1) Don't pull on the handlebars. This will usually cause the bike to tilt to one side or the other in the air. 2) Don't try to put your bike back on the ground as fast as possible. This will lead to extended arms and "dead sailor" syndrome. Let the bike come into you naturally. 3) Go slower. This will force you to push into the face of the jump harder to clear the jump. Speed will mask bad technique. GG Beth. Awesome for you.
If I press evenly, does the front and back need to travel the same distance and does the rebound need to act the same on the front and rear. I've always jumped motorcycles and bmx but I'm wanting to jump full suspension but it's feels so different. I'd appreciate any advice and that was a great comment you made. 👍
1) check suspension before you hit the trail, last thing you want to do is rear shock or fork compressing 2x times more than other. 2) prioritise the landing after the suspension compressed, I don't knwo how but found people that didn't care about the landing much and it ended mostly with injuries
I did find that practice on jumps at lower speeds definitely showed my weaknesses. I have to keep working on the “pre-loading”. It’s easy to fly over small to medium jumps at trail speed without actually jumping! Thanks! 🍻 - Beth
One more thing I do along with the tips on this video is, move my feet back and forth depending on how I want my bike to land, while on the jump I sometimes position my feet forward to dive position my bike, or heels down for landing on the back tire. Or the neutral parallel to land flat. Thanks, nice video!
So I watched this video two days ago and realized I have been jumping with only pulling my arms up, not focusing on compression and full body movements. Today I rode a trail I have ridden 100 times before, and I always skip the gap jump (we only have one). However, today I committed way before it even came into view, compressed with me full body, and I swear I floated over this thing like I was a pro rider. It was awesome. Perfect landing. Learned from experience. Things on video are 100% easier than it seems. Hit a jump out of my skill level and crashed hard. I was recording it, and when I reviewed the footage I realised how small it looked.
I was at Whistler 3 weeks ago and had the pleasure to be in a bike park for the time. As of that, i took an "intro to bikepark" lesson, which is a group ride. As the skills of the 3 person group where greatly divided, I got a 1 on 1 lesson with Ben. Back in Switzerland, singletrails are our bike pathways and Ben did a faboulous job of getting the bike park and downhill feeling into me. We did not really jump, but dropping was one of our focuses. Dropping a 1m drop at the end of the day was a huge accomplishment for me and an awesome feeling. I can't tell enough good things with getting a lesson for training new skills (specially with the great guides in whistler).
That's probably the single most helpful jumping tutorial I've seen so far. Great job! The part about compressing with my feet really upgraded my jumps: less effort, more control, much air time, so fun. Thank you.
How I fine tune my jumps is by sessioning jumps and recording it from the side. And really focusing on my form while I do it. This is great cause now you recorded yourself while focusing on your form so you will be able to see how your body reacted to your command. You will notice that your body does not do the movement as "big" as you thought it did and stuff like that!
Great tips! One question- if you’re on a hard tail bike, what changes? Can you compress a hard tail the same way? We’re making videos for beginners on hard tails.
Awesome video guys, one of the best out there for breaking it down into its simplest form. Only questions i have are: 1. Timing - are there specific points on the jumps you should be aiming to perform each step? 2. Sizing/steepness - I've found that the way you hit jumps varies greatly depending on the size and steepness of the jump. Any tips for this?
Just got my first full-suspension bike at 57, but I raced BMX and motorcycles for years when I was young. Been riding and jumping my hardtail ( mtb's) for the past 15 years and can launch off things I shouldn't be launching off but it's still in my DNA. The first jump I hit with my new SC Hightower just kinda disappeared. The suspension just sucked it up and I was probably bunny hopping at the same time. The jumps that just naturally load the bike suspension up like a 'down into a ravine and up with a launch at the top' work perfect, but the quick pop from a level trail just sends me into unifamiliar territory. Land all wrong and out of balance. This video was great to point out the need for a balanced pre-load and the timing. Thank you. I'll be out working on it this afternoon:)

Booker T best piece of advice I ever got is keep speed in check pedals level and make sure you adjust how far ahead you look on trail for speed you carrying looking at front tire will cause major unbalance and to far ahead also will cause issues as your body will react to soon also trust your bike lean back a little and let off the brake for the really rough stuff
Awesome video - really clear and concise don’t have any problem getting my bike to pop just not sure if what to do with that energy & this will really help to make the jumping thing something I do deliberately not just by accident!! Those last jumps where awesome you’re killing it!!!

