Model D rocks! I have it and the Poly D, both are really really good. Also worth mentioning Model D has a built in A tone reference you can use to tune if it drifts too much :)
If you can find an EXT Box the SE-02 is also a great option and well worth the extra cost IMHO. (I could not so I have a Model D) The extra capabilities add a lot while still keeping the simplicity. As others have mentioned Cat is also fantastic.
About the drifting oscillators's tuning, I suspect Behringer to have aimed at remaining true to the original! Having owned both (plus quite a number of French, German, Russian and Japanese clones), I have to say that the D remains the best at mimicking this idiosyncrasy. As for the original D, I replaced it with a Voyager in the early 2000s. None oscillator drift whatsoever but certainly a loss in efficient immediate simplicity.
As for the simplicity/workflow/sound quality/fidelity to the original, the other best fit among Behringer's range of vintage desktop clones is certainly the Cat. I think I even love it better than the model D.
I have 9 behringer pieces in my studio, and am looking at adding more. The solina, pro-800,looking tasty to me! I enjoy the model d. Great synth. Different ones for different places. I have found the pro 1 to be more playable in the low notes. I really enjoy the sounds of so many. And if im correct i believe leaving it on, for like 30 min or more lowers the drift. I could be wrong though, i remember there being a trick. But also when im tracking it out im rarely playing it non stop through the whole track, i probably have 20 synths all connected at once, plus 5-6 drum machines, multiple sub mixers routed to my interface. (Hd a/d converter). Also have a a few hybrid set ups with different configs to do everything without any computer or daw, using either sequencers or my novation sl mk3 (love that thing, i been pushing its limits.) kinda funny tho, i end up just tracking it out eventually in a computer anyways 😂 but idk, fun to find different ways to run the machines. I also use a mpc live but they could use some external midi sequencing updates. Never ran as smooth as my sl so, i would usually just run it as external rather than master. 🤷🏼♂️ it also runs through a sub mixer to get a better sound. The model d has a distinct sound, and i love it. But to me, its like the gateway synth! Its like once you master the model d, you then have the understanding and ability to run most synths!!! I will say, the arps may** be a exception to that rule (both the 2600 and oddy). And perhaps the cat too, slightly different architecture but once you get both! Man, its like any synth after you will fully get. And i have used and own many. That model d, to me is the start of a wonderful world of learning audio science, sound design, and also synthesis. After you fully wrap your head around it, you want more. Then you start to study waveforms, frequencies, notes, and tuning multiple synths together. If your recording vocals and mixing and mastering too, pretty soon you look up, and your like a sound scientist no joke. Its a wonderful journey. And to me, the model d really is the gateway synth. Mr. Moog was genius, and behringer is really dope for making it accessible to the masses in its purest form while giving tremendous value for the dollar. It does not have the output gain of say my little phatty, but you can make up for that in post, but man, it is and has been one of my all time favorite synths. Even before the boog came out, it was the model d that truly taught me synthesis and sound design. To see it so available now, it amazing. I watched from the post in gear sluts and followed for a couple years wondering if they would accomplish, what people like me really wanted. So far, im have been more than impressed. He not only answered so many peoples dreams, but he lived up to his word. Uli delivered so hard that its been amazing. Korg sorta got it, but fell off and never was fully on the analog bandwagon. Roland just missed the buss. Cool advancing digital technology but there’s a old rule. If its bot broke, dont fix it. Roland was dope when they gave quality components. Period. Behringer nailed it with their clones and attention to the detail with the sound. My dream synth will be the ds-80 (if they nail it) i have wanted a cs-80 my entire life. So far, i have nailed synth sounds i never thought possible. Im beyond greatful and love what they do. Music is for everyone. And they understand what we want. Period. And they way he set it up, its pretty amazing im not even gonna lie, even down to the chip making company and midas. It is one of the best strategies that ended up helping the actual consumer with better end products in the end. And to see how far they have come. Man…. As a studio owner, im very grateful.
