Hi this my second comment. My first comment was made just after watching the video, I have the same small consumer unit but the instructions (included) show a much larger one which is more complicated. Having made my comment I then read all the other viewer comments which picked up the issues concerning the installation and now I have a good idea of how to avoid his mistakes (how to do it) . Therefore I feel confident to install my cu in my garage and wire a lighting circuit and a socket circuit (using trunking). But the connection to the main building (house) is a bit of a mystery as I inherited a rusty steel conduit with many bends which seems impossible to feed the cable through, so maybe armoured cable would be a better solution especially as it will not be visible and possibly it would be more adaptable for dealing with garden redesign (change of levels) in the near future. So I feel confident to do most of the job and get my (trusted) electrician to do the last bit and make sure it's right. To sum up. The video showed me what I needed to do. Good work. At least you were sensible and had someone over looking your work. Better than some proper electricians videos on here. God knows how they get work.
Not sure if it's been mentioned but you really should have a grommet between socket and light fused switch otherwise the cable rubs against the cut out hole in the metal and is a point of weakness. Also, personally I like to connect the SWA shielding to earth as well. You can get a ring that fits around the thread on the top of the glanding inside the CU for a wire link to the Earth block.
If you watch any of the electricians who vlog on UA-cam they come across far worse work from supposed trades people. Yes this install isn't perfect but by the very fact it is documented people can use it as a learning tool and geek street can go back and rectify anything as necessary.
I need another switch to connect in to my garage sockets. I put them in . I know all about electrics ,but know not to tamper with my consumer unit. When I moved into my house there was already a lighting circuit outside with trip switch in the consumer unit . This enabled me to install further lighting in the garage that was built later. I have dual switch lights and one pair that work on one switch. Further connections are made via junction boxes for my security lighting and interior lighting i installed in my conservatory. All correct thickness of cable has been used I just am thinking of leaving the sockets to a qualified electrician who has to sign it off anyway !!!!
This is a great video and good effort. Reading all the comments from qualified sparkys tells me I should find a video on how to do this by a qualified sparky.
As an electrician it's certainly better than the old installation. Would have liked to do a Zs and RCD test with my expensive test equipment that is lying unused because everyone is doing it themselves.
@@MrPaulpithers it's a skilled job that people should be able to make a living from. Can't put a price on safety however at the same time if someone has taken the time to learn the safe way to wire new circuits etc then that's good for them but I would still lay to have it tested and rectified if need be by a competent electrician. If it doesn't comply with current regs and theres a fire the insurance company will use that as an excuse to not pay out which could be very costly.
Oh no, another person who wants something for nothing because he can't afford it. You pay the going rate for skilled work. What do you want to pay ? £5 per hour?
I don't understand why there are so many negative comments about this installation, and before y'all start complaining at me I do not see anything wrong with his work. Seriously, who fucking cares? I mean, he may have used cable ties to keep the T&E's together but overall his work is actually not that bad. I wired up ring mains and a lighting circuit in my shed over 10 years ago and guess what, nothing has burnt down and my electrics have been working perfectly ever since.
Well you know, it's funny. I started learning how to service and repair my car two years ago and my local garage, to whom I had previously been taking it, started reminding me that DIY work is highly dangerous. Apparently by learning new skills, taking my time and doing it myself I was placing myself and my family at risk. Two years on my cars (4 or them) are fine, we are all fine and I've saved _thousands_ of pounds. I'm not an electrician so cannot judge the quality of this work, but it's always interesting to see professionals wade in and kick DIY folk. Go and look at plumbing and welding videos and it's much the same. (I do my own plumbing and welding and, strangely, the quality is better than that which I previously paid for, just like the vehicle maintenance. You 'professional' car mechanics who don't grease bolts when you put them in, you know who you are.) Just watch me get flamed for this.... ;-)
Not bad for a DIY, see the usual nasty comments but don't expect any better, I've always found sparkies to be the most obnoxious of all the trades, I think the level 3 NVQ really goes to their heads, some people need to drop the attitude and get a fucking life, you studied electrics at college, you're not rocket scientists, keep doing the videos mate, I don't see a problem as long as it's done safely and checked by a qualified person afterwards
I can't believe you comment - never mind you're language. There are so many things wrong with this video and this installation. Electrical installations should only be done by qualified electricians.
