I didn't mention this a few weeks ago, but Rousseau is now over 2 years old!! It's amazing to think how far we've come as a community in that time. I still remember those few weeks before uploading the first video that were filled with a ton of recording. I have not mentioned this before, but the original Clair de lune recording was actually the first video I created, essentially a sight-read test to experiment with video effects. I'll be honest, I was not expecting more than a few thousand views, and as of right now it has now been viewed over 19 million times. That is truly hard to comprehend. Now during lock down, reminiscing on those days, I decided it would be nice to spend a bit more time working on the piece, and remake the video in the 2020 style! I'm sure you'll agree, many things have been refined over those two years - one of the biggest things that stuck out to me was the velocity curves of the piano library being set too strong on the first video, making the recording sound like it's being played at f throughout, along with the color which quite a few people mentioned. I hope this one can be a fresh new take on the piece in this visualization style, that can please both the ears and the eyes :) Wishing you all a happy and healthy Monday, and two weeks ahead ♥
During these tough times I decided to revisit this incredible piece, and make something special for you. Have you been revisiting any pieces you played in the past lately? Or have you been learning something new?
what i love about how rouseeau performed this piece is the lengthy pauses near the end. in those moments, even though the chords are in a major key and sound hopeful, you can hear their sadness. in the quiet moments between the chords you get overflown with such emotion, the sadness and dismay Debussy felt while composing this piece.
It's wonderful you picked up on that nuance as well, Debussy once said that "music is the space between notes" and I think your comment describes this perfectly.
I have played piano for 19 years and this is one of my favorite pieces to play. My father told me this was one of his favorite pieces and I remember just practicing it one day and he gave me $50. He passed away a year ago and he asked me to play this at his funeral and I did. I pray that every time I play it that he can hear it. RIP Dad
At age 16 my grandmother passed away and before she did she asked that i performed her favourite Piece of music. I practiced so much. I have never cried so much because she showed me how much music can really be affected by the human emotions as i listened to it play at her funeral. From then i always remembered that feeling. Rest in peace grandma
People talking about how he has done the same piece twice now. But this performance is magnatudes better than his last perfermance. I wasnt a fan of his first but this one is exceptional. Thanks Rousseau
Gotta agree for sure, this recording is load more expressive and delicate. More in line with how I like it. I admire Rousseau for taking another crack at it, shows he is very self-reflective and willing to improve not just technique but interpretation. Good practice for any artist.
2:16 No matter who the pianist is, beginner, amateur, or advanced. This part always gives me the chills, it always makes me close my eyes and erase everything that I am thinking about. This part will always give me goosebumps till the end of my life.
This was my grandmothers favourite piece she was a pianist a long time ago, she recently passed away from COVID-19, this song shall always make me remember her.
Imagine Claude Debussy Creating that Piece on his house with a grand piano in front of a big window looking at the Eiffel Tower on a Cold December Night and on the sky a beautiful Full Moon
this was the last piece that was played at my best friends funeral. He was only 10 and he died to cancer. I will never forget this piece, I remember it too well. It’s such a beautiful piece and it sticks into me so well. I will also never forget my cousin and how he was so different to everyone else, he would always get into every conversation and make everyone laugh and smile. I’m gonna miss you Charlie.
This piece is just something else. The feeling it evokes, is indescribable. Ethereal, beautiful and pure emotion. Heard it a hundred times and still not tired of it. Some pieces are just......Timeless.
This is exactly how i feel looking at the moon. its the closest proof that we are just sitting on a rock floating through space and time. Surreal and Beautiful at the same time
My grandpa died a couple years ago and when I was driving with my brother and now sister-in-law from the church where we held the funeral to the burial site, this piece started playing in the car. When I heard it, I knew it sounded pretty, but it was so much more than that. This piece really sparked something inside of me, so with my grandma’s help (who’s married to the grandparent that died), I learned Clair de Lune. What I came to realize is that the song is, in a way, representative of a lifetime, whereas in the birth of the piece there are simple, fundamental chords that lay out the trajectory for the rest of the piece. Then the piece goes through puberty and flowers into a fulfillment of its true potential with beautiful and complex chord progressions. The piece then nears its end as it grows old and reflects on life, where it combines the original chords from the beginning of the piece with some chord progressions underneath. Then, the piece goes through a little more reflection and dies. What’s interesting is that I always thought that death was a terrible, morbid thing, yet in this piece, death is presumably bright and happy. I found that the reason death is actually portrayed as such a beautiful thing in this piece is because without death we’d always have tomorrow to do what’s important, to grow our relationships, to involve ourselves in a rich and meaningful life. But someday there won’t be a tomorrow, so we need to do what’s important now. I finally found peace in the eternal rest of my grandfather, for, just as the light of the moon is the greatness that can be found in the death of the day, all of the great things I can love about not only my grandpa but all of this universe is found through the inevitable end to our lives. Thanks, Debussy, for showing me that death is just as necessary as it is beautiful. I've already commented this on one of Charles Cornell's videos but I figured I may as well share it here too. Also I changed everywhere that I wrote "song" to "piece." You're welcome.
Wow. That touched my Heart. Thank you for sharing These beautiful sentences! I whish you and all of you the best in the World. God bless you all! I'm speechless. Thank you so much for sharing your Emotions.
This song is the first thing I ever learned to play on the piano...my father taught me..I was 7 years old and am now 73 and still play it and think of my father every time, he passed in 1994. I have never taken a music lesson in my life, my father taught me all I know, he was a fantastic Pianist
To me, this piece illustrates an entire lifetime, notice how its birth and death are similar but not quite, like how an old self is in memory of the younger self, experiencing the similar but different emotions.
I have the hope that one day people, including me, will stop using words like "best", "worst", "ranking" when talking about music. It's almost like they missed the point.
TheAskald to be fair i just think that they are expressing their opinions that they think this one of the best pieces of music they have heard, although it is true that there are no true or best or worst piece in the world

