"Wait, why didn't you just hit him, cause then he would've taken damage..." "No, he only takes one health from the artillery shot, so it wouldn't have killed him, he still would've attacked the building." "Would his attack been more damaging to the building than you bombing the building?" "Nah, it would've been the same." "So... why didn't you do the one that caused him damage?" ... ... "I dunno." Love it.
FTL's perfectly beatable... Some people get 90% wins on Captain's Edition, no less. You just have to be super ruthless in fights and maximise time in each sector to have a decent shot.
I have read a lengthy interview and the dev said they designed the game to be dependant in your skill not your luck. This decision is based on Ftl conplain about RNG god Here is the article it was featured in steam www.rockpapershotgun.com/2017/11/27/into-the-breach-preview-tactics/
I mean not exactly because if you are going at the speed of light time will literally dilate and move slower. So technically if you can time travel into the past you are going faster than light in a sense. But this completely breaks the laws of physics. ;-;
I'm really happy the dev's didn't go for the obvious FTL 2, and instead went for something familiar...but new! You guys did great showcasing this game, I can't wait to throw my money at this one.
I do wonder if there will be some kind of tie in to FTL, like maybe a "Using new technology, Humanity abandons Earth to take to the stars and find a new home". I think that would be enough for me, nothing too obvious and all that. But I'm also okay with it being fully independent though!
Even more amazing because we'd eat an FTL 2 up and it'd be pretty much guaranteed profit for them. Always gotta give props to any developer with the balls to try, well, ideas. Also props for a new AW-type, Wargroove is takin' too long and I could use a fix. But I digress.
Also, @MrBordertown what about FTL 1 doesn't feel like a mobile title in the first place? Try to hold out some hope for good game ideas, man. Garbage mobile titles pride themselves on paywalls and the illusion that you're doing anything to progress. Optimistically, this will be just a straight-up cool game with a reasonable progression system, that can stand on its own and won't need crutches to make money.
+MrBorderdown That's an interesting take, seeing that FTL originally was critiqued for playing and looking like a shitty mobile game by those who hadn't tired it
This looks amazing, I foresee playing a TON of this when it initially comes out on PC, and then playing a ton of it AGAIN when they eventually put out a Switch port...
I saw the alert that this video went up on my phone and without opening the video went to steam to buy it.... but in true subset fashion, it is "ready when they feel it's ready". IT LOOKS READY TO ME! LEMME PLAY PLEASE! Bah I'll just play more FTL.
6:19 Here's the real answer: Walker punches bug that's not webbing it. End turn. (The water will come in and kill the webbing bug before it attacks anyway, although the artillery can go 3 spaces back and shoot the bug to push the walker away.) Or you can get fancy: Move the artillery 3 spaces back from the walker. The walker punches the bug that's webbing it. Artillery fires on the webbing bug, killing it and pushing the walker out of the line of fire of the flying bug. The tank moves in and shoots the flying bug. End turn. The flying bug dies to fire damage.
There was a DOS strat game in the 90s where you played as a general for a klingon like race, and each random mission you had to invade and take a planet. You had to choose how much you would invest in forces, and what type of forces - then take VP spots on the planet to win - fighting against all levels of tech. It was awesome, and looks very similar to this. I have no idea what that game was called tho.....
same here! I was so excited for like 1 second ;) But I guess it would be kinda hard to do, they would have to change a lot on the UI in oder to work on smaller screens.
David Aerne it's one of those games where I know it wouldn't work super well, but I'd be willing to compromise just to be able to play on my phone. Have you played Halcyon6? That game doesn't really work perfectly but it works well enough that I'm happy I get to play it on my phone.
Wow I want to play this game so I rushed to steam store (during the video so I didn't hear it is not finished) and see that "available: when it is finished" and I was pleased because we'll get a full game not another early access! :)
I am glad to see this and it looks very nice! But at the same time I was really hoping for FTL 2! Maybe they will make FTL 2 after they are done with this? I would love to see an FTL Space Sim mix game! (Not that FTL 2 would be anything like that.)
18:00 NOOOOOOoooooooo! Heinlein wrote the original book, which does NOT have the insane-military-dystopia tone that the movie does. The movie intentionally had the opposite attitude of the novel.
I just want FTL on the Switch. I have spent close to 2000 hours on that game and love it. I will gladly buy both games, but I really want FTL with me on my favourite system!
I thought the Firefly had adorable eyes and its tongue out like a dog but it was just the art's shading and background lmao. xD They look cool tho! (I'm a fan of Starcraft's Zerg race so I love some aliens :3) Gah, I can't wait for this game! D:
"It's like Iowa, nobody lives there." Hey! Iowa has plenty of people. We have the same population as Uruguay - and that's a sovereign country. If you're going to push Kaiju into nowhere, pick Nebraska instead. Nobody will miss that.