It was very helpful to point out that you are pressing the bike down evenly with your legs… not your arms, and not leaning down to meet the bike, but all the power is through the legs.
Best advice I can give - ignore anyone who tells you 'just go fast and pull up hard' !!!! unless you want to die real quick (includes some you tube tutorials from pros - some pros are so naturally awesome they find it hard to relate to the basics that mere mortals need to start with) yeah, once you've got it dialled and can properly send you will want more speed on bigger jumps and there are certainly situations where you'll want to pull, but try the go fast and pull hard method when learning and you'll be dead sailoring in no time, it'll be game over for those lovely 'single piece collar bones' you were born with!
The one thing I rarely if ever hear the experts refer to is holding the compression till you reach the lip. If the compression is released slightly early all kinds of things can go wrong. A good tutorial on holding the compression would probably help a lot of people. The video show me great advice how to jump and I was able to gain some nice air today on my local trails :D I'm not new to mountain biking just haven't biked in over 2 years and feel a bit rusty on the trails. Beth did a great job at making this video. You two are a great team, cute couple, and you guys have me as a new subscriber :)
Great video even better jumping progression! You made it look so easy.
Thank you! At least it looked easy 😅🤣 - Beth
Thanks Beth good video and I am just learning how to jump and your video couldn’t have come out at a better time, i am doing a bunch of practice tonight on some jumps with some friends they were going to help me learn to jump. Thanks again.
Glad to hear it’s helpful! Ben is a great teacher. Good luck tonight! - Beth
Nice job on the video, Beth. And nice job learning new things in front of a camera. The clip of you a few weeks later is actually really impressive. Keep it up.
I think the best tip I've heard on learning how to jump was to watch this video.
...now I'm gonna go get me some air 👍🏽
I reckon this is the best, most concise introduction to jumping I have seen. Thanks heaps.
I've found the best way to practice jumping is when I'm commuting and see a lip on the sidewalk or just a speed bump. Speed bumps are perfect as they are just like small tabletops.
Perfect for practicing that bunny hop! - Beth
Just had a lesson with Ben! He's awesome. Great video! He helped me improve on A-line!
Beth is looking great! She has obviously worked hard to get in shape.
Congratulations Beth!
Thanks 💪 💪 💪- Beth
For avgeeks
Before you jump calculate your V1 and VR
Helped me
I will try it, but I am afraid I will end up at Vso... And down I go...
Ahhaahah
What if I hit windshear at VR? Just pedal as fast as I can?
Positive rate... gear up.
mattvgyo positive rate maxxis DHF’s up
Great video Beth!! Both the jumping progression and the editing 😊. It's great to see more women MTBers on UA-cam! Keep it up!!
Sprocket Girl I agree! Nice job Beth!
That was awesome Beth did that! And when, the few weeks later part of her clearing those tables was hella great! My best advice for jumping is to fast and pull up! What's the worst that could happen? Lol
Thank you! I don’t know about that advice 😂 - Beth
Great Job Beth and keep it up I too have issues with this, Mainly just because i get into my head too much and not a kid anymore but its something to work on for me as well. Glad you are joining Ryan with this passion for MTBing along with your kiddos you guys are going to be a family of shredders!!
Thanks! So much of biking is a head game. Some days worse than others 😅 I’d love to be as fearless as the kids. Im sure mine are going to surpass me in no time! 🍻 - Beth
MASSIVE help I was pushing down with my arms not legs I love you lot ❤❤❤
Yesss. Always struggled with jumps. Cool vid!
Me too! Ben’s tips really helped! - Beth
@@TheLoamRanger Would the compress still work with a hard tail? (yes im still rocking one lol) or should the front forks be the focus? Just keen to hit a trail to practice! haha
@Sam Rekulak Thanks Sam!
Awesome video Beth!! Representing the girls! 💕💕
Thanks ☺️ - Beth
The Loam Ranger Yeah girl!! ☺️🤙
Went to Mountain Creek, Killington and Trestle and just couldn't figure it out. Watched this video and the rear vs front compression differences really helped cause I kept bucking and it was in my head. Kept practicing and just this past weekend I cleared everything on Rainmaker (which btw is running super smooth rn). Thx!
Im "Beginner Jumper" but Speed, fast is what i want & the "lip" of the Jump, right at the tipy-top . .. ..sometimes it ain't my kinda Jump so i make my own or find one that suits me☺and Jump it. So far this is my Progress but I'll have to ride my way up too you. You're "Killing it" . ....
That’s a great way to progress. Nice work! 🤟 - Beth
Excellent vid Beth! Don't forget step 6. PRACTICE!!
So right! Thanks! 🤟 - Beth
Awesome! It is great that Beth is progressing like that! I hope to see more vids or her own channel
Thanks! Definitely more vids to come. I don’t think I can swing my own channel yet 😅🍻 - Beth
Ok, I needed this. Really useful stuff.
Glad it’s helpful! - Beth
Wow. Congratulations on your progression!
Killer video! Great job. Will take these lessons out on my next ride.
By the way, nice production! Awesome video and superb explanations!
Watching all this useful content and impatiently waiting for my tendon to heal so I can learn to jump this summer.
Glad we can help keep you entertained while you’re on the mend! Hope you heal up quick! - Beth
this is an excellent quick easy tutorial
Strong work Beth! Great video.
NICE video beth . Your skill and fitness are showing!! great work ! you look amazing! What a family!
Thank you for the kind words ☺️ - Beth
*best jumping tutorial video on youtube*
Wow! Thanks 🤟 - Beth
Stomp! is the word I learned for the compression phase down through the middle of the bike.
Makes sense!
It was very helpful to point out that you are pressing the bike down evenly with your legs… not your arms, and not leaning down to meet the bike, but all the power is through the legs.
Best advice I can give - ignore anyone who tells you 'just go fast and pull up hard' !!!! unless you want to die real quick (includes some you tube tutorials from pros - some pros are so naturally awesome they find it hard to relate to the basics that mere mortals need to start with)
yeah, once you've got it dialled and can properly send you will want more speed on bigger jumps and there are certainly situations where you'll want to pull, but try the go fast and pull hard method when learning and you'll be dead sailoring in no time, it'll be game over for those lovely 'single piece collar bones' you were born with!
Just going fast will get you over some smaller jumps but I don’t think you can really progress that way... I’m no expert though 🤷♀️ - Beth
@@TheLoamRanger I agree 100%!!!!!
Should have watched this before I nearly killed myself..
Hope it helps now 😬
Great video! I need to try weighting evenly into the takeoff instead of front wheel first.
The one thing I rarely if ever hear the experts refer to is holding the compression till you reach the lip. If the compression is released slightly early all kinds of things can go wrong. A good tutorial on holding the compression would probably help a lot of people. Oh ya Emountainbikes are not a crime! 😃 My YT Decoy is just a badass bike and at 62 yrs old it keeps me on the trail ten times longer. The true crime is other folks worrying about it.
Thanks for the video guys! I'm learning to jump at the moment and this video reinforced some important tips. Keep living it up :)
Good to hear it was helpful! Thanks 🍻 - Beth
Great vid! Nice explanation! I'll def be trying those techniques! Keep up the good work. And congrats Beth on your first vid!
Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it. 🍻 - Beth
I just hit big jumps at my bike park this morning for the first time and this gets uploaded. Haha
That’s awesome! I love practicing at the jump park 🤟
Currently nursing a mashed ankle cos I tackled a biggish jump badly on the weekend. Should have watched this first.
Thank you! Thank you! The video I was looking for! Well done and explained
Thanks for an awesome video! I'm learning too and there are a lot of how too's but nothing as clear and concise as this. Great job Beth!
🤯 thank you! - Beth
Finally someone explained it were I actually picked up on it.
Thanks for the video..
So glad it made sense! Ben is a great teacher! - Beth
You made progress really quick! I suck at jumps.... But I'll admit I never work on them either.
I’d definitely rather ride trails than practice any skills 😂 - Beth
I’m not a master of jumping but I’d just say let it happen, don’t tense up, be relaxed as you go over it, because my first jump I just relaxed and went through the motions, and landed on two wheels, and didn’t fall
That’s awesome! I wouldn’t describe my first time going over a jump as relaxed 😅 but I’m sure it would help! - Beth
What about jumping a hardtail? Not everyone has the luxury of just squashing their suspension to the floor 😂
More technique and skill on hardtail, I use hardtail because I want to go faster =)
Leg power is one thing, regular bunnyhop and using the bike nose is how I do it.
but this tutorial is pretty close.

