- The Bernie Marsden Collection - Episode I | June 2024 Guitar Auction Consignment Update Special
This week we have a special consignment update where we focus on part of The Bernie Marsden collection. The collection consists of over 80 guitars alongside many amps, pedal and ephemera relating to Bernies extensive career. These guitars will be sold in our auction on 11th June 2024. Join Auctioneer Luke Hobbs to see these guitars, and find out about the condition and the story behind each one. With Bernie being one of the greatest rock n roll story tellers of all time, there are naturally many great tales behind each one. Many of them appear in Bernie's book, 'Tales of Tone and Volume'.
With such an extensive collection, this episode is Part I of the collection, with Part II scheduled to hit our UA-cam channel in a couple of weeks time. Make sure you hit the bell icon to be notified when this second episode goes live!

I met Bernie about 20 years ago when he travelled about 70 miles to my flat to see some vinyl albums I had advertised for sale. We hit it off immediately and he stayed about 4 hours talking about records, guitars and the music business in general. I heard lots of interesting stories including how he came by The Beast. I ended up gifting him the albums he was interested in and a few days later a big parcel turned up unannounced full of CDs, videos and all manner of stuff he had sent me. He was a smashing bloke who is sorely missed by many.
Amazing story! Just sums him up! Thanks for sharing! 🙂👍
Great story
Much missed Bernie. RIP.
Handling all this with great respect. Good to see.
Thank you 🙏
Bernie seemed like such a down to earth awesome person, I never met him but I've watched tons of videos and enjoyed listening to him talking about guitars especially his 1959 Les Paul "The beast" I hope the family holds on to that one it's extremely special and has a rich history...
Sadly, only Doctors, Lawyers and Elite people will get these guitars and they'll sit in cases and probably never make music ever again..
If I had a vintage 1959 Les Paul or any of these other gems I'd 100% be playing it a making new music with it and keeping it's heritage alive..
I Imagine a couple will end up with Bonamassa and the MLB owner guy with his museum...
Us mere mortals will just have to watch and cringe at the fact these amazing instruments will end up as wall hangers behind acrylic cases...
My condolences to the family...
Thanks for watching 🙂👍
I met Mr Marsden at the Rescue Rooms in Nottingham, he was supporting FM. He was an amazing musician, an absolute gentleman and such a lovely man. We were truly blessed. ❤️🤘
One of the greatest ❤️
I First saw Bernie Marsden Play live with Whitesnake at Wolverhampton Lafayette Club(UK) in 1978.Great band live. (Note. When David Coverdale walked on this tiny Stage... He put his Fist through the Polystyrene Ceiling).Everybody laughed and they All went on to Play a Great Set. I've also met Bernie Several times to speak with him and to See him Play at the Robin2 Club Bilston,Wolverhampton (Uk).He was a kind old Soul with No Air's or Grace's about him. A Most Affable Gentleman Right up until his Passing. R.I.P BERNIE you're sadly Missed. KINDEST REGARDS MICK HILL. Wolverhampton (UK).🙏🎸🇬🇧😊
Great story and words there. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching 🙂👍

I look forward to PT 2 of Bernie Marsden Auction.
Cheers
Lovely stuff! This is when being a lefty really starts to sting ❤
🥲 thanks for watching! 🙂👍
Fantastic 🎶👍
Just a year older than me, our lives paralleled in many ways! Perhaps the greatest guitarist who was not commonly first in mind when the topic arises but beloved by nearly everyone he came into contact with… he is sorely missed by all! Gone way too soon! RIP Bernie!
Thank you for the comment 🙂👍
Love it how you put timestamps on the videos it really helps to learn more .
Thanks!
Watching in land o' lakes,wi.....best pre-sale showing of a collection to date,,,....this is a youtube must see,.........wow.,,,,that R.galleger strat,,,,!!!!,,,,..............................A-PLUS.❤
Thanks you so much. The Gallagher Strat is glorious!
Thank you.
