    I think the best way to describe this would be Mount and Blade in space.

      Back when it was all in one starsystem and only Tritacyon, Hegemony, and Pirates :D

      ^ Even back when it was just a collection of missions. :D
      But damn did I spend a LOT of time in that singular star system... This truly must be the best "Early Access" type of a game I've ever played, hands down! Stable, had enough content in the version 0.2x already, super engaging and inventive gameplay and UI.
      I remember when I updated to the version in which they added the new star systems, trading and all that stuff. The first thing I noticed is that you don't see fleets anymore, that everything costed precious goods and the CR mechanic made combat much less viable than it used to be (well, it was the main focus in the earlier versions). At first, I immensely disliked the changed, as it wasn't as simple as I was used to, but it really did grow on me after giving it a serious try. Heck, this is the only game I know of that makes smuggling truly interesting without excessive convolution. It was great back when there was only combat, but somehow it just keeps getting better and better.

      The next patch looks like it's going to be amazing, what with colonization and such. Finally tying all the separate parts of the campaign into a unified whole.

    I would really recommend you get the nexerelin mod at least, enables you to capture stations, mine planets, and the factions really come to life with fighting and all that. It really makes the galaxy feel more lively and the game becomes even better than vanilla. Faction mods add content, but I wouldn't say they are as important as nexerelin.

    I bought this game back in 2012. I followed long time their progress and in some point it really looked like the development has been almost stopped and patches came out really slowly. I had forgotten this already. Thank you for reminding me! It looks really awesome nowdays.

      That is the early access effect. People forget the game or assume that this is all they get from it. Early access and alpha's are rarely equal in quality compared to finished products.
      Most companies that do early access, public alpha's and the new school open beta's shoot themself in the foot doing so.

    • @emossg
      @emossg 7 років тому

      Yeah, and once I have played game on alpha or whetever early access, I will rarely touch it ever again. First game which it happened was Minecraft. Played when you could only place cubes. Barely touched survival mode at all.

    If you hold Shift, the Ship follows your mouse so you can aim easier.

    • @arbiter787
      @arbiter787 7 років тому +1

      There is also an option to switch it so your ship always follows the mouse and holding shift disables mouse control. Mouse aim is something you always want to be using on frigates or ships with lots of frontal weapons hardpoints. Keyboard control is more useful for broadside ships or ones with lots of turrets.

      I've played a ton of Starsector and watched a ton of Space Rangers 2 gameplay, and while I like them both I feel like they're different enough some people might not enjoy both. Space Rangers is far far more on the arcade side of things, while Starsector has a more punishing, complex combat system and game world.

    Does the game have empire building. Can you conquer and control planets?

    • @arbiter787
      @arbiter787 7 років тому

      With a mod called Nexerelin you can capture planets and sort of lead your own faction. This stuff is likely planned for vanilla as well. However, I very highly doubt anything as detailed as a proper 4x game will ever make an appearance.

    Mount and Blade in space

    • @ValosarX
      @ValosarX 7 років тому

      Pav Mount and Blade without the mount and blade is not mount and blade. The only thing that is similar at all is the map. The combat, economy, difficulty, and meta campaign are totally different. You can customize your troops in Mount and blade you can use skills on the over world map to change you stealth or move faster, you don't have to worry about supplies nearly as much. Saying this is mount and blade is space does a disservice to both games. Starsector is more like Skyrim in space than Mount and Blade in space

    • @Paveldude
      @Paveldude 7 років тому +8

      Mount and Blade and Starsector are both open world games with RPG elements where you control one unit but can lead an army with RTS like commands in battle, you can join and fight for different factions, and the meta campaigns are similar as they both involve constantly building and strengthening your army/unit. I love both games and I only compared the two because I know that open minded fans of MB will enjoy Starsector and vice versa. Not a disservice to the games at all!! You're surely joking about Skyrim

      And decision based encounters like FTL

    • @arbiter787
      @arbiter787 7 років тому

      It is in fact none of those things at all. Trading is a diversion from the main focus of the game: combat. Ship building is actually ship refitting; just mounting weapons and specific customizations on a hull. Decision based encounters are not present at all. No encounters are random like in FTL, and every dialogue choice is more of a specific gameplay mechanic (run away, fight, talk) than a decision.

