gouvernement wanted to invade Germany after the remilitarisation of Rhineland but communists threatened the french gouvernement to revolt if they declared war ...
So thanks Phly for not being on of the "French just surrender" guys, and thanks for people who read me even with my low skills in english.
There is so many other reasons about why we lost the battle of France but that's the main of them.
