My daughter and I did an experiment with stepping up for her spring science project. I had a bunch of tomatoes starts that I had started a little too early. We compared the ones we did not step up, the ones that we stepped up but planted at the same height as they were in the seed tray, and ones that we stepped up and planted deep. They were getting too big to keep them inside. 4 pepper plants went in at the same time and looking great. Going to brag now in case a frost wipes everything out. But I'm hoping the cold is done here in zone 7b.
I used perlite this year. Made a huge difference on the fungus . I used to get it on my seedlings. Guess it's fungus...lol. Cinnamon usually gets rid of it. But the perlite is alot better.
I can vouch that Agro Thrive is good stuff! Peppers and Indeterminates started Jan 20th. Determinates Feb 1st hit them hard with the juice. Transplanted March 1st. Running Agro thrive through drip tape. Strung up my third line on the Florida weave this evening. Starting to set some fruit.
Well...This is me... starting tomato & pepper seeds 2 weeks before my last frost date. But I probably won't plant anything for a month or 6 weeks. So here's to fertilizer! 😂😂😂
I just germinated 2 giant pumpkin seeds I got from another competitive grower that I am going to attempt to grow in my zone 8A heat and humidity of SC for the first time. I'll be watching for your growing tips to see if they can be grown big in our hotter climate.
Ok Mr. Lazy Dog, I got me some fertilizer, I hope it works as good here in Idaho, I know George is very different weather and growing season as I grew up there, I miss it very much (not the bad weather and occasional tornado) but I will always want to go home.. I just started gardening last year in my 50's and I certainly learned so much! I 🤞 for better results than last year, although it really wasn't bad, I harvested enough to get us through the winter which is still here...we will get snow tonight and we might get our 1st 70° day in a week. I am so looking forward to seeing that, got some plants under the grow light in the basement and me and the starts are just praying and waiting..I excited to try out the fertilizer and see how it works out for me..thank you for sharing all your knowledge with all of us.
Seminoles are good tasting pumpkins, I got about 130 pounds from 10 plants last year. The biggest producer I had was Fairytale or Musk de Province, which grew a total of 190 pounds from just 2 plants, they don't taste quite as good but I bet my dog has ate 80 pounds of them.
I am planning to grow some squash this summer. I plant directly in May here but I have yellow squash, crookneck and straight neck, then butternut, pumpkin and a few different kinds of Acorn. I'm hoping to get a harvest from all , we fight the squashbugs here. We are rotating squash to a old garden area that has been resting for about 3 years so hoping between the rotation and neem oil I can keep bugs away
I've been meaning to try the agrothrive right now I'm using Neptune's harvest rose I usually use the tomato and veg formula but it went from $38 to $60 a gallon over night but still had the rose for $38 so I went with that 2 days later it was $58 I can get 2.5 gallons of Agrothrive for that price
I'm probably over doing it this year but for pumpkins I'm growing igor, cronus, polar bear, Jack of hearts, the boss, speckled hound, racer plus, pip squeak, champion, and some gourds lol.
I have 580 tomato plants. I did a "last chance" mass planting of 2015 seeds... after we had an incident last year that got my house up to 133°F for 3 weeks. I assumed that 10% might germanate. I have 580 tomato plants.
In my tiny town, our food pantry relies on my sunny backyard to help feed other struggling families so I'm trying to have a larger garden this year. I'm physically-impaired, so unless I get some help this year...I won't have the strength to properly maintain the size garden needed for the 200% increase of families which I'm sure will get even larger by summer. In other cities where the pantry has a community garden, extra plants like yours are given away when folks pick up their monthly food boxes. Upon moving to my current town, I was saddened when told there's no community garden or even a seed exchange program here. Hence the need of my backyard. I know how grateful I'd be with the germination success you've had. Perhaps your food pantry would find them great purpose or maybe they have a community garden. I planted my taters yesterday. I'm a little late but I bet they'll be fine. 😊 I just bought my giant butternut seeds. I've never competed in one of these but it's on like donkey Kong now! Lol😂😂😂😂
Giant butternut squash is sold out!! I'm only growing moschata types this year so I would like to try your Giant Butternut squash. Let us know when they're back in stock.
I am hoping to get some Seminole Pumpkins seeds started this week.Wife doesn't know it yet but the backyard is fixin" to be a pumpkin patch. But why did you start your seeds in pot and in the ground?
