    May 8, 2019, London, UK
    Robert Lustig, MD, MSL, Professor of Pediatrics at the University of California, unravels how the brain’s ‘reward’ system has been hijacked by junk food and technology, leading to the twin epidemics of addiction and depression. Dr. Lustig is the author of the New York Times best selling book Fat Chance: The Bitter Truth About Sugar, as well as his most recent book, The Hacking of The American Mind: The Science Behind the Corporate Takeover of Our Bodies and Brains.

      Unfortunately, nutrition is a "soft science." We've got about 150 years of industrialized marketing and propaganda as evidence of that. With big money, you can try to make the science show what you want it to show. If that doesn't work, just keep repeating big lies. Money drives everything.
      In a perfect world, every child would learn the theory of evolution in school. From there, they would learn that all life is descended from previous life and all life is connected. Hopefully an appreciation that humans are just another animal that follows the laws of biology. And we are a "special" species in that we are the only animal that pre-processes and cooks our food. If we let industry do the cooking for us, well, that's when the trouble starts.

    The increase in sugar consumption just refers to the sugar industry and corn syrup industry. It does not address the many forms of sugar, which go by 61 different names. And this also does include refined flours (wheat, corn flour, corn starch, other refined flours) which break down in the mouth (enzymes in saliva) into sugar. I don't know if they will show a graph with the increase in white flour products or not, as I stopped the video temporarily to write this.

    Funny how he's saying this in the UK, when Recently UK doctors have been putting type 2 diabetes, and no alcoholic fatty liver disease patients into remission by modifying their diet and there have been more studies to the point that mainstream diabetes organizations are recommending it. They are also seeing a lowering of triglycerides and increasing HDL the good cholesterol so it also decreases heart disease risk. They have done this by their patients cutting out as much sugar and starches/ carbs as possible in their diet. And it has led to them losing weight significantly as well.

It simply lets you track what Daily Dozen (it's more than twelve) items you consume each day (it also tallies exercise, water, and necessary supplements. I like it, but I was already committed to and eating better for a few years before I used the app. There's also information about each food group or item explaining more about serving sizes and best sources and similar.

    Something happened to my brain four years ago, and now I have basically permanent sleep maintenance insomnia. It has drastically reduced my quality of life, and CBTI hasn't even been able to dent it. 6 hours of sleep is a _good_ night for me. And all I keep hearing is how critical sleep is to health. I'm kinda boned.

      I have no idea whether yor insomnia is due to the similar causes as mine, but;
      I've had insomnia for years and recently tried fasting (last time 3 weeks with only water) and my insomnia kind of miraculously disappeared, for the first time. It wasn't an effect I had expected or had even thought about beforehand (I had just wanted to lose weight - and I'm far from obese). But for the first time in a while I was at least was waking up without feeling tired. Since then, I've been working on a more keto diet (the first time I"ve tried a "diet" in my life (I'm 55)) and my sleep has continued to improve, - not as much as I would like (I'm nostaglic for what I remember of my sleep as a kid) but still a noticably better.
      One thing about a keto diet is that it incidentally eliminates most, if not all, processed foods - which, according to Lustig, may be the primary cause of these types of issues - although I suspect that other type of diets (vegetarian, vegan, paleo) would also incidentally eliminate processed foods ( the modestly of N = 1). So I'm agnostic on whether my diet is best for all.
      Anyways, I wanted to respond to your post because i was struck by your comment about feeling "boned," having tried all the usual medications, and other remedies, but without any real long term improvement, and had ultimately kind of given up - resigning myself to the idea that's just what my life is going to be like. - and now feel a glimmer of hope for a longer term solution.
      Don't know if this might help you; but it might be worth a try.
      Signed - Someone working on similar issues

      @@matthewacuren It's funny you bring that up. I dove into this rabbit hole about ten months ago. I started keto and then moved to carnivore. Through the whole process, I've seen improvements is basically everything *except* for my sleep.
      I do mostly 16:8 intermittent fasting, but I also did a 36 hour fast last month. That drove my stress levels too high though, making my sleep worse for that night. I've been considering a slightly longer fast for the autophagy benefits, but I only have like 12% body fat, so I don't have much breathing room there.
      I appreciate the input, though. I like to think I'm on the right track; it just feels like I've tried everything and nothing works.

But perhaps, given your body lipid ratio '(I'm jealous cuz I'm sure I have a (much) higher body fat pourcentage than thou) it might be worth trying a fasting mimic diet (just fat, but still somewhat calorie resticted). Just an idea.

