      Channel surfing... I hate that I watch Sunday Night Football on Peacock and when the commercials hit I'm stuck on the app. I really enjoy flicking from FS1 to TNT and back to USA during commercials. Some good tips in here for folks though. Good job. :)

      @@Tony_NJ That's a fair point. We typically use the ad breaks for a bathroom stop, or just to get up. But, standalone services like Peacock do basically eliminate that ability to channel surf.

      Nothing, I already did by getitng rid of SpectrumTV starting out with UA-camTV. However, I will continue to search for providers to cut down my cost as much as possible. A TV antenna is not out of the question. If I team that up with AirTV 2 and SlingTV, I think it would be a winning combination.

      Maybe I'm a geezer but I find this extremely confusing. My uverse bill is $ 147 per month w/o premium channels. That's plus $ 60 for internet and $ 69 for wireless all ATT. I tied the streaming at my daughters in another large town and didn't like it. My town has 4 tv stations + pbs. I tried an antenna a few years ago and got zero channels. ATT is driving me crazy with continual price hikes and poor service. But I do not like Spectrum either.??????

    I did not switch to streaming from satellite TV until late 2020. My fear of buffering is what held me back. I have cable internet, but it is the cheapest tier, $27.99 per month, total. I was afraid it would not be enough for two TVs, plus VOIP phone service. I tested the speed and I get 23 mbps down, and it works great with TouTube TV. I was paying $80.20, to Dish each month for a tier that did not include ESPN, I now pay $68.24, for YTTV. I appreciate the savings, and I especially like being able to access TV on my computer. No more receiver rentals. Oh, and no more climbing up to clear snow off of the dish! One of my best decisions.

    • @FrugalRules

      We get the buffering concern, especially if you have a lower cost internet plan. That ability to get TV on your computer is a nice feature. Yep, we remember having to do that ourselves years ago. It was definitely a pain.

    I am so glad I left cable behind after 30 years! Spectrum was coming with price increases every year for the so-called Silver package that I had. I had to use Roku anyway in parts of my house that were not wired, and I was already using Firesticks, so the transition was easy for me to go to UA-cam TV. I also had to take Philo, because they had A&E and other channels I wanted. Still way cheaper. I am not missing anything, and paying for less channels I never watch. Never going back!

    Welcome back folks 🤗, I hope your holidays were totally enjoyable.
    I dropped cable in 2018 because of the cost and the contract requirements, plus the terrible customer service.
    Too many cable companies have exclusive rights for entire regions and have an absolute disdain for their customers. They shamelessly exhibit a monopolistic "WHAT'CHA GONNA DO" attitude.
    Having the options that streaming offers makes it so much easier to get what you want and control your budget too.
    2023 looks like it's going to be a VERY interesting year for streaming services.
    They seem to be realizing that the cable UI however, is something to emulate, and we see a transition toward making more of those features available on their platforms.
    UA-cam tv seems to be leading the way in the competition between PREMIUM services, so they're still my preferred service, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
    I thing the biggest takeaway that people should get from this video is, as you said "DROP THE CABLE MINDSET".

      Thanks! They were, aside from getting our tails handed to us by Bama. Hope yours was good as well. 🙂 You're 100% correct on both cable and streaming services. We think 2023 is going to be an interesting year in the space, which CAN be good...but it'll require mindfulness on the part of streamers to keep their costs in check. There's a ton of options out there, currently, but that doesn't mean all of those options will always stick around.

    My biggest want in this shift is to retain a central menu where I can click through all the stuff on at the moment or later on. I have a great antena (that I have to shift imput on to access). Sling is supposed to integrate over the air channels with streamed channels in one menu. Any other streaming or cable substitute services allow for this?

    • @FrugalRules
      @FrugalRules  Рік тому +2

      That's something a lot of streamers are looking for in increasing fashion. We just started testing the AirTV mini through Sling to see if that integrates. Amazon *used* to offer this if you used their Recast DVR, but with that being killed off and support waning it doesn't perform as it used to. No other streaming service allows for this, currently. There might be a device or two that does, but that would require them to play nice with other platforms.

    We tried UA-cam TV. The main things we watch on cable is our local pro team and our two in-state universities. What we found out was UA-cam did not replicate your local cable channels. Instead, they showed whatever the national broadcast was. No matter where you lived you got the national broadcasts.
    We also figured out that the initial monthly rate was a lowball to get you to subscribe. The rate always goes up soon.

    • @FrugalRules
      @FrugalRules  10 місяців тому

      That is all largely incorrect. In most locations it is the local channels you receive. Those that replicate the national broadcast, by and large, is minimal. Also, that's not what they so with the monthly rate. Their most recent price increase was in March of 2023. The one before that was in June of '20.

    • @ThisIsToolman
      @ThisIsToolman 10 місяців тому

      @@FrugalRules I’m not being clear. I am exactly correct in my particular situation. The nationally syndicated channel broadcasts the local sports teams of interest as local cable. This means that, although it’s the same channel everywhere on cable, their broadcast is different for each location. They also have a national broadcast, which is what UA-cam puts in their package. Everybody in the country sees the same thing on UA-cam.

That is unless you went with the Bally Sports service for $20.

    Does the quoted $217 include internet service too? It is never clear what people are comparing. I cannot believe just cable tv is over $200/month. I think Spectrum Silver is under $110 before taxes and local fees.

    • @FrugalRules
      @FrugalRules  Рік тому +2

      Yes, it does in the reports we're seeing. You'd be surprised as we talk to people regularly who are spending $250-$300 a month on cable alone. That's not a bad price, per se, with Spectrum, but they're not available everywhere. Like most cable companies they also tend to be monopolistic.

