I went plant based for my health in the earlier part of this year. My husband is on a eat whatever he wants diet. He understands that everything in the house will be things that both of us can eat-besides obvious things like sardines- and he has enjoyed learning all about vegan flavors and trying this with me. He eats plant based around 70% of the time, and is a big advocate for it. It's a balance and I love to hear other people taking the same approach or understanding of it.

Hi Merle!! I’ve been wanting to go vegan for years, super invested in learning about all things veganism. I have felt pressured to kind of go all in instead gradually. Even though some people say to do it slowly. I really feel like something in me will finally click to go vegan since I’ve been wanting to do it from my heart for so long. Love these tips!
I absolutely love this video and I would love some videos for beginners, maybe for people who don't know how to cook or are just beginning to venture into making their own meals as well.
Couldn't agree more with #11. Sometimes you miss something on a label or sometimes you get offered food from someone you thought knew better. These things can happen, and nobody should demonize making mistakes. I started pretty much cold turkey, but didn't eat much meat or dairy before I started being vegan, so I don't think I can fairly comment on how difficult of a change it is, but I've learned to make so many meals that I love and if I can't make it myself, there's usually a plant-based replacement that can serve well enough (except chocolate, haven't found one I like yet). Also +1 for the frozen chicken nuggets and such, probably not the best to eat them exclusively all week (been there), but for those days that just aren't it, they are perfect.
Based on what you mentioned in this video you should do vegan/vegetarian 101 series. (Sort of like what Tasty has) Ep 1. Pantry must haves! Ep 2. Easy snacks recipes Eps 3. Delicious beginner home cook meal! ETC.
I love your recommendation for starting small. I have ARFID so eating is tough in general, and there are a lot of vegan staples I can't eat (such as beans). Plus I'm a diabetic, so protein is a huge thing needed in my diet. But small steps like replacing a few meals rather than my whole diet is something I know I can do without getting discouraged! I love your channel, and I appreciate how you take a no judgement approach to food 💗
My bf also has ARFID so he can’t go fully vegan. Don’t beat yourself up over it- you’re doing what you can! That’s better than most of the population! Ultimately your health is most important ❤
@@11235Aodh idk if it's for all diabetics, but for me I've noticed a correlation in avoiding lows and highs when I focus more on protein, even when it's alongside carbs
@@11235Aodh yeah and see for me, certain fats (particularly ones from animal products) help keep me stable too! I've been trying to find non animal alternatives, avocados really help!
I went ahead and joined the discord server, will be checking and participating from time to time :) I suppose I'm about 1/3 of the journey there, been mostly ovo-lacto vegetarian since January, and I've been experimenting with vegan food for a few years now. I don't feel like I need any meat, I only cheat with takeout and restaurant options as there isn't all that many plant based options around here yet (only big cities like Lisbon). I love cooking and trying out new things, but living with family and exhausting routines often drain motivation to go the extra mile - they might not like a lot of things, and I'm not that good at planning ahead on a day to day basis. I've been watching some channels like yours for a couple years now, it's really inspiring to have people share their love for food, rather than say what one should or shouldn't do :D also, thanks for the last bit - we're all human, we do what I can, there shouldn't be any elitism regarding any lifestyle, just living happy however we can. Cheers !
Thank you for doing this video, and thanks for the last tip. As a person with ED tendencies, I don't want to "restrict" food (this is what you do when you're going vegan, though you have these fantastic dishes it takes time to adapt to them); because it messes with all the recovery journey I've made, so personally, I'm going with the flow. If someday I want to eat a bit of smoked salmon? I'll do it, because (at least for me), if I don't eat the things I really want or crave, I end up not eating at all!! wishing all of you battling with ED a smooth recovery, I'm starting to see veganism as more of an ally to overcoming my ED 🥰🥰 Quick meals would be a splendid idea, because most of the time I'm too tired for cooking. Maybe touching the topic of mental health regarding veganism? Love the vid and the energy of your channel !!💜💜
For me with eating vegan i have to restrict much less, i can just eat all that i want and don't have to worry about portion control. I eat whole foods plant based low fat and salt though.
I know for me that the restriction element is one very big reason I am fairly uncertain about veganism for me. My ED was caused by years of dieting and restriction. Even thinking about restriction or changing diet can be triggering for me.
@@11235Aodh Restriction is not just about portion size. For me the issue would be the act of restricting certain foods rather than being related to portion size.
