There were other games in this genre (like, hyper specific management with rival businesses, niches and customised detail into how everything works) but they're mostly just large as an ocean, shallow as a pool (fast food tycoon was one, if you'd count that.). I feel like the reason people moved away from it is because of the sims-4-ification of management games (get rid of all the features that are confusing or lag the game so anyone can play it, and the challenge comes from what restrictions you pose on yourself or in specific challenge scenarios.) I think as well since in the indie dev 'good game design' sphere people act like the objective truth is that every single game and every single mechanic, regardless of what it is, needs to be a blank placeholder template that can be swapped out with any asset at runtime, which is only really true if you're making an early access game with frequent content updates that should be compatible with each other, or if your studio has a lot of dedicated hyper specific experts who would benefit from just sending a zip folder over and the programmers can just replace a folder in the project. You know what I think? Embrace spaghetti code. Better to make something that's actually complete than to spend forever not quite completing something that's highly optimised. Games like this are what you get when you actually have your priorities straight, not going "um I will make tiers of upgrades a variable that can be up to 256 and each item will be allocated on the grid depending on rows and columns 🤓 with a scrollbar dynamically appeari-" no just make 3 tiers lmao.
