    Best movie I've seen in decades. Funny, sad, and everything in between. Looking forward to watching it again. Emotional therapy from a very beautiful three generations of a Protestant family. I always knew Protestants like these were out there, who just wanted a peaceful life. I was the same, just a Catholic mirror image of this family, but regardless we all wanted the same thing. Love to all the wonderful people of Northern Ireland who were never involved in the violence, but merely wanted the best for their families, but paid the price of the "The Troubles" as innocent casualties of war. Respect!

      Imagine if Sir Kenneth Branagh hadn't cheated on Dame Emma Thompson whom he was married to for 6 years until he cheated on her with Helena Bonham Carter. If those two had stayed together...talk about UK Shakespeare and film royalty as well as both being world class scriptwriters/screenwriters and actors and directors though Ken has way more clout as a director than Emma who has only dabbled in one or two inconsequential films. But two of the best screenwriters and actors in the industry as a whole besides the UK.

    I'm Irish Canadian. When I was living in England, due to austerity and hostile environment measures, the only place I could get an appointment to renew my visa before expiration was in Belfast, 2 days before Christmas. While it might not have been my first choice of destinations, I had an amazing time there and learned so much more about the history of the troubles, by sitting in pubs and taking the famous black cab tour. It's such an interesting place to visit, though I would understand the impulse of any young person, particularly one with a fertile womb, to get out.

    Branagh talked about not “acting” but listening and _re_acting. My high school drama teacher, who also taught English, used to say “Acting is _re_acting, writing is _re_writing, and fortune favors the brave.” Forty years ago next year is the last time I had the privilege and joy of being taught and directed by her. I am grateful to say she is still with us, and in touch with me, and many other of her former students, on a Facebook and elsewhere.

      It's worth pointing out that Belfast is in Northern Ireland (part of the UK), and thus is not in the Republic of Ireland.

    It's a bit of an obscure one, but I can reeeeeally recommend "How to kill your neighbour's dog" featuring Kenneth Branagh, along with Robin Wright and a young(er) Jared Harris playing a very delightful role as an emotionally disturbed homeless man.
    The plot is great, the movie itself is warm, endearing, has a great sense of humor. If you haven't seen it, give it a chance. It is of a totally different caliber than say, blockbusters like Dunkirk. Other fantastic 'no small parts' of his are in the movies Conspiracy and Pirate Radio.

    When talking about modern Ireland one thing that needs to be mentioned was how a Protestant Irish Parliament successfully gained independence for Ireland between 1782 and 1800, during which time Catholics got most of their rights back, with most Irish people of different faiths uniting under the ideologies of either constitutionalism or Republicanism, with both in favour of varying degrees of Irish sovereignty/autonomy and increased personal rights.
    This independence ended when a failed Republican Revolution in 1798 led British prime minister William Pitt to intimidate and bribe the Irish Parliament into merging the Kingdom Ireland into the UK after an initial Union vote failed. Ireland’s Parliament was forced to merge with The British one (though the courts and civil service of Ireland remained separate, but nominally subject to Westminster from now on).
    People on both sides seem to have completely forgotten this chapter in Irish history, because Protestants and Catholics fighting together for an independent Irish Kingdom doesn’t fit anyone’s narrative, and yet it had a major impact on the island. Unionism, Republicanism and Constitutionalism all originate from the original Irish volunteers that used the opportunity of the American Revolution distracting Britain to revolt in 1782. This heralded the independence and has shaped all aspects of Irish politics ever since

    I love that survivors of trauma torn areas from all over the world said this was their story too.
    Mr. Branagh sure knows how to dress to bring out those already gorgeous eyes. 😁
    Re: the Young actor supporting a Liverpool football club, why would a boy from Belfast be a supporter of an English team?
    Branagh says he supports a club from Tottenham. I’m from (and still in) the US, but I watch a lot of UK media, most recently a lot of Mock the Week. (That show is a big part of what’s helped me get through the last two years.) Am I correct in recalling from things said on MtW that Tottenham is a really rough area? One thing I remember is a female comedian joking about Santa having a shorter route that year because of not having to deliver presents to the “naughty children of Tottenham and Croydon.” 😉

    I know this is just me; I hope KB fired whoever was in charge of sending him out on a prominent tv show in a suit with sleeves that were at least 3" too short. You could tell how uncomfortable he was, he never stopped pulling at them. It's not a new fad, it was someone's last minute mistake. Compare his sleeves to SC's. That said, he delivers his gift to us flawlessly and I can't wait to see the film!

    What they dont know about Brannagh is he did the most brilliant set of Belfast plays in the early 80's right in the middle of the troubles, called 'Billy' about a protestant teen fighting against his shipyard father...incredible stuff ....Americans though really should shut up about being 'irish' they are nothing of the sort and havent the faintest idea about what it was like or the complexities.

    • @jeremiahmcanally6916
      @jeremiahmcanally6916 3 роки тому

      The "Billy plays" by Graham Reid were indeed brilliant, but less of the anti-Americanism please. Irish Americans have every right to be proud of the immense contribution they made to the success of America. Why begrudge them a touch of nostalgia for their ancient homeland?
      As an Irishmen, I regard all Irish-Americans as fellow Irish. Their pride and passion are worthy of respect, not censure. Also not knowing about the complexities of American politics has rarely stopped us blethering on about the subject in Dublin and Cork!
