5 Step Felling Plan that I've lived by every since I was a greenhorn on the ground! 1. Heights and Hazards 2. Lean(Good side/Bad side) 3. Escape route(45° in the opposite direction of the falling tree!) 4. Notch(80% width of the tree. Conventional/Humboldt/Open face) 5. Back Cut(Leaving 7-10% thickness of the tree left for Hingewood/Holdingwood) This is the 5 Step felling plan that I learnt on day one at a Line Clearance Tree company! I went from the bottom to the top! No pun intended! Got my white hat there and became an A Foreman as a Line Clearance Arborist! They had some of the absolute safest procedures out there. I'm very blessed to have been able to attend all of their training courses. It's stuck with me every since! From Felling trees to Rigging and Roping trees! Knowledge is power and you choose to share it with other people for no reason other than to help, that’s one of the most honorable things a human can do. Love to you and the family buckin❤️
Climbed my first tree today. A 35ft pine. Limbed it and toped it. Then fell it. Very fun day. Thanks for your videos Buckin definitely helped me work twards this day. Be Kind and have fun.
Congrats Ben! Hope you always have a little bit of caution in mind when cutting and climbing. Sounds like you’re a go getter! Doing all 3 of those things takes skill and determination and you have it.
First of all: Why would ANYONE give a thumbs down on this video? That just baffles the heck out of me. I just don't get it. Now, Buckin' I thank you for the information. You know, lot's of people would never share this information with others. I know this from personal experience. Not with tree cutting, but other venues. They would not tell you anything. "Let em figure it out for themselves" they would say. I hate that. Especially when it comes to doing things could potentially kill you!! I have always enjoyed helping people and sharing information with them in order to help them out with something, and watching them get better at doing it, and even sometimes better that I can. Anything. I take my hat off to you for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. Thanks Billy. Jim
This comment is on point. They dislike because they want to save a tree. Burning gas in the saw is bad for the environment. These men are capitalist bastards charging money and killing trees and environment. Those same people think electricity is magic and their hot tub is manufactured useing fairy dust and there Tesla makes the world cleaner and the production and mining of the ore was on another planet that can sustain itself by itself.
Sup Buckin’! Only been watching your content for about 2 months but I can’t get enough of the kindness and positivity! It brings me out of any funk I might be in that particular day- keep it up man, we really appreciate it!
Hey Buckin Billy Ray, I have a friend thats been cutting trees for 10 years that has caught my interest in them. Ive always loved climbing and the thought of making it a job. I found your channel and have been watching you cut trees for months now. Ive come to the conclusion that this is what I want to do. You have great information and a great mindset, and you arent opposed to sharing; Thank you for letting us in on all you do. It inspired me to get into the trade and appreciate all that goes into it. Time to be a groundsman for a while. Thanks again.
Hi friends . Back again this is one of my favourite videos on youtube. Its so great to see the comraderie between father and son. Plus my fave saws in action. Be kind all. Good night from Gisborne New Zealand. Thanks Buckin.
Buckin Billy! You have made a connection with me. Yes, I cut down some for firewood, some to use for the frames of a sailboat, some because I needed room for my house and garage. Now there are some dead ones that have to come out before I build. It used to be a triumph to me, now it is sad that it had to come down. I definitely use the wood, I very much appreciate the gift God has given me. Your kitchen counter raw edge is unparalleled. That piece of wood is proof of God. Also, that is a very good point about small notches leaving more room for the wedge.
Just started watching your videos....by far my new favorite channel. Your positive and we'll spoken. I am a homesteader from Lebanon Maine and I do alot of cutting. I just got a wood boss portable mill this spring. I have alot of big oak and pine to take. Some of them lean pretty good. I've been watching alot of videos on stepping can't wait for the rain to stop so I can give her a go.
Billy mate, you really sort me out sometimes, remind me to stay on track in order to contribute to a better world - cheers and I wish you well as always.
