We took this video to show you how to Fix a COMMON Problem on a Chrysler Pt Cruiser. So far we had 3 pt cruisers with the same problem at the shop. When you drive the car and your dash light come on & off and the speedometer and tachometer quit working for a few seconds and then come back it is caused by the wires that go in the ignition switch. Most of the time there is a metal plate underneath the steering column that the wires rub against, or the wires going to the ignition switch are too loose. Which occurred to us in this video. Very rare but it happens to be the ignition switch itself.

i am currently going through this now and my mechanic told me could be something with the ignition switch so hopefully this may be the problem instead of replacing the whole switch. This was very hopeful and finally will be much closer to solving the problem. Thank you so much for your video so much of pt cruiser community appreciates you.
My 2006 pt cruiser was doing the same thing. I saw your video brought my car into my mechanic. The mechanic got the check engine codes. 8 different codes showed up not related to each other. They thought I needed a whole computer board. They then googled this video that I told them about. They did exactly what you said. Problem fixed! Thank you sooooo much.
Good to know it. But you had checked to see if these error codes were clear afterwards?
SWEET! Air bag light came on couple of months ago (clockspring), purchased a replacement waiting for me to install. Temps got hot, dashlights started doing this flicker thing. Saw your video, replaced the clockspring, and corrected the contacts on this plug. One week later, problem has not come back!!! BTW, my 2009 is a basic model with no buttons on the steering wheel. Bought the clockspring on ebay for $17 dollars. Several car models use the same clockspring, look for "106AF" in big typeface. I think mine said it was for a Jeep 🙂 Thank you for the video! UPDATE: Been a month, no recurrence, NICE!
Thank you so much for posting the video! Most people would just replace the ignition switch and not think twice about WHY it wasn't working in the first place. A lose wire, that's it! Excellent vehicle diagnosis!!

2006 pt cruiser.... started with gauges going crazy...eventually so bad all power to engine stopped.... this fixed the issue thank god!!! also thought we needed to replace the starter and this fixed the starter issue also
I actually cleaned my battery terminals, as they had a lot of corrosion, and it fixed the problem.

Well, glad I saw this video. I've been having this problem with an 07 PT Cruiser I've recently acquired. Hopefully, mine is a simple fix like this one.
Thanks my 2008 PT Cruiser had all instrument lights come on while driving today for no reason. I never lost power etc. If it happens again I'll hope it is a simple fix like this video. Thanks I love people sharing knowledge on UA-cam.

I fixed the red light but the connector was bad. Had to buy new one to solder on.
Now the car runs again with no red dot on dash.

This seems like my 2003 pt cruiser problem. At first only when I turned left, then turn right also, then over any bump in the road even when the car is off any bump causes the overhead light to go on and the chime to ding and the word door to go on. All goes back to normal as the overhead light fades off and the word door light disappears unless there is a bump. I have turned the dash lights off via the steering wheel stick where the controls are but at night of course no lights on the dashboard. I could not quite tell what you did to the wire connections, did you actually screw tighten them or something else?

I spent $500 a couple months ago getting an electrical diagnostic and electrical repair work done because my instrument cluster was doing this exact thing on my 2007 pt cruiser. They told me rats ate my wiring and and it's fixed but it started doing it again. Seeing this video now and I know I got ripped off for sure. I only found this video because I'm installing a back-up cam and trying to figure out if the purple-and-black wire on the back up light is the positive

Finally found the right video
I inherited my grandmother's 2006 PT Cruiser and this was a problem when she was driving it. I took it to the Chrysler dealership where she bought it and they couldn't figure out the problem. They said they drove it and saw the cluster lights come on but the lights didn't stay on long enough for them to get back to the dealership to connect it to the diagnostic machine. I'm going to try this and hope that it works.
I think the problem with this is different things can cause the dash cluster to bug out so everyone has slightly different problems. One observation i have noticed atleast in my case is that this happens to me only when i turn the dome light on manually by turning the interior lights/brightness switch all the way on and then clicking it over to the last setting that keeps the dome light on. Only when i turn my dome light on manually by doing that is when my car freaks out and the cluster lights comes on, gauges go down and car stalls. Definitely an electrical problem, im going to start by checking the fuse for the dome light then go from there.

Hi there! I have a question for you. I have a 2006 PT Cruiser and it's been doing this for months on and off. Yesterday after erratically doing this it stopped and wouldn't come back on at all. Before I take it to get serviced I just want to know if this could be the reason it stopped?

+World Mechanics hi! have the same problem now. it comes and goes, it will blink one time and ding one time and stay on. then will go away and blink one time again with one ding. any idea what might be the problem or how I can fix this? I highly appreciate it .
I've found that most of the time it is the IGNITION SWITCH. Replace the Ignition Switch! You will not be able to do this yourself, because of the anti-theft screw head on top of the switch. One hour of labor ($90) and the switch from the dealer is $51. Total: $141.

Hello and thanks for the video. I have been having this problem for several years. Its pretty annoying. Sometimes it causes the car to stall out which can be scary. I did everything you suggested in this video and all pieces looked good. The Problem is still happening. What should i look at next?

My 06 PT does same , but sometimes stalls out and air condition won't work . I bought car new and Chrysler wouldn't do anything for me , even on warranty . It also burnt oil from day one . There explanation is they all do that . Took intake plenum off to change sparkplugs , and found oil in the plenum . This suggests bad oil stem seals . This week car turned to 60,000 miles . As you can see I haven't driven it much . I'm not a kid I'm 65 years old . I have changed oil and filters every 3,000 miles myself .I truly have the P T from hell and wish I had never bought this car . Thanks Chrysler for EFFING me .

