I have electric kit cymbals but I’m subscribed so haha no cymbals for you Stephen
@@judecrawford2351 Don't make me come steal your power cords.
Very funny Stephen...
THANK YOU!
In my adolescence, it took me a month to figure this out by ear... From there I had the freedom to apply it in half-time feels sporadically.
Fun fact, I played the Eulogy groove for one of my midterms at MI and the students that knew the beat freaked out, lol. My instructor kinda shook his head and said "I don't remember putting any Tool in the curriculum"
Love it!
Tool is always on the curriculum.
I love this !
Fear Curriculum ❤️
I don't ever remember it not being on the curriculum, except when the curriculum was ruled by some fascist overlord
The first danny carey groove i learned was the main beat to sober, which once you get down the syncopation, is super fun to play.
That's a great one to start with. It was my first. Danny Carey beat to learn too. The fill in that song though...
I learned vicarious first then lateralus and the sober and after that lots more. Keep playing man:)
I am learning pneauma right now the first tool song I have ever attempted.
I just got drums yesterday and am already working on the sober groove because it’s just that tasty
@@EMAN-tx7lp I have played buckets a practice pad and backpacks (my feet for bass) for a year. I am getting a drum set for Christmas. I will have to pretty much restart. If you would like to see the list of songs I am learning here they are.
1.Sober:Tool
2.Tom saywer:Rush
3.The unforgiven: Metallica
4.Toxcicity: System of a Down
5.46 and 2:Tool
Some nice beginner songs 😂.
I'm still trying to learn eulogy's polyrhythm. I've been self taught for 10 years. Because I'm self taught I learned open handed and always played by ear. Now I've discovered Tool and want a teacher.
You don’t need a teacher, just learn sheet music reading and look up the music for it
Love this! Another great groove is the interlude in “Lateralus” in where he plays in 5/4. Hi-Hat swipes, four bass drum notes back to back, it’s got everything!
Mitchell Collard Music sick groove mate
the moment you hear these beats you immediately hear the rest of the song in your head, that's why Danny is so special. he has truly unique beats for every song, they can be very complicated beats but still they always complete the song so perfectly. he's such a telented composer
P.S. Danny said in an interview that he's playing a 8th note ostinato for eulogy bridge part this version sounds so sick tho 🤟. the original is a little bit easier to get down surprisingly
He once said he doesn't want to play beats, he wants to play songs, you're dead on!
My first Danny beat was the Schism one, I learned after playing drums for about a month, I beat my head against that song until it made sense.
Probably the best decision I ever made
Everyone's gonna click as fast as they can
I've gotten TONS of requests for a lesson on some of his stuff over the years.
That section in eulogy took me ages to learn. It was my real introduction to using polyrhythmic grooves.
Just when I was starting to feel a little confident in my drumming
Don't feel bad dude...this is pretty advanced. I imagine if you can play Danny's stuff, you can play just about everything!
Dude don’t feel bad it took me a couple of months to get good enough to cover TOOL. And by a couple of months I mean like 9-10 months. I have now been paying for a little over a year and am working on 46and2 now
@@yeetfeet1878 im working on parabola rn, the beginning beat is such a fuckinf banger but its actually not too hard suprisingly
@@mookibois9784 yeah the beginning beat is pretty cool actually.
@@yeetfeet1878 its like the only 4/4 beat that danny has lmao
Schism is basically a combination of 5/8 and 7/8. (1-2, 1-2-3) (1-2, 1-2, 1-2-3)
I read an article years ago where I think Danny called it "compounded time" where he separated the groove into an alternating pattern of 5/8 and 7/8. Made it so much easier to learn for me.
@@gooseliver9 to me its easier to learn the beat by just listening to the song a lot. worked for me, just exactly knowing how its supposed to be sounding then it’s just playing it.
@@lerakxkorb That's exactly what I did. I didn't even know how to count when I learned the song lol. I didn't learn how to count it out until afterwards.
Great video, with the passing of Neil Peart, Danny is now the greatest drummer alive, imo
Even when he was alive, danny was still the greatest, imo.
1:20 eulogy 6:07 schism 10:46 bottom
thanks man
Every time I hear you play Eulogy I am dying for the guitar to come in haha!
When he did it at normal speed I sang that part in my head.
The way that guitar riff sits on the drum groove in you get this alternating thing where the kick and snare land always made me feel like it was inspired by (or a cool evolution) of that guitar/drums in Kashmir.
Danny is so creative. I love his grooves.
