  • The Average White Band - Put it Where You Want It - The Old Grey Whistle Test (1973)
Alan Gorrie -- bass, guitar, vocals
Hamish Stuart -- bass, guitar, vocals
Roger Ball -- keyboards, alto saxophone, vocals
Malcolm Duncan -- tenor saxophone, vocals
    Onnie McIntyre -- guitar, vocals
    Robbie McIntosh -- drums, percussion
Put It Where You Want It - Written By Joe Sample
Put it where you want it
    That won't take much time
We can make the best of it and I could make you mine
Put it where you want it
Bring your love over here ( bring it to me)
One thing that I'm sure of honey, mine won't disappear
Put it where you want it
Lay it on the line, (lay it down) you can share your love around
And I can share my time (I can share with nobody)
Put it where you want it, well that ain't hard to do
One man has to win your love, one of us has got to lose
I've been searching the whole wide world
But love like yours is so hard to find
Put it where you want it
Put it where you want it
Put it where you want it
Put it where you want it, I just want you to know
    That won't take much time
We can make the best of it and I could make you mine
Put it where you want it
Bring your love over here ( bring it to me)
One thing that I'm sure of honey, mine won't disappear
I guess there must be at thousand guys who want you
But I'm the one who wants you the most
Put it where you want it
Put it where you want it
Put it where you want it
Put it where you want it
Put it where you want it
Put it where you want it
Put it where you want it
Put it where you want it

I was lucky enough to see them a couple of months before this performance. They were the support band at Eric Clapton’s comeback concert at the Rainbow. First thing my older brother said was: ‘This drummer is very good.’ Saw the a few months later at St Albans Civic Hall; one big party. Happy days!

No disrespect to Steve Ferrone, but Robbie Mcintosh’s drumming is what made that first and best album groove!✌️😎

Steve Ferone is a drum God in his own right and he was hot on the tails of Robbie McIntosh, replacing him in more than one group.I think there is quite a bit of Robbie's playing in Steve Ferone - but Robbie McIntosh was definitely something special - great we have a few videos of his playing.

I hold Robbie McIntosh in singular reverence among drummers. His feel and subtle precision are unmatched in my experience. Hands down, he is the most under-appreciated drummer to ever live. For example: Pick up the Pieces is a very good song. Robbie McIntosh is what made it legendary - and few, if any, realize it. His minimalist style is so archetypal people often don't even hear him - but guaranteed, they feel him, Videos of him are about one shy of non-existent. This is the only one I've found so far. IF ANYONE KNOWS OF ANY OTHER VIDEO OF HIM, PLEASE CONTACT ME. This video may be a more important piece of history than it seems.

Thanks for appreciating Robbie and the AWB.I was fortunate enough to have seen them live from the 3rd row twice in 1973 and 1974. They opened for BB King and ZZ Top. UNBELIEVABLE shows. Thank you for the post.

+Eric Anthem . did Robbie McIntosh not die of a heroin overdose shortly after there first album?. maybe that's the reason there's not many vids of him. agree with you about his playing though. absolutely stunning work

True, agreed- Mc Intosh was a truly GREAT (light & funky) drummer. But, sadly for us all, he is NOT playing live on this episode of The Old Grey Whistle Test Show. Notice the mufflers on ALL drums + the fact that he is NOT opening them hi hats on certain syncopated pushes... NOTE: You can also heard him on another CLASSIC recording: The CHUCK BERRY London Sessions "My Ding-a-Ling"

Thank you, Eric. I searched this out wanting to (finally) see Robbie play. I always perceived something in his playing (besides his mind at work; something like love or the scent of a rose, though many people may not understand what I mean). My take, judging from his chops and vocabulary, is that he came up playing jazz. He passed away not long after this, at 24. If he could play like this in his early twenties, imagine, if he had lived he would be a household name. R.I.P., Robbie!

      @@djclay33 Blues,absolutely correct!!
Regarding Funk and new 70s Soul music______
James Brown ,,, Sly and The Family Stone,,, Curtis Mayfield,,,,The Meters,,,,Charles Wright and The 103rd St.Band had pushed the envelope during the last few years of the 1960s (along with a few others) creating Funk Music..
Every US baby, kid, teenager and young adult especially in Black and Brown communities were well aware of Funk!!
So were other races and nationalities both American and worldwide who were fans of Black music!!!
      Especially musicians and singers. !!
Make no mistake Funk in the 1970s USA was alive and well and NOBODY missed the 1969-1979 heyday!!
Many 1970s Soul and Funk hit records crossed over to mainstream radio exposing more teens.
Before record labels dropped large self contained Funk Bands in the 1980s;there were some huge Funk hits in the early to middle 80s but nowhere comparable to the 1970s quality and quantity of great Funk Music by good and great songwriters, musicians etc
It was everywhere in the US.
Clubs, bars, cars,AM and FM radio,,,,jukeboxes,,,Funk Cover bands/bands playing current hit music...
.HBCU and high school marching bands played it from day 1 .
Remember the 1970s brought change to both the radio industry and the music industry.
FM radio played long lp versions instead of radio edits.
Albums not singles were the main focus.
Sales of Funk,Soul, and R&B were increasing.
Receiving better promotion, bigger tours etc.was a direct benefit.
Reggae,,,,,,Funk,,Jazz Funk,,Soul,,,,Gospel,,,Soft Rock,,Southern Rock,,Arena Rock ,,R & B ,,,,Pop and even Country were all being featured like never before!!
Like you said Blues saw a revival and longtime artists were being reintroduced to American audiences via radio ,tours and even television appearances....
Funk never went away so it didn't have to be returned to American teens and young adults!!!
Of course there were people of all ages that just were not into nor interested in the Funk!!LOL!
1970s did not limit tv appearances by genres ...
TV variety shows exposed multitudes to the hottest musical acts....
USA shows such as::::Soul Train ,,,In Concert,,,,Sound Stage,,,Don Kirschners Rock Concert ,,,The Midnight Special and even Dick Clark's American Bandstand all introduced audiences to weekly music showcasing the hottest acts and the hit songs.
      Be Cool

I go back. This was taped a few months after AWB blew everyone's mind and stole the show from Clapton at his "comeback" at the Rainbow. The following winter -- November or December 1974 -- I caught them at a near-empty bar called Tulagi's in Boulder, Colorado, as they traveled back across the States with Ferrone filling in for the late, great Robbie, who had died just a couple of months earlier. The gig was a downer, a bizarre circumstance, the place was badly lit and empty--- and looking back, you see the determination to fulfill the scheduled dates at the moment Pick Up the Pieces was rising in the U.S. charts. They must've felt they had to do it and not disappoint Atlantic, etc., just as they were hitting in the States.

    • @stretch54

Robbie McIntosh was sorely missed after he died. He was more percussive and funky as evidenced by their debut album. Too bad for AWB.

    • @gusmartins6767
      @gusmartins6767 4 роки тому +1

stretch54 - Macintosh was very good. But if this is some thinly-veiled swipe at Steve Ferrone you guys are way off base. Different drummers for sure. Ferrone had nothing to do with Macintosh’s death. The band supposedly rehearsed a number of drummers. Even Stix Hooper and David Garibaldi offered to sit in and lift the band’s morale. When Ferrone showed up that entire trauma was put into perspective. They found their guy. Who on earth would turn down Steve Ferrone? I think he more than justified the band’s decision to want him.
