      I have been using LMNT for 9 months and love the stuff. I mix a sleeve with 32 oz. Prefer the orange, second the raspberry. They recently came out with a Hot mix, Loved the Chocolate Raspberry. Mixed the hot one in a large coffee mug, not diluted to 32 oz.

    Last year I soaked my garlic with pretty good results. This year I planted some unsoaked garlic as a test to see if it makes much of a difference. I am a self sustainable gardener, do not purchase any fertilizers. Soaked my garlic in a worm casting/compost extract and a couple quarts of fermented comfrey tea, smelled lovely, lol. In each hole before planting the garlic, a handful of worm castings. What was interesting was my planting got interrupted for a few days, so I stored the soaked garlic cloves in a bucket of worm castings, when I went to plant the remaining cloves, roots were already sprouting.
    Happy holidays ! Seay Well !!!!

    FWIW, I came across a video about planting garlic around fruit trees for a tastier yield and to deter pests. You don’t harvest the garlic but leave it there for its benefits to the tree. I’m trying it this year since all my apples all had bore holes from something eating them. And also planted some garlic in my strawberry patch as an experiment too.

      yes, and thats why people mash some garlic and make it into somekind of paste and put some into the water, idk the formula. but the thing is, that garlic water liquid, can be organic instecticide. bugs don't want to eat plants because of that garlic aroma

      Just like that hydrogen peroxide BS, it's a huge myth as well. You hear that planting garlic will help against peach leaf curl. It's totally untrue. Leaf curl is due to bad types of peach trees for your soil, or a soil that's too wet, too compact, as peach trees hate that (and in that case just don't grow peaches). But very often, a peach tree will show leaf curl the first few years and be fine after. So the myth probably came up like that : some people planted garlic the second year after seeing leaf curl the first year. And then the third year the tree just got better on its own, and gardeners thought it was the garlic... which it wasn't. I have heavy clay. Peach trees don't work and have leaf curls every year. Some people tried the classic myths in the garden : a ton of garlic all around for 2 years. It did absolutely NOTHING. Even the egg shells hanged up on the branches (yeah a real stupid myth but someone wanted to try...) and of course it did nothing either. What DOES help trees is... all kinds of plants. The more diversity you have, the better it is for plant health in general. But like I said if your soil is wrong, it's wrong, not much you can do.

    Okay Epic guys, I’ve followed your instructions for 3 years and finally this summer I grew some nickel size cloves. They had the cutest cloves about the size of a chickeydee’s little claw. 😂 But I was so happy to finally see a head develop from a clove. So this year I rushed to your store and ordered whatever kind you have. I hope “Epic Eric” blessed the bulbs before mailing cause this is THE year. If I get useless heads I will move on. If I’m blessed with real garlic heads I’ll buy a birdie bed like yours (when on sale of course). Love. Your encouragement guys, you seem to know I failed. 😢

    Good advice on planting only big cloves. Over 12 years of growing garlic have proven that is 100% true for me. I use floating row cover to keep our squirrels from digging in my garlic and planting walnuts. I do doubt hydrogen peroxide will kill white rot, since its invades inside the clove. That's why its good to only grow certified seed garlic. I have replanted clean garlic from my own crop, as I have never gotten white rot here. But I am a home grower and I wouldn't plant anything but certified seed if I was growing it commercially. I also plant in clean potting soil that has never grown any onions, leeks, or garlic before.

This was before UA-cam made it extremely popular. She would be amazed if she was living to see the many different garden styles and methods being used today. I think especially the no till would be very intriguing to my mother! Rototilling that she did was more of a problem than a benefit according to some garden UA-camrs!

    I actually put a cover crop of mustard, peas and oats over the garlic bed right after planting last year. Everything grew happily together, including the garlic. The cover died here mid January, after which we covered with leaves and let it be. We had amazing garlic this year, so I'm definitely repeating with a cover this year. But I ran out if peas and oats, so I just threw a bunch of seeds for various winter greens in. Edible cover crop ftw!

      Hi from Virginia, My climate might not be quite as warm as yours, but it's pretty similar. November is the perfect time to plant garlic outside, in a grow bag, raised bed, or other garden soil. The cloves will have the winter time to root and fill out a bit and they will take off in the spring. By May or so, the upper leaves will start to turn brown which is when you can harvest. Hope this helps.

    I used these techniques today to plant a 4×4 raised bed. Three different varieties of soft neck that have been in the fridge for over 6 weeks. I put the best and largest 64 cloves into the bed and had a couple dozen small ones left that I planted in a couple other places I had a little space. I've never been successful with garlic, but never really had a clue what the problem was. Mainly the varieties and no vernalization.