I'm a simple man, I see Danny Carey, I like... Eulogy and Schism are one of of my fave Tool songs...
Wouldn't they be two of your fave tool songs? 😉😆
@@YukonDemon Oh yeah thanks for correcting haha
I learned schism when I was 15 to preform with my band, which sent me on a chain reaction learning all tool songs😂 I'm 17 now and can play most tool songs. I highly recommend tool to learn as a drummer, it made me so much better
Can you play the beginning of reflection?
@@themightyxapher5885 yep! Its a nice groovy pattern across the toms that is pretty straight forward once you figure it out
@2863 how I learned it because I wasn't in lessons, was I watched a bunch of UA-camrs cover it and I slowed the video down all the way, very slowly learning it piece by piece
I highly doubt you can play all of their songs.
@@schism47 as I said I can play most. I have tried learning some but I am not good enough yet, and I have had to write my own simpler parts for some sections of some songs. But, I can play many songs as they were written.
Danny's big on layering 3s over stuff, which was perfect for me when I discovered Tool because I was always trying to do that, and their music made the perfect too- I mean, implement, with which to develop that. I've gotten pretty adept at it now; bonus points for the odd time signatures, which is another thing I've always really liked.
great video man, thank you for your lessons!
Awesome video Stephen! Some of us never get tired of Danny Carey lesson videos! Thanks for that, drumming brother!
Awesome instruction on this video for incredible drum beats!!🔥👊
Great! I`ll dig into it first thing tomorrow😉 best break down I have seen of these sections. Thanks Stephen😉
This is awesome. Makes so much sense and having the sheet music too is great. Thanks man
Great vid! Bottom is such a good groove at nearly every part.
Really helps with you counting us through the beats vs just replicating the sound. So helpful ! Thanks
Great drum lesson. Great choice as well, Danny Carey is such an amazing and influential drummer. He is so unique in the way he plays and he is so interesting and he is always coming up with new ideas. I love his work and I love *attempting* to play it. Currently working on pneuma, really fun song. Keep up the great work. Hopefully we can look forward to some more TOOL.
Danny said in an interview that the Eulogy beat was straight 16s opening every third one and closing on the fourth. I know that's basically what you were doing, but the way he said it made it sound like he was striking every note
Also: You should look at Chad Kent from Atomship. He has some insane grooves
Bottom actually came up in my mind earlier today! At that time it took me a few moments to even realize it was a Tool song I was thinking of and I couldn't recall the title to save my life. I very rarely even have this on when I listen to Tool, so that's funny how it's one of your picks for a video uploaded the very same day. Strange case of Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon, hah
More on-topic: as an amateur drummer I've always been eluded by the Eulogy beat, but your video has inspired me to give it another try. Great stuff!
bottom is SUCH an underrated and under appreciated song. that and 4 degrees
We gotta have a part 2 of this, that was awesome!
Yes!! I'm so happy you made this video Stephen! Thank you!
You bet my friend
Awesome job Stephen! Thank you man! I remember asking awhile back if you were ever going to do Danny Carey or Tim Alexander and you said they were both coming. I have a seriously difficult time with anything that I can't start on "one". After watching the video I understand one reason Danny's stuff gives me hell. Is that considered "displacement"? I'm trying to understand some of the more advanced concepts lately...I wonder how I could practice getting away from starting on "one"? The 2 guys I mentioned seem to have a knack for hitting every beat that I usually wouldn't play!
this in an excellent explanation video of grooves, please more grooves
I always thought of Schism as 5/8 and 7/8 alternating... maybe 6/4 is easier to digest
Yes,it's 5 and 7 actually !I don't get what Stephen is counting!
@@sokp9751 He is counting 5 and 7 as 12/8, so 6/4.
Awesome lesson. Thank you! 🙏🏼
You bet anthony!
One of my favorites (that you can do with ease) is the bridge section in flood roughly at the 6 minute mark. He’s perfection man.
Thanks for the eulogy tutorial. Couldn't ever get it quite right. I was close but knew something was quite right. Was playing it with the sober high hat rythym. Sloppily lol. New sub!
Also chorus from Lateralus is pretty possible and very fun to play, even with one crash and one-two toms
Very cool. You got that tool snare sound on Schism there 👌🏽
The hihat to crash stuff you were doing on schism was great. But remember. His hihat is dead in the middle of his kit on a remote cable thing. Lol so he probably does all that a little different. And bottom is my all time favorite tool song. Such an underrated gem. There was some amazing drumming on that whole album.