The savings was a no brainer, and I still have all the channels that we normally watched. Plus, I travel a lot for work and can watch YT TV in almost every hotel with my Firestick. Here's what we like about cable is the menu and the E-Z guide. Amazon fire stick, Apple TV,
    Not sure about Roku they don't have guides that come up on the screen like the cable. we like a guide on the screen like what cable offers. Otherwise, it's feels like you're blindfolded and you just pick any random program and waste your time.

    • @FrugalRules
      @FrugalRules  Рік тому +1

      We get that some cable companies offer that kind of convenience. But, we think there might be some confusion going on here. 🙂 Roku, Fire Stick, etc, are all devices, they're not streaming services. Many live TV streaming services have cable-like grid guides, where you can customize your guide to favorite channels, different categories of channels, etc etc, and often for a lot less than what you'd pay for cable.

    In general people hate to change cable companies, cellphone service, and car & home insurance. Once they sign up for a company they tend to stay with them, its just too much hassle to make a change, or so they think.
    Years ago I looked around, the internet makes it easy, and switched car insurance, saving several hundred dollars a year. I repeated that a few years later, saving more money. I now compare every year right before renewal time.
    After seeing how easy it was, and saving quite a bit of money in the process, I attempted to renegotiate my cable package without success, Comcast insisted that the expensive package I had was the only package available to me, even though I could see much cheaper packages available online. Comcast said those were only for new customers and I could not switch to them. I went with a different company for my internet, moved my home phone to a VOIP, and started streaming UA-cam TV. Rather than arguing on the telephone, I bagged all of the equipment up, walked into the local office, and cancelled the entire service. Later I put up an antenna, purchased a Tivo with lifetime service, dropped UA-cam TV, and now pay for only Philo. I have plenty of TV to watch.
    I have switched my cellphone from the postpaid plans to prepaid with coverage just as good, and more data available than I use, at a savings of more than $70/month. I never hesitate to change cellphone providers, porting the number is easy.
    Compared to what I was paying 4 years ago, I'm saving over $500/month. That's using the prices I was paying in 2019, ignoring any price increases since, which I'm sure have happened.

      You would call them (or preferably, go in-store) and tell them that you want to drop your TV service and keep internet. Unfortunately, most large companies will send you to their retention dept. doing everything they possibly can to get you to keep your TV service. Just flat out tell them you're not interested in keeping it anymore and just want internet. If you have any TV equipment (cable boxes, remotes, etc) make sure you take pictures of their serial numbers and other identifying numbers. Some companies like Comcast (similar to Spectrum) are notorious for claiming you never returned their equipment even if you did and will bill you for stuff you returned.

    I'm paying about $100/month on Dish, who I have been with for nearly 27 years. Most of all of our household viewing is now 'streaming' The viewing we now do via Dish are news channels and maybe three or four others. What I am now paying for is skipping commercials, especially the news channels where a four minute break is the norm. We watch almost nothing "live", delaying any show using a formula of 15mins/hr of viewing time. I know some paid streaming services allow me to 'skip' content BUT the damn dish remote has that fantastic :30 forward and :10 back button. It's those two buttons I pay some $100 a month for. Why cut the cable? The only streaming service that will save you money is actually Netflix and they do not go live, nor bring sports, All the others send out fake adds of low cost but as you get in, there are limits and extras you have to pay for. One thing to remember is that you have to also continue to pay for your internet in order to get these services online, so that is an extra 40, 50, or $60 added to the streaming cost.

      That's actually incorrect. There are numerous other services that aren't full-on live services that are significantly cheaper. That's also not to mention all of the free services one can use to get shows or movies. Additionally, Netflix has done some live events (admittedly few), and is actively looking to add some sporting events. Yes, internet is a cost and should be included in doing any math. However, internet is also much more of a utility today. If you do anything beyond streaming that requires it, you'll learn awfully quickly that it's a necessity. Not everyone that cuts the cord will save a ton, but many can.

    Why would you cut cable when streaming fees are rising and you can’t even get local news or watch you local sports team🤔

    • @FrugalRules
      @FrugalRules  Рік тому +1

      Cable fees are only going to rise as well, especially when you look at production costs increasing. And, that's assuming that premium streaming services are the only way to get your local news or sports teams. There are legit options out there to get both for a relatively affordable rate.

      @@FrugalRules But I can strike a deal with my cable provider to lower my bill, I cant with streaming

    • @FrugalRules
      @FrugalRules  Рік тому +1

      @@jacobsalinas2362 That's very true, but those are largely only for a limited time and will eventually go back up. For the time being, streaming has no contracts. Increasing production costs impact everyone, so it's highly likely cable/satellite will only follow suit. It's important to remember that many of the players in the entertainment space are somehow run by large conglomerates and they want one thing - more money.

      @@FrugalRules But pricing is going up, now theyre blocking password sharing and if I save money for at least a year its still a better deal than streaming.

      @@jacobsalinas2362 Pricing is going up everywhere though. And, it's important to remember that password sharing helps, in some part, to drive up costs. All of this also assumes that premium streaming services are the only choice on the market. As said prior, there are numerous options, in many though not all cases, to get what you want without spending a ton. For example, an OTA plus something like Bally Sports+ (admittedly a bad app) is one way to get local sports and news and you're paying under $25 a month. That also doesn't include on-demand services that are very affordable, or free services. There are more ways to get content than either cable or a premium live service. 🙂

    If you are paying 200-300 a month for cable or satellite I would say you have money to burn.