I was a violin player in the new York Philharmonic for 20 years. I loved this little butifull piece of music. I cried when I heard it for the first time. Thanks you all.
This majestic piece is the one that I played for my Grandpa last year because he loved it so much. He recently passed away, so now I play this piece to cope with my sadness. How the tables have turned.

This was my mother's favorite song she used to play it on the piano. But she's been gone for 30 years. Its so beautiful to listen to, but heart breaking at the same time
Hey, Rousseau! I think I speak for every pianist here when i say: Please show us how you practise and what you can suggest other people that are far below your level. That would not add more content to your channel, but also increase the value that you put out which would mean more subscribers, views etc. Hope you consider it :D. Like to make sure he sees this comment! 👍🏼
@@Hansiy couldn't have said it better. Juste want to add that it's also something to pratice, if you stop playing and listening to music for a time your ability to hear every note becomes less precise. Your brain really needs to have the notes as habits.
This song feels like someone remembering the good times in their life, both happy they had such experiences, but sad that they've come and gone. Bittersweet reflection on a full life.
I'm exactly half way. Don't give up! I was really overwhelmed by the super fast runs and difficult fingerings but with slow, persistent practice over many months, I can play it much like he is playing it in the video and I'm boggling my own mind. This song is absolutely worth the struggle of learning. Thank you for this video, it's really helped me clarify many hard parts of the song on sheet music and your playing is just awesome.
@@saraicoreadiaz7567 I did it :) I can play the whole song, memorized, and it gives me SO MUCH HAPPINESS. It taught me tons of new skills. I feel like I'm finally "good" at piano. Good luck!! You can do it!
I remember first hearing this piece on the list of set pieces on my old e-piano. I loved listening to it at the time, but I never knew what it was called. For hours, I’d sit by the piano with my head on the keys like any other kid and sometimes fall asleep when it was late enough. My mom had sometimes walked in on me staring into the air with my ears open to it. Playing the first few notes, she had told me to play it to her when I had learnt it fully. When I tried learning from the beginning, I stumbled across Rousseau’s original performance on Clair de Lune and it was still always on repeat for me. Regardless of how impossible it felt to play, my infatuation with it fuelled my practice. That was 3 years ago. My mom passed away back in 2018 from breast cancer. I never learned the piece fast enough to play it to her. I’ve always regretted missing the last chance to see her in person at the airport, where she left for her final treatment abroad. Since her passing, I’ve put off learning the piece. I understand the “story of life”-like experience most people feel when listening to Clair de Lune. It is undoubtedly a beautiful piece, and one of my tied favourites, but it has many other different feelings attached with it. Sometimes it fills me with bliss and bittersweet release. Other times it’s deep regret and self-frustration. I haven’t heard it in quite a while though, and since I’ve put learning it off, I’ve lost almost half of my progress. I’m not sure how, but I’ll try redeeming it back. Maybe she could still hear it from up there.
How can someone compose something like this... and how can MAN develop the skills necessary to play it... is something that never ceased to amaze me...