Love the groove in bottom during Henry Rollins’ narration. Same type of groove your teaching here
I love you for posting this
This lesson is awesome!! Thanks a lot! Please do a bit of Barriemore Barlow sometime. He is very underrated but he was amongst the favourite drummers and/or friend of Danny Carey, John Bonham, Terry Bozzio, John Tempesta, Jonathan Mover and many more.
Cool, he is one of my favorite drummers.
THANK YOU HES MY FAVOURITE. :D
You did an awesome job breaking down the beats from one of my favorite drummers! Have you ever considered doing a video of Gavin Harrison beats too?
Thanks for this.
I play guitar, don't know much about drums but this was absolutely fascinating...and extremely difficult to emulate! Haha. 🤘
Good job
This is SO HARD (Eulogy)! My limbs are staging a protest against this pattern..lol! 😆🥁🎧 As a nice side effect my version of Sober is getting better though...🤔
Love that Schism groove breakdown, apparently I learned it correctly~
Could you do the song "The Pot" breakdown in the future? That verse groove is super tasteful and syncopated and I at least can't quite make out what's going on lol (the bridge is amazing and fun too)
Watch and reconsider your statement on "you learnd Schism correctly" ;-) Video " Artist Spotlight: Danny Carey (part 1/3) "
Thank you so so much- my favourite band!!! I thought it would be at least another decade before I play any Carey, but maybe I'll have a little go :)
You bet
Stephen you are a master of breaking these beats down. Do you instinctual learn by ear and break the lesson down after or do you find breaking down first works best? I would imagine charting out the hi hat and snare in the Eulogy polyrhythm as you did would be the only way for me to learn it.
I've been attempting to play this beat for as long as I have been attempting to play the drums
I WANT TO ANOTHER TOP 3 DANNY CAREY'S GROOVE
Yaaay, my fav drummer ^^
Hey great drumming. Danny Carey is my favorite drummer and tool Is my favorite band. Can you please play the beat on "Parabola" at 2:47 seconds. It's one of my favorites. Thank you.
Thank you Neil Pert!! And John Bonham and Buddy Rich. You are a great drummer. Easy to always mimic someone
See my response to your other comment. Both are quite uninformed IMHO. Respect
@@StephenTaylorDrums I said you are a great drummer, there was no disrespect there. I was saying because of drummers like Neil Pert and John Bonham, they are influential and people mimic them and there playing styles.
Very good helsinki..
It only took me the better part of 20 years out of 32 to finally figure out the beat that’s played in the verse of Undertow. It never occurred to me until very recently that I could have been watching videos on UA-cam and gotten a much quicker understanding of quite a few things with playing the drums. Better late than never, I guess?
First of all thank you for making a video about Danny, my favorite and the most underrated drummer.
is it Tama Starphonic Brass snare you play in this video?
Thank you! And yes. It is
Just throwing this here but how about some Steve Jordan groove lessons? I would like to learn his grooves on Vultures and Belief
Can you do a video like this on fill (or even beats) But of Roger Taylor? He’s one of my favorite drummers!!
Great lesson, Stephen! Danny is one of my all-time favourites. Is there any way you could explain and play the part in Tool's Rosetta Stoned from the 10,000 Days album? (7'06"-8'36") I know it contains a lot of epads but the polyrhythm is still beyond me to pull off at this moment. Greetz from Frederik - Belgium!
Yo! I think its 16th note paradiddles on 2 different drums in 3/4. the snare is on 3, so you need to change which hand you're hitting the snare with each time you hit the snare. Apart from that, he starts adding drums that he is doing the paraddidles on, but mainly its those two main drums which kinda sounds like really high toms or some tribal percussion things. but basically practice paradiddles on the two toms in front of you while hitting the snare with rlrr lrll Rlrr lrll rlrr Lrll - Like that. Then add the kick pattern in.
Check out John Kew's video of Rosetta Stoned, he does a stellar job!
I always worked Schism in 12/8
Broken into a 5 and 7
Those are some fire beats
You’re really good at it man.
Thanks for all you do, you’ve helped me out a lot
I’m self taught at the drums and your videos definitely helped me out a lot
I just wish I could be as good as you one day
Thank you my friend. Makes my day to know the lessons have helped so much!
Nice.
James Gadson,,,he has some great pocket yet fun beats.
Bottom is such an underrated track!
What’s up Stephen? It’s Wade from C&M Music in Hattiesburg. It’s really good to see you. Looking good my friend.
What up wade!