I always like to transplant pumpkins in the spring. But one good reason this year -- my plot isn't ready yet. So I can go ahead and get them going in the greenhouse.
Giant Pumpkin Tip I've been watching a series on growing avocados. Gary, the host, mentioned a technique and as an aside said that it was the same thing used to grow 1000 pound pumpkins; a foliar spray of sugar water. The original recipe was one once each of white sugar fish emulsion, and seaweed in a gallon of water. Just sugar water works as well.
I loove my tatters! tattter tatter. I'm thinking about doing the butternut squash: "Each Giant Butternut Squash plant can produce 8-9 fruits averaging 40 lbs per fruit. That's over 300 lbs of groceries from one plant!" do they really taste good? i grow them to eat em.
Can you do a video on how the fertilizer injector works? I bought all the supplies from drip depot to do drip irrigation this year based on your website guide (thanks for doing that by the way, it was super helpful!) but I was somewhat afraid to buy the fertilizer injector because I don’t fully understand how it works! I couldn’t figure out how to determine the dilution rate or if I need a back flow protector and what disk to use and probably some other things I’m forgetting because I got overwhelmed by what’s probably a super simple device that I’m just over complicating 🙃
I don't think I have any videos showing the setup. We have shown filling it with fertilizer several times, but not exactly sure what videos those were. The instructions included with the injector are actually really good. They explain the flow disc and all that. With an injection system, don't worry too much about the dilution rate. The concept is to "spoon feed" plants at frequent, low doses as opposed to giving them a bunch at one time. When doing an in-ground garden plot, I usually put 8-10 oz in the injector per run for a 1,000 sq. ft. plot.
I would really love an explanation of how to install the fertilizer injector and how it works as well. I have drip tape irrigation and also I am irrigating some pots with micro tubing all with the direction that comes from drip depot. It was pretty simple with their direction . I’m really enjoying your channel Since I live in South Georgia as well but southeast Georgia .Could you help me find a way to buy some of the natures secret fertilizer? I cannot find it here in Saint Marys, Georgia. I discovered Agro Thrive a year or two ago, and absolutely love it. I usually take a watering can and go through my garden with it. It would be so much easier to use an injector. By the way my taters, and my maters are looking good!
@@victoriasutton1021 I get mine from Graco Fertilizer in Cairo, GA. That's probably farther than you want to drive. You might consider contacting the southern sales rep via the Nature Safe website to see if there are any dealers close to you.
I'm always overwatering my seedlings, I wait until the top 2 inches are dry give them some bottom water and then they flop over the next day and die. How do I know when to water cause obviously I'm not doing something right 🤷
I water mine at least once a day to the point where the water is dripping heavily through the bottom of the tray/cells. My goal is to never let them get dry.
Trav how about some pepita's this year. You seem to be a healthy feller. Don't you enjoy some raw pumpkin seeds? The nutritional content of raw pumpkin seeds if off the charts and they store well.
We’re growing our potatoes in recycled cat litter buckets and call them Tidy Tots. I’m sure that would really trigger Grandpa Gordie. My only comment for him is “later Tater.”
We have a saying in Hanover County VA, which has arguably the best tasting tomatoes in the US because of the hot n humid nights in July and August. That saying is " if ya go fast u don't last" Many ways to screw up a tomato plant long term. Too many to list. One of those is accelerating the natural growth cycle. Tomatoes are tastiest and most productive when u let them grow at a natural rate. No different than a fine wine or cannabis plant.
Hey Travis quick question , butternut or giant butternut do they do well in the heat or more cool weather I can’t remember lol, have one year that as great but hard time since. Down in zone 10 b get pretty hot and humid

Probably next week. Been waiting on my onions because that's where the watermelons will be going.
I planted my taters yesterday. I'm a little late but I bet they'll be fine. 😊
I just bought my giant butternut seeds. I've never competed in one of these but it's on like donkey Kong now! Lol😂😂😂😂
Should be fun!
Even if those pumpkins don't taste good to humans , they should be good to make healthy dog treats😊
Giant butternut squash is sold out!! I'm only growing moschata types this year so I would like to try your Giant Butternut squash. Let us know when they're back in stock.
I just added more to the online inventory. I've got another shipment from Ryan coming later this week.