@@nosferatu8293 I said as long as the work is done safely and checked by a qualified person afterwards I didnt see a problem, and I stand by that, electrics isn't rocket science, don't get me wrong, it's not the neatest job, but I've met many a qualified spark who take much less pride in their work than this guy Peter, let me guess, you're apprentice trained from 16, bore off mate, you're just pissed off coz average DIYers are taking work from you
@@stephenjones529 , the word is 'because', not 'coz'. I know its a big word for you, but there you have it. Have you ever heard of household insurance? would you buy a house that had had the wiring done by a 'DIYer?Maybe you would, but insurance companies don't pay out on claims for fire damage where the cause has been identified as work carried out by an unqualified person. Ever heard of competent person or responsible person?? I could go on but I have a life!
Fantastic Fartwell Manor has got an old fuse box! I think I’ll have a go at fitting a new consumer unit for Lord and lady Fartwell! It will make the old manor a lot safer as I’m getting fed up with the old bits of fuse wire.
I've seen some sparkys work worse! Little tip, twist any double wires and when single double them over, a better connection area then and good practice, 👍, seen so many poor connections makes me wonder what and how the sparks of today coming out of college are being taught!!
I think the reason this person did the work himself is because if he called out a qualified electrician the electrician would have done a worse job. Just like you get with any other so called professionals in their field of work. The problem is nobody works with pride anymore, it’s all about getting the work done as quickly as possible and then on to the next job. Get as many bucks in as you can, as quickly as you can. There are a few comments on here from people who know their stuff, probably certified electricians, would you have done the job to spec? How many corners would you have cut? Many I think.
I have been a builder for 30 year and had clueless sparks on my jobs ,why is it they all turn up on youtube saying how its not to be done scared you might loose a few pound. It said at the begining it would be signed of by an electrician so he would pick up the faults,, or would he just get his money and go like 70% of you lot would
If the faults are being picked up after the video goes live on here that’s hardly helpful is it?! How do the DIY numpties know which bits are correct and which aren’t...?
Paul... that's is the problem, what he has done is unsafe, this is a dangerous instruction video and the crucial point about this video which is good earthing has been botched and may present a real risk to family or property in the event of a fault, it is clear you have little electrical background as you probably don't see the glaringly dangerous part of this install.
The one thing I would strongly suggest you change is to use conduit instead of nail fixed clips, I just wouldn't trust the nails to stay in the masonry. That aside, electricity goes where you want and not where you don't want, so, good enough I guess.
it would be easy for me find a load of problems being an electrician, but that aside why do people always want to put consumer units/fuse boards in the most difficult places, its a lot easier installing them at chest height, although inside a house they should be mounted between 1350 - 1450mm, and thats to the switches, just for future reference.
@@pbop619 you know what, I ask myself the same question, when I see some of the crap others have installed, that height is in the building regs, maybe in BS7671 but I am not sure.
Hi does a homes consumer box need upgrading and is a second consumer box needed for for a outbuilding/garage when supplying electricity from home to outbuilding/garage, what components are needed altogether to supply electricity from house to outbuilding/garage please, can you tell me including type of armoured cable and Internet cables please. Great video thankyou.
Don't mean to be rude but leave it to the pros! There was pretty much no point in installing a sub main CU since you could have just used the existing switched fused comnection to fuse down for the lights. Would have been more worth your while paying out for a fuseboard change at your intake (if you didnt already have RCD protection and a metal board)
Thanks for this video, very helpful in that I have just bought the exact same unit from B&Q for £35 so I now know how to install it and also that I wasn't 'ripped off' on the price!