Buckin great video. Have cut a lot of trees for almost fifty years but always pick up tips and pointers from you. Thank you sir. Far from a professional ny upstate NY 👍
I'm pretty much done tree trimming. I'm 64 and I started in 1977 I like your show I like your words thank you for your channel I wish you were around when I started
Welcome to the new subscribers and a salute for the true blues.... another master class tuition, that grain was very interesting, great work “team smith”.... hope the start of the week is kind to you . Love & hugs for our cynthinator and mama buckin....Duffy👊.....😎👍🇦🇺
I'm a new commenter but am absolutely loving the combination of tree work and messages of kindness that permeate your videos and your channel. When I tell people "I'm addicted to this guy on UA-cam from Canada who's a logger/tree man, loves antique chainsaws and has messages of kindness" they look at me funny (I'm not in any way connected to the industry and rarely even get to run my 455 Rancher. I live near a major US city). Then they watch 2 minutes of your videos and it all makes sense to them. Keep speading the love Buckin'!
Glad you jumped into the comments section to let us know your here , glad you found and love the channel and don’t be a stranger in the comments eh... much love from down under....😎👍🇦🇺
You helped me out. I cut small dead red pine down by my house about 3 years ago. Too small to wedge until I got the saw far in on the back cut so I ended up pinching the saw. Couldn't get the wedges in at that point and had to hook up a pulley system and pull it with my truck. It came down but I should have driven the wedge in at an angle like here. Thank you billy Ray!
I love to hear the crack of those saws sounds like music to my ears. It amazes me how that wedge can make that tree move that much at the top of the tree
timothy combs manual labour boy I know you don’t work. Ha ha and don’t say you meant it because you would be telling porky pies he he. You will upset the buckin community. Be nice fella.
Billy Ray, I get as much education from your messages and heartfelt talks as I do from watching you cut timber and listen to your pointers and directions of what to do and how to do it. Thanks my brother, and may God continue to bless you and give you deep breaths and sharp chains.
I agree about the grain of the wood that is just a natural part of nature like you two guys cannot put into words how much I appreciate your videos you two guys are a grain of wood very genuine lovely nature orientated guys with lots of love of you send lots of people with your videos thank you

Working for a tree service in Southern Indiana. Been watching for a while I've learned some things but most of all I love your sense of life. And love watching the big drops. Best part of my day is sending a tree creaking over
Those are nice stumps, first class...love reading the forest from inside the tree. Thank you for teaching us to read a cut too makes our world better and we'll spread that kindness...I like visiting with you friends
Hi Buckin!! My neighbor gave me 335 that never ran from new found out the intake boot was pinched at the factory new boot carb kit and a pipe. It's pretty wicked saw now!!! Love this place❤
Good Morning, I was asked "George, what is your favorite coffee?" My answer is always, "this" coffee. I have learned to enjoy what is within my reach. This eliminates a whole bunch of discontent. Smiling, George.
I truly appreciate your passion for tree work. Thank you buckin for helping me out. Cutting some pines near my home. Got the butterfly's in the belly of you know what I mean!!!!!!
I learned a lot from this one thanks Buckin. Love seeing you and your boy work together my boy is 10 and he just bought his own chain saw with his own money proud daddy that day I won’t let him run unless I’m around with him he is very careful and I’ve got all the PPE for him! He started out when he was 2 years old no joke with a machete and and there’s still stumps around with his hinge wood on them from years ago little arm and leg size trees! I love working with him he grades each one of my stumps after I cut a tree down I love it I give you tons of credit he knows you just as well as I do thanks again Buckin!
OK, this guy is a true master at what he's doing. I would never have either the confidence or the skill to fell a tree in this kind of a scenario. He had them fall precisely where he wanted. Hats off.
Billy Ray thanks for all great video's. The 1st video of your I saw was with a 125 super pro, which caught my attention. My Dad was a NW logger, ran Mac as long as I can remember. Your video's with those Mac bring back a lot memories for me. Dad still cuts mostly firewood now at 86 years old, you know how it is once it get in you blood its there forever. He still loves to fall and the feel of a saw in his hands. I built dad a log splitter when he retired, its on it 2nd complete rebuild and it's 4th motor....old logger never retire.
So gratefull to you for taking the time to explain and show when and how to use wedges without putting me to sleep basically reading out of a book. You are raising up a hell of tree man.
After receiving chemo and radiation 3 yrs ago for a stage 4 cancer scare i started putting butter in my coffee to get more good fat in my diet, since then i use butter always. Fat is more essential than carbohydrates thus the keto craze. Cinnamon and grass fed whey protein etc etc, all kinds of good things to add to coffee to make it more like food. Organically grown beans fresh ground is scrumptious. I am lucky and blessed to have had an experienced personal trainer/friend that guided me through recovery. And my saintly mother who is gone 2years now. Thanks Buckin for being my cool uncle that i never got to meet until this UA-cam channel was found. Your decisive clarity is what keeps me coming back. And i will be looking for the rematch with Lil Buckin... He's a touch opponent.
