Both singleplayer and multiplayer games aren't fun anymore for me I'm general. But I still play multiplayer games for the dopamine hit, even though it feels like bot matches sometimes when no one talks. (Halo, CoD, Gears Etc)

I work 12-14 hours a day, 5 days a week. I still hit the gym 3-4 times a week and on top of that I’m a husband and a father. I don’t have the patience or the time to grind out battle passes and other BS. I just want to log in play for an hour or two a day and that’s all. I miss the old days of cod when the focus was on having fun and unlocking the gold skin as I play.
Fr bro cod isn’t fun because I can’t relax playing cod even when I’m doing good on a match I’m having to focus so hard I loose my original chill vibe and I’m put in a bad mood
I’m in the same situation wife, career, 2 young kids (2 and 4), so free time is extremely limited. Also, one of the big reasons I don’t play much multiplayer anymore is that most of my buddies are in the same stage of life and it’s nearly impossible to get all of us together at the same time to game.
Try some Arma! COD is designed for children which is probably why it doesn't seem fun. And all that obnoxious monetization really has a negative effect on a game with the artificial grind and such. Find some that don't incorporate that kind of design philosophy.
As someone who's in my 30s and is addicted to multi-player online gaming, ive recently started to slow down. Idk if it's cause I'm older, or because MP game practices suck or whatever. Ive recently gotten back into playing single player games. Ghost of Tsushima, specifically. Its nice to slow down and play other things. Great video homie
I think the volume is an issue too. There are a lot more games to play, and most of them are garbage. But a lot of them aren't garbage. The good ones are probably more numerous than most people think they are.
I wouldn't even say most of them are garbage, it's just generally the ones that are receiving the most marketing are also the most bloated and uninspired a lot of the time. To find your niche you just have to look harder, dig a little
I think a big issue is also availability. I am one of the many that has a backlog I may never finish even though I am chipping at it. Thing is, childhood me would have laughed if I told them they would have too many games in the future. As a kid, I didn't get new games outside of Birthdays and Christmas really, only weekend rentals sometimes. I didn't have many games but I learned to appreciate them to the fullest. When you have access to hundreds of games instantly, it's overwhelming and can even spoil one into feeling like it's an obligation, not a hobby you enjoy in your free time.
yes , and I have a bad habit of constantly switching games , I spend most of my gaming time uninstalling one game and installing something which feels good at the moment but the moment its done downloading , the hype for the game dies and I repeat the cycle
For some my older consoles, I only had maybe 10 or so games for them and I enjoyed every single one. Now, I can literally buy really any game I want and have no interest
@@Harrry_03 I've started making a list of games I think of and want to play. Then I order them from the order I'd like to play them the most. This way I'm not overwhelmed by hundreds of games in my library but rather a dozen I remember on top of mind.
If you aren't enjoying games, I recommend diving into other important aspects of life. After an 8 hour day of work and responsibilities to my wife and son, it feels like a reward. Playing in the middle of the day when I could be doing household chores and projects feels gratuitous and unfulfilling.
It's Saturday, I have the whole weekend to myself as my wife and daughter are away. I'm in the middle of a full house cleaning. After i finish and sit down in all these refreshing smells i get bombarded by all sensations. Visual, audio, tactile and now smell. It's the best way to enjoy gaming as an adult when you have so many chores. Also, not having unlimited times means now I only play what I like the most which helps gaming not getting boring
I was also a mountainbiker from when I was a kid, but gamer for a bit longer. Worked for Chain Reactiom Cycles for over a decade, got injured during that time abd ended up playing a lot of dark souls and DayZ - those games became the only things I really play to this day. Me and a bunch of friends have restored a bunch of windows 98 battle stations. We meet up once or twice a year and play OG StarCraft, Quake III and Red alert 2. It is still just as fun as I remember them. Perhaps even more fun, because time is so much more valuable and scarce now.
At 33 I find when i dont have a game i really want to play is when its best time to start something productive, since i dont have a strong temptation to drop it and just play games instead. Then when you're doing something productive, your desire for gaming bounces back pretty hard in my experience.
I stick with Infinite and MCC for my multiplayer fix, but then play a bunch of other single player games to keep things fresh and give me variety. I don’t have the time to sink into a different multiplayer game, but I can sink time into single player games that I can play for a while, beat it, and then move on.
Interesting points.....for me personally I always fall out and back in love with gaming. I have certain games that when I suffer gaming limbo, I gravitate back to which reignite my passion with the hobby.
Nah, the issue is a lot deeper than "Duh, you're old now, kek". The games nowadays aren't made with art in mind but profit. Thus majority of them are just a list to be checked out by the commitee and only when a real gem like Baldur's gate 3 or Elden ring comes you'll love gaming again, responsibility or not.