So this is notifiable work and building control should be notified along with the test results on electrical installation certificate, schedule of inspections, schedule of generic test results
Just as proof as to why many people do their own work, is tradesmen ...not all, but I would say more than half, can't be bothered to do the job properly, and that's when they turn up, I got in touch with a sparky last week an asked if could fit me an updated consumer unit in our garage, as the one in their is about 50yrs old, no problem he said, I will pop round over the weekend to look at the job and give a quote on the work, weekend come and gone no show, then 3 days later he gets in touch to say he was busy, well we are all busy, but a tradesmen supposed to keep a diary and work to it, my thoughts were, if you can't be bothered to get in touch regarding our appointment or be bothered to turn up..whats your work going to be like, especially if I need to call you back for something you've done that's not inadequate ?
Fuck all to do with the mans work are to do with him he might have worked a 60 r week are somthing you don’t know I mean if he’s busy enough he doesn’t need your job are is doing another job it’s not easy being in a trade I do steel erecting and welding after a 50 r week the last thing I wanna do is go do more work if there’s somthing inaedequat do it your self I’m just saying don’t slate all trades men they should be payed more the the idiots that run the country for a start !!!

Okay, so in some ways, this was not the greatest job ever, but clearly this guy was trying.Lots of people have made very valid points here, but in the guys defence there are 3 criticisms that are especially harsh :-1) he had the work checked by a qualified electrician - or so it is stated - just this doesn't show in the video2) I gather (not sure) he had not installed the original cable - so issues such as not having the yellow core marked with Earth Sleeving, and no grommets between the two boxes were not of his creation ? 3) The SWA cores not being resleeved in the CU - yes this may not be ideal - but really, is this going to cause any confusion / problems - I'd be more concerned if this cable used the harmonised colours, as this is much more confusing.4) someone said the cables should be afforded mechanical protection - this is opinion only, since when were cables clipped on the surface not allowed ? Isn't their visibility deemed adequate protection still ? Yes, sure the job isn't ideal & should really have been done professionally - but aside from the bad job of fitting the SWA gland, I reckon it was a reasonable stab. So what if he doesn't have VDE tools. The CU I think is better than the old install - wonder if it was a 13amp fuse in that FCU ?Now it is RCD protected & it may not have been before ? (who knows) I do feel though that only videos demonstrating the very best practices should be available - people will watch this & do God knows what. Reading through the comments people are seeking your advice (though you state they should consult a spark - will they ?) Lastly, B***me2ice, or whatever your name is (stupid f'ing name), you have too much to say for yourself, who the f*ck are you, and why don't you shut your cake 'ole. Don't reply - I don't give a flying f*ck what you think. Geek Street - good effort, but your work isn't perfect, hope you aren't helping too many people to do this kind of thing for themselves (they'll do 95% of the job you did, and then show someone else who'll do 95% of that job, and so on down). I think this video should come down for that reason - sorry, not nitpicking. ps - I know I put lastly & then went further - but it is too much of a pain to retype / change
Sorry mate, way too many issues with what you've done there. I think I counted at least 7 violations. Posting D.i.Y videos will always land you with criticism from so called professionals (most of whom talk the talk but have no bloody clue either) in future I would get yourself a copy of the electricians guide (It's a cut down version of the wiring regulations BS7671) and familiarise yourself with what is expected. Also there are many things to take into consideration when adding new circuits to a system such as design current, distance between main supply and intended installation, voltage drop, insulation, fire and sound isolation grouping of cables, fixing method, continuity, impedance, isolation, disconnection method in rise of a fault, the list goes on and on. That's why the government wants people to be properly trained and regulated to carry out these installs. You can do it yourself but you need to get it checked out and be prepared for the guy to say "nah mate start again"
Nah consumer unit a good height but best job is a 20mm plastic conduit along the top of the wall into the side of consumer unit fit a Tbox and drop down a 20 mm plastic conduit to sockets and switches use 2.5 and 1.5 singles cables also pvc socket box and swich box they are unbreakable easy and neat job and looks good the light switch at your door or doors would be a normal switch not a switch spur unit
210 Electricians with OCD got triggered by the old cable colors then moaned about cable ties. The worst part was the African grade light fitting but everyone was too concerned with how tidy he did up a gland lol
This dude has actually done not bad considering he is not a spark! He didn't cut enough of the armour off though, even considering it will be hidden by the shroud. Also why does he put the box in a corner? Would next to the door not be better? but all in all he done not bad.