    Also, if you like this, you might wanna check out Rebel Galaxy, if you haven't. It's essentially the same thing in 3D, though somewhat more on the casual side. Bit older (2015) but shapes up amazingly well graphics wise if you invest a little time in messing around with Reshade 3.0.

  • @AlexVriairu

    I so wonder why all of a sudden in a timespan of 3 months we went from 1-2 of these games to a frikkin ton. I can not even count the space adventure, roguelite, exploration games. Top down and 3d........ it is insane. Did 20 developers had a meeting and all decided to make the same game with a few tweaks?
    Even on mobile you get slapped around the ears with these games. Rarely meeting the quality of "Out There: Omega Edition" which unfortunately is a 4$ game on Android or 9$ on Steam but a tip none the less.
    The gaming industry mysteriously does this every now and then. All of a sudden, out of left field flood a genre that barely saw new titles in ages. I wonder if they even realize this cuts their own fingers. The pot gets split by all these titles. Get in the media at the same time and having titles look so much alike is pretty much throwing your game against the wall of other titles trying to squeeze through a pinhole of interest. Release your game half a year later. Promote half a year later, develop half a year longer. This "let's all release at the same time" has not worked well since the early 80's. DoA most of the time but I hope this one makes it. Looks fun.

    • @jothamstickings4773
      @jothamstickings4773 7 років тому

      I think its more that this Space/ Combat/ Fleet games have been around for a while. The only real new one I know is Cosmoteer. What we're more likely seeing here is the bandwagon effect. One game of this genre (I don't know which one) became popular, so youtubers started looking for more games like it. This means that games that used to have very small fan bases have been made slightly more popular, so it looks like a ton of similar games have appeared out of nowhere at the same time.
      In my opinion this is a good thing. It means smaller developers, like the makers of Star Sector, get some attention paid to their game.

    • @DamienTTube
      @DamienTTube 7 років тому

      Just from the top of my head in the past say year and a half: FTL, AuroraRL, Cosmoteer, Crashlands, Starsector, Weird worlds Return to infinite space, ROKH, KSP, Ringrunner, Homeworld, Everspace, Space Panic, Space Pilgrim, Starship Theory, Elite Dangerous, Out there: Omega Edition.
      I can go on for a while. These are just the mainstream ones, if I dive into more obscure titles the list becomes larger and larger. For a genre that was nearly dead in 2013 this is insane imo.
      Just to make clear I didnt find out these games where in development through watching UA-cam. It is a trend that is noticable on every store front. And most of these games use the horrible "early access", it is unfinished but we will fix it overtime attitude.
      Which is btw a great way to destroy the sales potential of a game. But it worked for Minecraft so now they all do it. KSP is an example that got released but since it ran so long in early access barely anyone picked it up when finished........ This means that the potential buyers who now jumped in earlier never got to experience a finished product unless if they stuck with the game.
      KSP is amazing, but I feel would be a far greater success if they just released it in a finished state instead of letting people experience an unfinished and therefor less impressive product.
      I am glad the small good titles get a chance to shine. Specially seeing that Steam greenlight, kickstarter and lack of quality control on the steam storefront made finding gems more difficult.
      Without the Dentola studio's, Romine brothers, horrificly bad games that are dumped on the storefronts and cases like Alex Mauer etc these games would get by far more attention.

    • @jothamstickings4773
      @jothamstickings4773 7 років тому

      I totally agree. Early access is only a good idea if you want it to become popular as an incomplete free game then release a full version with loads more features, so more people will be willing to pay money for it because they already know it's good.

      DamienTTube lol the only thing these games are similar in is that they are in space. (Except crashlands that's on a planet I think so no idea why you put this there)

    • @DamienTTube
      @DamienTTube 7 років тому

      All are space games with rogue lite or rpg elements and at some level a survival or resource management integration (including funds / progression etc)
      I cluster them cause they are considered a genre or are in an adjacent genre field with enough overlap.
      If you have a better classification lemme know ^^
