I used to get bad acne in middle school. Realized separately that I was lactose intolerant. Cut out lactose and my acne completely cleared! Never dealt with bad acne again in my life. I also get flare ups of tinea versicolor. Also seperately and more recently, I was diagnosed with PCOS. Made adjustments to my eating to help with the PCOS, but then my tinea started clearing up and being way more manageable! And any times I start to eat more dairy or stray from my diet, my skin responds. You really are what you eat - the better my diet becomes for my body, the more glowing I become! It is so frustrating trying to figure out the exact things that irritate your body though. It's a long process, but worth it.
My son had horrific eczema from about 6 months to a year and a half. I went to a dermatologist and later on an allergy specialist. Nothing helped and he actually seemed to flair when i used the medicine they gave me. My pediatrician was in favor of me trying to eliminate foods that were common allergies like wheet and milk. I did this at the beginning and used oat milk as a replacement for milk. He got worse, so out of desperation i started testing other foods. Removed oats and nuts and corn and his exzema got soooo much better. When i would eat oats or he would try them, his skin would weep. (What i ate while breastfeeding definitely effected him too. ) I hope you are able to find relief. Thanks for all the great content!
oh wow I'm so glad you were able to figure out what was causing it!! The only time I tried getting rid of nuts was when I was on the autoimmune protocol when I was going through TSW. Maybe I'll try that again after the low histamine diet if it doesn't help
I have advice regarding eczema, and other autoimmune issues, if you want it. If not, just ignore this message. I also commented on this video with a separate possibility, unrelated to my advice for you, for Marisa to try, in case you also want to try it as an alternative option since you know exactly what your son is eating. Good luck with the health of your son.
I talked to a friend once about someone she knew who had a very similar skin issue. I’m not sure if it was horrible eczema or psoriasis. She had no luck with pharmaceuticals or doctors, specialty diets, etc. She got so fed up she just started eating only meat because everything seemed to make her flare. This was before the popularity of the carnivore type diets. Anyways, she did totally reverse the issues, and eventually was able to add back some foods over much time. I’m sure you have a video on meat-based diets, and I’m sure you’ve tried! I certainly hope this new attempt is the bullseye 🎯 ❤
I did a comprehensive gut health test that, in theory, would have shown if a carnivore diet would help me. But it showed that my gut health was near-perfect so I was told by the practitioner that there was no reason to try it. But if I get desperate, I absolutely will try it lol
I’m dealing with histamine intolerance. Going on since 2018-19. I figured it out last year after years of researching and no help from doctors. It’s just awful. It’s a digestive system issue at the root of it all. All the symptoms of histamine intolerance, I got them. It’s mentally exhausting. I wish you luck. I use jojoba, argan, coconut and castor oil on my skin. I was using tallow but like you it wasn’t cutting it. I also find that chamomile tea helps. Drink it and also spray it on your skin. This was a great video. Thank you.
I massively messed up my skin barrier after already having chronically dry skin and I have no idea if it'll help you but vaseline was the thing that fixed it. Moisturizing thoroughly and then locking all of that moisture in overnight with vaseline took me from constantly dry and red and flaky with chapped lips to skin that actually feels hydrated and normal.
I was doing that with a zinc paste and it helped a lot! Moisturize to the max and then lock it in with zinc. But that's what made my skin splotchy 😂 because the zinc was absorbing into the bad parts of the skin and then not absorbing as much sunlight as the healthy skin lmao. I'll try vaseline!
So when you said your potential skin issue was probably atopic dermatitis, it made me think about my journey with dyshidrotic eczema. I had itchy bumps all over my fingers for like 4 years. I believe I cured it at this point, but you're not going to like what I'm about to say. I used one of those steroidal ointments for years as well. Eventually with enough consistency, it worked. I'd apply it every night to my affected areas. I am not a doctor so I am not prescribing anything, just letting you know how I resolved my eczema journey.