I'm 70 and in my 7th year with the piano. Would that I had started a LOT sooner....but there ya have it. Been butchering this piece for the past few months. To say my progress has been plodding would be understating it. I would LOVE to able to play this and do it some kind of justice. That may never happen....but there's only way to find out, no? This guy knocks it out of the park. Fabulous rendition. Fabulous piece of music.
@@jo-an9079 Oh it's from a game called Danganronpa V3. It's part of the Danganronpa game/anime series and I will just say the reference is sad, very sad.
Same here, mate. Whenever you heard this song in the TEW games, you knew you were safe for a minute. Well... actually, you knew there was a 50/50 chance that there was going to be a terrifying boss battle ahead (for a first-time player, at least) and that you'd better just spend some green gel, cash in any keys, and save your game before moving on because there was no telling when you'd be able to again. I've just wrapped up the TEW2 in the wee hours of this morning. While I think both games are excellent, I swear, I'm starting to notice an unfortunate trend in horror games. Take Dead Space 1 and 2, for example (we don't talk about DS3 ever). The first DS game was pure horror with less focus on the underlying mechanics. DS2 improved on the gamplay mechanics but seemed to lose some of the first game's horror identity as it moved towards a more action-y style. The same thing with TEW, it seems. The second game was ridiculously easy even on Nightmare, although, I did appreciate the Void-like environmental design over that of the first game. (Void = Dishonored reference, floating "islands" in the sky, things frozen in time and space, etc.) Still, I love them all (Except DS3. We don't talk about that one).
Classical music concerts provide a unique opportunity to witness the magic of live orchestral performances. The sight and sound of a symphony orchestra in full flow is a truly unforgettable experience.
I’m learning this song for my grandmother. Her and I both love piano and this is by far her favourite piece. Every time we’re together we listen to it and I love to see how happy it makes her. I’m self taught and I haven’t gotten far, but I know I can’t give up. I want to make her smile while I can, and I want her to finally watch me play like she’s always wanted.
This piece isn't really that difficult. I decided to learn it after not playing piano for give or take 3 or 4 years. Granted it took me a year to the learn the piece. Still worth it though.

This is in my opinion the greatest piece of music ever composed. I know that’s high praise, and a million other songs could easily be awarded that title. But this song represents everything that is beautiful about the world. It feels like true comfort and serenity. It’s not soft all the way through, but even as it swells, it still feels comforting. It’s a song that I can sit down and just listen to, and let myself feel the rush of emotion go through me. It feels like being at one with the world around me. This piece feels like the world is singing a song, and we’re finally listening.
This is my favorite piano piece of all time. It's so beautiful, moving, and timeless. I listen to it every night before I drift off to sleep. My cousin took his life a few years ago and a pianist played this song at his funeral. RIP Michael Porath, you are missed by so many people! I want it played at my memorial as well.
This is one of only a few piano pieces I care for. And like you, I most certainly want it played at my memorial. Which I hope will be many years from now for both of us. Same here boys. Currently stuck at 2:20 because my left hand seizes to work as it demands. I’m trying this piece out only 10 months into teaching myself the piano. Maybe I’m trying to much for where I am in skill but hey, I made it this far!