One thing about being burned out by games is that we fuck our brains up by being on tiktok, instagram, UA-cam (guilty), listening to music, playing games, watching TV etc. To a point where we don't find as much enjoyment in our favourite hobby even if there was enough time
I was getting fully burnt out a couple years ago and the thing that revived my interest in gaming was achievements before I never even payed attention to them but when I played dead island 2 at launch the game was fairly short and when I finished it I felt like playing more so I decided to 100% the achievements and ever since then I've been trying new games and either once I'm done or during my playthrough I try to do all achievements with the exception of a lot of older games multiplayer stuff as of course many of those are unobtainable now but honestly having that goal has kept me way more invested in so many games recently and finishing the achievements also helps me move on from a game and find something else since I'm "Done" and am less likely to stay playing the same game and end up burnt out on it.
Totally agree. After finishing the base Final Shape expansion I paused Destiny 2 for a while and have finally played God of War 2018, Doom Eternal both DLCs and got back into Sekiro

I said all the same things until recently, where gaming just ISN'T fun to me anymore. With bills, family, career, etc. on my mind, even in my FREE time, I just don't get enjoyment out of sitting around wasting the day on a game :/ it really sucks, because with all of my being I just want to sit down and game. But when I do, there just isn't the "feel good" feeling that used to come with it.

I tried to rotate between 5 or so games. Playing one game all the time. I get bored real fast. Also, being a lone wolf gamer is a very sad time. Quickest easiest way to find a group of people to play. Besides, joining a discord server is using the Xbox "looking for a group" feature in the Xbox bar. Not many PC users use this feature and it's very underrated.

I believe while it may be connected, our resulting creation of bad life habits (e.g. less sleep/ sleep deprevation, comparing yourself to others on instagram) are responsible for a general devaluation of ourselfs in terms of selfworth and acceptance/ happiness.

I turned off trophy notifications on my PSN account. It was relieving to just play a game and enjoy it for what it was. And my playing not be dictated by a trophy that doesn't actually matter to me.

Variety is so important. If you stick to shooters it’s eventually going to get old. Last year I’ve tried JRPGs after not playing them such I was a kid and I can’t stop playing them now. Always have an open mind with gaming escape the comfort zones!
I took a long hiatus from gaming when I got into high school, around 2001. I didn’t get back into the hobby until 2020, so 19 years. I missed so many classics I really enjoyed catching up and figuring out my new tastes in genres. The past 4 years have been awesome, and a lot of fun. I’m back into the hobby bigger than ever. There are so many amazing games out there, and so many ways to discover new experiences. I think gaming is better than ever.
After pandemic, I stuck up to competitive games (FPS GAMES) such overwatch and csgo, I reached the 'Burnout' phase, since then I don't really enjoy games that much, it is like a routine I have to do. Unfortunately, last time I truly enjoyed playing video game was in January 2021 when i started playing Cyberpunk 2077. You are right, sometimes you must take a break for weeks then come back playing games.
My biggest issue was the same issue that all of those “Gaming is Dead” videos have in common, and you sorta pointed it out by noting the burnout is coming from playing the same type of game. But really, it’s modern online shooters. Now they’re built in collaboration with psychologists to optimize engagement and retention. They don’t feel fun because they no longer are programmed to BE fun. Not because you got old. Redirect your attention and free time into different genres of online multiplayer if you still want that competitive itch scratched. I rediscovered my love for fighting games after years and years off of them. There’s so many of them now, too. Rediscover your love for single player. Single player stories used to carry so many of us through our youth. And guess what? They still can. Elden Ring helped me realize that I still love video games. I’m also going back and playing so many games that I missed. Take a hard break from the instant dopamine hit of shooters. And when you do get back into them, fix your gaming ratios. I went from 90% COD / 10% everything else, to 10% COD and 90% everything else. My mental health has drastically improved.
Was just chatting with my buddy about how Gears of War really was the peak era. A great story campaign with Couch or Online Co-op + a supported multiplayer with skins you could earn from playing + a Horde mode all right on launch!