Giant Pumpkin Tip
I've been watching a series on growing avocados. Gary, the host, mentioned a technique and as an aside said that it was the same thing used to grow 1000 pound pumpkins; a foliar spray of sugar water. The original recipe was one once each of white sugar fish emulsion, and seaweed in a gallon of water. Just sugar water works as well.
I didn't realize I missed this video what a shame I am late to the game shame on me.
On another note TATOR TATOR TATOR😂😂😂😂😂 I just could not resist.
Taters, no problem...Okree has been a bit more challenging for me...
Lol.....😂😂😂😂😅😅😅😅😅 poor grandpa.....lol.
I have been curious about how much water you give your starts and how often.
I water mine once a day. And I water to the point where it is dripping heavily from the bottom of the tray.
@@LazyDogFarm i tried that and my bottom leaves started turning yellow.
I've never tried them, but my friend that grows them says they do.
Grandpa Gordie is probably a New York yankee. LOL
I was gifted some giant pumpkins, my worms loved them. I agree I would have to be pretty hungry to eat them. Ps good luck with your taters.😅
Yeah our worms love getting leftover pumpkins.
@@LazyDogFarm Thank you!
Is your red container (the one with your soil in it) from Tractor Supply, or is that an Amazon order? I have the taller ones from TS.
That one is called a "Gorilla Tub." I believe they are sold on Amazon. I also have a couple from Tractor Supply that seem to be of comparable quality.
Shout out to grandpa gordy he made me sub 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Travis , I bought the all the giant seeds but I'm not on Facebook or Instagram can I just send you a picture??
Yeah you can send them to support@lazydogfarm.com
I would like to know what you think of soil blocking?
Takes too long to make them and doesn’t grow a better transplant than the Proptek trays we use.
I'm always overwatering my seedlings, I wait until the top 2 inches are dry give them some bottom water and then they flop over the next day and die. How do I know when to water cause obviously I'm not doing something right 🤷
I just had this same thing happen. Ugh!
I have the worst time starting tomatoes and pepper seeds. 😢
No idea what the problem is.
@Jasmine Street Farm no it's not that, the tops get floppy and flop over from the top
I water mine at least once a day to the point where the water is dripping heavily through the bottom of the tray/cells. My goal is to never let them get dry.
Taters, Maters, and Okree. Maybe you can't talk right according to Grandpa but you can most certainly grow groceries and show us how.
Trav how about some pepita's this year. You seem to be a healthy feller. Don't you enjoy some raw pumpkin seeds? The nutritional content of raw pumpkin seeds if off the charts and they store well.
I never have eaten many pumpkin seeds. I'm not opposed to them, but just haven't had many for whatever reason.
We’re growing our potatoes in recycled cat litter buckets and call them Tidy Tots. I’m sure that would really trigger Grandpa Gordie. My only comment for him is “later Tater.”
RIP Grandpa Gordie
It's been so hot during the days 90ish and no rain. I've had to water everyday and my taters are starting to droop and get yellowish. Any tips?
Just give them a splash every day when it's hot and dry. That's all you can do.
I'm about to grow 10 acres of butternut squash just to win lol
I can’t find ur video about irritating the fig trees??? Can u tell me where to find it? I remember u using the tube drip tape. Is that right?
Here you go: ua-cam.com/video/ODbx6durE9Q/v-deo.html
If "taters" bothers you wait until the "maters" are ready to pick.
I don't know the Variety of my Button it squash but I am growing it For the 1st time
We have a saying in Hanover County VA, which has arguably the best tasting tomatoes in the US because of the hot n humid nights in July and August. That saying is " if ya go fast u don't last"
Many ways to screw up a tomato plant long term. Too many to list. One of those is accelerating the natural growth cycle. Tomatoes are tastiest and most productive when u let them grow at a natural rate. No different than a fine wine or cannabis plant.
Here in south GA all tomatoes are usually toast by mid to late July. So we need to push ours to get the production we need before that happens.
Hey Travis quick question , butternut or giant butternut do they do well in the heat or more cool weather I can’t remember lol, have one year that as great but hard time since. Down in zone 10 b get pretty hot and humid
If you live in the south, it's best to get them planted early in the spring. They won't care for our mid to late summer temps.
@@LazyDogFarm ok thanks yea it’s already having mid to upper 80 some 92 days ( record heat)
10B SWFL
Do you ever plant by moon phase?
I don't.
I like creamy tater soup 🍲 , with cornbread, a piece of onion 🌰 , and sweet tea 🍵 !
