@@WhateverDude38 Here's the thing: You government/federal banks prints money endlessly, which debases the value of your currency. This in turn makes your money worth less, which means everything costs more (including real estate), which in turn also drives up taxes on the basis of your property value, which in turn drives up the rent prices. Because your currency is being inflated in value, people look for options on where to store their money over having it devalued by sitting in a bank, so real-estate becomes a popular (if not only) option, and this in turn drives up demand and property prices while the value of your money continues to drop due to ongoing inflation. And because prices keep going up, the cost associated with paying taxes/maintenance etc on properties keeps going up, and therefore so does your rent. People need to start better understanding the core reason for why things are getting out of control, and the cause-and-effect relationship trickle down effects of our governments fiscal mismanagement, and not just point the finger at investors and say "Eat the rich".

Hi Joel! I’ve got a 2021 Promaster 1500 I’m looking to sell to someone wanting into the van life! It’s a basic build for now. Can be lived in fulltime! Let me know if you’re interested sir!
I lived in my van for two years but it was down in the Caribbean I washed in the sea and toileted in the jungle. I caught my food spearfishing with a mask flippers and snorkel. Cooked outside on a BBQ using coconut husks for fuel. I was in my early twenties and full of life and dreams. Very fond memories of van life don't know if I could do it somewhere cold. I would not want to do the same again as I'm too old I need my comforts.
I live in NYC born & raised and you're so right about the high rents and pests! I have been thinking long and hard about living the van life full-time. I'm about to be 51, it's just me & my dog and I want to travel with her around the US. I first have to get a driver's license 🤣. Best of luck to you all!!!

The bit about house dwellers projecting their insecurities onto van dwellers was profound. They're the ones with the problems. We're out here creating solutions. Well done that man!

I owned a BMW for 6 years and grew tired of it dumping money for repairs. I traded it for a promaster at a used car dealer. I converted the van into a catering truck. We cook meals at home and keep them warm with electric buffet warmers. I also sold hotdogs out of it. I run a 3500 watt generator and I also have an inverter. I’m happy with it because I see money coming in instead of just out.
I remember an adventurous coworker I hired in NYC living out of a small RV and he parked it somewhere in Brooklyn, 17 years ago!! I always thought he was courageous, mind you we were young and had no commitments. It takes a special person to live this life in NYC and am so glad these guys now have a community that is supportive. BTW, my friend saved lots of money by not being a slave to insane rent in the city and having worked in a lucrative industry post-9/11, invited me after the crash of 2008 to housesit his sailboat. He eventually moved to a warmer climate. Great video!
It's awesome to see the van community coming together in NYC and taking care of each other. Building a van while also living in it is no small thing. Hats off to those guys for getting it done. Thanks for the great video Patrick!
@@NewJerseyOutdoorAdventures Thanks! This video really makes us think we should start up a north east vanlife event sometime soon. I admire the ingenuity, and resolve of these people not to allow the cost of modern life to rule their lives, they are downscaling their lives but not giving up on the little necessities that we all have become accustomed to. Finding liked minded people in todays materialistic, expensive 'society' can be difficult but it appears these people are making it work . Good luck to them!

These people actually do clean up the community, literally because the street is an extention of their backyard and they keep it clean. I'm a minimalist and this life is very tempting. I'm full of so much stuff and I hardly use most of my stuff. I hope to get out there and do van life soon. God bless these guys.
Actually I live in a van and I can tell you people care. People care so much they call the cops on you to get you in trouble when you are doing nothing more thsn minding your business. Patrick, this amazes me - I never thought one could do this in the City. It's only a couple hours away from me but a whole different world. Kudos to all of Van Alley's occupants! Community indeed!
Hello I live in a different part of Brooklyn, in a skoolie, and I will say that if you are on the right street, people will just walk by and leave you alone. Once I opened my eyes to the fact of living in a home on wheels, I began to notice all the old and new RV's parked all over the city, that people are living in. Why pay $1300.00, for a room in Brooklyn, and have to share kitchen and bathroom with strangers. And I too have a cheap chinese diesel heater, and they are great.
Wow.- yes, I love seeing van-lifers travel together like this! Doing part-time Van Life in my Roadtrek RV is teaching me so much about how to have less stuff & more freedom/adventure with ease.
I walk around Brooklyn a lot, and I found many poor people living in their cars, old RVs and vans. They are brave people, because some places are not safe. Most of these people work, but rents are just very high.