I'm sitting in my toddlers bed with him as he falls asleep listening to such a delicate and beautifully played piece by such a talented pianist such as you Rousseau. Thank you
I'm projecting like a bitch but here's how it feels for me: 0:00 - two people meet each other and start talking. They're shy at first, but end up starting to fall in love with each other 0:42 - that love blossoms. Whenever they're together it's like nothing else matters. The world around them disappears and it's only them. Every second with each other is peaceful and perfect. Lazy sundays, cute dates, it's like a dream. 1:16 - a small bump in the road adds a bit of stress to the relationship. they start seeing parts of the other person they hadn't seen before and it worries one another. 2:02 - they smooth it out, and things go back to being harmonious again. Those red flags are still in the back of each of their heads, but they don't care, they've put a bandaid on it and they're happy with that person and that's what they want to focus on... 2:11 - ...right? 2:16 - life goes on, they're still together. They're out of the honeymoon phase but if someone were to ask if they were happy with one another they'd say "yeah of course". It's raining. As life goes on, more and more stresses are put on their relationship 2:40 - another minor issue that they fix with another bandaid. this pattern of finding problems and temporary fixes continues until 3:40 - they find themselves in the same place they met. except now those feelings they had are gone. they remember what it felt like. it's just different. It's not necessarily bad... just not magical anymore. 4:17 - they realize that they've illuminated how much they've grown apart by trying to be how they were. It's just not there anymore. The bandaids are coming off, but they keep trying anyways. At some parts it almost feels like how it was. There's small moments where they genuinely feel like it's going to work. 4:42 - but in the back of their heads they both know where this is headed, they're just putting it off because neither one wants to do it and neither one wants it. Life seems gray, the other person now evokes feelings of slight anxiety rather than the wondrous child-like joy they had before 5:00 - they're going through the motions. they watch one another fade away. the relationship is gone but the mutual love still remains. Right person, wrong time.
I think debussy is definetely one of those composers who can portray things in real life through music extremely well... i can just imagine a walk through the moonlight....
At 64 I've never listened to any classical music because it never made me feel anything. After hearing this piece I knew there are some things that can just change you in an instant.
As a piano player myself, I love most of Rousseau's work. However, his first cover of clair de lune seemed very dry and mechanical by comparison to most covers. It was technically impressive, but lacked emotion. This one is a huge improvement though! Also, his first cover was apparently a sight read. Let that sink in
mavi queen my preferred scenario: you wake up in the middle of the night on said mountain. You get out if your camping tent and sit down by your smouldering embers, brew a warm cup of tea and look up at a full moon and clear sky, covered with stars, with the company of nothing but some crickets in the distance
This is the song that made me want to start learning the piano. 2 years ago I heard this song, and now I practice nearly everyday, and I can finally say I suck a little less than when I started
This is the only piece I truly want to learn and am trying to. And it’s very nostalgic as my first concert we played it. And being a oboe player it made me have to understand it. And I hope it doesn’t come across as touting my own horn. But I truly love this song
I was inspired by this. I can finally play it. It was like impossible at the start. Believe in yourself. It is actually not hard once you get there. It took me less than 3 months. Just be persistent and keep practising over and over and over again. It is amazing once you are there. Don't give up!
I'm not sure why people think this song can be overplayed. It's timeless. I've been listening to this and many different versions of it and it brings me back to some happy memories. My love for classical music will never end
Back when i played piano, i wanted to learn this song so bad. It's one of my favorite classical pieces and i keep coming back to listen to it every now and then. As i also make orchestral music i thought i could practice my composing skills. I decided i would try to add an orchestra to it and practice on my automations to improve my realism on how my composition sounds. So i've now created a pretty good base orchestral addition to your cover of this piece. Your cover inspired me a lot and i'm very happy with how natural i've been able to make it sound so far! It has such a Disney movie feeling to it :)
You uploading this video has led to me rewatching the entirety of Your Lie in April. It reminded me of it and then I watched a scene on UA-cam and was like “yep rewatching it right now”. I cried like a baby last night for 30 minutes (if not more) as I finished the last episode and I’m tearing up right now just thinking about it. So thank you 💕 for the beauty of this performance and what it reminded me of.
I come back to this song every once in a while. This is one of my most favorite piano pieces of all time, and as such I've tried to find the best performance I can of this. As of writing, that still leads me here. You make the most out of every sequence you come across the entire time you're playing, and it's transformed this from a quiet, serene song to an entire scene that unfolds as the song progresses. No other pianist I've heard so far has managed to squeeze anywhere near as much emotion. Thank you for revisiting this. You certainly did manage to make something special.
this is my favorite song on piano, i love to listen to it every night when i go to bed and i always play your recording. it helps me fall asleep, i just thought i'd mention it and i would just like to say thank you for your ability to play piano and thank you again for putting on UA-cam so the whole world can listen.
I don't know why, but this always brought tears to my eyes. When my dog died, this song immediately came to my mind. And yet, I still love it, it's calm and somewhat nostalgic. Still miss this fella. But hey, it's all the good times that count.