    He is definitively right .. but there is one danger!!
    I went on a strictly no-carb diet - and it worked: HbA1c went down from many years of 10.0 (which is astronomically high) in 6 months to 4.7 (which is really healthy low) - without insulin or any drugs (like metformin). Just simply no-carb plus exercise plus reduction of social and emotional stress,
    So the diabetes has been defeated - but I developed a severe Macular Degeneration (AMD) !
    The reason (I found out): retina cellls live only on glucose, they cannnot live on fat (just like cancer cells, some immune cells and red blood cells) ! So the reitina needs a bit of glucose.
    Therefore I recently changed my diet: I still do not eat "industrial" sugar and "processed" (gronnded/powdered) starch, but I do eat a few (!!!) sugar in "natural" form together with it's fiber: bananas, apricots, apples (all organic and not many) - and the AMD symptoms go away slowly (very slowly).
    Sugar (if it is naturally and constricted!) is not the enemy: processed food is the enemy!!!
    Thank You for Your work, Dr. Lustig!

    • @claybutler
      @claybutler 4 роки тому +14

      Actually, I just looked it up and your retina can also use free fatty acids for fuel and of course through neoglucogenesis your body will produce all the glucose that needs. That's why on a zero carb diet your brain doesn't die. It uses ketones plus glucose that your body makes. So unless you have a defective neogluconeogenesis issue, it may have been coincidental.

    One thing to push back on, he says that people on low-income can only afford processed foods; check the nutrition and cost of dried legumes and rice. It is clearly the cheapest and a good "back-bone" for any diet. Processed foods are very expensive relative to the two I mentioned. But, of course, the processed foods have the perfect amounts of salt, sugar, and seasoning so they taste amazing (Lay's BBQ chips anyone? lol),

      Patrick Potter The iron in legumes is non-heme and therefore not very bioavailable. Rely on non-heme iron as your main iron source and you’ll end up anaemic before long. Legumes also contain toxic oxalates that can’t be cooked out, along with other anti-nutrients. White rice is devoid of any nutrients. It is basically just carbohydrate with a very high glycemic index, causing or contributing to metabolic disease and disorder. Brown rice, while containing some nutrients, is very high in oxalates.

      If you mean "chubby" then yes. He's the very largest of all the great doctors that I now admire and support. They are the ones trying to get this world OFF processed foods and sugar. I've been off for 5 years nearly. I don' t know if Robert understands how this affects his image as a nutritionally astute doctor. I like my BMI under 23, it's where longevity is the very highest-and is where plant eating got me without any trouble whatsoever.

    might have been interesting but, as Lustig floridly exhibits Trump/Brexit derangement syndrome in the first few seconds, I certainly wont be taking advice on a healthy brain from him

      I heard that..but his information is vital..He admitted that Obama care was a failure..He generally believes that the health care costs will come down if we follow his advice and eat less..eat well and carefully..and exercise..He is correct!
      I still want Trump to win re-election..AND consider Dr.Lustig's admonitions vital regardless of his
      political opinion!

    Your delivery is terrible - as part and parcel of the pharmacological system for a number of years, the tone ought to be different. Also, the error of scientism comes up a lot. Further, your handling of the term ‘carbohydrate’ is bound to mislead. The greatest revelation that has gradually unfolded in the past 30 years is the value and ethical ramifications of plant nutrition vis-à-vis the toxicity and resultant suffering of meat, fish and dairy.

    • @thermobaricflatulence523
      @thermobaricflatulence523 4 роки тому +1

      Plant nutrition is incomplete and inefficient nutrition. Also, it's just as rife (if not more) with toxins as the "awful" meat the vegan propagandists will have us all believe. Heavy metals, mycotoxins, a plethora of alkaloids, lectins, oxalic acid, etc etc. It's absolute madness to make this simplistic distinction that somehow all plant food is completely safe. And by the way; What a conveniently large (virtually all-encompassing) food category to choose from and claim all for yourself!

      @@rumproast5159 I agree. Whether his political statements were made as part of a cynical ploy, in order to keep his position at the University, or whether they actually reflect his beliefs, those remarks illustrate the reason why people in Montana, Oregon, Texas, Utah, and Washington State, DO NOT WANT CALIFORNIANS (who are moving to those states in droves, fleeing the mess created by Californians' insane political beliefs).