I've been gaming basically since the beginning. I remember when Tetris came out. I've never gotten to the point where I thought games weren't fun anymore, though there are plenty of times where life took over and I wasn't playing video games much. I think games now are the best they've ever been, but maybe that's because I don't generally play Live-Service games. Those kinds of games have to be really special to draw me in, and most of them aren't.
Nice video dragoon! I am in my early twenties and I have to say that this is true. I am not highly intrigued by games nowadays as much as I was in the past. For that, I try genres and titles that I haven't experienced in the past. Finnaly, I have lost any interest in multiplayer games, they are so tyring, except co-op games with company.
I recently went through this mindset, and taking a break really helped me. I have always just purchased a new game playing for an hour and putting the game down. But now, after the break I cleaned up my steam library, and I feel myself enjoying games again. Would also recommend backlogged :)
In recent years, I started enjoying smaller experiences. Something that I could play start to finish in like 2-3 days. Gives you the chance to mix it up and try different types of games. More recently, I've been enjoying the free monthly games on PSN too. A lot of these end up being games I hadn't heard of before or wouldn't choose to play on my own. A Plague Tale Requiem was an unexpected gem. And I tried my first ever rougelike in Skul: The Hero Slayer. Another thing I've stopped doing is trying to do EVERYTHING a game has to offer. For years, I've tried 100%ing games, only to burn myself out on that game and never go back to it. When I play TotK, I played through the main story and hardly did any side quests. Now, I'm thinking of breaking it out again and checking them out, as well as playing around more with building stuff
Every time I feel burnt out I just play dark souls 1 again and that fixes everything. Sometimes you just need a quick refresher with a classic to get back on top of things.
Great video, as someone who also grew up in the late SNES, N64, PS2 era I find that just in the past like year games have been less appealing. To me its more about the type of games though, the new Ratchet on PS5 was awesome, Elden ring as big as it maybe is not my thing, but most live service games are just not appealing like they used to be even though there is more of them. Example Battlefield 1 was amazing...the new ones just don't seem as good. Got burned out on Apex Legends and Overwatch didn't even bother with the 2nd one. I am looking forward to the new Black Ops though as that looks like it might bring something fresh to the table hopefully.

Modern gaming is an absolute sludgepit, for sure. But we also have a lot of stuff I could only dream of as a kid. I can play with people, even if they're on switch. We get actually decent PC ports, and we have more people gaming than any before. Those little good bits are atleast something to look forward to. And I totally agree about diversified hobbies. Even just watching movies or shows is a good way to break things up.
Tbh i was a online player from cod to 2k rainbow six siege gta etc wasn’t burned out but definitely was getting to it i opened my mind nd wallet and bought games like spiderman ghosts of tsuama god of war last of us and tried new online fighting games like ufc and undisputed i now game more then i was back then
For me theres not really any option to step back or take a break from gaming. Its one of the only things I have to look forward to, and despite several desperate attempts to get into different hobbies or find different interests, nothing else connects with me to the same extent. I spend all my time working, then come home just to sit on my computer staring at my screen before giving up because I have no desire to play or do anything. Medications haven't helped, therapy hasn't helped. Life just feels completely empty and devoid of anything enjoyable enough to justify it.

The one trend I see with the "games aren't fun anymore" crowd is they usually play either shooters or mobas. I think it is just a bad era for (good) multiplayer shooters and mobas have always been mobas. It is a skill issue, the games I play I still like at most as I have gotten older I have gotten pickier so I basically rarely play single player titles anymore because I just wanna play Rivals of Aether or something
While the gaming industry has its own issues, I think there are also a lot of great games being released. And I think people who usually claim that modern games are bad are either focus only on negativity and, like you said, don't want to try new things or they only enjoy playing specific genres that might not be in a good state rn (fair, but that's not the whole gaming). AAA might not be doing well right now, but indie and AA are having great time. I guess what the real issue might be is how there are so many of new games and people are overwhelmed by it. So even if there are a lot of good games coming out, people can't decide or it's just too time consuming to find something. But I'll add one more thing to your suggestion of trying something new. Go back and look for acclaimed classic games that people praised to be one of the best. I bet there are quite enough of them that people have yet to try. Like if you want to play something different but overwhelmed by new games, then look back to the past years. Not even necessarily too old, just look for "best of this genre, great games you haven't heard of" or whatever.

Video game industry should return to its roots. Single player games, no multiplayer cash grabbing awful games. Allocate all their resources there. And everything will be normal again (Red Dead Redemption 2 for example)

feel like he might maybe record gameplay from the actual games, otherwise ye just looking up gameplay of these games and then crediting the maker if its not free use/copyright free definitely a tricky content style to nail, but like most things taking the time to try and do it always gets you somewhere!
It's my own gameplay, I record and catalog things to use for videos like these. Since about 2019 I've tried to archive and keep most gameplay I capture (not all) but in case I need to get clips from lets say Bioshock or Portal or something. For everything in this video though I've played/recorded the clips for this in the last 3 or 4 months

