I played a game of ASL with a couple of podcasters a few years ago, and one of them had received a poster-sized print of a box cover from an ASL module (I'm going to say ASL as much as possible so you change your mind about it). Anywho, you guys might be able to figure out how to get prints of GMT box art and maybe even convince GMT to sell them. N. Africa '41 would be a great print hanging in my basement. Not sure about the licensing, because these covers are by Antonis Karadis (he has a website and is an independent professional artist. It’s much easier to ask GMT to see if they have Roger McGowan covers
I was going to ask about the relationship to The Legend Begins, and then you covered it. Great game! His other folio game Decision in France was the first operational game I found after Tactics 2 in high school.
I'm really a Eurogamer (with a small table) who likes history, conflict and interaction, so dabbles in wargames. Played with the idea of collecting all/many of the games on the North African theatre for a while. Took one look at this on the table and decided just Undaunted and Rommel in the Desert is fine for me
Another great review guys! It seems such an interesting system and the mechanics for supply are so intriguing! I hope to find an opponent willing to explore the game with me, it would be a shame to get it only to have it sitting in my shelf waiting for the occasional 2handed solo.
I am a fan of 19xx and Simonitch designs. I do have one critique though. My one gripe is most of these games that Ive played ( Holland/ Salerno/ Africa/ Normandy) really come down to battling at a bottleneck point. Here in Africa that is Tobruk. I get a little tired and frustrated when Ive attacked the same hex 4 or 5 times with little effect, or my efforts are repaired etc. It seems like most of the 19xx games have this in them, where the game comes to a crawl trying to break-through a single hex or 2 and the game revolves around whether that is successful or not. I know I said it in your last video, but I want to find more games where the attack/ counter-attack is more free flowing like in AVL. I also liked the system used in Downfall as each side had defense responsibilities as well as attacking across an entire front. Again, I still really like these 19xx games, but that is one my complaint.
So this or the OCS game, DAK2? Or even one of the the SCS options, like North Africa: Afrika Korps vs Desert Rats, 1940-42? Or even GMT's The Battle for North Africa: War in the Desert, 1940-42?
"ZOC Bond" is a central mechanic in Simonitch's '4X-games. Basically means that friendly units' zones of control (ZOC) connect together and form impassable barriers.
AHH!! "ZOC Bond" and not "zach ban." I was so unsure what he was referring to, I had to turn on the subtitles and that's how it came up. LOL Sometimes I have to laugh at myself! "ZOC" makes sense. However, the "Bond" part of it would have eluded me - thanks for the explanation!
@@ThePlayersAid Yes, maybe 'hate' is too strong a word. But I find that they seldom fit together nicely (as you mention in your review), the extra cost makes overseas shipping impossibly expensive, and finally, you can hardly ever fit them in the box. I'm also fine with optional mounted maps, but would always prefer paper + plexi PS. one of the things I like doing is picking out the games on your shelves behind you and seeing how many of them I also own 🙂

Mounted maps fit perfectly in the box with a Cube4Me counter tray.
I have the mounted map and it fits into the box. I also put plexiglass over it but there is a bit of discrepancy between the two maps.

Honestly though, if you only did this one solo it'd still be worth it, in my opinion. It's such a great exercise to play through.
