  • Historically, in countries where wars have been fought to liberate countries from colonialism and ruthless leadership, women often play a pivotal yet invisible role, but it cannot be downplayed.
That is even more so in Rwanda’s context. When the Rwandese Patriotic Front, (RPF-Inkotanyi) picked up arms to fight against an ethnically divisive government that had kept Rwandans in exile, women played a major role, not only behind the scenes but also on the frontline.
Women and girls formed a major part of the liberation struggle, providing the necessary human resource to support on the frontline, maintain solidarity and serve in different roles, including medical care, mobilisation, fundraising, cooking and more.
It is no wonder that today, women are still at the core of the RPF-Inkotanyi government. It is not by accident.