Not to mention, almost all online games are flooded with the next generation below us. The ones whos nervous system developed with controllers in-hand from very young ages. I think that's a point not many people are making. People that are 25-35+ currently, didn't play games the way the kids do now, nor did we start as early in our body's development. There really is no competing with someone who's been playing fortnite since they were 4 years old. We are the mid-generation sufferers. Sure there were 'video-games' when we were kids, but they weren't like todays games. youngsters only know todays games, and that'll be every generation moving forward.
I'm special needs so all I do is play games since I was removed from school in 7th grade I'm 34 now and games got me though some tough times but I'm losing my will to live
I think this sentiment mainly comes from people who only playing the big games, COD, Apex, fortnite, Destiny Madden, anything with battlepass. Theyve made it a chore to keep up with the game.
I play video games since the late 80s, and for me, almost all modern AAA games nowdays arent fun at all, but (and this is a huge BUT) theres a Souls series I really enjoy and cant tired of it, tons of retro style metroidvanias, remakes of great games of the past and lots of classic retro games even from the NES / SNES era I wasnt played back in the days. Yes, theres a lot of problem with the game industry today, but if you couldnt find games to enjoy in 2024, then find another hobby.
Just finished my tactician run in BG3 and I have played this year FF7R, Stellar Blade, Dave the Diver, Dredge, Robocop, AC Mirage, Fallout 76 (from zero to platinum), more than 200 hours of FF14, Immortals of Aveum, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and some Helldivers 2. I sincerely cannot understand where all this gloom comes from. And we are having AC Shadows, Space Marines 2, Astro. Of course, I don't touch any competitive multiplayer bs, that thing is pure cancer, I wish people stopped wasteing money on that idiocy.
ive tried some of those games but i just didnt like them. I can appreciate the development work on BG3 i just didnt like it. Ff7remake i got on sale but it was very cringy and i hated the combat. Dave rhe diver felt very repetitive for me. I kinda just stopped playing video games cause all the supposed good games just werent very good imo
Try out Alan Wake 2 as well, it came out in 2023 and it has a super good story. Not too hopeful on AC Shadows, but I think Space Marines 2 will be really good.
It’s because most of those games don’t do anything that fresh or new in terms of gameplay. Ppl that are tired of games are definitely ppl that played lots of games for at least 10 or 15 years. We’ve experienced many of these games gameplay types several times already. And there’s some gamers like yourself that never seem to get tired of similar gameplay which is fine. That kind of attitude also makes it easier to make a UA-cam career off of gaming.
I actually tried getting out of my comfort zone because of the burnout and I discovered my love for fighting games and JRPGs. Like Persona. I never thought that I'd ever touch Persona, I always dismissed it as just some cringe weeb trash, but now I consider P5 as one of my favorite games in general. But besides trying different things, sometimes just going back to the good old classics that I used to be in love with long ago is also good enough to get me back in the mood.
I think another issue with games today that can contribute to the feeling they aren't fun? The nitty gritty meta of the game world you could call "politics". The horrible things companies are accused of doing. The news of what's going on behind the dev's doors. The fandoms and the things they do. If you are on social media a lot it's hard to not get drawn into cancel culture and outrage. And, I speak from experience, you won't even realize it's affecting you at first. I started feeling weird playing certain games by certain devs. I started getting the urge to do background checks on them. To make sure they weren't problematic. One reason gaming when you were younger feels better is that you just didn't know about any of that stuff. A game was just a game and a developer was just that company that made the game.
For me my favorite genre of game is pvp FPS. There is 0 doubt in my mind that the overwhelming majority of the games in the genre are not fun anymore. The live service model, the algorithims that place you into matches based on "skill", and the absolutely insane aim assist controllers get in some of these games with no way for me to only play against M&K users has ruined them. I used to love games like CoD, Apex, and Siege but they changed and turned into something I no longer enjoy. Even thematically I can hardly believe the change in art direction for some of these games with really weird goofy comestics being added like rappers and fantasy characters. Thankfully Titanfall 2 has comeback from the grave because otherwise I don't think I could get my pvp fps fix.

Those are just off the top of my head but if people can’t enjoy gaming then you need to stop playing for like a year and then come back and fall in love.

Most arent, the industry has gone to shit. Same stale formulas since 2000, just improved graphics, more money into the art design, and we still get 20 farm cozy games and 30 turn based rpg, because nobody knows how to do proper fresh ideas.
People dont do enough research to find good games. Stop stuffing your backlog with game series that have been around for 11 years+ and you think are bad now. Its not worth it compared to the wealth of Indies you can find for cheap to play. My most anticipated sequels right now are for Cat Quest and YS.
Modern gaming is not fun, it’s feel like a second job, triple AAA has been exposed for the buzz word that it is. Indie title and small studios are doing great. Project zombiod, mount and blade both war band and bannerlord are games I want to waste my time on.

