I was born and raised a Catholic and did 13 years in Catholic schools. Even way back then we were not taught that Genesis was literal. We did bible stories when really little but as soon as proper schooling started we were taught about science and how the bible should be looked as a way ancient people made sense of the world and how they should live their lives. This creationist thing seems like an American phenomena that's been exported to the christian world.

    • @vegeta4693214
      @vegeta4693214 2 роки тому +3

That's due to a difference in religion. Catholics have sources outside the bible like saints and the Pope, while the different branches of protestant Christianity only rely on the bible and their interpretation of it. And of course if your only source of knowledge of God is the bible, then the bible cannot be wrong or else the very foundation of your belief falls apart.

Cultural context of each book, knowledge of how it has morphed over time, context of what was trying to be told at the time it was written. Context is essential in understanding ancient stories as the mindset of storytelling itself has changed dramatically over time. For example, if you read myths from The Egyptian Book of the Dead, they are using storytelling to explain the existence of the physical world through metaphor. If you had no understanding of that, and read it, it would just seem like a bizarre drama about incest and sibling rivalry.

The best that the 21st century has offered to the science of history studies, religious studies and folklore studies is Bart Ehram. That is why we should only listen to and read Ehram’s lectures and papers, not anyone else’s. Anyone who has at least read Ehram’s blogs knows how good he is and I don’t think anyone else has to challenge Ehram. And I’m not kidding, Ehram is really superior in his own field of science. And the fact that Ehram is so popular and so genius proves that Ehram is right in his opinions. And that’s an even bigger reason why we should only listen to Ehram on this subject. And therefore, on the other hand, it is good that there are even some smaller universities that reject the studies of all other scholars except Ehram in their teaching. And that's how it should be. In this debate, too, Ehram proved why, by far.

@@vernonchitlen8958 Even if you prove the theory of biogenesis false, it still doesn't make your claim true.
      Those are separate issues.
The theory of biogenesis can be false while Christianity still being false.
You realize that you believe a magical being created all life out of nothing? (Without trying to explain how that would be even possible.) So in the end, who is actually required to have more "faith"? At least science is trying to explain how something like the life that we see has occurred.
One last thing to think about: Genesis makes many claims about how life came to be on this planet. Do you believe that is all scientifically accurate? (There is mountains of evidence that disprove the Genesis accounts.) How many peer reviewed papers have been written about how the Genesis accounts are true?
You may want to work on your own skepticism of your religion a bit more before jumping on the defensive there buddy.

I would love to see all the scientific awards you would win by demonstrating that you can create something from nothing.
You are committing the same fallacy as someone who doesn't do or read the research themselves.
You're trusting on something you can't verify, your holy book, to tell you where life came from.
Who wrote this book? What background in science do they have? Can you be sure they actually heard from god and aren't making shit up?
Again, none of this proves that Jesus rose from the dead. Show me, better yet, prove to me that Jesus rose from the dead?
You are very gullible to believe that Jesus rose from the dead, and take it as fact, when you're equally extremely skeptical of a scientific theory.
Science doesn't claim a theory to be always true. If you can prove that it is false, the theory is revised.
With Christianity, it is the complete opposite: No matter how many times you prove their faith to be false, they never revise their beliefs. How much evidence do we have to present to Christians before they realize their mistake in believing in a false God?
I know this is your grand defense in a god, but none of it does any good in defending your holy book.
I'm not a scientist, but I know for a fact that the bible is a book of fiction.

also it is almost obligatoir that the first 2 verses are translated and read as two seperated lines.
when they are read as one sentence ( as someone did on the net) you get a different story. It seems the subject of that sentence is in verse 2 while verse 1 is an indication of when verse 2 happened.
A kind of resuffle putting the subject up front and the time indication last gave me this:
Void and formless was the earth with the spirits of the gods hovering above the face of the floods
      and darkness covering the deeps,
when at the start the gods shaped the heavens and the earth.
probably someone with knowledge of Hebrew would disagree and argue that "bara""can only mean "create" and not "giving shape.
Another scolar told that Genesis 1 can best be interpretated as a metaphore for sunrise on a new day.
Quite a different take then those apologists who shout that when you don't take Genesis 1 as a historical fact you deny Jesus.
Ehrman himself is the best exemple, by taking Genesis metaphoric and believing in a historic Jesus, that the apologist vieuw is utterly stupid.

Sorry, one other comment here. It’s very helpful to distinguish between “literal” and “historical.” Just because a narrative is non-historical doesn’t mean it’s best interpreted non-literally. To use one of Ehrman’s examples, “David Copperfield” does not narrate historical events, though it has a realistic historical setting. But “David Copperfield” isn’t meant to be read figuratively or allegorically. Similarly there are stories in Genesis that can’t be taken seriously today as historical reports, but that doesn’t mean you have to resort to a figurative interpretation. You can also conclude that the authors/editors intended to present a historical narrative, but they were incorrect; or you can conclude that the authors/editors didn’t intend to present a historical narrative, but later readers have misunderstood the genre; or some other variation. Historical narratives can also be clothed in allegory; that isn’t quite what’s happening in Orwell’s “Animal Farm,” but it’s close enough to get the point.

I'm Catholic, and I know that for about the last several hundred years most serious Catholic scholars have been very honest with their understanding of sources and meanings of the most ancient parts of the Old Testament and this Doctor is very spot on, totally.
The Catholic Church accepts Genesis 1 and 2 as metaphorical and accepts modern theories of Cosmological and Biological beginnings and formations. Hence, why I love alot of channels like this one and am still a Christian.

I have to say that one of the most impressive scholarly observations about Genesis is that of Britain's Samuel Rolles Driver' (1846-1914) cf. his comments in his commentaries (1904-1926) on Genesis1-11.
    Driver: (1904) :
"We have in the first chapter of Genesis the Hebrew version of an originally Babylonian legend respecting the beginning of all things...Israel stripped the old legend of its pagan deformities. Its shape and outline survived. But its spirit was changed, its religious teaching and significance were transformed..." (p.31)
"In fact, no archaeologist questions that the biblical cosmogony, however altered in form and stripped of its original polytheism, is, in its main outlines, derived from Babylonia." (p. 3)
"The evidence of archaeology, geology, biology, and allied sciences points to the conclusion that man,so far from having begun his existence upon the globe in the happy surroundings of an Eden, has slowly emerged from a state of savagery, in which he was, externally at least, little removed from the brute creation. His primitive condition was not one of harmony and happiness, but that of fierce conflict against opposing forces.
"Pain and death prevaiied upon the earth before man made his appearance, and have, it would seem, been prime factors in his evolution." cf. (p. 36. Samuel Rolles Driver. The Book of Genesis with introduction and notes. 6th edition. 1904. London. Westminster Commentaries.