As a qualified electrician there is NO WAY you would get that signed off in that state. No grommets between the socket and switched spur, that swa gland is shocking, terrible terrible standard of work.
The wires in the gland are crossed. I do all my own work as I don't trust so called professional at all these days. They may know the theory but their practical leaves a lot to be desired.

Enjoyed your video. No waffel :) Keep up the good work.
As an electrician it's certainly better than the old installation. Would have liked to do a Zs and RCD test with my expensive test equipment that is lying unused because everyone is doing it themselves.
If Sparky's were not so expensive people would not do it themselves .
"I haven't got enough work" Said no sparky ever.
As an electrician this almost brought me to tears watching this
Too right
I thought I was the only one sitting here shaking my head and saying WHAT.
Why?
Nice clear video 👍
i am not a spark but i am a diy type of guy.hes done a good job for a home owner apart the cabling after the unit which would of put in trunking.
You 'professional' car mechanics who don't grease bolts when you put them in, you know who you are.)
Just watch me get flamed for this....
@@nosferatu8293 I'd check your usage of the words "your and you're", before you start correcting my grammar Pete
Thank you!! I can understand now
Fantastic
Fartwell Manor has got an old fuse box! I think I’ll have a go at fitting a new consumer unit for Lord and lady Fartwell! It will make the old manor a lot safer as I’m getting fed up with the old bits of fuse wire.
Way to go! Use a none insulated screwdriver on electrical
I've seen some sparkys work worse! Little tip, twist any double wires and when single double them over, a better connection area then and good practice, 👍, seen so many poor connections makes me wonder what and how the sparks of today coming out of college are being taught!!
Thank you 👍🏻
Quick question were Have you connected the armour cable in b4 you added it to the shed consumer unit
Great video. Thanks for sharing
sir excellent knowledge
I have been a builder for 30 year and had clueless sparks on my jobs ,why is it they all turn up on youtube saying how its not to be done scared you might loose a few pound. It said at the begining it would be signed of by an electrician so he would pick up the faults,, or would he just get his money and go like 70% of you lot would
Gary Fawcett, hi Gary are you say that on only 3 out of 10 jobs you have done you have let an Electrician your are happy with do the work .
If the faults are being picked up after the video goes live on here that’s hardly helpful is it?! How do the DIY numpties know which bits are correct and which aren’t...?
nearly cried when i saw how he cut that SWA
Looks perfectly adequate for a safe DIY. This is not an instructional video for electricians, nor did it ever claim to be.
Paul May do you have any electrical knowledge?
Paul... that's is the problem, what he has done is unsafe, this is a dangerous instruction video and the crucial point about this video which is good earthing has been botched and may present a real risk to family or property in the event of a fault, it is clear you have little electrical background as you probably don't see the glaringly dangerous part of this install.
Instead of the light switch can i use the breaker switch? To turn on and off
The one thing I would strongly suggest you change is to use conduit instead of nail fixed clips, I just wouldn't trust the nails to stay in the masonry. That aside, electricity goes where you want and not where you don't want, so, good enough I guess.
This guy should teach at those "become a qualified electrician in 6 weeks" colleges. If he's pleased then all is well.
Agreed
Very interesting, thank you for posting this, often videos miss steps, this was clear and step by step.
it would be easy for me find a load of problems being an electrician, but that aside why do people always want to put consumer units/fuse boards in the most difficult places, its a lot easier installing them at chest height, although inside a house they should be mounted between 1350 - 1450mm, and thats to the switches, just for future reference.
What regs are you working to?!? haaaaaa
@@pbop619 you know what, I ask myself the same question, when I see some of the crap others have installed, that height is in the building regs, maybe in BS7671 but I am not sure.
@@acelectricalsecurity Iwould say at neck height is the best especially when you have kids at home.
Could've at least tried to learn how to attach the gland to the SWA... please no one try to learn from this guy
Was gonna say shouldn't it have a banjo fitted or is that only for 2 core armoured?
