  • Can She Handle This Horse Hooves? She Learns A Few Tricks
Frankie is learning to care for her new horse which includes trimming and caring for her hooves. We had a friend come over who does all of his own work on his horse and teach her how to trim and shape her horses barefoot hooves. It is a lot of work and while it might be easier to have a farrier come and do it... If you can learn to do it yourself it is worth it. But don't get behind that hoof!
We also talk in this video a little bit about the barbed wire fence everyone is so worried about and what the plan is for that.

Your fence is your fence build the way you see fit. If anyone has a problem with to bad they didn’t build it or pay for it so there options don’t matter. Another thing is barbed wire has been used for hundreds of years so what’s the real issue

@@robertdavis5163 so I’ve grown up on a farm where we have 15 horses and all of our fences are barbed wire. And been that way since my great grandfather put them up. Barbed wire fence’s are tools to show a horse there boundaries and if you’re so worried about someone else property or animals then you send them a check to have it replaced. And them go to court and have barbed wire outlawed. But we all know that’s not going to happen so will just leave it at that

@robertdavis5163 horses bolt through slick wire, too. Those types are typically either hot blooded or a neurologic issue. This horse appears to be neither.
Accidents happen at the very best set-ups also. I lost a 6 month old foal that was at a World Class QH facility. She was running playing and misjudged a stop and hit the pipe fence. Broke her neck and my heart.

Seen more horse sliced by high tensile that the electric has went out on then ever cut by barb wire. Big outfits I’ve day worked use almost exclusively Barb wire and I’ve never seen one horse injured by walking through it because it don’t happen. As soon as they know electrics not hot they will walk right through the fucking stuff and high tensile is like a razor when it’s tight.

Hi guys so happy for you all with your new horse she is beautiful I owned horses for around 40+ years and but I may I make a suggestion the horse's hoofs are so very very important to the health of your horse and I suggest that you let a professional do your horse do to you can lame your horse and run into alot of problems it is worth the extra money for a professional you can look up about the horse's hoofs on alot of sites just a suggestion and if you want to do her feet there are schools you can attend 😊 and I have a farrier out every 6to8 weeks if you're riding 😊 just my suggestion blessings

Farriers aren’t that expensive. Horses should get trimmed every 4-6 weeks in spring and summer and 6-10 weeks in fall and winter. Trimming to frequently can cause issues and undo soreness. A farrier cost to trim a barefoot horse is usually around $65-$75. I would get a farrier to try to fix the cracks in your horses hooves first then if you want to do the upkeep then go from there.

Please flatten the ends of the twisted wire. After raising horses for 30 years, trust me when I say they will find anything pokey. They will take out an eye or gouge themselves. They are a fright and flight animal so good idea to tie flags on all the wire.
As far as feet, have a pro do a good trim.

Good advice. That's something I always do too. The flag advice was very good, whoever suggested that. It's scary how many ways a horse can hurt themselves. I always am thinking "Now how could my horse hurt themselves."
And please new horse owners... learn about signs of colic & how to take vital signs, plus make yourselves a simple first aid kit & put your vet number in your phone. Hate to be a downer, but it's just what happens with horses. Good neighbor knowing about horses is a blessing.

A suggestion, order you a radius rasp. It has a curved edge to round off the edges of her hooves. It helps to neaten them up and prevent chipping. Also the hoof knives you buy are NOT pre sharpened. They really need to be sharpened before use, this makes them much easier to use, it does however make it easier to cut yourself so just be cautious. You can buy beginner hoof sets at Tractor Supply to get started. Best of luck

There's some excellent books out the Mark Rashid has written some fantastic books that are easy to read as well as informative and entertaining.
I didn't grow up on a farm. I had a horse for a few years and have been riding horses since I was five.
I'm sorry you didn't know about the barbed wire. I know money doesn't grow on trees. Horses can hurt themselves on any fence. A huge vet bill is also expensive, probably more expensive than replacing the fence. Go an have a chat to your local horse rescue place, they will give you the best information.

We also did barefoot trim ourselves with our horses. My Dad got us 3 horses when I was a teenager (13 yo). He was raised with horses (farmer) & knew how. I trimmed mine for years when younger. Make sure you are up to date on your tetanus shots, as you WILL end up raking your thumbs with the rasp or something in the process eventually. I'm sure you'll get lots of advice. Now I have a professional barefoot trimmer, but then I'm over 50 years older than a teenager. Honestly, I should have used a professional a long time sooner. Cost is $60 a horse now & barefoot trimmer certified by Pete Ramey. Worth it, particularly since horses have arthritis and other issues. Dogs love the hoof trim bits, btw. - Be careful though on trying to do too much to cut corners on expenses. Is it worth it? Can you really do this yourself? Good luck! You are going to need 2 hands to cut with those nippers. Can soak the hoof ahead of time to make softer. You have a lot of learning ahead.
Excellent that you are doing safety release rope tying! And about rope handling when leading. What a nice quiet horse. Looks like a perfect horse so far for a teen. My parents got me a crazy mare with an untouched filly as my first horses. I learned a lot, but just lucky that I didn't get hurt as I learned.