@@0roseable I understand, the beauty of eating starches, fruit and vegetables is that you don't have to restrict anything out of these groups and you can eat till satiated. This is with a healthy microbiome though, certain starches or vegetables can still cause issues for certain people.
Okay, this is hands down the best video I've ever watched, no joke. I love how open minded you are with veganism. There are so many great tips on veganism here. I loved this video!
Thanks for the tips Merle, I am learning on how to become Vegan but not there yet. I love you light personality and I have been watching your vegan cooking videos. Keep making good content like this.
I organize proteins by the speed/effort required to make them. Regular beans are the slowest, need to be soaked overnight and cooked for 30-40 min. Lentils don't need to be soaked but need to be cooked 30-40 min. And tofu is the fastest, needing no soaking or cooking. So when I don't feel like cooking I'll cook with tofu. It's a great ingredient for making healthy meals fast. To me it just tastes like egg whites.
Can we also talk about vegans dragging vegetarians/acting like vegetarians are the devil? 1.) a lot of vegetarians transition to veganism eventually, and 2.) harm reduction is a thing.
This was great. I would say that a well-stocked pantry is really important to make this way of eating work, so that might make for a good video. It took me a long time to appreciate tofu - still don't like it straight up, but have found freezing it first and then marinating it or boiling it in a marinade really made a difference flavor-wise for me. I do enjoy cooking, so that has been helpful - experimenting in the kitchen is my jam and one reason why I love your vlog. Judging people is definitely NOT my jam, so another reason you are one of my favorites.
I really struggle with making these big changes, even though I would like to. I have stopped buying fresh meat (most of the time) and have started buying things from the "buy before waste" aisle instead. You know, the stuff that's about to go off. And that's been working for me. Fully switching over to veganism or even just vegetarianism is really tough for me, though, because I have really strongly ingrained habits and food preferences and texture issues and breaking out of them is just really, really difficult. I morally know it's the right thing to do but mentally it's just so hard. And yes, that's a very long winded way of saying autism makes my brain want certain foods significantly more than others. It's something I'll probably be working on for the next decade, honestly. I'm already happy I managed to get some new veggie and vegan recipes into my repertoire, though, and I do at least try to get my food from local regions (which seems to be easier here in Switzerland (PS, veganism is still very new here and difficult to order for in restaurants (PPS my favourite restaurant actually was this incredible vegan place that did burgers and it was shut down and replaced by a disappointing steakhouse. That's neither here nor there but I am always sad about it))) Anyway, long story short, I'm trying and it's hard.
Don't feel guilty over that. It's a process, and yourself decide what you're comfortable with and how far you want to go. Take it at your own pace, and don't feel bad if you don't go as far as some others.
You're doing absolutely great! Every little step makes a difference and you should be able to take all the time you need. Being vegan is not for everyone like Merle said, but even making these small changes definitely help.
Thank you for the excellent guidance, Merle! My partner is allergic to almost all legumes and some nuts, which is such a cornerstone of vegan recipes. He can have tofu and soybeans, though! A 'Tofu 101' would be fantastic!!
I really like how you said you don't have to enjoy mock meats. Some people totally love and need them and some people don't! I myself can't eat anything like beyond meat because it resembles red meat too much and honestly it disgusts me. In my country there are some plant-based options for meat that aren't trying to be mock meat per say, like they're usually made from beans and peas and they're super delicious options!
7:23 That's a good topic. The research is hit or miss as far as plant based saturated fats increasing cholesterol like animal saturated fats do, but the research is also hit or miss as far as dietary cholesterol raising blood cholesterol.
I love your attitude about veganism. Great video! I'm going on 8 years without any animal flesh, but occasionally have cheese or ice cream. I always prefer vegan alternatives but sometimes they're not easily available when I have a craving. I found by totally being a nazi about it made my life much more stressful. I would love to see the world go vegan though.
After almost 3 years of eating exclusively plant-based I gave up on account of being overwhelmed and worried about my newborn’s future/nutritional and social needs. Funnily enough, I honestly forgot how to cook animals, so we will probably keep it plant-based at home while not restricting ourselves when out and about. And that’s okay. Thank you for the 100 vs 4 argument, I could not agree more.
The only issue I have with the health benefits of vegan diet is that coconut oil is used in so many recipes and processed foods, and coconut oil is so high in saturated fat which does increase your cholesterol.