Just search "how to jump on A mountain bike" and try find what you like =)
I have a 26" BMX and it kills MTB.
@@AGZenith I haven't done much practice, but I can't bunny hop well; my bike is really really long and slack so I struggle with getting the front wheel up manual style. I can jump, it's just a confidence thing to start doing bigger ones
@@lylaaxiom8750 I think full sus bikes to hardtail are like clipless pedals to flats; they take some of the skill out of riding and make it easier
@@chrisw5742 No suspension means you know where to put your tires.
Free jump lessons! Sweet! Thanks! Good job, Beth!
Thank you! Ben is a great teacher 🍻- Beth
6. dont go too big too fast! this usually ends in shoulder injury XD
Oh no, sounds like you’ve experienced this. 😵 Hope you are all healed up!
and don't go too fast too soon lol. Yes, healing from a comminuted clavicle fracture is going to be a setback both physically and mentally.
Awesome video well done on the production. Spot on👌👌
Nicely done ✅. Beth is a shooting star 🌠 for sure ! I noticed Beth’s steerer tube is about an inch too long. That could sure crack a sternum or something if a wreck occurred. Not trying to be negative but I don’t want you to get hurt or extra hurt from that protruding steerer🍻
Thanks for heads up! I cut the steerer tube just last week, finally. You’re right definitely a hazard 😅 - Beth
Beginner me thanks you. Great clear content to practice.
This was a great video! I live in Williams Lake BC and there’s a lot of steep and often dry trails here.
Can you do a how to ride said terrain particularly when coming into hair pin turns. Thanks!
Thanks! That’s a great idea and definitely something I need to work on! - Beth
This is really my favourite Channel!
Thanks for your nice Videos,
it is very enlightening,
I am going to share with my friends.

Going from whistler to Canmore. Going to ride the Nordic center today

Wow, really impressed with progression.
Loved Beths video !
Great job on your first video..