I've had horses for over 50 years. I would call a farrier for your horse's trims. It takes one bad trim to mess up your horses' feet. I'm not saying a farrier can't do the same thing, as I've had that problem a time or two in 50 years. Find a good reputable farrier with lots of good references and keep him. My farrier for the last 20 years just retired this year. He recommended a new farrier, and he is very good as well. They take the whole horse into consideration when trimming or shoeing. Good luck with your horse. My daughter is an adult now and my 11 year old granddaughter has the horse bug. She has a small pony that is a been there done that, and she competes her in English hunters. She has a large pony that she uses for fun and trail rides western. Now she has started taking Driving Lessons and has her first combined driving show next week. She takes English, Western, and Driving Lessons each week. I liked your comment about boys. My daughters were too busy when they were young and found really good husbands. I wish Frankie all the best with Beulah.

Not seen hooves trimmed like this before, usually it's easier if you put the leg between your legs as it's more steady,
I'd say a farrier isnt just trained in trimming hooves and fitting shoes but has knowledge to recognize problems that may arise such as thrush and infections, I just think it's worth having someone who's trained to know the hoof inside out, the last thing you'd want is any damage coming to the hooves as without healthy feet you've just got an expensive ornament,

Great lesson to learn how to trim! And your fence is just fine. Horses can bolt and run into and through ANY type of fencing. In my experience, slick wire is actually more dangerous than barbed as it doesn't provide a correction and they will not respect it. I wouldn't tie up to any kind of wire fencing, especially if you are utilizing the time outs, which are also a great training method when done in a safe environment. You guys will learn so much as you go and looking like you already have a great foundation, knowledgeable friends, and neighbors.

What part of Mississippi are y’all in? We are starting a homestead in Kiln on 100 acres and I have been practicing so this year I will be starting UA-cam Channel Milk and Honey Homestead MS and have a journey of all projects and progress we make along the way. I was thinking if we were neighbors to say Welcome and I speak prosperity over your land and your family. I love seeing families move here

Your neighbor just showed Frankie a great knot!
I always had to put the horses leg between mine
I don't have the strength in my hands to use the nippers 1 handed.
With a toe crack like that I would take a extra nip to help it grow out.
What size cinch does Frankie need?

Agree on the importance of safety release ties. My barefoot trimmers always use 2 hands, plus there are hoof stands one can use to hold hoof up. They also request we soak the hooves ahead when been very dry, as hooves can get rock hard. -- Now need to learn about thrush & so many other things. It's a real learning journey underway in Mississippi now. -- I would rack back of my thumbs with the rasp too much, so started wearing leather gloves.

@@MegF142857 It's called a hoof jack. Very handy and Beulah would probably get used to it pretty quick as laid back as she is. They are expensive anymore though. Good suggestion.
They're not new to livestock. They also have a ton of resources at their fingertips and are meeting people that know how to handle horses.
I mean, they took her to the Vet before they even brought her home. That right there should tell everyone they only have the best of intentions.
Tips are great. I'm sure they appreciate any as long as they're done with good intentions. Such as yours.
I'm glad to watch the journey 😀

Great video guys. We had a bad experience with barbed wire. I had a horse that coliced. We were trying to get him to stand up and he stumbled and fell through the barbed wire. It cut the main aurtery in his leg and he bled to death in about 2 minutes. The cut was high up his leg where it meets his flank and i couldnt get a tourniquet on it. Just a freak accident.

Might be easier to use a farrier stand. When we had horses we used barb wire and had no problem at all. The horses had no cut or scrapes at all.

If you go to a wooden type fence use can buy a vinyl fence post and cross braces that will never rot. They come in white or wood looking.

I can only make a suggestion being from Central Queensland Australia 🇦🇺???
Never had a problem with barbed wire in my horse paddocks…
Slip wire as you call it (plain wire here in Oz) will cut a horse worse nd cause more injury than barbed wire does…

My property experience, Our night paddocks were only a couple hundred acres, horse paddock (?) maybe a couple thousand acres…???
That was seperate from the grazing/beef operations
