I played Cliffs of Dover's intro everyday for 30 days and this happened!

I first started learning Cliffs of Dover's intro more than 10 years ago but I was never able to play it as clean as I want it to be. So after getting inspired by other talented musicians online, I decided that this year, I will try everything I can to get it to sound as close to the record as I can.
That's how the COD30 challenge came about (COD for Cliffs of Dover of course lol). I'd play the actually riff as well as pentatonic scale runs for at least 30min to a hour or two a day, and record at least one take no matter how sloppy it sounded.
By slowing things down and identifying what notes I'm missing, I was able to clean up a lot of the parts. However, the final riff at the end of the solo would still screw me over. And that's something I've been having a hard time with for all those years.
Until one day, while I was watching this madlad @Guitrm319 's cover and I noticed that he was doing something VERY different than me. And it was....
ECONOMY PICKING!
After having that revelation, I immediately started practicing with economy picking and it completely transformed my playing. Within a few hours I was able to accomplish what I wasn't able to for the past 10+ years! Can you believe that!?

I am forever grateful for your kind words and encouragement! 🙏🏾🙏🏽🙏🏼 Eric's style is deceitfully difficult because you think it's just pentatonic but it takes years of disciplined drills to be able to pick those "simple" pentatonic licks at that speed and precision. So in addition to practicing COD I also practiced pentatonic in those 30 days. Just the boring, up and down run through all five positions like when I first learned the pentatonic lol (back to the basic eh?) But unlike when I first picked up pentatonic, I'm also memorizing the root notes this time for both minor and major keys. It's been VERY helpful to say the least. Haha I would say I am just the one talking about it xD after I realized the importance of using economy picking, I see it in other people's covers too. I was just too dumb to realize it and wasted many years trying to alt-pick thru it 🤣I appreciate the kind words regardless! 😁🙏

well practicing everyday paid off for you, I wish i could play half as good as you do. I'm trying to learn, but it's hard when you suffer from a traumatic brain injury. My short term memory gives me lots of problems, but if you can do it, I'm sure i can learn how to play too, thanks for the video and introducing me to economy picking, thanks you rock bro keep it up.
Hey thank you for your heart felt comment! Practice will pay off for you too! I know it sounds cliche and it’s honestly quite impossible for humans to fully practice this but don’t compare yourself to others. Every time I go online I feel bad about my playing lol but then when I look back to what I can do now vs before, I feel better. Hopefully you got something useful from this so you don’t end up spending years to find something so simple like me 🤣😂🤣
Amazing dedication mate, well played. The bit I struggle with most is palm muting with the right hand to make everything sound clean - especially during the hybrid picking section. Any tips or tricks that helped you?
I appreciate the kind words man! I'll make a video on that topic once I'm settled from my international move! I can't say there's a magical thing that can instantly make a difference like the economy picking here but there are drills I did to eventually get thru that part!

Haha glad you find it funny! You can always start slow! I was playing at 50-70% speed for many many years and it was still never clean at full speed til recently 😅 (Welp, cleanER than before lol) consistency is everything!

I admire your perseverance. It sure sounds like you figured out the right way to play it. When I heard it was economy picking, I thought he was using fingers along with the pick.

Iv tried to learn it many times but i always give up coz i just cant get there. But this inpires me to give it another try.
Persistent is the key! It’s okay if you’re still can’t get it, the goal is to never stop. Come back to it every once a while. So long you never stop playing and you keep learning new thing, you’ll get it eventually! 🔥🤘🏽
I have the intro tab from an old guitar magazine and its sextine.
Nice! Does it have notation for picking direction? Majority of the tabs I’ve seen don’t include that which make sense. But that was the what I missed lol but then again perhaps they did I just didn’t read lmaoooo
@@Shredberry It doenst. I always played the final part of the intro with alternate picking starting with down pick since the tab shows 6 notes for time. Works for me