I hope they also bring it to the Switch and iOS. I need more strategy games on the go.
I see a squad based tactical strategy on a isometric grid, you level up your squad members and is seems that between the missions there's a meta-game where you... let me guess, you need to make decisions that will affect the story progress, access to resources, what mission get you play next and ultimately determines if you'll be able to defeat the super difficult final mission to win the game?
Looks like Overland. I'm sad. I wanted FTL style game, but with RPG progression style, with proper trading and openworld universe. That would be awesome. Like 2D Elite. With FTL style ship management - that would be awesome.
Here is a radical idea... how about you script the video, record a bunch of footage while you play it for review and then use said footage to highlight good examples of the gameplay, instead of fumbling through this, because you don't want to waste more than 20 minutes on doing your job.
I'm not really feeling this ever since I heard about it (a year ago?). It looks like a pretty good game, but for some reason not something as appealing to me. I should still probably try it though, and that might get me to like it. Personally I would have loved an FTL 2, but not everyone would necessarily want that.
"Wait, why didn't you just hit him, cause then he would've taken damage..."
"No, he only takes one health from the artillery shot, so it wouldn't have killed him, he still would've attacked the building."

"I dunno."
Love it.
One hit kills only run
This is usually why I have a co-commander when I'm playing games like this.
Also, can we talk about how the whole time he could've just aimed one tile NW to knock the thing off-target? Simply amazing. xD
“From the FTL devs comes-“
Say no more fam
*throws money*
Hopefully they make the game beatable and less dependent on random chance in the endgame.
FTL's perfectly beatable... Some people get 90% wins on Captain's Edition, no less. You just have to be super ruthless in fights and maximise time in each sector to have a decent shot.
You must really suck at FTL.
I have read a lengthy interview and the dev said they designed the game to be dependant in your skill not your luck. This decision is based on Ftl conplain about RNG god

Can I just confirm that this game is slower than light?
Why would they downgrade? ;)
It's a double pun. Seems serious to me.
Boooooooo
I mean not exactly because if you are going at the speed of light time will literally dilate and move slower. So technically if you can time travel into the past you are going faster than light in a sense. But this completely breaks the laws of physics. ;-;
i was upset when i realized i couldn't buy this now.
Hey wassup this is someone reminding you that you can buy it for switch and pc.
I'm really happy the dev's didn't go for the obvious FTL 2, and instead went for something familiar...but new! You guys did great showcasing this game, I can't wait to throw my money at this one.

it's not even done yet MrBorderdown...
and...
most definitely note fine tuned yet...
Even more amazing because we'd eat an FTL 2 up and it'd be pretty much guaranteed profit for them.
Always gotta give props to any developer with the balls to try, well, ideas.

