REVIEW: Daystate Renegade PCP air rifle with Hybrid Trigger Unit

  • The Daystate Renegade bullpup offers a new new concept in mechanically-driven PCP airguns courtesy of its Hybrid Trigger Unit, or HTU - because no longer does the forward-mounting of the trigger require a long rod to link the blade and sears! Nigel Allen takes a closer look at Daystate’s latest technological first while giving the Renegade his usual, comprehensive test.

      Glad to be able to be back, Mr W!!! Thanks for your kind comment... and glad you like the rifle. I don't think bullpups are necessarily everyone's cup of tea, but when you get a good 'un - or at least one with a half-decent trigger - there's no doubting the extra manoeuvrability and handling speed their compact configuration brings.

    hi Nigel, please do some more features on these daystate bullpups,personally had BIG reservations about the charging handle and mag locations for starters but had a go with a pulsar and it was revelating!!!! balance in shoulder and off hand/knee shooting was an excellent experience...less bench rest,more hft..... keep up the good work....

    I found that by switching pins on the magazine to load from the right made the magazine jump out a bit from the action and soon changed it back. To be able to have a true right hand magazine Daystate would need to reverse the index arm so that it does not push the magazine out to the left as the index pin strikes and pushes the index arm up, it causes the index arm to ride along the index pin.
    The Pulsar and Renegade really come into there own with the weight at the rear as it makes the rifle more stable and that shows on the longer unsupported shots that you can now comfortably take over a more conventional air rifle.
    Great review once again.

      74d1gger Interesting info there. Did you change the magnet, too? Thanks for the kind comments about the video, and informative comment. You're right about the rear-biased weight improving balance (or at least giving the shooter the advantage). I would also add that the shortness of the bullpup configuration, by way of bringing the muzzle closer to the shooter, has serious advantages, too.

    • @diggerairgungurus5221
      @diggerairgungurus5221 8 років тому

      Yes the magnet was swapped over as well. That help bring the magazine back in to the action. Daystate sell a right hand magazine, but from a thread on the Owners forum it is only the pin and magnet that's been moved at time of assembly. They really need to change the side that the index arm pivots from to allow for a magazine that loads from the right and is as smooth as its left hand loading original configutated magazine. The only reason a lot of us want a right hand loading magazine is to made cocking and fitting and removing of a magazine more fluid like the HW100 is.

    • @AirgunTV
      @AirgunTV  8 років тому

      I see. That's interesting info for sure, Digger - being a right-hander, the only time I've ever swapped the mag is when I have a scope with a large sidewheel on the LHS; and I haven't really scrutinised the mag's fitting (nor ever questioned the resulting accuracy). Next time I meet up with Daystate, I'll certainly bring it up. Thanks for commenting...

      fedaykeen Yeah, a few comments have said about the cheek being close to the mag... but it has never really been something I've noticed up until now. (Nor on my Pulsar). I think I'm going to get a complex over it now!!!

    Hello Nigel, loving your videos. Quick question, what scope would you recommend for this rifle?

    • @AirgunTV
      @AirgunTV  8 років тому +1

      H Antony. Thanks for your kind comment - a lot of work goes into the testing of these guns, and the video productions we ultimately make, so your appreciation is equally as appreciated. :)
      As for scope, like I said in the video, I think something with some big, heavy glass up front (44 to 56mm objective, say) works in that it brings the weight forward without, oddly, making the rifle appear heavy. By bringing the centre of gravity forward slightly, you get a lighter perceived weight - I find this on a lot of rifles, actually. I put an Optisan 4-12x44i EVX on this one which is a lumpy old telly and it worked rather well. On my Pulsar (very similar rifle, only with an electronic action), I often use an MTC Viper Connect, which has no objective to speak of, but I'm thinking of changing that now that I've seen what a difference a heavier telly makes to the bullpup's feel when its between your hands.
      So, with a billion-and-one scopes falling into that category, I'd struggle to recommend just one. What I would say, though, is this: Get a decent one - this is a top class rifle that deserves a proper sighting system. I'd also go for a zoom - a bullpup is so versatile that you'll find yourself using it in all manner of scenarios, and it's always good to have a scope that's as equally as versatile. One that winds down to 3x or 4x for close-quarter work around the farmyard (or in the back garden), but can crank up to 10x or 12x (or more) for the longer-range work. HTH.

    I know its a very well made bit of kit, but I always think a plastic moulded stock looks so cheap! I know its high grade fire arm spec Polymer but it just doesn't look nice, in my opinion anyway. Rubberised wood stocks like the hw110 or the Daystate Panther looks much better. Nice review though :) Good to see this channel being used again. It's hard to find decent British airgun reviews/info videos. Hope there's a lot more too come!