I'm surprised there isn't more information on here about that. Makes sense because my terminals just started to get gummed up then the gauge went out while driving..Gonna do the terms first :)

This happened to 2 of my pt cruisers. The first one ended up in an accident and getting sold. With the last one I had an ignition switch put in and it solved the problem with the flashing lights, but now my door chime goes off when I open the door even when the key is removed. It says that the door is ajar and that the key is in the ignition. Also my clicker won't open and lock doors. I have to do it manually. Can you help?
Would this particular problem cause the car to stall as well? My 09 is doing the same thing but the engine cuts out and dies as well sometimes
Had 2009 cruiser instrument cluster lights whent crazy and the car would stall wires were good so I replaced the ignition switch 30$ and it fixed it
Hello, I have been having this problem for months now. Is it possible for this to affect the performance of the vehicle. Sometimes when I am pulling out of a parking space or making a u turn. All of a sudden when I put the car in drive. I start rolling in reverse. Also when im driving all if a sudden the car feels lie it doesn't want to go. I give it gas but the engine just revs until finally it jerks and speeds up. PLEASE HELP IF POSSIBLE!!

Have put up with this problem for quite some time. My mechanic could not figure it out, I had the ignition switch replaced any way about 6 months ago. I still get the problem randomly and will try this. But just worried about deploying the air bag. if i disconnect the battery and wait 15 minutes then start working on the wires will that be safe, thanks in advance.

my battery, a delco, was at fault. had dash lights come on followed by stalling as well as a very long seat belt alarm. even blew a 10amp fuse . tried to charge battery, got an F01 error on a trickle charger and never finished on a regular charger

Someone should sue Chrysler for breaking their car. Had to pay 137 $ towing , 200 $ ECM , and 350 $ tmc all because the Damn code that don't tell you what to fix only leaving you waiting for a tow truck . And it's not fixed yet so anyone want to buy a cherry PT Cruiser ?

Are you talking about the analog clock above the window switches? If so, press and hold the little peg on the bottom until it reads the time you want. The digital radio clock is more complicated.

Did that. No difference.Dash lights all come on at once and tach and speedo quit.Go out next morning and there is a dead short somewhere.Not even a regular boost will start the car.

Hey World Mechanics and everyone else with the cluster lights problem. I figured out how to fix the one huge problem with both the cluster lights on going all crazy and the problem with the vehicle turning off. I uploaded a video explaining what i did. I will describe here just in case you don't want to see my video. To make this explanation short, I had to buy a used ignition switch assembly for $65 and "flashed" in a way, the alarm system synchronized with the cars CPU.. Ok look to make things easy just watch my video for exact explanation cause, its been more than 6 months and i have not had the same problem, ive only had the problem with my cars battery being old or the battery terminals being corroded and needed to be cleaned or replaced.
And what does it have to do with the fact that the car wants to turn off when it goes on the road?

Omar Bustos my problem began like this video... all the dashlights comin on and gauges goin down and back up. Now, my car will intermittently start. I am leaning toward ignition switch from what it was doing like in this video, but also am reading that a bad ignition relay can cause the intermittent starting.

Please tell me what does the red dot bottom center indicate? I have never seen this come on until a couple of days ago. AAA came out and scanned my car and showed the starter was getting zero power but the alternator is good and the battery is good.
I don't know if I need to fix the cluster as in this video, replace the starter or ignition switch. For a couple of days my car would not start right away, then it did and drove as usual. Eventually it would not crank at all.
Additionally the key fob insides were missing?!?! At first I thought this was the problem, I don't know how this happened. I replaced the battery in the fob I screwed the case back together and the night that my car broke down I noticed that the insides (the little motherboard) were completely gone yet the case was still screwed together. There is one hole of a missing button but the battery alone is three times the size of that hole. I have no idea how this happened.
I'm on extremely limited funds the mechanic I like has me by parts than he installs but I don't want to buy a new starter if I don't need it then have to return it as I've no transportation to do all of the errands. I don't know if it's okay for me to do the procedure you have in this video or if he should do it I don't have those T screwdrivers for the security issue. I am pretty handy I've done a lot of work on this car and previous cars that I've owned so I'm not afraid to try something like this but I don't want to do damage.

What a scam!!! It doesn't matter if the cables behind the connector moves one way or another, the blue plastic 3:28 piece inside is a second lock which secures the terminal assembly and position in the contact area. By bending the terminals 3:39 you can break the terminals (contact) and damage the mate connector

Hi. I have 2006 Pt Cruiser.
Dash lights issue.
Well we live and hopefully we learn. One day while driving and thinking..i hit my steering wheel with my fists..like maybe around the 10 and 2 position ...and ...a bunch of dash lights came on!😮. So to try to get them off i hit the dashboard and they went off.
But that was just in my community. Maybe a few weeks later I was on a major road and had issue with seeming to lose my acceleration power when the dash lights came on...but they went off pretty fast...and after they went off..i got restored power to power gas pedal. Im not sure why power cut out...but apparently on other internet locations..people may have mentioned have had stalling and or whatever. That was pretty scary for me.
With this video...what is that black plug piece called if i want to describe it to someone? Is that the ignition switch or something else? The black plug thing that he tightened screw(s?) on? Thank you.
And..does anyone know why did i lose ability to have acceleration while dash lights were on?
And when lights went out i was able to get gas power again?