I personally am just ready and waiting for either AI enimies, ai generated maps/worlds and or a hub like Ready Player One and Sword Art Online. Games need to stop dropping new Content and focus on conmecting all of their old games into one big world and make it a multiplayer experience with the option to solo. So all gta games would be on one map. All pokemon games would be on one map ect ect for every franchise that would sign up for this giant United Nations of Video games. Then they should work on combining companies like Sprint and T-mobile did and make a super company. Call it The Society Project or something idk there could literally be a president of the digital multiverse with player based elections. I find it redundant to have so many games that are based around one Niche when they could work together to put all of their mechanics into one game then invision one world where all games exist. In a world like that, you'd probably get paid in game via bitcoin or some form of digital payout you can transfer to real dollars, inspiring people to really travel the world catching pokemon or bounty hunting other players because someone killed them and wants to pay fot their head. With Ai taking so many jobs and plans to leave to Mars and talks of wars i feel like it'd be a leap in the right direction. Gaming companies are just a shadow of what they could be. We could use a super comany that isn't afraid to push the limitations on imagination

I work 12-14 hours a day, 5 days a week. I still hit the gym 3-4 times a week and on top of that I’m a husband and a father. I don’t have the patience or the time to grind out battle passes and other BS. I just want to log in play for an hour or two a day and that’s all. I miss the old days of cod when the focus was on having fun and unlocking the gold skin as I play.
Fr bro cod isn’t fun because I can’t relax playing cod even when I’m doing good on a match I’m having to focus so hard I loose my original chill vibe and I’m put in a bad mood
I’m in the same situation wife, career, 2 young kids (2 and 4), so free time is extremely limited. Also, one of the big reasons I don’t play much multiplayer anymore is that most of my buddies are in the same stage of life and it’s nearly impossible to get all of us together at the same time to game.
Try some Arma! COD is designed for children which is probably why it doesn't seem fun. And all that obnoxious monetization really has a negative effect on a game with the artificial grind and such. Find some that don't incorporate that kind of design philosophy.

I think the volume is an issue too. There are a lot more games to play, and most of them are garbage. But a lot of them aren't garbage. The good ones are probably more numerous than most people think they are.
I wouldn't even say most of them are garbage, it's just generally the ones that are receiving the most marketing are also the most bloated and uninspired a lot of the time. To find your niche you just have to look harder, dig a little
I think a big issue is also availability. I am one of the many that has a backlog I may never finish even though I am chipping at it. Thing is, childhood me would have laughed if I told them they would have too many games in the future. As a kid, I didn't get new games outside of Birthdays and Christmas really, only weekend rentals sometimes. I didn't have many games but I learned to appreciate them to the fullest. When you have access to hundreds of games instantly, it's overwhelming and can even spoil one into feeling like it's an obligation, not a hobby you enjoy in your free time.

For some my older consoles, I only had maybe 10 or so games for them and I enjoyed every single one. Now, I can literally buy really any game I want and have no interest

After an 8 hour day of work and responsibilities to my wife and son, it feels like a reward. Playing in the middle of the day when I could be doing household chores and projects feels gratuitous and unfulfilling.
It's Saturday, I have the whole weekend to myself as my wife and daughter are away. I'm in the middle of a full house cleaning. After i finish and sit down in all these refreshing smells i get bombarded by all sensations. Visual, audio, tactile and now smell. It's the best way to enjoy gaming as an adult when you have so many chores. Also, not having unlimited times means now I only play what I like the most which helps gaming not getting boring
I was also a mountainbiker from when I was a kid, but gamer for a bit longer. Worked for Chain Reactiom Cycles for over a decade, got injured during that time abd ended up playing a lot of dark souls and DayZ - those games became the only things I really play to this day.

Me and a bunch of friends have restored a bunch of windows 98 battle stations. We meet up once or twice a year and play OG StarCraft, Quake III and Red alert 2. It is still just as fun as I remember them. Perhaps even more fun, because time is so much more valuable and scarce now.
At 33 I find when i dont have a game i really want to play is when its best time to start something productive, since i dont have a strong temptation to drop it and just play games instead. Then when you're doing something productive, your desire for gaming bounces back pretty hard in my experience.

I stick with Infinite and MCC for my multiplayer fix, but then play a bunch of other single player games to keep things fresh and give me variety. I don’t have the time to sink into a different multiplayer game, but I can sink time into single player games that I can play for a while, beat it, and then move on.
Interesting points.....for me personally I always fall out and back in love with gaming. I have certain games that when I suffer gaming limbo, I gravitate back to which reignite my passion with the hobby.

Nah, the issue is a lot deeper than "Duh, you're old now, kek". The games nowadays aren't made with art in mind but profit. Thus majority of them are just a list to be checked out by the commitee and only when a real gem like Baldur's gate 3 or Elden ring comes you'll love gaming again, responsibility or not.