Steroid creams don't actually heal anything, they're just a bandaid. It's possible that you healed the underlying cause while using the steroids so when you came off, your skin was clear. But there has to be a deeper healing component beyond the steroids. And for me personally, steroids are what caused my biggest issues so I will never be touching them again
I am again going to suggest looking into "pollen food allergy syndrome", or "Oral Allergy Syndrome". Especially since you eat so many vegetables. So if this histamine diet does not work, or is only somewhat effective, then the reason anti-histamine medications worked on your symptoms in the past is probably because anti-histamine medication also helps with "pollen food allergy syndrome" symptoms. If it turns out that you are having issues with pollen foods, you will end up with a lot more food options than if this is a histamine issue. As long as the "seasons" that affect you are only one or two at most. Notably, carrots, apples, parsley, peaches, and celery are some of the biggest offenders across the most pollen season foods. Hibiscus, onion, raspberries, and cucumber each show up in the list of foods linked to one of the pollen types each. I figure I should mention that since you showed them as a part of what you are eating. I have compiled a list of each pollen type, and the trigger foods associated with them, if you ever want a copy to use as a starting point for your research, if you decide this is a possible cause. If this histamine diet does not work, at least what I am suggesting is another option, and hope, rather than having nothing to try, and no answers. Good luck.
Thanks so much for the suggestion! If my symptoms are present year round with zero correlation with the seasons, do you think it's still possible to have pollen food allergy syndrome?
Upon further research, it looks like pollen food allergy syndrome just causes an itchy mouth and throat? I never get those symptoms -- my symptoms are skin-based
@@MissFitAndNerdy The reason I discovered this was because a friend had hives, blood in her stool, swollen tongue, labored breathing, major rashes, and more. So it is much more varied than you have read. Hence my suggestion for looking into it. Especially since if YOU get a rash, or hives, since your skin is already compromised, It is not a big leap in logic that what you have now could be the result. Maybe if your skin ever fully recovered, things would be different. So at least for now, I stand by my suggestion, and hope you keep it in mind. Especially if the histamine diet works, and you want to figure out what foods to slowly re-introduce. But even more so if it does not work, and you need a new, less restrictive path to explore.
@@MissFitAndNerdy You can still have pollen food allergy symptoms if you consistently eat linked food that continue to trigger an allergic response. Especially since so many of the "offensive" foods are often preserved for year round use, or are used as filler, or flavoring in recipes these days. Such as finding celery, or carrots in spaghetti sauce, or the fact that you can get apple sauce/juice/pie year round. The effect just tends to be worse during the season you are affected by. Tropical fruits tend to be the least problematic, since unless you have a latex issue, you should be safe since they have no link, or overlap with the other pollen season foods.
Chronic illness/pain is so exhausting and frustrating when it keeps coming back… hang in there. This video is a godsend cuz I follow a low histamine/oxalate diet for interstitial cystitis. DAO enzyme is super helpful when you do eat histamine! As a fellow chocoholic, I use carob powder as an alternative. Be kind to yourself 😊
This is the weirdest piece of advice I can give you but one of the things I do when I'm breaking out is use sauerkraut brine as a cleanser before moisturizing. As you know, it's all about having a balanced microbiome and crowding out the bacteria that are hurting you with ones that are neutral or beneficial, rather than killing them all and hoping you get luckier with the new batch that shows up. Of course, you kinda have to make your own sauerkraut for this, you can't just use the liquid at the bottom of a jar you bought at Trader Joe's 😂 You wouldn't be able to eat it because it's high histamine, but it does make for a lovely gift for your mum and you can keep a little brine in the fridge.
I am excited for this new endeavor and hope this at least helps! I have dry sensitive skin with bouts of yeast and psoriasis (yay). Have you ever delved into the world of korean skin care? Very gentle, very demure (omg). Beauty of jeosan and somebimi I love, also haruharu wonder too. I might try this meat company bc some meat I tolerate better than others. Anyways good luck and I am sure you will learn a lot!