    This rifle reminds me of the remington 870 bullpup conversion I had. It's so ugly its beautiful lol. I do like how they did the trigger though that is a nice feature but I can't decide if I want a rifle that has electronics in it. But I know a few years back remington had a bolt action rifle with a electronic trigger but I never got one because it relied on special ammo that was way more expensive then standard 30-06. However I do like the compact size and the fact the trigger isn't going to be all mushy. I'll have to try one

    • @AirgunTV
      @AirgunTV  8 років тому

      Haha - 'mushy' is certainly NOT a word I'd use to describe the Renegade's trigger! But it's also like no other bullpup trigger - a great mix of electronic and match. The blade releases like clicking a computer mouse button; the shot releases like slipping through a match trigger.

    How does the renegade compare to the pulsar? forgetting about the difference in cost,just the rifles compared to each other

    • @AirgunTV
      @AirgunTV  8 років тому

      That's such a good question, Mark - and I am thinking about putting together a video about it. In short, the Renegade's performance blew me away - and, as a Pulsar owner, I don't say that lightly. The Slingshot hammer system did a brilliant job on this particular sample (as the power curve trace showed). There's slightly more vibration with the Renegade (you can hear a 'ding' as the hammer strikes the valve in the video), and I felt the muzzle lift was a little more on the Renegade, though it wasn't detrimental to accuracy.
      Those groups in the video were in quite a stiff breeze, and you can't argue with that kind of performance. And, of course, I DIDN'T want to put the rifle in a rest like so many other YTers seem to want to do. That's not what I call 'real world' shooting!!!
      The Pulsar's lock-time is definitely quicker, but, again, I didn't find the Renegade's particularly slow - I couldn't blame my missed shots on the action, that's for sure. I prefer wood - so the Renegade's synth livery isn't my cup of tea, but it is more practical; it's certainly better balanced than the Pulsar, which is so butt heavy (cos of the battery), that you need a lumpy old scope to try and push the weight forward. That, of course, just adds to the Pulsar's weight. Carrying the Renegade in the field for long periods was certainly a much more pleasant experience.
      Some people have commented that the Renegade's sidelever looked awkward to cock, but maybe that's just me 'looking' cacky-handed; I didn't really find it an issue, though you do have to be flexible in your shoulder to pull it back that last little bit against the hammer spring. There's no effort - you just have to get your arm right back to do it. Of course, in the Pulsar's case, there's no hammer to cock! If you're a Southpaw, remember that the Pulsar's sidelever can be user-adjusted from one side of the other, but the Renegade's has to be ordered like that (or changed by a Daystate dealer) if you're in the UK as the anti-tamper stops it being a user-doable procedure - I should have made that clear in the video.
      And the Pulsar comes with an integral laser, which can't easily be dropped in to the Renegade. Personally, I'd rather the Pulsar came like the Renegade... withOUT the laser. I rarely use it (though concede that it is an excellent 'visual' safety feature).
      In all honesty, they're very hard to differentiate between - lovers of mechanically-driven PCPs will prefer the Renegade, while techies will get turned on by, erm, turning 'on' the Pulsar. Both rifles are great, however - and both are prime examples of how Daystate always push the airgun design envelope. Each is a very advanced air rifle. HTH. ATB - Nige

    Fair play to daystate for that trigger system. I'm amazed powder burning bullpups aren't using a similar system to be honest as the trigger has always been the main downside of any bullpup. There was a Ruger 1022 made using such a trigger though the added advantage is insane rate of fire. ua-cam.com/video/1pq_9p32o9Q/v-deo.html

      There have been few bullpups that I've warmed to because of their triggers; this Renegade's HTU is every bit as good as my Pulsar's - thank goodness for Daystate's forward-thinking approach to airgun desigh, eh?!!! :)

    That thing looks very awkward to cock......cant understand for the life of me why they didnt incorporate a forward cocking mechanism, which some other rifle do.
    The other rifles are also better priced and I cant see this fancy electronic trigger lasting for more than a few years possibly making it a very expensive cupboard filler.

    • @AirgunTV
      @AirgunTV  8 років тому

      Duke Box Thanks. It's not really awkward, Duke... but I would concede that it certainly does take some getting used to. I, personally, wouldn't consider it a deal breaker... and don't find it a problem on my Pulsar, though obviously that gun doesn't need to pull back against any spring tension.

      David Dickinson Thanks David. I'm the same - that's why my Pulsar is dressed in Forest laminate! Interestingly, the soft touch finish of the Renegade's butt section does make you think you're holding wood, albeit black-finished. (It's actually AB66 polymer, though.)

      Thanks Dave. Actually, I think the Renegade (and Pulsar) are the kind of guns that NEED to be handled. Not everyone has a love of the bullpup configuration; not everyone finds them attractive... so not everyone really 'considers' them. But once you have one in your hand, they certainly 'grow' on you. I've watched people at shooting shows pick up the gun and then appear 'surprised' at how much better they are in the flash... or, at least, in the shoulder!