      Good luck! This is my second year. My first, it was the first thing I planted (got the house end of June) and we had a huge chipmunk problem...I knew they got some of them, but it turns out they took every last one. This year, the chipmunk population has been reduced but I put them under bird netting. Before I did...yep, groundhog got in there and took some. Not sure how many of the 18 cloves I planted he got. Then my neighbor gave me some sprouting garlic he decided he didn't have room for, so now I have three varieties (Trader Joe's organic whatever that is, "European garlic" people have been growing in my neighborhood for about a decade, and something random he couldn't remember the name of. I planted crimson clover as a cover crop for it and will put some marigolds in there come spring.

      I soaked mine in Neptune's Harvest tomato and veg, which is my go to for regular veggie use throughout the year. And at time of planting I used blood meal, compost, and worm castings. I planned to get some more Milorganite and amend the beds with that, but didn't get around to it. So likely that will be one of the first things I do this Spring when I see growth again. They love that nitrogen. I'm also Zone 5b and I think I planted right around the same time as you. End of October is usually when it's done, but the weather has been a bit weird the past few years. I buy my garlic from Keene Garlic and they recommend the same tips as this video.

It’s my first time so I’m following your instructions - except I didn’t have my bed built ahead of time and the only time I’ve been able to get it is in the last half hour before sunset (it was easy enough to do, just…life not giving me much time right now). I’m hoping to get the garlic in the ground tomorrow as soon as I can, but it will have been soaking in the fertilizer mix (it wasn’t full strength fertilizer? But diluted in a 5 gallon bucket, and not as much as was recommended on the bottle - so I’m really hoping I didn’t just ruin all the garlic 😂) for about 2 days at that point. Crossing my fingers hard that I didn’t screw it up too badly

It was so intense that it prevented the bulb from fully forming, or sometimes the plant was so depleted by the rust that no bulb formed at all. Great video. 🧄 I planted hardneck garlic and hope I get a great harvest in 2025. Didn't know about soaking them in fertlizer. For 2026 hopefully I'll try an experiment one half soaked garlic and another without.

    • @stephaniegee227
      @stephaniegee227 2 місяці тому

      Older as well. You can buy the really tall beds that take a TON of filling OR you could buy a regular type bed up on legs. Both cost more, but can be a huge lifesaver if you have back issues.

      Epic Gardening sells Birdies brand beds in a tall version. We added them little by little and it has made a difference as compared to our lower, wooden beds.

      @@retroqueenbeeart I'm fairly certain Epic Hardening has videos on how to fill a new tall raised bed cheaply. The short version is that the bottom of the bed can be filled with split logs or branches or the like plus chopped-up brush and/or autumn leaves; the "good stuff" into which you'll be planting - raised bed mix, or soil plus compost, or something of the like with suitable amendments - occupies the top. During and after each growing season the soil level will settle as the stuff underneath begins to decompose, and during each planting season the bed can be topped up with more good stuff to get it back up to level before planting.

    • @goatkidmom
      @goatkidmom 2 місяці тому +1

      That's an interesting question. I thought a little green above each clove was supposed to be normal. We don't usually get a hard freeze until around Christmas. During October and November my garlic puts up small leaves, usually around 6", and then it quits growing throughout the colder months of mid December to February and into late March, when it resumes growing. I thought the young green leaves would produce chlorophyll which would encourage root growth during the freeze/thaw cycles in winter. That's an interesting thought though. I struggle a bit with small bulb size at harvest. I tried extra fertilizer this year; I'm waiting to see how it comes out.

    I left some bulbs in the ground forgetting to harvest them. They’ve now sprouted roots a little and I’m going to plant them anyway instead of the garlic I harvested when I should have and dried. Wish me luck. :) I’ve done well planting this late the last 2 years. Western Oregon winters aren’t overly harsh, but it’s a lot of cold and wet for a while.

    Disinfecting the garlic is a smart idea. But breaking down the 'dirty' garlic over the bed you are going to plant in seems like a great way to reintroduce the same pests and illnesses. Especially because it seems they left al good chunk of papers on the street side of the bed. I would be interested to see if that side of the bed suffers from more issues later in the growing season.

      Eat, dehydrate, preserve in oil or honey. I did not like the preserving in honey. They ferment, and about halfway through the smell is horrible. I guess that resolves itself i hear but I couldn't handle it.

      Garlic starts pre-order and shipping most places in Sept/Oct, since most places it needs to be planted already. So yeah you're likely out of luck unless you can find some still at a hardware store or something. However I checked Keene Organics and they have some Vietnamese Red small/culinary garlic still available. Maybe some others if you call/email them? I know they also offer "seconds" and cloves that are already broken up from storage and they sell that in batches at the end of the season. Not sure if they have any of those left either.