Ugh I don’t know how I feel about carnivore diet BUT this is a bit complicated and I’m thinking that for me, it might be easier to just do carnivore. Anyway, I subscribed and will follow your journey! Currently have a terrible outbreak on my face and it’s some sort of dermatitis 😑
Oh my, this looks like what I had! I actually had an allergy to pesticides on grains and vegetables commonly in the US. I actually did more animal based, added magnesium/vitamin D (resist chocolate urge because that was magnesium craving oddly enough, cant absorb magnesium without vitamin D and vice/versa). Swapped to pelligrino as well, and got a Zerowater filter. Also, its really good you're not taking anti histamines, it causes dementia if I remember right by shrinking your brain oddly enough. Lot of the allergy meds do that. Try adding castor oil as well for your skin! That thing is a game changer. Hope this all helps, and keep on healing.
omg the pesticides 😫 I wouldn't be surprised if that's it. Maybe I'll try to go pesticide free next! I eat organic but I could be better about washing my produce and could do more research on the foods I'm eating that might have more pesticide residue
@@MissFitAndNerdy for sure! There’s some vegetables for me that always flare it like asparagus and Brussels sprouts. Prolly since we are unable to wash them correctly too. Before the last bit of the video, I was about to ask if you had an air purifier. 😸 Similar to you, I didn't used to get seasonal allergies until I moved to the Bay Area, CA. This got exasperated when I got my pets - two rabbits and two cats in a studio apartment = lots of pet hair and hay dust. 😶 I'm about to invest in several air purifiers - looking at a rabbit air and a smaller levoit for right next to my bed. I'm not making any other lifestyle changes in the meantime, so it should be interesting to see how much the purifier itself helps!
Sad news: PepsiCo bought Siete 😢 I just found that out today and we all know what usually happens when small companies get bought by big conglomerates 😩😭😭
If your skin eventually cleared after that initial TSW flare maybe the diet you was on then was working for you? I'm going through the same thing. I went through TSW a few years ago and eventually my skin was 100% perfect for the first time I can ever remember. 12 months later I had a bad flare for a few months. Things eventually cleared again but around 12 months ago I started with patches of eczema. This has gradually got worse and I'm currently going through another flare. Not as bad as the last and certainly not as bad as TSW but who knows how bad things might get. I feel confident that returning to the diet I was on during TSW would eventually lead to healthy skin again but that diet was just so depressing for me.
Yeah, I was thinking about going back to that diet (I was on the autoimmune protocol at that time). But I had actually tapered off that diet a good 3-4 months before my skin fully cleared so it doesn't seem like a strong link D:
Wow. Restricting histamine is tricky. Histamine levels in foods vary very widely from sample to sample. Have you considered increasing your body's ability to handle histamine, especially in your gut? Have you tried megadosing on quercetin for allergies? Have you tried to make a physical barrier on your skin to keep irritants off of you? Or have you tried rinsing the pollen and stuff off of your skin more frequently? How about strengthening your skin barrier with products that contain protective ingredients like snail mucin, ceramides, vitamin C, and panthenol?
Yes, I'm doing things to support histamine clearance as well like taking a ton of quercetin and DAO. What have you seen as the recommended megadose of quercetin? The physical barrier part is tricky because sweating makes it worse. So I can't really wear long sleeves or anything when it's hot. And as far as rinsing goes, I like the idea but the more I get my skin wet, the dryer it gets 😫
Ive been trying to heal my gut issues which include histamine intolerance. I have tried all the diets and supplements and didnt fix anything. One thing i have come across is many ppl healing gut and histamine issues through brain retraining and nervous system work. It can be that your body/btlrain is in a hypersensitive state and thats why you are having these reactions.
