Between 20 and 30 percent of all doctor visits are initiated due to lack of energy, or chronic fatigue. It is a common problem that plagues so many of us. Often we don’t realize that the last thing we want to do-exercise-could be an easy solution to increasing our energy levels. When we create stress in the body from exercise or other stressors, also called hormesis, we can actually build back stronger as the body heals and repairs.
In this episode of my new Masterclass series, I am interviewed by my good friend and podcast host, Dhru Purohit, about all the things we can do to improve our energy levels. We also talk about how caffeine and sugar in your diet impact energy, as well as answer questions from our community about the value of napping, if MCT oil increases energy, and why fruit juice is not a great choice.
Dhru Purohit is a podcast host, serial entrepreneur, and investor in the health and wellness industry. His podcast, The Dhru Purohit Podcast, is a top 50 global health podcast with over 30 million unique downloads. His interviews focus on the inner workings of the brain and the body and feature the brightest minds in wellness, medicine, and mindset.

I used to have CFS as well. I believe the psychological component is huge. I've coached people on this and worked with some leading recognized doctors. People often feel fundamentally "inadequate" and the solution to life they feel is "just do a little more and work a little harder and do this little secret thing." When the deeper issue is one of people perhaps doing the wrong job or in a bad relationship or bad life situation, but not sure how to process that. A great life coach or therapist can help (don't stick with anyone who you're seeing for more than a few months, because they're not helping). Just my experience. But hopefully it helps! This works physiologically and medically as well as it shifts the autonomic nervous system in the body from "fight/flight/faint emergency mode" to "health and healing mode," which changes even what foods we want to eat, how we sleep, and how we heal.

Great tips if you’re rich!! During his “difficult years” his sob story to make him “relatable”, he says he worked three days a week plus had time during the day to get massages, hot saunas, etc. so he’s able to “work” his 9-4pm” job.

And, what is your point? He is a doctor. He was sick and because he had a high paying job he could cut back his hours, still have enough income to be fine…and take care of himself. It wasn’t a sob story…just his own story.

I really enjoyed this, thanks guys. 👍
Ive had covid twice and I haven’t been the same since.
I quit smoking cigarettes 9 days ago. I only smoked 5 to 10 cigarettes a week but still it was a bad gross habit.
Im hoping my breathing gets better soon.
I used to love to work out and slow jog. I
I have always loved to jog and be outside in nature but now it’s very difficult for me because I feel like I never get enough oxygen.I get winded so fast now.
And since the 2nd covid I had last January I always have vertigo. Before Covid I was fine.
    Im 47 and feel 77
Ive never been more depressed in My life!!!!
I pray one day soon… I wake up and feel normal again. Im in shock that I never feel good anymore!!! It’s like a bad dream, I want to wake up from.
And my husband thinks I’m faking half the time, it’s awful.
I can’t even work and I need to. I need to contribute and stop putting all the stress of paying the mortgage and bills on my husband! I feel like a weak pathetic wining loser.
Anyways, thanks for this insightful podcast. 👍👍👍

I wish you luck on your recovery. Watching this channel (Mark Hyman) is a great first start. 1) Cut out all sugar - you will be amazed at the progress. 2) Quitting smoking is also critical 3) I have been doing 16 hour fasting (eat for 8 hours) - and have been amazed at the result 4) Exercise a few minutes a day and if you can 5) cut out all the omega 6s (bad fats/oils).

What I do yhat literally makes you feel like your glowing(& is safe) is taking a warm to ylhot shower, then after i do that as long as i like, gradually lower it to as cold as possible, then do that for 2-5 mins while getting everywhere on your body wet(armpits, neck, hands, back of your legs, feet, crotch etc.) Then switch back to warm or hot gradually for 2-5 mins, then rotate back and forth like 2-3 more times and preferably end on a cold cycle. Trust me you will feel like a million bucks for hours. Its safe and you will feel like youre glowing

The only time I tried a sauna followed by an icy water bath at my gym, I got out of the bath, walked to the shower, and passed out. I awoke to the EMTs. I told them I was fine, then passed out again. I had never passed out in my entire life. The EMTs told me not to do it again and explained why. I've forgotten the explanation but wonder if you should be recommending this without reservation. I was probably in my late 30s, early 40s at the time.

Hi Firefly, I agree that doc Hyman is a bit flippant about the boil to ice shock treatment. I never had a problem with it when I was younger and dodging dinosaurs but everybody around me was scared to death about it. One has to be pretty fit & cardio strong I would think. Dr. Hyman should know that a LOT people that view him are metabolically ill & not properly prepared for the ice shock. This recommendation should come with a warning label (like cigarettes or heroin does). I think the doc is too busy counting his money to be as truly compassionate as he wants to appear. Blessing to you & a good long healthy life.

How long were you in each? If you stay too long in both yeah you will pass out. If it’s say in a shower 5-10 seconds alternating between the two for the last minute to build a tolerance to both and the change between them.

@@mcmjr405 Hello H-S. I was just referring to the cold plunge after a sauna. I came out of that as fast as Bugs Bunny out of his rabbit hole. The shower thing I do do cuz I control the temperature & can bring it down more slowly than a plunge until I can't take it anymore - sorta like you do. My criticism of Dr. Mark is his lack of warning especially since he talks to an audience that probably has metabolically weakened people. Health & blessing to you.

It's really good that Dhru makes the point about hot and cold showers. Dr Hyman's only flaw seems to be that he is so used to having money and seeing patients with money that he forgets how big of a limiting factor it is for some people. If you're living with chronic fatigue on $1200 a month in a first world country and you're socially isolated, i.e. you aren't going to get any practical help from friends or family and you're too tired or depressed to cook 3/4 of the time, I would love to know what the recommendations are.

Dr Hyman is a compassionate doctor and gives FREE medical information, many other doctors do not unless you buy a product from them. Dr Hyman speaks to ALL humans regardless of financial status. To criticize shows you rather be a victim than a warrior. We can only try everyday the best way we can with what we have in resources, comparing does not help. Someone is always going to have more or less of each of us. I am home most days due to CFS but all I can do is try every day with ways that I can. Best of health to you

Herbal tea or mushroom coffee is a healthy alternative too. "A motherectomy." Dr. Hyman has a good sense of humor.

Artificial sweetners fool the body into believing sugar is coming. Unfortunately, the sugar substitues spike blood sugar like cane sugar does. Dr. Hyman advocates trying to avoid all sugar & flour (which has a higher G I than sugar). Monk fruit and Stevia are usually thought of as the least harmful though.

Jesus get to the point. Somuch repetitive waffle. You could easily condense this to an 8 minute video.

I smell a bit of bs on this doctor. He clearly is very privileged, and he gets a bit upset when called out on it by Dhru. Also, what’s with the frequent burping? He keeps doing this in many videos. Seems he also literally drinks cups of olive oil, probably that.