One thing about being burned out by games is that we fuck our brains up by being on tiktok, instagram, UA-cam (guilty), listening to music, playing games, watching TV etc. To a point where we don't find as much enjoyment in our favourite hobby even if there was enough time
I was getting fully burnt out a couple years ago and the thing that revived my interest in gaming was achievements before I never even payed attention to them but when I played dead island 2 at launch the game was fairly short and when I finished it I felt like playing more so I decided to 100% the achievements and ever since then I've been trying new games and either once I'm done or during my playthrough I try to do all achievements with the exception of a lot of older games multiplayer stuff as of course many of those are unobtainable now but honestly having that goal has kept me way more invested in so many games recently and finishing the achievements also helps me move on from a game and find something else since I'm "Done" and am less likely to stay playing the same game and end up burnt out on it.

I tried to rotate between 5 or so games. Playing one game all the time. I get bored real fast. Also, being a lone wolf gamer is a very sad time. Quickest easiest way to find a group of people to play. Besides, joining a discord server is using the Xbox "looking for a group" feature in the Xbox bar. Not many PC users use this feature and it's very underrated.

I turned off trophy notifications on my PSN account. It was relieving to just play a game and enjoy it for what it was. And my playing not be dictated by a trophy that doesn't actually matter to me.

Variety is so important. If you stick to shooters it’s eventually going to get old. Last year I’ve tried JRPGs after not playing them such I was a kid and I can’t stop playing them now.

I took a long hiatus from gaming when I got into high school, around 2001. I didn’t get back into the hobby until 2020, so 19 years. I missed so many classics I really enjoyed catching up and figuring out my new tastes in genres. The past 4 years have been awesome, and a lot of fun. I’m back into the hobby bigger than ever. There are so many amazing games out there, and so many ways to discover new experiences. I think gaming is better than ever.

After pandemic, I stuck up to competitive games (FPS GAMES) such overwatch and csgo, I reached the 'Burnout' phase, since then I don't really enjoy games that much, it is like a routine I have to do. Unfortunately, last time I truly enjoyed playing video game was in January 2021 when i started playing Cyberpunk 2077. You are right, sometimes you must take a break for weeks then come back playing games.
Replaying Witcher 3 after beating Hogwarts Legacy and I'm having a great time.
My biggest issue was the same issue that all of those “Gaming is Dead” videos have in common, and you sorta pointed it out by noting the burnout is coming from playing the same type of game. But really, it’s modern online shooters. Now they’re built in collaboration with psychologists to optimize engagement and retention. They don’t feel fun because they no longer are programmed to BE fun. Not because you got old.
Redirect your attention and free time into different genres of online multiplayer if you still want that competitive itch scratched. I rediscovered my love for fighting games after years and years off of them. There’s so many of them now, too.
Rediscover your love for single player. Single player stories used to carry so many of us through our youth. And guess what? They still can. Elden Ring helped me realize that I still love video games. I’m also going back and playing so many games that I missed.
Take a hard break from the instant dopamine hit of shooters. And when you do get back into them, fix your gaming ratios. I went from 90% COD / 10% everything else, to 10% COD and 90% everything else. My mental health has drastically improved.
Was just chatting with my buddy about how Gears of War really was the peak era. A great story campaign with Couch or Online Co-op + a supported multiplayer with skins you could earn from playing + a Horde mode all right on launch!

I've been gaming basically since the beginning. I remember when Tetris came out. I've never gotten to the point where I thought games weren't fun anymore, though there are plenty of times where life took over and I wasn't playing video games much. I think games now are the best they've ever been, but maybe that's because I don't generally play Live-Service games. Those kinds of games have to be really special to draw me in, and most of them aren't.
Nice video dragoon! I am in my early twenties and I have to say that this is true. I am not highly intrigued by games nowadays as much as I was in the past. For that, I try genres and titles that I haven't experienced in the past. Finnaly, I have lost any interest in multiplayer games, they are so tyring, except co-op games with company.
I recently went through this mindset, and taking a break really helped me. I have always just purchased a new game playing for an hour and putting the game down. But now, after the break I cleaned up my steam library, and I feel myself enjoying games again. Would also recommend backlogged :)