You're 100% correct a warm up slows down the drift. I agree Uli has not lied at all and has 100% changed the game in a good way for the consumer. The collector side of the scene has been kicking and screaming but I never really understood it because it won't effect the price of the units they own. I do like what modern Roland is doing too. I think it mixes good with Behringer units. The cleaner VA'ish sound of modern roland blends well with the true analog Behringer units. Thank you for the detailed comment and support of the content, hope you have a good day
@@toddsmithmusic3172 of course man! I watch all the good channels!! And i hear ya, idk i have 3 boutiques and the tr-8s. Their digital recreation of the Jupiter is the biggest let down. The tr-8s collects dust even compared to my behringer 808 clone! Inthink i play my akai rhythm wolf more! Lol idk i have a real roland 505 and its super dope. The snappy snare and latin analog percussion is dope! Im not a big fan of this digital sounds. Rolands juno recreations were their best ones to me. Otherwise i like my yamaha reface cs and nord lead 2x way more. But idk man, once you get a plethra of analog, the digital becomes way less attractive imo. I feel like roland is selling us cheap components that sound horrible with good programming that tricks consumers into thinking its better than it is. If they put better sound hardware out i would respect them way more. Like why cant Roland make a reasonably priced analog jupiter??? They cant evolve and update their hardware tech ?? They are the original builders, but as a company they missed it. Imo. Behringer got this part right. Listen to the Jupiter from the 80’s and tell me which modern synth matches up? None! They lost qaulity, and customers. They have had 50 years to figure out what Uli actually accomplished. Same with korg. For me, its been many years of let downs. Why cant roland make a modern analog 808? Or 909? Or even hit some of those wonderful circuts of the 70’s? You know….. cool, they want the digital, offer that too! But imo, they super fell off and started selling junk. 🤷🏼♂️ i hate how thin the digital stuff is, as a producer. Maybe a cool lead here and there but thats it. Less flexibility. After getting 9 Behringer analog pieces, i notice my digital synths get way less play. Keep in mind i also own the korg arp oddy, and the ms-20 mini (wonderful machines). Idk im bored with Roland right now and have been ever since i realized how much junk their boutique lines were. Its like they finally woke up to what we wanted and gave us plug ins in a box. I want the real thing. Nothing replaces the electricity going thru those circuits. Digital = you hear it. Analog = you hear AND feel it!!
The Model D is certainly a classic in its own right. I had always wanted a Minimoog, but they have always been so expensive and must continued getting more expensive. Funny enough though, as a teenager, I used to see Minimoogs being sold for $250 (here in Australia, say around 1990-92) but I had no money then! By my early 20s, a vintage unit was around $3500-4000, obviously a lot more than that now!
Excellent video as always, I would love to watch some videos on the crave!
I have a few up but will do new ones very soon !
Model D rocks! I have it and the Poly D, both are really really good. Also worth mentioning Model D has a built in A tone reference you can use to tune if it drifts too much :)
Yes, that does help for sure !

Most def a deeper machine. They nailed the drift for sure, lol. I bet you're right about Behringer's choice in keeping it
When I hear your music, for some reason, I'm always thinking about the 1997 space sci-fi movie "Event Horizon."
I do enjoy that movie
If only I had the space! My compromise is patching the 904A VCF into my Neutron. More like a super-Crave though than a D.
As for the simplicity/workflow/sound quality/fidelity to the original, the other best fit among Behringer's range of vintage desktop clones is certainly the Cat. I think I even love it better than the model D.
Cat is a great one for sure !
Octave Cat was the first synth I touched. Great synth but sadly like many other great synths I can't justify the Behringer for space reasons. 😢

Its a mono synth. How can you play chords?

OG versions are bonkers in terms of price for sure. They nailed a classic sound and workflow which stands up today. Thank you for the story
200 euro used for 95% of a mini Moog. Just a no brainer.
Model d no es un minimoog es otro instrumento
Nice deal !
I have the Model D and I'm super happy!
Meanwhile all the elitists are freaking out...
Yea, some people need something to fight for in everything
