Polly V Build Diary

  • This film documents the building of a miniature steam
locomotive - a five inch gauge Polly V 2-6-0 tank engine.
Throughout the build, photographs were taken to record
all the steps of the developing locomotive.
This was mainly so they would provide a record of the
construction details for when it might need repairing.
Also, I don't have an engineering background and
had never done anything like it before, so wanted to
make a record of the build.
The fact that the build was successful (the loco has
now covered 300 track miles) is down to the high quality
of the parts made by Polly Engineering Ltd., and help
from members of the Ribble Valley Live Steamers club.
I do hope that this film might help explain how the
build of such a locomotive goes, and perhaps encourage
someone to have a go themselves.
The still photographs comprise most of the film, with the
remainder showing some early runs of the completed loco.
If you decide after the first minute or so that the film is
too detailed for you, then don’t persevere!
Alternatively you could skip towards the end where the
    running movies are.
If you do persist, I do hope that you find the film to be
useful and informative. And also that you enjoy the music!

Can't believe some people build these from a block of metal.. Even in kit form its a very complex machine. Beautiful build and video.

Brilliant have just put my order in. Could you do another one with details of painting i.e what paints you used and did you build it complete then strip it down to paint. What is the 4 wheeled trolley it's sat on looks like it has a handle to lift it up and down like a scissor lift ? loved the music i remember all of it from when I was a very small boy. engine looks beautiful well done.

Excellent recording great photos and what a fantastic ending well done I hope to build one this year was it tricky was there welding etc to do ?? Nice one and stunning little loco you have !!!!!

Thanks. No welding, nor machining with a Polly Engineering loco. Straightforward work with common hand tools, a moderate amount of fettling, and a lot of hours is what it needed. I expected that it would be more difficult than it was, although getting a decent paint finish took much longer than I expected. A steeper learning curve for me than for others, perhaps. Regards, Trainman..