man can't believe the entire population of iowa disliked this video
Tim Lesher Iowa resident here. Three of us love it.
Getting some Advance Wars vibes. Looks good.
You should check out Rebel Star for GBA. It's an amazing game very similar to Advance Wars and XCOM
Not even one human turned into a plant tho its not the same
both are classics
"Yes, the Sixth Sense, where they hated water."
polymorph ine Signs?
Please put this on the switch devs
came here to say this. I'll buy this game day 1 but only on switch :)
These devs are so awesome I will buy this game multiple times. I'll buy the soundtrack too because Ben Prunty is one of the best composers right now.
The FTL music in the end got me in the feels, man.
The art style is so great
"I'm getting a little political here."
Wow, who would have thought that POLYGON would get political? Absolutely gobsmacked.
This looks amazing, I foresee playing a TON of this when it initially comes out on PC, and then playing a ton of it AGAIN when they eventually put out a Switch port...
I just wish they had a release date. Looks sweet
Late February!
I saw the alert that this video went up on my phone and without opening the video went to steam to buy it.... but in true subset fashion, it is "ready when they feel it's ready". IT LOOKS READY TO ME! LEMME PLAY PLEASE! Bah I'll just play more FTL.
Just take my money, please!
Oh man, I can't wait for this game. I loved FTL soooo much.
Oooh this looks like my jam !

This is awesome! Reminds me of Front Mission on the SNES
This looks so great!

I’m hyped ! I think FTL was only on the iPad not iPhone unfortunately (mentioned around 19m50)
This is correct
Yeah that was disappointing. I thought it had dropped for iPhone without me realising and now I am sad.
same here! I was so excited for like 1 second ;) But I guess it would be kinda hard to do, they would have to change a lot on the UI in oder to work on smaller screens.