Coconut oil is just an ingredient. Meat eaters that want to avoid saturated fats would avoid eating coconut oil just the same. I rarely use coconut oil not because I want to avoid saturated fats but because I rarely have a recipe that calls for it. It’s also important to note that animal based saturated fats effect the body differently than plant based saturated fats. It’s also important to note that saturated fats are generally overly hyped when highly processed foods, sugars, excessive calories, and lack of fiber are the biggest culprits of poor diet.
I can't go fully vegan because I can't eat any type of legumes (no beans, green peas, chickpea, soy etc), but I'm still trying to eat at least 3 main meals vegan or vegetarian. My favourite is oyster mushroom wings, it's so delicious, you don't miss meat in this meal!
Great video I became vegan overnight but had no idea what I could eat my family is super toxic they don't understand what vegans I have been vegan 5 years now.. I recently using vegan recipes
If you could make a video where I can get all my protein for the day via vegan meals, that would be great. Catches are: all ingredients for every meal must be natural, aka no packaged items (boxed, jarred, vegan protein powder, and the like), protein sources must have the same, better, or slightly under the bioavailability of a skinless chicken breast. Total grams of protein for the day = the total of your body weight. All that while keeping the meals balanced, healthy, and under 2k of total cals. for the day. Ty.
I'm late to this but tomato free (and maybe gluten-free) beginner meal ideas. I've been watching beginners meal ideas, and so many have tomatoes! I can't eat tomatoes, and unlike gluten, they're not very easy to substitute.
I eat similar to vegetarians (but I eat eggs, so I cant call myself one) and my transition from heavily meat based diet in was a long process, it lasted few years. I always felt bad eating meat because I love animals but didnt know anything about cooking, like not at all. When I was cooking rice and added butter, cheese to eat I felt like masterchef 😅 My process was a strange one. I loved duck meat but I love ducks too. One time my mother prepared one I looked at it and felt so heartbroken it was my breaking point I refused to eat it 🤔 Since then I stopped eating 4feet animals (bcs in my perspective killing process was the longest for them), about 2-3 months after it stopped eating birds (and ducks long before 🥲) and the longest for me was probably stage of sea creatures because I loved fish and shrimps 🤔 l still eat eggs because I feel I need them in my diet and they dont feel pain.. Still there is not a lot veg products in my country 😕 Probably someone will think my philisophy of cutting out products because of the killing process is stupid but I dont care, that's what worked for me 🤷♀️
I decided to "go vegan", after 9 mo at ~90% PB, because I enjoyed the food. No UA-cam influence.. no horror footage.. no climate fear. Being a nerd, I undertook "due diligence" & investigated nutrition. Oh! The basics seemed to be pointing towards WF omnivore, so I thought I'd 1st try that & reincorporated beef, eggs, oily fish & hard cheese (swapping out beans, nuts & seeds). That was Mar. 2019 & I remain surprised at how good I feel, every day! I consider myself to be an imperfect vegan whose necessary supplements are animal products.🤭👍🙏
Merle is the sort of vegan that I'd want to be friends with. I'm omni and have no plans to go vegan (some of the core philosophies and ideas I just can't agree with). But I have a healthy respect for plant-based folks, and I think a lot of omnivores could learn a thing or two from approachable vegans like Merle. We eat meatless 3-4 times per week and people think we're nuts.
Core philosophies and ideas? Literally there is just one - to abstain from unnecessarily killing someone. Kind of hard to argue as a concept? I'm curious what you meant by this because while noone is perfect, there is no logical argument against veganism.
@@PooPooBanana2 I mean. Obviously I think there is a logical argument against it. I do not believe that other animals are equal in worth to humans or that killing/consuming them is inherently amoral. Respectfully, I'm not really going to argue about it here, simply because (1) youtube comment spaces are not the place to have in-depth philosophical discussions, especially once metaphysics inevitably gets involved; and (2) I'm not here to upset vegans, I just wanted to tell Merle that non-vegans appreciate her content.
Our reigning vegan queen is finally baaack!! Loves to see it!! Yes please do any and all vegan tips and tricks for newbies I feel like that would be super helpful to a lot of people! But any content is more than welcomed! Cannot wait for the next one! 💖🤗😍😘🙌
This might be a challenge for you, but my friend who was formerly vegan is now dealing with MCAS and cannot eat nuts OR soy, along with other ingredients. Do you have any recipe recommendations I could share with them?