In recent years, I started enjoying smaller experiences. Something that I could play start to finish in like 2-3 days. Gives you the chance to mix it up and try different types of games.
More recently, I've been enjoying the free monthly games on PSN too. A lot of these end up being games I hadn't heard of before or wouldn't choose to play on my own. A Plague Tale Requiem was an unexpected gem. And I tried my first ever rougelike in Skul: The Hero Slayer.
Another thing I've stopped doing is trying to do EVERYTHING a game has to offer. For years, I've tried 100%ing games, only to burn myself out on that game and never go back to it. When I play TotK, I played through the main story and hardly did any side quests. Now, I'm thinking of breaking it out again and checking them out, as well as playing around more with building stuff
Every time I feel burnt out I just play dark souls 1 again and that fixes everything. Sometimes you just need a quick refresher with a classic to get back on top of things.
Great video, as someone who also grew up in the late SNES, N64, PS2 era I find that just in the past like year games have been less appealing. To me its more about the type of games though, the new Ratchet on PS5 was awesome, Elden ring as big as it maybe is not my thing, but most live service games are just not appealing like they used to be even though there is more of them. Example Battlefield 1 was amazing...the new ones just don't seem as good. Got burned out on Apex Legends and Overwatch didn't even bother with the 2nd one. I am looking forward to the new Black Ops though as that looks like it might bring something fresh to the table hopefully.

I’m never playing online games anymore ever since 2019-to now and especially now in 2024 every online game is filled with gods at the game.
Modern gaming is an absolute sludgepit, for sure. But we also have a lot of stuff I could only dream of as a kid. I can play with people, even if they're on switch. We get actually decent PC ports, and we have more people gaming than any before. Those little good bits are atleast something to look forward to. And I totally agree about diversified hobbies. Even just watching movies or shows is a good way to break things up.
Games are getting more demanding, competitive and silly gameplay and these are just not fun at all. 🤷🏻♀️
Tbh i was a online player from cod to 2k rainbow six siege gta etc wasn’t burned out but definitely was getting to it i opened my mind nd wallet and bought games like spiderman ghosts of tsuama god of war last of us and tried new online fighting games like ufc and undisputed i now game more then i was back then
For me theres not really any option to step back or take a break from gaming. Its one of the only things I have to look forward to, and despite several desperate attempts to get into different hobbies or find different interests, nothing else connects with me to the same extent. I spend all my time working, then come home just to sit on my computer staring at my screen before giving up because I have no desire to play or do anything. Medications haven't helped, therapy hasn't helped. Life just feels completely empty and devoid of anything enjoyable enough to justify it.

Saying “games aren’t as good anymore” and showing the contrast between titanfall 2 and apex legends is a nice touch. Not always true, but definitely true between those two games
The one trend I see with the "games aren't fun anymore" crowd is they usually play either shooters or mobas. I think it is just a bad era for (good) multiplayer shooters and mobas have always been mobas. It is a skill issue, the games I play I still like at most as I have gotten older I have gotten pickier so I basically rarely play single player titles anymore because I just wanna play Rivals of Aether or something

While the gaming industry has its own issues, I think there are also a lot of great games being released. And I think people who usually claim that modern games are bad are either focus only on negativity and, like you said, don't want to try new things or they only enjoy playing specific genres that might not be in a good state rn (fair, but that's not the whole gaming). AAA might not be doing well right now, but indie and AA are having great time. I guess what the real issue might be is how there are so many of new games and people are overwhelmed by it. So even if there are a lot of good games coming out, people can't decide or it's just too time consuming to find something.
But I'll add one more thing to your suggestion of trying something new. Go back and look for acclaimed classic games that people praised to be one of the best. I bet there are quite enough of them that people have yet to try. Like if you want to play something different but overwhelmed by new games, then look back to the past years. Not even necessarily too old, just look for "best of this genre, great games you haven't heard of" or whatever.

Video game industry should return to its roots. Single player games, no multiplayer cash grabbing awful games. Allocate all their resources there. And everything will be normal again (Red Dead Redemption 2 for example)

It's my own gameplay, I record and catalog things to use for videos like these. Since about 2019 I've tried to archive and keep most gameplay I capture (not all) but in case I need to get clips from lets say Bioshock or Portal or something. For everything in this video though I've played/recorded the clips for this in the last 3 or 4 months

I think that's a point not many people are making. People that are 25-35+ currently, didn't play games the way the kids do now, nor did we start as early in our body's development. There really is no competing with someone who's been playing fortnite since they were 4 years old.
We are the mid-generation sufferers. Sure there were 'video-games' when we were kids, but they weren't like todays games. youngsters only know todays games, and that'll be every generation moving forward.
I'm special needs so all I do is play games since I was removed from school in 7th grade I'm 34 now and games got me though some tough times but I'm losing my will to live
I think this sentiment mainly comes from people who only playing the big games, COD, Apex, fortnite, Destiny Madden, anything with battlepass. Theyve made it a chore to keep up with the game.
I play video games since the late 80s, and for me, almost all modern AAA games nowdays arent fun at all, but (and this is a huge BUT) theres a Souls series I really enjoy and cant tired of it, tons of retro style metroidvanias, remakes of great games of the past and lots of classic retro games even from the NES / SNES era I wasnt played back in the days. Yes, theres a lot of problem with the game industry today, but if you couldnt find games to enjoy in 2024, then find another hobby.