Buckin for President! Your energy has brought so many kind souls to the same platform. Stay strong everyone and keep drinking that cowboy coffee that gets you fired up
Billy can I totally agree with you you I have been watching your channel as you know for ages I have sent you some messages which bless you you have replied to me me thank you very much but you are totally right I am nothing to do with chainsaws login it is just your channel the just way you are you bring a smile to my face and you make life worth living hope you understand mate and thank you for everything you do to help me and I'm sure a lot of other people on here that are not in the industry you are that you are an amazing fellow a credit to the human race xx
I have a desktop waterfall with this saying on it. "Life's not about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain" Maybe you've heard it before? It makes so much sense!
I just love the father son relationship thats going on here.... That son thinks the world of dad How good is that tottal respect from both at a guess !!!!!
This is one of your best videos in my opinion, your intro really made me feel alive and inspired, your comment on the first cut and the lean angle hit home too. Stay safe thank you for all you do !!
Beautiful slab countertop. I always love seeing your videos and how humble and peaceful you are great feller and I would be honored to work beside you and I would move in a heartbeat to work and learn the skills that you have mastered. Love you my friend stand up and buck my friend
Thank you for your passion, thank you for your attention to detail and explaining all of the small things to us that would otherwise be missed in your process. I really enjoy your videos and I continue to be drawn to your teaching that comes with so much passion.
I watch a lot of your videos and I feel like you're a prime example of how life works. Be kind and love is everything in the world and I want to thank you for sharing your knowledge. Experience is the only way to gain true knowledge and you sharing yours makes it safer for people like me. I'll never go into the woods to cut a tree without my axe and some wedges. Thanks
It's amazing watching a pro in their element, and it's really something special when they take the time to impart the wisdom they've gained over decades of work. Thanks BBR 😎👍
It's about finding what you love and then sharing the love that you build while doing it. Keep standing tall and buck'n and the Buckin Army will keep spreading the love.
hi buckin! thanks for the great lesson. greetings to KELCI and BEN and all messangers of kindness! the high side is left . and you know what, LETS UNITE! LOVE WINS! good to have you as a friend, brother!
By golly, when Buckin' Billy Ray Smith says he loves everyone, I really believe he does. 👍 Found your channel a week or so back, and I really appreciate the knowledge, the experience and the lift. You're The Man!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills with us. Six of us from our church have been helping remove downed trees in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. I always learn something new from your vids and apply it on the job. Enjoy your positive outlook on life and watching you work with and encourage your son.
If I was a young man ( I'm 72 ) I would do the same thing as you have spent your life doing . you have a good healthy life being free . A free life is a good life .
Please Don't Stop Share your Stuff and Ideas. Thanks a ton for learning away your knowledge. I've followed this channel for some years now, and I've learned SO much from how to start the undercut, to how's the best way to throw the lems down so it's better for the groundworkers to pick the lems up, and how's the best way to cut down a big tree with back-lean. Keep It Going! Lots of love from Norway
Another reason I come back is your dedication to your family. I love that your wife supports your channel and works with you, your love and respect of your father and your teaching felling and Buckin to your son.
Hey Buckin' if you read this great, if not I know someone will. First off I just want to say thank you. For not just posting videos but for making me feel comfortable when I watch. Like you mention at 2:20. Being 21 I'm still a youngster in college for mechanical engineering which I will finish in about 2 years. But mostly I just want to explain to you sir and those who read this that there's a lot you've helped me with. I struggle with ADHD and the anxiety that comes with it. Let me just say this, the anxious thoughts sometimes bring me to a dark, very dark place. Watching your videos with yourself and your son in them helps ALOT. I didn't realize how much I actually look up to you more than just you producing vids. I look up to you like you are my Dad. A true role model you are for me. I have grown to be as strong as I can and I am getting stronger everyday. I just wanted to say this to express my gratitude before its too late. I seriously cant thank you enough and I appreciate you setting the mood of the videos where you welcome everyone to watching. I always read what you put on the screen because there's a lot to learn at 21. But thank you again for everything you do, helping me fight through the anxiety attacks and the anxious thoughts day by day. I wish you and the family best of luck and I hope all is well. Someday I hope to meet you in person. But if you made it this far, I hope you have a wonderful day and I hope to talk soon. Best, AC
That’s exactly it - I just like being here too. It’s been so much fun learning about this world of tree cutting while on lockdown. I especially appreciate the life advice, and encouragement to remember that love always wins.
