I probably didn't need one because I could have just switched off the circuit breaker when I left town. However, I did learn a lot about how well extra insulation around the water heater helps save energy. Do it as soon as possible!

Thanks for the helpful video! Any indication on how much energy you saved using the smart switch?

I can't say exactly, so that might be a little disappointing. However, it did show me 2 things. Adding insulation to the water heater pays for itself in a couple years, and switching it off during a weekend away does save energy overall. I can still turn it off with the circuit breaker, and I'll never go without an insulation blanket.
I think the Aquanta is more useful if you have more people in the household. It was just me when I was testing it, so it probably didn't add a lot to the energy savings compared to switching off the circuit breaker. I did enjoy seeing the data, so I'm very happy that I had it. If you're interested in the the data, you might like a video that "Technology Connections" about water heaters. I learned a few things from that video.