@@andrewharris7123 any SWA should have a banjo or some other method of earting the armouring at at least one end of the cable
The armoured cable is the supply to the sub CU. What is the other end connected to? What supplies the CU?
The next door neighbour 🤣👍
@@rotay4900
Amazing.
Top man quality vid pal
Hi does a homes consumer box need upgrading and is a second consumer box needed for for a outbuilding/garage when supplying electricity from home to outbuilding/garage, what components are needed altogether to supply electricity from house to outbuilding/garage please, can you tell me including type of armoured cable and Internet cables please. Great video thankyou.
great videos
Thanks!
You could have used a normal light switch if you brought the power to the switch instead of still using the fused spur. As long as its on a B6 breaker
He said he was keeping that in situ.
Need to see how you connected the swa to your main cu please.
excellent insulation on that screwdriver. wow
hahaha
Aren’t you supposed to do ring main 2.5 cable to the box
I want to see how it connects to the main fuse board can't figure it out.
Nice vid bro. Ideal for what it is.
Plugs sockets can only hold up to 13 amps add another socket on a series
Hi, how many mm cable is armoured cable? Thanks
where did you bring the saw cable ?
Should of done the wiring for sockets and switch in 20mm pvc conduit single cores more professional job
Never knew that pvc conduit was suitable for anything other than centrally heated ,internal work , although seen plenty fitted by experts .
Ime no electrician, but shouldn’t the armour on the incoming cable be earthed, in case it’s damaged ?
Don't mean to be rude but leave it to the pros!
There was pretty much no point in installing a sub main CU since you could have just used the existing switched fused comnection to fuse down for the lights. Would have been more worth your while paying out for a fuseboard change at your intake (if you didnt already have RCD protection and a metal board)
What size MBC have you used in the main consumer unit please?
Liked and subscribed a brilliant little video. Clear and right to the point. You made that look so easy. Well done!.
Excellent
thx mate I just have done mine first time in my life in my office/shed. very helpful video
Thanks for the comment. Don't forget to like and subscribe!
Thanks for this video, very helpful in that I have just bought the exact same unit from B&Q for £35 so I now know how to install it and also that I wasn't 'ripped off' on the price!
Don’t you have two 2.5 cables to run the socket ring main ? And would the both go into the 16amp circuit breaker ?
So this is notifiable work and building control should be notified along with the test results on electrical installation certificate, schedule of inspections, schedule of generic test results
he has fotgotton to earth the armoured cable very inportant
Nice but what about the wiring at the meter? so its separate

@@jamie9327 It takes qualified professional to truly forget. And if they can't remember a booking they've made, then how can they be trusted to remember the training from maybe many years back? Maybe that's why they forget how to do things right first time, forget to return to fix it, forget to even finish a job at all? A qualification is one thing, professional is another matter entirely.
(who knows)
I do feel though that only videos demonstrating the very best practices should be available - people will watch this & do God knows what. Reading through the comments people are seeking your advice (though you state they should consult a spark - will they ?)
Lastly, B***me2ice, or whatever your name is (stupid f'ing name), you have too much to say for yourself, who the f*ck are you, and why don't you shut your cake 'ole.
You can do it yourself but you need to get it checked out and be prepared for the guy to say "nah mate start again"
nice video but i wouldve turned the switch off before screwing the wires out because i heard something pop/blow
Mate, can I run some hi tuff cable with a 13a plug from an outdoor socket to a small consumer unit my garage like you have done?
Started to watch this OMG couldn't anymore ?
Do u need an earthing rod
This dude has actually done not bad considering he is not a spark! He didn't cut enough of the armour off though, even considering it will be hidden by the shroud. Also why does he put the box in a corner? Would next to the door not be better? but all in all he done not bad.
Great video... Did you use tail junction box or sth from where you got your supply from??
Thanks
well done nice and easy
As a qualified electrician there is NO WAY you would get that signed off in that state. No grommets between the socket and switched spur, that swa gland is shocking, terrible terrible standard of work.
Oh my gosh
The wires in the gland are crossed. I do all my own work as I don't trust so called professional at all these days. They may know the theory but their practical leaves a lot to be desired.
What size SWA is it