I'm guessing that the Hofner was a guitar that the young Bernie would have seen in a shop window or catalogue but was unobtanium at the time.
R.I.P. a gentle soul of rock n roll.
Quite possibly!
Absolutely fantastic video…..
Great content and insight into the BM collection….
Roll on part 2 …👍🎸❤️
Cheers Peter!
I played that Squier and the Destroyer as a young teenager - doubt I'll be able to afford to play them again now, but glad this is being handled with such respect. Bernie really was great and ever approachable and down to earth. Great video going through these.
Thank you so much. Appreciated. Thanks for watching 🙂👍
Looking fwd to this one.
Chur
Saw and met Bernie c. 5 years ago at a Q&A plus book signing. He played "Here I Go Again" on acoustic, such a great singing voice.
He sure did!
That Goldtop appears to be a fifties body that was renecked in 68. The 1971-72 54 reissues aka 58 reissue had a flat top.
Quite possibly! Thanks for watching 🙂👍
As always Great vid Luke ! I think I was the under bidder on his Ibanez howard Roberts ?
My sort of axe …..
Quite possibly! We have two in this sale. One from 1977 also!
Thanks for th heads up about HwRoberts,
Did you notice the reversed neck pup on the cherry 335 a la Greeny.?
Yes! It was like that when he got it. Maybe that’s what drew him to it!
If I had enough money I would bid on the red EC strat because it bring back great memories of meeting and getting to Bernie when I was working at the National Theatre
❤️
@31:50 that Gold Top is not an original 50s. Original 57s had a thinner body than 58-60. And Original 57 bodies could have as many as 5 pieces of wood. I have played 3 originals and just in the video I can tell it is a reissue maybe made in the early 80s.
Could well be. Thanks for watching 👍🙂
Rip Bernie
That 50/70s Gibson Les Paul goldtop has a decent dished/contoured top. The “58” or rather 54 goldtop 71/72 reissue had a more domed top lacking the sanded dished top from 1968 and 50s gold tops. If you look at the control cavity it should show a more accurate range mfg date. If 70s reissue the pots are mostly dated with 1377142. Caps the red/black bumblebee 2nd version. Otherwise caps should be grey tiger type.
All electrics replaced, unfortunately. Thanks for watching 🙂👍
Just misread that as the Bernie Madoff collection...
That first "Stacks" Squier is definitely NOT from 1980-81, Fender Japan wasn't in existence, (let alone Korean made Squiers) and didn't even start making Squier models until 1982. I'm not sure what you were thinking there! Maybe it's 90-91? 🙂
Yes you are correct. An error there. Had a funny 5 minutes! These videos are largely recorded live so there will always be the odd moment. I think it was because I was looking at the serial that has an E1 prefix as I was talking. I happen to know quite a bit about the Silver Series Japanese made Strats, which makes this comment a little worse!! 😂 As per the published catalogue description it is made in Korea circa 1990.
First item: there were no Korean Squiers in 1980 or 1981. The very first Squiers were Japanese and didn't appear until 1982. Would have been made in 1987 at the earliest.
Correct. As per the catalogue listing, it was made in 1988. An error on my part whilst commenting on the fly, looking at the serial that has an E1 prefix 🤦♂️ . It’s even more annoying for me as I happen to know a lot about Squier guitars 😂😅
The Squier is 100% NOT from 1981 as they were made in Japan and looked nothing like that one.
They all had body truss Rod adjustment not that 90’s style.
Correct. It will be around 89 as stated in the catalogue. Not really sure why I said 81 to be honest. Too much information to rattle off all at once maybe. Thanks for pointing this out
@@GHguitarauctionsWatching on TV, just reached for my iPad to make the same observation. Sad, sad times. Bernie was a fantastic guy.