This looks awesome. I love tactical games.
So it's Front Mission. I like it
Looks like Spybot meets FrontMission, exciting!
This looks fucking AWESOME!!! Wow!! These Dev's are really, REALLY good.
It looks great. Cant wait to try it out
That FTL music at the end... it will forever trigger a happy place in my brain xD
RUSS THANK YOU
Man that Sokoban shoutout gave me a nostalgia whiplash.
have no idea wtf this game is yet, but i'm pumped knowing it comes out next week
Wow I want to play this game so I rushed to steam store (during the video so I didn't hear it is not finished) and see that "available: when it is finished" and I was pleased because we'll get a full game not another early access! :)
i have played FTL for a total of 1234 Hours this game´s got some reeeeally big footsteps to follow in
As a resident of Iowa I can confirm. No one lives here.
I do
very nice, cant wait to get this
I'm excited =) - Now on my steam wishlist ;)
5:23 Wrap me up in some kaju blankets!
Only thing that's missing is the over-the-top animation when you execute an attack a la Super Robot Wars / Advanced Wars :D
4:40 Actually, the Shyamalan movie where they did not like water is "Signals" not the "Sixth Sense"
LordOfRage Signs?
Ups yeah. I meant "Signs" not "Signals". My bad
whoa this looks amazing!!!!
Really looks like it'd be a fun Switch title, though I'd buy it on Steam regardless.
Look up Metal Marines for SNES! Good times :)
As an Iowan, I should correct you on the 'nobody lives there' comments. It's more accurate to say that 'nobody WANTS to live there'.
I am glad to see this and it looks very nice! But at the same time I was really hoping for FTL 2! Maybe they will make FTL 2 after they are done with this? I would love to see an FTL Space Sim mix game! (Not that FTL 2 would be anything like that.)
TAKE. MY. MONEY. NOW.
Fantastic game.. Small Story but nice details, fantastic Turn based gameplay.. Amazing..
My ears perked when you said from the makers of ftl
This kinda reminds me of Monsterpocalypse (in a good way)
Day 1. Day 0. If I were a good time traveler I'd have bought it already.
Crush, Crumble, and Chomp. amiright?
looks awesome
18:00 NOOOOOOoooooooo! Heinlein wrote the original book, which
does NOT have the insane-military-dystopia tone that the movie does.
The movie intentionally had the opposite attitude of the novel.
i want to test it
ill write 2000 words of honest Feedback as reward
I just realized that the FTL music could fit into this game and not feel very out of place.
I hope they make this available for phones and not just PC.
When can I get this glorious looking game?
I just want FTL on the Switch. I have spent close to 2000 hours on that game and love it. I will gladly buy both games, but I really want FTL with me on my favourite system!
What is the second game he is mentioning at 1:08 " People who likes and FTL and...."
von Steynberg Fire Emblem
ty
2:44 ouch. I live in Iowa.
As of the 1m08s mark... SHUT UP AND TAKE. MY. MONEY!
Like FTL is this going to be on IOS and many platforms?
So, this is Pacific Rim, the video game?
I thought the Firefly had adorable eyes and its tongue out like a dog but it was just the art's shading and background lmao. xD
They look cool tho! (I'm a fan of Starcraft's Zerg race so I love some aliens :3)
Gah, I can't wait for this game! D:
original starcraft zerg looked much better though imo. not graphically of course but aesthethically .
better or not, i like them both :D
"It's like Iowa, nobody lives there."
Hey! Iowa has plenty of people. We have the same population as Uruguay - and that's a sovereign country. If you're going to push Kaiju into nowhere, pick Nebraska instead. Nobody will miss that.
I hope they also bring it to the Switch and iOS. I need more strategy games on the go.
Looks really cool!
Russ hates Iowa and Russ hates me. Disappointed
I'm getting serious Front Mission vibes
Ok great, when do I get to give them my money?
:)
HEY CHRIS PLANTE
Ok, I watched your video, now start selling your game!
hopefully soon :D
Is anyone immediately reminded of Front Mission??
Movie was SIGNS.
They were joking.
I think it's to much loss in second mission
Yep, it was ruined.
Reminds me of Godzilla 2 on the NES.
Ok. FTL is awesome. Pacific Rim is beyond awesome. This game looks good.
Want. Definitely much want.
So...It's xcom but it takes up less computer space?
If thats your line of thinking then you probably want to take a look at xenonauts
The only two things in common I see are aliens and turn based strategy. Care to elaborate?
I see a squad based tactical strategy on a isometric grid, you level up your squad members and is seems that between the missions there's a meta-game where you... let me guess, you need to make decisions that will affect the story progress, access to resources, what mission get you play next and ultimately determines if you'll be able to defeat the super difficult final mission to win the game?
Looks like Faselei!
Looks like Overland. I'm sad. I wanted FTL style game, but with RPG progression style, with proper trading and openworld universe. That would be awesome. Like 2D Elite. With FTL style ship management - that would be awesome.
i love fire emblem but whats ftl?
Here is a radical idea... how about you script the video, record a bunch of footage while you play it for review and then use said footage to highlight good examples of the gameplay, instead of fumbling through this, because you don't want to waste more than 20 minutes on doing your job.
Well. Dozens of hours in FTL. Sure buy for me.
I heard FTL and came so fast, but enough about my sex life.
WANT!
I'm not really feeling this ever since I heard about it (a year ago?). It looks like a pretty good game, but for some reason not something as appealing to me. I should still probably try it though, and that might get me to like it.
Personally I would have loved an FTL 2, but not everyone would necessarily want that.
Would of been nice if the units would turn to the their target, otherwise it looks kinda funky.
Toast.
Looks like a very polished iOS game
Take my money.
Shut up and take my money!
FTL on Switch, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Controls could be a tad awkward, but it seems like a nice fit.
Doesn't the switch have a touchscreen? It could use that, if not, im sure they could find a way.
BowlUndrFire
The switch has so many buttons, I think it would work
You don't need any other game besides skyrim on switch, enough hours to play till the end of this generation.
.... how possibly is it not already?
Switch port? :)
I want this on my mobile
Looks sweet.
Game reminds me of starship troopers
Front Mission. You forgot about Front Mission.
I did too. Damn, what a great series. And the mecha+perspective does remind me of that, when I think about it now.
Sorry to say, but this feels a bit like a bad attempt at aping giant bomb's quicklook format
I tihnk what we all wanted was a sandbox version of ftl with a bigger scope, this does look interesting though