The Evil Within introduced me to this masterpiece, then I started loving classical music as a genre
eehhh... This is classified as Modern... but okay.
You again
(Void = Dishonored reference, floating "islands" in the sky, things frozen in time and space, etc.)
Still, I love them all (Except DS3. We don't talk about that one).
Same for me also
Classical music concerts provide a unique opportunity to witness the magic of live orchestral performances. The sight and sound of a symphony orchestra in full flow is a truly unforgettable experience.
Love the softer tone of this version. Felt the first one was constantly played with the same strength with no dynamics. This one is beautiful.

I'm projecting like a bitch but here's how it feels for me:
0:00 - two people meet each other and start talking. They're shy at first, but end up starting to fall in love with each other
0:42 - that love blossoms.
As life goes on, more and more stresses are put on their relationship
2:40 - another minor issue that they fix with another bandaid. this pattern of finding problems and temporary fixes continues until
3:40 - they find themselves in the same place they met. except now those feelings they had are gone. they remember what it felt like. it's just different.
Life seems gray, the other person now evokes feelings of slight anxiety rather than the wondrous child-like joy they had before
5:00 - they're going through the motions. they watch one another fade away. the relationship is gone but the mutual love still remains. Right person, wrong time.

i like where there is a moon in the background since Clair de Lune is "Moonlight" in French, cmiiw :)
Doesn't it mean "clarity of the moon"?
@@GuyMichaely word by word "clair de lune" mean "light of moon" :)
Oui oui
Beethoven's Moonlight sonata is also known as "Sonate au clair de lune" in French.
I'm french and in "clair de lune", "clair" doesn't mean "clarity" but "light". If the title meant "clarity or moon", it would be "Clarté de la Lune"
Probably one of the greatest things ever composed especially 2:16
Indeed

Ah, 2 years of great music, thank you
I come back to this song every once in a while.
How can someone play so beautifully??
This is Clairely Lunetic😍

this is my favorite song on piano, i love to listen to it every night when i go to bed and i always play your recording. it helps me fall asleep, i just thought i'd mention it and i would just like to say thank you for your ability to play piano and thank you again for putting on UA-cam so the whole world can listen.
I don't know why, but this always brought tears to my eyes.
When my dog died, this song immediately came to my mind. And yet, I still love it, it's calm and somewhat nostalgic.
Still miss this fella. But hey, it's all the good times that count.