I used to work at McDonald's then one day my sister made me watch cowspiracy within a week I got a new job and was vegan full time the fact that my mom and sister were already vegan
I cant remember why I went vegan, I think it just made more sens in general, it still does, theres not a day in the futur where I will think that the exploitation of life is an beneficial mentality for the wellbeing of the human race.
Are they not showing for some reason? I think there are some technical difficulties on this video because it's not showing in HD & says it's still processing- I submitted a help report to YT so hopefully they'll have this sorted out soon!
Herbs and spices are your friends! My son and I joke that when eating in a restaurant the token vegan dish is the spiciest thing. It's like the chef thinks "they can't have meat so I'll give them chili peppers instead!"
Honestly protein is a huge issue for me. Giving up dairy is cuts out a lot, and most dairy alternatives are mostly fat and/or devoid of protein. In terms of dairy, I really only consume Greek yogurt and cheese, as everything else is easy to replace. Beans, peas, and lentils barely cut it for me protein wise and most mock meats are gross. Lastly, seitan doesn't settle too well with me, as I probably would be vegan a decade ago if it did.
@@faraharmy9870 For reference, the minimum RDA for me is about 80g, but I need a lot more due to health reasons. Part of it is digestive/absorption related, part of it is due to my height/build. I'd say I need 100g of protein a day, but would want 150g for quality of life. I doubt my case is typical, but it's why I settled on a semi-lactovegetarian diet.
Beginner recipes would be great! I'm also interested in your "staple" ingredients that you keep around.
Sounds good!

My bf also has ARFID so he can’t go fully vegan. Don’t beat yourself up over it- you’re doing what you can! That’s better than most of the population! Ultimately your health is most important ❤
I'm curious, why do you think you need extra protein as a diabetic? I've never heard that before.
@@11235Aodh idk if it's for all diabetics, but for me I've noticed a correlation in avoiding lows and highs when I focus more on protein, even when it's alongside carbs
@@XSuperSmilesX Ok, thank you for explaining :). My husbands diabetes is more constant if he avoids fats.
@@11235Aodh yeah and see for me, certain fats (particularly ones from animal products) help keep me stable too! I've been trying to find non animal alternatives, avocados really help!
I went ahead and joined the discord server, will be checking and participating from time to time :)
I suppose I'm about 1/3 of the journey there, been mostly ovo-lacto vegetarian since January, and I've been experimenting with vegan food for a few years now.
Cheers !
So happyp to hear it Joao!! Looking forward to chattin
I'll do it, because (at least for me), if I don't eat the things I really want or crave, I end up not eating at all!!
wishing all of you battling with ED a smooth recovery, I'm starting to see veganism as more of an ally to overcoming my ED 🥰🥰
Quick meals would be a splendid idea, because most of the time I'm too tired for cooking. Maybe touching the topic of mental health regarding veganism?
Love the vid and the energy of your channel !!💜💜
Thank you so much for your thoughtful and very vulnerable message
You are so welcome! Glad to help!
Yes please to the kitchen basics and beginner recipes for the newbies :)
i feel like we are identical in our take on veganism/a plant based diet. +1 to everything you said!!! thank you for making this video ❤
I'm glad you liked it :)
I love the rankings videos and your comments are hilarious.
hehe thank you
Definitely do the pantry tour!!
Can we also talk about vegans dragging vegetarians/acting like vegetarians are the devil? 1.) a lot of vegetarians transition to veganism eventually, and 2.) harm reduction is a thing.
Great tips! I’m just starting out on a vegan/plant-based life style. Thank you!👍
This was great.
Hey bro, i do food reviews while I’m high off zaza on my yöutube chånnel
you're actually doing great! don't feel guilty if you can't go completely vegan, you're already doing quite a lot!
@@VerhoevenSimon That's very kind ☺️
would honestly love to see ur vegan pantry and ur fav snacks and other stuff
Can you make videos on beginner recipes and pantry staples, please! Also, maybe explain the importance of nutritional yeast 🤷🏾♀️
Yeah, my mom cannot STAND then - she simply doesn't need them, but I know a lot of people new to veganism find them very helpful
7:23 That's a good topic. The research is hit or miss as far as plant based saturated fats increasing cholesterol like animal saturated fats do, but the research is also hit or miss as far as dietary cholesterol raising blood cholesterol.
A big yes to your ideas...
