I am glad you mentioned making an appointment for confession because sometimes you just need a little more time with your confessor when you're struggling with a grave sin. Most of the time it's a general confession which doesn't require much time so you wouldn't need an appointment.
I have to say, when in the distant past, ( I’m too old now! ) I had to confess sins of chastity/ purity, I was petrified I would scandalise the priest… it took me a long time to get through it.
It was 35 years before I went back to confession. My priest gave me this to read back to him . I hope this will help some. Forgive me my sins O Lord. Forgive me my sins; the Sins of my youth, the sins of my age, the sins of my soul, the sins of my body; my idle sins, my serious voluntary sins, the sins I know, the sins I do not know; the sins I have concealed so long, and which are now hidden from my memory. I am truly sorry for every sin, mortal and venial , for all the sins of my childhood up to the present hour. O my Saviour, let me be freed from the bonds of evil through the most bitter Passion of my Redeemer. Amen. O my Jesus, forget and forgive what I have been. Amen

Would you please pray for this special intention. Years ago when in Missouri I was a Communion Minister. Agter my husband's death the kids and I moved back to Illinois. At a Mass in my home parish one more CM was needed. I went up. Because we had a Mass said in our home years before, I wanted to feel safe with Jesus physically here with my Mom, daughter, son & myself, so I brought 1 consecrated Host home. I didn't have my pick (spelling) with me that day but had a small heavy plastic case. At home it was placed in our china cabinet. Looked on it often. But now have not seen it. Confessed to Father. He explained why, even though a CM. I should not have done it and what would have been needed in our home to do so, non of which was explained at our parish in Fulton. I"m carefully searching for it. That is why I am asking you to pray for a miracle to find this Consecrated Host. I attend Mass on line weekdays and have been fortunate io go to Mass on Sundays. Thank you✝️🙏 Wonderful talk. Wish more could hear it.
Maybe something ate the Host, like a rat or something. That would be kind of horrible. I hope you find it but have some peace in knowing God forgives You and understands why you did it. Maybe He even thought it was kinda funny.
This is so helpful. I enjoyed listening to all your points and suggestions. They definitely will help me have a better Confession. God bless you and keep you always 🙏 ❤️ 💛
I appreciate the part "I don't want to cut you off." a couple of times, I felt I was being rushed to tell my sins. Would Christ do that? was my thought afterward. Setting an appointment is probably the best choice.
Good stuff! I love that he gives examples of what a priest goes through during confession as well. For example, it makes it easier on the priest when you let him know your situation at the start, and also letting him know that these are my sins…and I am truly sorry which let’s him know you’re finished. I needed this refresher as I’m going to confession today for the first time since prior to the Covid pandemic. Thank you.
this helps me out as much....thank you Fr Mark-Mary for sharing examples of Sacrament of Reconciliation, examination of conscience. For me, I have a difficult time how to 'present' the sins. Fr. Mark. Mary_ I was, very encouraged by your message today. Although I find getting back to sacraments very difficult. Almost panic attack tough. I am so far from practice, I don't know where to begin. Last time I was in confession, I cried for fear? maybe? Not sure. Just a little embarrassed as I left . I will follow your outline, but honestly I fade back at the beginning when you want those seeking forgiveness need to be in a place of mercy and love . it is a solemn time not really sad,but you often hear 'wiped clean. a new slate, ' not so easy. so more tears, which is so distracting . well, agonizing since I can't pull it together and then as time goes on, greater guilt, sorry for explanation.. Thank you, pray for me.. Your message was encouragement..
Hey! I have some advice to help you! Tip 1: Go to a priest you don’t know and do a face to face confession. You’ll be less likely to cry when looking at a stranger- but if you do- they will be able to help you better since they can see how you are doing. Tip2: Find a retreat to attend that has confession on the agenda. The environment and atmosphere will help prepare your mind for confession. I went to a Catholic Convention in Iowa and they had many confessionals there and the priest was so kind and comforting. Tip3: If you prefer, you could go to a priest you are more familiar with and perhaps his voice will help you remain calm in the confessional since it is easier to trust a friend. ❤ Praying for you! I have struggled to be calm too 😅 everybody has their moments.
Thank you so much, Fr. Mark-Mary! This is probably the most comprehensive and yet simple explanation about confession. By the way, can a retired priest still listen to confessions? God bless you.🙏🙏