I don't think I'd ever want to permanently leave southern california. I'd want to find a solution so that I can stay around my family. But I've considered moving to like mexico for a short period of time to heal and then moving back once my body can tolerate more
Marissa, You are a saint for making this video and going on this journey because I am side-by-side with ya sister! I started my own TSW journey 10 months ago, this was also my second time with TSW but I didn’t know what it was the first time… ❤️🩹 Anyways, I am also on a low histamine journey and would LOVE to know your recipes, podcasts, accounts reccs, etc. I’m also using the same skincare as you but the Biotech product is new and I may try shilajit as well. I’m definitely grabbing those herbal teas you recommended when I hit the store today. Keep us updated and I pray this helps us both heal, thanks for sharing your journey! PS, your TSW videos saved my life!!! 💕
Hi there! How are your skin and overall well-being on this diet? I want to say WOW, that's really hardcore approache on the diet. Usually I'm doing eliminations one by one, exluding some category of food from my diet, because it's really mentally exhausting to cut out all at once for me. I've tried that with aip and don't want to anymore 😂 I hope you'll get some results as you go. I'd like to recommend food diary, it's really helpful to figure out the cause. I'm still having my own little flare, it became lesser, but still there. I'm doing a light version of food diary where I record what I've changed and my skin condition. I'm kinda stuck right now because I totally don't know what the cause of this flare. Also i wanted to ask have you tried therapy? Did it help? I've done some, but maybe that was not enough. On the food tips: as far as I know you can eat fish and ground beef if it's fresh or frozen, so I'm buying fresh and freeze them in portions (or buy frozen)
I'm now a week into the low histamine diet and honestly I haven't noticed a difference D: so idk. I personally have no problem eliminating whatever I need to to try to heal my skin so the restrictiveness of the diet isn't a big deal for me. And I am keeping a food diary! :) I have gone to therapy! I have a few videos about it on my channel :)
Marissa - I’m so glad you’re doing the low histamine diet and I hope it helps but I’m wondering if it’s literally just the kombucha? I went through TSW in 2020 (which is how I came across your videos) and I’m pretty much healed but if I have kombucha I would honestly explode!! I need to be careful with super fermented/high salicylate foods (broccoli, spinach, tomatoes) but I can eat things like eggs etc which are technically fermented (just not enough to trigger me). I think it’s great to do this extreme detox from histamines but I also think you would see drastic lessening of flares just by cutting out kombucha because it’s just way too fermented for us #TSWWarriors. Sending love ❤
I haven't eaten gluten since I was like 8 and had skin issues way before I started drinking caffeine 😫 But I'm so glad you found something that works for you!!
Totally relate to all the conflicting information. The only person I trust to tell me if a food is high in histamines is my organic chemistry teacher lol
How long does it take to "reset" your body if you stop taking anti histamine daily? My doctor told me to use them on a daily base for years, but i felt like they where working less and less. So I stopped taking them daily after your video, but how long would it take my body approx to reset you think?
Honestly I haven't done a lot of research on this. But I've seen people in forums who go through some gnarly withdrawal from it for a few weeks at least but I don't think everyone goes through it that badly. If you're getting bad withdrawal symptoms you could considering tapering off rather than quitting cold turkey
No eczema growing up, after second *ovid *accine in few months I got red ezcema. I think it was candida then i get pregnant and skin went worst. After pregnancy skin went also worst and I used steroid creams for only 3 months and then went through TSW in January 2023. Today I battle with chronic hives and histamin problems. Flare looks just like yours in the pictures. Ofc diet and gut health is key but is it the *accines or what ???!
@@MissFitAndNerdyso when you travel and then come back to California is that when you notice it the most, of does it just flare up randomly? Or after you consume certain things?

I have celiac disease so yes I do think it could be autoimmune. I’ve seen plenty of dermatologists but I will not be using medication to mask the symptoms (been there, done that, suffered severely for it)
@@MissFitAndNerdy I understand that, I developed psoriasis in the last year at the age of 42 and will only consider biologics as a last resort. I do have pretty classic symptoms of histamine intolerance and MCAS, which tend to flare every couple of months. I take vitamin C religiously and use a DAO supplement when it’s really bad. @@MissFitAndNerdy I think the longest stretch was about three months straight, which was hard to maintain. I love my leftovers! But when the HI symptoms are really bad, I can’t really eat much in general, so I naturally stop eating a lot of high histamine foods or histamine liberators.

I just saw that! I'm so sad 😭 I hope they dont change anything about it
this video pops up just as i'm contemplating following a low histamine diet as well!
Hope this hels!
MCAS/Mold toxicity? Would 111% get an ERMI test done on your house. Had TSA as well
Hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤️
you too!
Have you considered moving? I know it’s drastic but if you could it’s worth a shot. Good luck!
I don't think I'd ever want to permanently leave southern california. I'd want to find a solution so that I can stay around my family. But I've considered moving to like mexico for a short period of time to heal and then moving back once my body can tolerate more
Marissa,
You are a saint for making this video and going on this journey because I am side-by-side with ya sister! I started my own TSW journey 10 months ago, this was also my second time with TSW but I didn’t know what it was the first time… ❤️🩹
Anyways, I am also on a low histamine journey and would LOVE to know your recipes, podcasts, accounts reccs, etc.