3:39 kinda sounds like the main drum thing for pushit a little bit lol
I believe schism actually alternates between 5/8 and 7/8 (1 2 1 2 3 1 2 1 2 1 2 3). it doesn’t really matter but that’s what I’ve heard and to me it feels better to count that way.
I found this interesting, Schism: I was able to play this by listening to it but, with your explanation, it confused the hell out of me lol. But I also leaned drums on my own by listening to the music and playing it. A.D.D. is a weird monster lol.
Great stuff like always. Hey quick question Stephen, what type hi hat stand do you use
I use an tama iron cobra hihat stand
Yeah me too. 600 series and I can't get mine adjusted right. I think I broke the piece the hihats sit on becuz I can't adjust the angle
It came with a spring loaded seat, the spring seems to be stretched, but i got it sounding better. Tama still my fav
This is a great video however there are a couple minor mistakes that I found which I would like to correct quickly. Around 2:00 you refer to a closed hi-hat note as a rest. This is not true, a rest is the absence of sound. The click sound of the hi-hats closing would still be considered a note. The second issue I would like to address is the time signature for Schism. 6/4 does work.... however using 5/8 and 7/8 alternating is much nicer to read. When the song is written in the alternating time signatures it has the ending triplet on the hi-hat fall on beats 5 and 7.
"The bass drum is where things get harry" ..me, struggling with the first snare hit. (Only been playing drums seriously for a year, started because if Danny Carry, may quit because of Danny carry)
Thank you! Great lesson. That Eulogy polyrhythm makes my brain hurt.
Stay safe, Bubinga
Yes, yes, YES! Thank you!!!!
Schism is alternating 5/8 and 7/8 which equals 12/8 or 6/4
Cool stiufff man
Furmans “funny drum lessons” does a good lesson on this groove 😂
Is that a sm57 on your snare?
Lateralus, at 5:38,
What else!
The part in "7empest" when he finally opens it up on the china, right after that "a tempest will be just that" build...
Liked the video before watching. Not only because of Tool.
Danny Carrey is just an insane drummer. I really want to play some of his beats. This video will definitely be my guide. So thanks, also I enjoy your videos🙌🏻
Didn't know astrofysics ain't the toughest one to crack.. i literally do not understand shit of this.. xD But it sounds great when Tool plays, that is all i need! :D
nice job! here comes a little bit of smart-arse...: In the explanation of beat 2 (Schism) I would like to offer a correction: at beat 3 and 6 and I would not speak from 3 beats of a sextuplet but name it a sixteenth note triplet........
It's the same thing man
Please do a Steve Jordan video!!!! Or Jason McGerr!!!!
I feel this need an update with ‘Pneuma’.
Isn't Schism alternating between 5/8 and 7/8, for a lot of the song that is
technically, its all the same. you could say its 12/8 or even 6/4
Isn't the Eulogy beat technically a polymeter and not a polyrhythm? Not trying to be a knowitall I'm genuinely curious because I've always thought of it as a polymeter and even used it as an example to distinguish between the two. I mean it's obvious that there are 2 different repeating patterns but that could be said about many things that aren't necessarily polyrhythm, right? Thanks in advance.Awesome lesson as always, Stephen! :)
EDIT: I mean because the hi-hat is more of an accent and the repeating pattern only fills 3/4 of 1 beat of the measure of 4 that is the driving rhythm of the groove as a whole, and so isn't that a little "countably vague", if you will, to qualify as a separate rhythm in this circumstance?
So most of us are familiar why Maynard writes in odd timing, but what is Carry’s story? Did he accommodate with these out-of-this-world beats, or has he always been an odd beat player?
Most recent albums the band recorded the music then sent it to Maynard to record vocals over. Danny Carey cites Bill Bruford and King Crimson as one of his major influences so yeah, he has always been an odd time kinda guy 😁
just a quick heads up ... the button on your site that says "YES, SEND IT TO ME NOW!" is not working unfortunately for some reason :(
It's way easier to count schism as a measure of 5/8 followed by a measure of 7/8 ...... 12-123-12-12-123.
My 3. Enema. Laterus. Tom Sawyer
All this time I thought Schism was in 5/8 and 7/8, then transition to 6/8. Is it actually in 6/4? I am wow
Aiden Kelly 5/8+7/8 = 12/8 divided by 2 = 6/4. Not one way is the right way to understand it or learn it I guess if that makes sense but just figured I could clear it up and help you figure it out
3:18 Man I was born confused, what you talking about? lol
How'd you know?
i'm never gonna perfect that Eulogy part.....ever!