Since watching you, and hearing your positive attitude on doing what you love I have taken the dive into to tree work. I have found some great people to work for and I'm greatful to have you to teach me how to be a better faller. Thank you buckin.
I do pick up not just a little bit from watching but a lot - thanks. the more i watch the more i learn. Up till about 6 years ago i had never hold a powersaw in my hands and since i started looking at all your videos some i don´t know 2-3 years ago i have learned a lot - but praktisch make master so i try to remember what i have seen you do and it works so thank you. By the way done two axes as well - rehafted one and made one from an old head i found based also on seeing you do it.
@@jbbolts No the new growth is the wood on the outer part of the trunk. The thin layer just below the bark is what produces new wood (and new bark) so it grows wood outwards while growing new bark, and pushing the old bark outwards like skin. As new wood grows, the inner layers die and harden into heartwood
I own a chainsaw no where near as professional as these on the video, I find cutting firewood very therapeutic and special, I’m recovering from a break down from stress at work and find doing manual labour really gives me a kick stay well everyone peace out.
Same here buddie I just have a small huskie but use the heck out of it heat my house with wood hope your ready for winter cheers
Hope things turn out ok for you Shaun. Take care.

He's a touch opponent.

I have a desktop waterfall with this saying on it. "Life's not about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain"
Maybe you've heard it before? It makes so much sense!

Thanks
Thanks for the knowledge sharing buckin
It's amazing watching a pro in their element, and it's really something special when they take the time to impart the wisdom they've gained over decades of work. Thanks BBR 😎👍
It's about finding what you love and then sharing the love that you build while doing it. Keep standing tall and buck'n and the Buckin Army will keep spreading the love.

Enjoy your positive outlook on life and watching you work with and encourage your son.
thx friend
Hey MR.BUCKIN'SMITH I finally got a SAW!!!! 46cc Proyama...todays the day brother! Cheers, Jerbs. Wish you and yours many blessings
Billy your a great teacher. I enjoy watching you I have learned a lot thank you so much God bless.
Nice optical illusion around 5:55 as the bark of the two trees blends together.
If I was a young man ( I'm 72 ) I would do the same thing as you have spent your life doing . you have a good healthy life being free . A free life is a good life .
Love ya Buckin’ Army! Everyone have a great day!
Last minute save on that first fell ol son AWESOME!!!!!!! I love it !!!
Best,
AC
Great video buckin thanks for sharing some of you very valuable knowledge from experience wich is the best
Gorgeous property there and nice buildings!
Really learned a great deal from this one. Thanks brother and stay safe
Outstanding. New to your channel. Humor, thoughtfulness, and action. Good medicine!
That’s exactly it - I just like being here too. It’s been so much fun learning about this world of tree cutting while on lockdown. I especially appreciate the life advice, and encouragement to remember that love always wins.
Great videos buckin and Hogan , the young fella is a man now 👍
Since watching you, and hearing your positive attitude on doing what you love I have taken the dive into to tree work.
I've learned SO MUCH FROM THIS CHANNEL its amazing how great of a teacher ol Buckin & Cletus are. Forever grateful, love you man. 🙏
I learn a new trick every time you make a vid. Thank god your out there teaching and sharing knowledge, your a good man dude. Cheers.
Counting those rings off was so cool.
Wouldnt the newer (slower) growth be in the center of the tree? ...and therefore the 30 years should be in the center?
@@jbbolts No the new growth is the wood on the outer part of the trunk. The thin layer just below the bark is what produces new wood (and new bark) so it grows wood outwards while growing new bark, and pushing the old bark outwards like skin.
As new wood grows, the inner layers die and harden into heartwood
Hey Billy Hogan Glad to see you guys working together love you guys take care...❤️🙏💪☮️
Brother, what you do is pure quality, can't stop watching your channell.....the best of the best....god bless, and safe falling....respect...mark...
thx mark
Buckin, your counters look awesome! Good job!