Histamine still growling when its in the freezer
I'm now a week into the low histamine diet and honestly I haven't noticed a difference D: so idk. I personally have no problem eliminating whatever I need to to try to heal my skin so the restrictiveness of the diet isn't a big deal for me. And I am keeping a food diary! :)
I have gone to therapy!
It's possible that it's only one food! We'll see what happens on this diet and when I reintroduce :)
@@MissFitAndNerdygood luck!! 🙏🏻💪🏻
Have you looked into allergy testing at all? If you have an allergy it would probably be helpful to figure out what it is to!
seconding this
Yes, I've done multiple allergy panels
I cut out gluten and most caffiene due to PCOS diagnosis and as a side benefit i noticed my skin is way less hivey/itchy.
LOL maybe I should hire him to help me
@@MissFitAndNerdy lol I’ll let you know if he’s got any recommendations 🤓
How long does it take to "reset" your body if you stop taking anti histamine daily? My doctor told me to use them on a daily base for years, but i felt like they where working less and less. So I stopped taking them daily after your video, but how long would it take my body approx to reset you think?
Honestly I haven't done a lot of research on this. But I've seen people in forums who go through some gnarly withdrawal from it for a few weeks at least but I don't think everyone goes through it that badly. If you're getting bad withdrawal symptoms you could considering tapering off rather than quitting cold turkey
@@MissFitAndNerdy thank you!
I've heard that a lot of people developed MCAS (mast cell activation syndrome) after getting actual cvd and after getting the shot 😫
Have you ever looked into seeing if you are allergic to the sun? My friend is and has to try not to be in the sun often or his skin acts up
My skin gets better when I get more sun
@@MissFitAndNerdyso when you travel and then come back to California is that when you notice it the most, of does it just flare up randomly? Or after you consume certain things?
@@ramayastowell192 It will also flare randomly. I haven't noticed any correlation with any foods.
@@MissFitAndNerdy this is so interesting to me and makes me want to figure out what this could possibly be! Ughh anyways thank you for responding! And I really hope you end up figuring the root cause of the problem, I wish you the best of luck!
What about liver and hormones? That could be it as well ❤
What about it? I don't think it's hormones since I had skin issues for years even before starting menstruation. What exactly do you think I should look into?
I remember advising you years ago to go low histamine. Allthough it does mean cutting caffeine etc
I'm happy to cut caffeine if it helps my skin
Hi castor oil is really good too kind regards from brenda❤
Thank you!
Have you watched anything from Dr. Brook Goldner?
I haven't! I'll look into her
@@MissFitAndNerdy amazing woman!!
All low histamine.
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
My skin looks like when i have a mast cell activation syndrome flare
Do you get other symptoms though too? From everything I've read, no one with MCAS *only* has skin symptoms.
@@MissFitAndNerdy i dont have any other symptoms other then skin issues when it flares. I don't get throat swelling or anything else with it. It took me forever to get diagnosed because I don't have the typical symptoms of it.
It sounds like an auto immune disorder. I’m assuming you’ve seen a dermatologist and looked into biologic medications for psoriasis?
I have celiac disease so yes I do think it could be autoimmune. I’ve seen plenty of dermatologists but I will not be using medication to mask the symptoms (been there, done that, suffered severely for it)
@@MissFitAndNerdy I understand that, I developed psoriasis in the last year at the age of 42 and will only consider biologics as a last resort. I do have pretty classic symptoms of histamine intolerance and MCAS, which tend to flare every couple of months. I take vitamin C religiously and use a DAO supplement when it’s really bad. But the diet is so restrictive that I no longer adhere to it, as I did not experience any changes in my symptoms nor recurrence.
@@Rmed1981 How long did you follow the diet for?
@@MissFitAndNerdy I think the longest stretch was about three months straight, which was hard to maintain. I love my leftovers! But when the HI symptoms are really bad, I can’t really eat much in general, so I naturally stop eating a lot of high histamine foods or histamine liberators.