I don't think I could ever fully commit to a vegan/plant-based lifestyle but I try to add more vegan/plant-based dishes each week and month.
Robert Smith ~~The Cure~~love it!!!
I like how you put that picture in around 3 minutes. Get that negativity out of that life! Thanks for the encouragement! You're the best!
You're the best!
Vegan beginner recipes and pantry essentials would be very helpful, so yes please!
You got it!
Love you, love your content. Not trying to throw shade, try applying lip liner prior to applying darks/reds lip colors? (Pro make up artist)
Yes, please do videos on vegan pantry and simple beginner recipes.
You’re so kind and compassionate 💓
I can't go fully vegan because I can't eat any type of legumes (no beans, green peas, chickpea, soy etc), but I'm still trying to eat at least 3 main meals vegan or vegetarian. My favourite is oyster mushroom wings, it's so delicious, you don't miss meat in this meal!
I went cold turkey after watching "What The Health" 5 years ago... but everyone is different and it's definitely a mental thing
Whatever works, ya know!
Pantry tour would be great and so helpful!!!

Prepping has been a challenge for me. However, I love cooking for myself. I know what ingredients are going into my body.
Same here, cooking is like therapy for me
Great video, Merle! We featured your video on my website this week in our "Concessions" area. Link is in my bio!

Great video I became vegan overnight but had no idea what I could eat my family is super toxic they don't understand what vegans I have been vegan 5 years now.. I recently using vegan recipes
you're so real for this merle
Thanks for sharing this most important information. Thanks!!
Glad it was helpful!
Great tips Myrtle! Keep up the good work!
Ty.
Thank you for this. You put it perfectly and I love all your points, especially about not being a perfect vegan. :)
im so glad it's helpful!
Can you believe that YT showed me an ad for McDonald's McRib before this video? 😂 I love those peanut butter cups too and also Cocomels.
I'm late to this but tomato free (and maybe gluten-free) beginner meal ideas. I've been watching beginners meal ideas, and so many have tomatoes! I can't eat tomatoes, and unlike gluten, they're not very easy to substitute.
Great idea
Lovely video! I just started in Janaury (2022) and it's great to know a few new tips c:
Glad you enjoyed!
I need the list of essentials and recipes😝
Still there is not a lot veg products in my country 😕 Probably someone will think my philisophy of cutting out products because of the killing process is stupid but I dont care, that's what worked for me 🤷♀️
This came at such a good time for me because I’m a new vegeling
@@Shadeadder An animals life is not worth more than your taste pleasure?
what part of "im not arguing ethics in a youtube comments section" do you people not understand
I was just talking to my brother about me starting this whole journey and you posted this, coincidence? I think not

Yeah, I know what I'm doing, but still want a sense of what you do in terms of pantry staples.
This might be a challenge for you, but my friend who was formerly vegan is now dealing with MCAS and cannot eat nuts OR soy, along with other ingredients. Do you have any recipe recommendations I could share with them?
Must say, love the shady frame flash! 😂❤

I cant remember why I went vegan, I think it just made more sens in general, it still does, theres not a day in the futur where I will think that the exploitation of life is an beneficial mentality for the wellbeing of the human race.
Please let us snob though your pantry! I'd love to have some advice on vegan pantry essentials!

I love the shade 😂
Herbs and spices are your friends! My son and I joke that when eating in a restaurant the token vegan dish is the spiciest thing. It's like the chef thinks "they can't have meat so I'll give them chili peppers instead!"
Name names, Merle!!! 😂😅😂
same 3 documentaries really convinced me to go vegan

Honestly protein is a huge issue for me. Giving up dairy is cuts out a lot, and most dairy alternatives are mostly fat and/or devoid of protein. In terms of dairy, I really only consume Greek yogurt and cheese, as everything else is easy to replace. Beans, peas, and lentils barely cut it for me protein wise and most mock meats are gross. Lastly, seitan doesn't settle too well with me, as I probably would be vegan a decade ago if it did.
How much protein do you want/need to consume a day?
@@faraharmy9870 For reference, the minimum RDA for me is about 80g, but I need a lot more due to health reasons. Part of it is digestive/absorption related, part of it is due to my height/build. I'd say I need 100g of protein a day, but would want 150g for quality of life. I doubt my case is typical, but it's why I settled on a semi-lactovegetarian diet.
It was hard pausing at the right time