Is there a full catalogue (physical copy)for the auction
There will be approx. 10 days before the auction. 👍
The first blue guitar the squire in this video you said it was 1982 in the previous preview video were its played it say 1988 ,which is it a 1982 or 1988 ? Cheers John
It’s the latter. 1981/2 too early for Korean Squiers. Said 81 accidentally as it has an E1 serial prefix, which would be correct for a US made Fender, but not the Squier instruments! 😅 Facts correct in the first video and as per the official catalogue listing 🙂👍
@@GHguitarauctions Thanks
RIP
Did Bernie have any Burny guitars ?
He certainly missed a trick there!
It doesn't look as though Bernie was a Telecaster fan....maybe they are in part two.
Part II 👍
What’s the estimate on that cherry, late-mid-60s block 335?
5-7k
@@GHguitarauctions thank you
Any idea what's happening to the Beast?
It’s staying put 👍
they didn't hang around, RIP x
Note: this is a postponed sale that was due to happen when our dear friend Bernie was with us. Sadly he passed 2 weeks before this scheduled auction took place. Out of respect, it was postponed for a more appropriate time. Thanks for watching 🙂👍
Is the Beast not for sale or has Joe Bonamassa snapped it up?
It’s staying out 👍 Thanks for watching 🙂👍
Re the point about Squire snobbery in the first guitar, it’s not so much why not accept Squire as good guitars it’s why accept guitars 10 times more expensive as great guitars
😮
Great point. Thanks for watching 🙂👍
Who got the Beast?
The family 🙂👍
@@GHguitarauctions The Beast is the best sounding Burst that Gibson ever made!
Best I’ve played/ heard for sure 👍
Probably Joe Bonamassa someday… I d be surprised if not
I’m friends with Jim Kirkpatrick who played with Bernie over the years he loaned Jim an early les paul and Jim played at a gig local to me and I attended and in the break I asked Jim could I have a pic with it he said yes go for it so I actually had a go with one of Bernie’s guitars .
Nice! Thanks for watching 🙂👍
First guitar he says Silver Series , aren’t they Japanese 😳😳😳 not Korean
Correct. I believe also stated in the video that this guitar date to the early 80s. It does not and as per the catalogue listing dates to around 1990, which is around the time the Japanese Silver Series came out. Possibly the reason I accident said Silver series! 😂 Thanks for the comment and watching 🙏
Why do you British say, "Three-Three-Five?" Here in the USA. we say, "Three Thirty Five!" Greetings from Hollywood California.
Hello USA! I like that and perhaps in the future I’ll mix it up for the US audience. 🙂👍
@@GHguitarauctions not just for the USA audience. The world. It was created here and I believe it was how Gibson always intended to be said. I've never heard an American say THREE THREE FIVE...we always say Three-Thirty -Five. Just the British say the correct way Football as we who know say it Football. The ignorant say Soccer,-wrong! It's Football!
Great point and point taken! 😀
Also if I may, with regard the Fender Jaguar, it’s pronounced Jag you are. Not Jag-Wire. Thank you and good day.
@@banjo7598 LOL..in England it's that way. I'm Mexican and we say it my Native American Indian correct way..."ōcēlōtl." The words comes from the Nahuatl word in Aztec for “jaguar,” ōcēlōtl.! So you are wrong! LOL!
ifc get on with it
Is a vintage finish, paint the guitar really nice and then beat the shit out of it?🎉 for what it’s worth great job Clive way to ruin a good paint job.
Thanks for the comment and watching 🙂👍
Lots of ok guitars. Like to see the “good suff”. Never even heard of him until I heard about the beast. Maybe I’m just out of touch with 80s bands.
Thanks for watching 🙂👍
Clearly some people think all rock stars must be like Joe Bonnamassa and only play the odd ok Les Paul or Strat from the late 50s.
These relic guitars are a joke. It's like putting a GTI logo on a normal Golf. Or a Ferrari Logo on your red Nissan. Look at Dann Huffs Strat. Played for decades. It has "earned" it's used look.
Love hearing folks feedback on the relic thing. Always so divisive. Thanks for watching 🙂👍
Totally this! More money than sense he you law's out silly money on relic. A true vintage guitar has been on a real journey and tells a true story with the scars to match.
Un autre psychopath ...