Just finished my tactician run in BG3 and I have played this year FF7R, Stellar Blade, Dave the Diver, Dredge, Robocop, AC Mirage, Fallout 76 (from zero to platinum), more than 200 hours of FF14, Immortals of Aveum, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and some Helldivers 2. I sincerely cannot understand where all this gloom comes from. And we are having AC Shadows, Space Marines 2, Astro. Of course, I don't touch any competitive multiplayer bs, that thing is pure cancer, I wish people stopped wasteing money on that idiocy.
ive tried some of those games but i just didnt like them. I can appreciate the development work on BG3 i just didnt like it. Ff7remake i got on sale but it was very cringy and i hated the combat. Dave rhe diver felt very repetitive for me. I kinda just stopped playing video games cause all the supposed good games just werent very good imo

It’s because most of those games don’t do anything that fresh or new in terms of gameplay. Ppl that are tired of games are definitely ppl that played lots of games for at least 10 or 15 years. We’ve experienced many of these games gameplay types several times already.
And there’s some gamers like yourself that never seem to get tired of similar gameplay which is fine. That kind of attitude also makes it easier to make a UA-cam career off of gaming.

I actually tried getting out of my comfort zone because of the burnout and I discovered my love for fighting games and JRPGs. Like Persona. I never thought that I'd ever touch Persona, I always dismissed it as just some cringe weeb trash, but now I consider P5 as one of my favorite games in general.
But besides trying different things, sometimes just going back to the good old classics that I used to be in love with long ago is also good enough to get me back in the mood.
I think another issue with games today that can contribute to the feeling they aren't fun? The nitty gritty meta of the game world you could call "politics".
The horrible things companies are accused of doing. The news of what's going on behind the dev's doors. The fandoms and the things they do. If you are on social media a lot it's hard to not get drawn into cancel culture and outrage. And, I speak from experience, you won't even realize it's affecting you at first.
I started feeling weird playing certain games by certain devs. I started getting the urge to do background checks on them. To make sure they weren't problematic.
One reason gaming when you were younger feels better is that you just didn't know about any of that stuff. A game was just a game and a developer was just that company that made the game.

For me my favorite genre of game is pvp FPS. There is 0 doubt in my mind that the overwhelming majority of the games in the genre are not fun anymore. The live service model, the algorithims that place you into matches based on "skill", and the absolutely insane aim assist controllers get in some of these games with no way for me to only play against M&K users has ruined them. I used to love games like CoD, Apex, and Siege but they changed and turned into something I no longer enjoy. Even thematically I can hardly believe the change in art direction for some of these games with really weird goofy comestics being added like rappers and fantasy characters.
Thankfully Titanfall 2 has comeback from the grave because otherwise I don't think I could get my pvp fps fix.

Those are just off the top of my head but if people can’t enjoy gaming then you need to stop playing for like a year and then come back and fall in love.

Most arent, the industry has gone to shit. Same stale formulas since 2000, just improved graphics, more money into the art design, and we still get 20 farm cozy games and 30 turn based rpg, because nobody knows how to do proper fresh ideas.
point me in the direction of these 30 turn based RPGS. Love 'em. Also more fighting games please.
People dont do enough research to find good games. Stop stuffing your backlog with game series that have been around for 11 years+ and you think are bad now. Its not worth it compared to the wealth of Indies you can find for cheap to play.
My most anticipated sequels right now are for Cat Quest and YS.

And before someone says skill issue or whatever, have u ever stopped to think what happens to you in 10 years, when all ur top % weiners fall off to the next big cheat wave of better more unique cheating or hacking.

I personally am just ready and waiting for either AI enimies, ai generated maps/worlds and or a hub like Ready Player One and Sword Art Online. Games need to stop dropping new Content and focus on conmecting all of their old games into one big world and make it a multiplayer experience with the option to solo. So all gta games would be on one map. All pokemon games would be on one map ect ect for every franchise that would sign up for this giant United Nations of Video games. Then they should work on combining companies like Sprint and T-mobile did and make a super company. Call it The Society Project or something idk there could literally be a president of the digital multiverse with player based elections. I find it redundant to have so many games that are based around one Niche when they could work together to put all of their mechanics into one game then invision one world where all games exist. In a world like that, you'd probably get paid in game via bitcoin or some form of digital payout you can transfer to real dollars, inspiring people to really travel the world catching pokemon or bounty hunting other players because someone killed them and wants to pay fot their head. With Ai taking so many jobs and plans to leave to Mars and talks of wars i feel like it'd be a leap in the right direction. Gaming companies are just a shadow of what they could be. We could use a super comany that isn't afraid to push the limitations on imagination