I believe if you willfully held back a sin, it means your confession was not valid and now you’ve doubled your sins. Instead of being purified, you’ve darkened your heart more. However, that doesn’t mean your future confessions wouldn’t be valid! Please, go to confession and tell the priest you have omitted sin in confession before and that you’re now truly sorry. I’m speaking from experience. I held back a sin when I was a teen BEFORE being confirmed. Thanks be to God, upon having a deeper conversion in my late twenties, God merciful. :)
There are at least 10 different sites all in a row talking about how to make a good confession. I am sure some are the same as toe others. Which means there are a lot of bored priests out there. James said we are to confess to one another. That is a good thing if you trust the person you are confessing to. But we all have things that we don't want to share with anyone, that includes a priest. We can always go to Jesus and the Father and ask for forgiveness and they will always forgive if we repent, and turn away from that sin.
@@gr8bskt Jesus died for our sins. When we ask for forgiveness it happens. Sure we must repent but to say there is no absolution is saying He cannot forgive our sins. He died fir them, of course, He can forgive them.

In your prayer you confess your sins, ask for forgiveness. Only God knows your heart, the sinner in the booth next to you only knows your confession, your side of the story. :)
If you haven't confessed for many years. Do you have to schedule an appointment with the priest?
It would probably be the best thing to do. That way you can prepare properly and have all the time you need to say what you need to say.
The problem with this is 1) it ignores the Gospel; 2) there is no absolution, so no *guarantee* that your sins are actually forgiven.
@@gr8bskt Jesus died for our sins. When we ask for forgiveness it happens. Sure we must repent but to say there is no absolution is saying He cannot forgive our sins. He died fir them, of course, He can forgive them.
@@bcalvert321 FALSE THEOLOGY! Do not be a CONFESSION DENIER! Please note that we are taught to confess our sins to one another (James 5:16). The Apostles received power over sin from Christ ( Matthew 16:19, 18:18, John 20:23). They handed it on to their successors. Paul forgave sins IN THE PERSON OF CHRIST and with the authority of Christ (2 Corinthians 2:10). Orthodox and Catholic have received this teaching directly from the Apostles and have practiced it continuously since 33 AD. How about for impure sexual thoughts sometimes intrusive, should I specifiy those impure thoughts?
If those thoughts just cross your mind and you reject them, it is not a sin. However ,if you let those thoughts become full scenarios and wish to fulfill those desires, that will be a mortal sin.
Is going to an all you can eat Restaurant the sin of Gluttony? I am currently in a hotel in Greece and we are eating a lot in the all you can eat Restaurant. I mean really a lot. So I was wondering whether this is the sin of Gluttony.
I might be wrong, but gluttony sin is when you're overeating. Examples are like over indulging in sweets, like loads of it or eating beyond already feeling full.
Anything outside of faith is sin
Matthew 15:11:" it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.”
Think of your heart....
Did you continue to eat after you were full? Did you continue to eat after you were no longer hungry? If so, that's the sin of gluttony.

... Bible says “ confess to one another ... people sin EVERY DAY!!! How one priest can “forgive” if the person you have hurt is STILL HURTING!!! You need to confess to the person you’ve hurt and ask him/her for forgiveness and ask God for forgiving YOU hurting one of His children ....
I committed wrath to myself and others.

You can confess your sins even driving along , God hears your thoughts as you think them , a preist is not needed ,,
The best confession is when you are alone, on your knees, praying to our Heavenly Father!
That's not confessing it's praying!
@@liw12 Ironic when asked how we should pray Jesus not once said to go into a little booth, confess your sins to another sinner and that sinner will forgive you the sins you have committed against God! In your prayer you confess your sins, ask for forgiveness. Only God knows your heart, the sinner in the booth next to you only knows your confession, your side of the story. They have no authority to forgive you but in order to make you feel better about yourself, they tell you that you are forgiven. In some, most, all cases they tell you to perform an act, a ritual, and then your sin will be forgiven. Jesus, on the cross, is the one act that gains us forgiveness for all of our sins, past, present, and future! You have the freedom to decide for yourself but I choose to listen to Jesus!

To confess your sins to a man is blasphemy. The only one who can forgive you of your sins as Jesus Christ as he is the son of God. To confess to some priest or “ father” it’s not going to help you work your way into heaven. Salvation is through grace only offered by the son of God not buy another man.