Amazing, a solution in preventing homelessness in folks who just can't afford rent. I didn't know that building out vans in the city without a garage or driveway is inspiring! Love this!
After viewing many van life videos my impression is that if you don't camp in trailer parks most of the time then you enter into survival mode that stresses you out.
Been at it for a year and a half, paid for 7 nights in campgrounds that entire time. I don't stress. Most of the people stressing are doing so because they are new, just learning the ropes and lack self confidence. Once that resolves itself with experience it is mostly smooth sailing.
@@VANquishedAdventures Actually, van-living is pretty easy in NYC. I know the city so well and I know that there are many many safe and pretty places to park the van. I've been a vanlife weekend warrior for years and I've been watching vanlife videos just as long and this is the best one I've ever seen. Thanks for the great info!
This is amazing. I love to see the creativity and ingenuity involved in some of these van builds. Sadly, this would never fly in most cities, where overnight parking is strictly prohibited.
Finding parking to be undisturbed will increasingly become difficult. Even in national forest and BLM land, they're adding more restrictions. Walmarts more and more are banning overnights. Rest stops are putting up time limits for some amount of hours. A lot of used vans will probably hit the market over the next year, and it will be people who can afford rent but thought they'd save money, and realize there are too many headaches and legislation efforts to make it harder. The people who will make it work will be those who decide those headaches aren't as painful as giving away most of what they make at their job to rent: a van is depreciating, but rent is zero equity.
Very interesting video. You all have a roof ovet your heads, thank goodness. Have a good life all of you, p.s. you are a good looking man too. From Australia.

Vandwelling can be done here in NYC. There are 2 in my neighborhood far uptown, they are quiet, discreet, clean, no problems. There is parking, but you will have to move more often, sorry to see van alley going away. For my research so far, most people that seem to make van life work are retired and not usually full-time. If you are entrepreneurial or skilled professional, if you have passive income or inherited a decent chunk, you can make it. If you are wise and don't wear out your welcome, friends and family can give you a break occasionally. A great possibility for this lifestyle is pairing it with university study- for the cost of one class per semester you have access to a cafeteria, a gym, sometimes a pool, bathrooms, a library and employment opportunities, and with a parking permit, now you don't have to move the van as often. Another possibility with van life is the potential to make it on a part-time income.
I sincerely hope this video does not attract the wrong attention. Good for them on finding an alternative way around the rat race and ridiculous cost of housing. I agree in letting certain “friends” go. Best wishes.
They are still beholden to the rat race. They need to work to buy food and improvements for the vans. The only difference is they are much more mobile than someone who has, say, a house mortgage.
If you get a condo cab rig you could make a shit ton of money hauling loads, seeing the country, living where you want, essentially doing the same thing but making $5K-$10K+ per week. Just need a Class A CDL and a rig. I'm out in my rig all week and at my house on weekends. Best of both worlds.
Living life on your terms is the best way you're free on your debt free as I am.. and I also do not pay rent no credit check no first deposits.. know how to make three times the money to get apartment how no.. Freedom baby alternative living is definitely way to go I love it I support it and I'll never ever ever ever pay rent again as long as I live..
Great video! I'm visiting Brooklyn from Chicago for a month. I had the option to book a room and the cheapest option was $1400 for a room I liked and parking was seperate. I drive a pickup truck and bought a buddy heater and an air mattress for the back seat and am sleeping in my truck. I park and sleep mainly at a vince lombardi service area or at an indoor parking very close to work. Can't believe I saved $1400. I shower at LA fitness and only eat out.

Way to live in NY, guys and gals! Legend. Everything good for all you at Van Alley. Van Alley: a state of being. I lived in NYC for a decade. I spent the last few years in Park Slope, living mostly rent free in apartments my cousin the developer was warehousing for condos. I had to move every year or so, but rent free in NY works. It's an amazing place. Y'all have fun now, ya hear?
@@Blaaclava Warehousing was an 80s/90s term that had to do with gentrifying. I have no idea if term is used anymore, but the activity remains: buying up entire apartment buildings in areas that are going to increase in value (which is pretty much every area now with population explosion becoming unavoidably obvious), or areas you are going to "force" to increase in value. The entrepreneur may be required to have a certain percentage of apartments occupied as they try to get out the remaining tenants. They put their friends or family in there as placeholders. It may be a legal necessity. I don't know either way. I know my cousin was not the best person. Then they repair and upgrade the buildings and apts and sell them as condos/coops/condops. I don't know the legalities because I was only one of the placeholders being invited to live rent free, as long as I was willing to move every year or so to a new apt in the hood. Many complain about gentrification and it would be a beautiful thing for everyone to have a safe home of their liking. I hope our world can eventually accommodate everyone in a humane way. There's a lot of work to be done in that direction.) The experience on the ground was this: the beautiful boned old brownstones my cousin was buying usually had multiple vacancies and many sketchy occupants. They were not being taken care of by the renters and had not been cared for by the former landlords. Each building was in very bad shape. One had been a bona fide crack house that needed to be cleaned up for everyone's benefit. One, that I lived in for over a year, had a number of heroin addicts and one grandma aged heroine dealer living there. Heroine addicts are generally safer to live around than crack heads because they're usually mellower. Obviously they can't be trusted when they're jonesing so you want to lock up your camels, but crack heads are usually a dramatic danger to anyone in their vicinity whether they're high or not. A couple times when I came home from work, I stepped over them passed out and drooling in the stairwell with rubber tied around an arm. Park Slope is now an extremely high end neighborhood. Good or bad, I was there for the first part of the transition.

This is amazing. I love to see the creativity and ingenuity involved in some of these van builds. Sadly, this would never fly in most cities, where overnight parking is strictly prohibited.
Thank you for checking this out Esther
Finding parking to be undisturbed will increasingly become difficult. Even in national forest and BLM land, they're adding more restrictions. Walmarts more and more are banning overnights. Rest stops are putting up time limits for some amount of hours.
A lot of used vans will probably hit the market over the next year, and it will be people who can afford rent but thought they'd save money, and realize there are too many headaches and legislation efforts to make it harder. The people who will make it work will be those who decide those headaches aren't as painful as giving away most of what they make at their job to rent: a van is depreciating, but rent is zero equity.

Sorry it’s not for you
Vandwelling can be done here in NYC.
Thank you for the useful information.

Great interview. Love the idea of living in the van especially in NYC. Living simple/going back to the basics and stop feeding the beast of 4 grand for rent.
Bk
Exactly, stop feeding the Beast. 👍
I Love living this lifestyle, "in my Chevy Van and that's alright with me."
The feeling of Freedom is Amazing. ✌️
Why live in NYC though? So they can go out to bars?
The last few minutes of this video were great and inspirational
Thank you very much
I don't blame you all. This really the way to go. You can make this work. More family members get what you need to accommodate them. Rent is ridiculous. So proud.
I love these types of group and real life videos. Demonstrating not just alternative living but also perhaps a method of keeping needed alternative contract workers in New York. If your cost of living is lower then you can perhaps be open to different types of work- that may be needed but not well paid. This city may still need those workers. Great type of video.
I am happy you enjoyed this video
FOLLOW RV7 LIVE AND CAPTAIN CONTENT THEY HAVE 24 hr streams 😆 like they say IP2 always wins
Awesome video. The stories behind the van is just as important and interesting to know. Really enjoyed this episode. Shout Out to Patrick coming from Toronto Canada 🇨🇦
Glad you enjoyed it
these guys know how to survive any situation they adapt nicely
They really do
I bought an rv camper van last year and was on the road all year during the pandemic. I keep an apt in Manhattan, barely at this point but I’m still here living rent free. I had no idea this community exists and I’m super impressed you guys can do this full time. The nypd doesn’t ever give these guys a hard time ? Given this city I’m amazed.
Thank you for sharing your story. No challenges like that in this alley but the days are numbered
@@NewJerseyOutdoorAdventures im amazed they could do this but I totally agree. Nypd busted a bunch of vans doin illegal air Bnb ma recently. The attitude of rent paying nyc residents is why should you live cheap if we all gotta pay.
Thank you very much for the feedback Erika
What is warehousing for condos 🤔
@@Blaaclava no idea what they are talking about lol
The cameras on the outside idea is awesome!!!
It’s a good piece of mind
Living his best life! Great video Patrick. I loved learning about the Van Alley community. I realize I can afford waterfront property in NY after all!
I am happy you enjoyed it.
@@NewJerseyOutdoorAdventures This is the closest to being free as a bird..Im thinking of doing this for 8 months & only pay rent in winter.
