The first-person shooter game _SUPERHOT_ is a good illustration of just how ludicrously overpowered even a limited ability to slow time would be. The premise of the game is that, to quote the introductory dialogue, "time moves only when you do"--when you stand still, so does time, and as you move, time speeds up. With the aid of that ability, you can pull off ridiculous stunts like slicing bullets out of the air with a sword, or shooting a burst from a machine gun with every bullet scoring a headshot on a different enemy.

Technically, time is extremely slowed down in Superhot (well, the original game) when you stand still, as the main character is still breathing, thus counting as some form of movement.

That's the thing people don't get about time powers or super speed, you're basically untouchable as long as you aren't caught off guard. You can be incredibly stealthy if you can stop time and you can win almost every fight because you'll be able to attack multiple times before the opponent even gets the chance to defend and you won't need strength because you'll be able to use force multipliers.

I’m a novelist, one of my main characters has time powers, here’s how it works:
The basic premise of the book is that everyone in our real world wakes one day with a random ability w/ a limitation. They have instinctual/preconscious knowledge of how it works, but they’re not immediately cognizant off the minutiae. It’s meant to be that the powers don’t get stronger, just that you interpret the somewhat ambiguous guidelines in more creative ways over time.
The ability in question is called hourglass, which allows you to dilate time. You have one hour of “fuel” and the hourglass empties at a rate equivalent to the dilation. The hourglass refills while not using the power, so if you made time run at 1/2 speed, you could keep it up for half an hour, or fifteen minutes from our perspective. Same with 2x speed, half hour for us, 15 minutes for the user. After which the hourglass is empty, and you’d have to wait an hour to get a full tank back.
Eventually the character realizes that messing with time should have much more adverse effects on him than it does, and comes to the revelation that his powers have been shielding him from the adverse effects, and that he can turn the safeguards off by degrees. When he first tries it while slowing down time, the air around him gets super cold and the air pressure drops. However, when he turns his powers off, he realizes that he was giving off heat like an oven. Because all the molecules were slowed down, it mimicked a loss of energy and temperature, meanwhile his own molecules experienced two seconds of movement every second, resulting in a large increase in the energy level of his own molecules, or that’s how it appears anyway. Lifting more safeguards would do things like multiply the force of gravity, cause deafness and blindness because our eyes and ears wouldn’t be able to pick up sound/light waves that slow.

Time control (aka chronomancy): Never having to engage unless having to prevent something from happening to someone else, if you're aware of what is happening (though it is also great for getting multiple angles and better insight into a situation before deciding). If you do need to engage to prevent something happening to someone else then you have all the "time" you need to get it right.

Pyromancy (control of fire) and Necromancy (which is both control of the undead and the use of remains for divination). There is also the underlying assumption in fictional magic systems that generally if you can perceive it (divine means "to see" as well as being a reference to godlike beings), you can control it, if you're strong enough in mind.

The problem is that this would come at the price of shortening your life relative to everyone else's. Although you could probably offset this by speeding time up while, for example, waiting for a bus or during some sort of a long transit situation... I'm not sure you could do that, though, because if conservation of momentum plays a role, you probably couldn't do this while on a bus. You'd just become stuck in place and the bus would break apart around you. But then again so will the planet. You'd just fly away into space probably. Yeah... speeding time up is dangerous, guys.

I want to help build some of the physics up. Kinetic energy only makes sense within a given reference frame. • @nthmaster3077
      @nthmaster3077 3 роки тому +9

@@filthypete13 I believe they would blueshift, as the time bubble is essentially a sphere with less gravity on the inside. That is if we assume that the laws of relativity for space and time stay the same.

    • @oberynmartell3527
      @oberynmartell3527 3 роки тому +11

@@filthypete13 A few fun points there.
With 'conventional' super speed, the inertial frame of reference is the stationary frame of the ground you and your opponent are standing on. You would be acceleraing in this reference frame, and your opponent could likely be modelled as a stationary target. For stuff like 'double your speed' (or even x10 or x100), the classical definition of kinetic energy is fine.
The time bubbles are a bit of fun to consider: They don't violate a conservation rule, and I think they are permitted under general relativity. The issue is they would require a local negative energy density, which GR permits but we never see in reality. If you were able to really conjure a time bubble, the light coming from it would blueshift to observers. Inside it, you would see the world redshifted.

That first skit reminded me of the Ekko trailer for League a few years ago.
He was attacked, his response is to rev up his zero drive (time-science-magic-thingy) and basically give himself a redo button. He then gets destroyed, goes back, evades the first attack. He gets hit on the second attack and he goes back again. You keep seeing him going back and back, BUT retaining his injuries (cool touch if you ask me). After he beats the attacker, a mural is destroyed. This makes him decide to go back one more time and fight again just to save that mural. It's one of the best character trailers IMO. A lot of insight and making for a seriously powerful person!

There is a big consideration that it often overlooked for time control. If a person can slow or stop time around them (the "external clock") but they are not also slowed/stopped i.e. they are not being affected by the time control, then we can assume their internal body clock is still going. If they slow down and/or stop time too often, relative to the external clock, they would seem to age considerably quicker. They might age 50 years when 30 years have only passed externally for example, and they would need to periodically speed up time in order to "catch up/sync" to the external clock.

This could become a mini series, talking about how impactful some powers can be in a fight or day to day.
Something that comes to my mind is the power to teleport or create portals. I don't see it often used offensively (i can only think of Dr Strange and that guy from Mob psycho sez 2) but it has a lot of offensive potential, depending on it's workings. You could just keep throwing cuts out of measure, for example, and create a portal in front of your sword and the other end to the enemy's back and/or to the side or just directly in their face to take them by surprise. And on that note, you could make a portal to intercept an attack from the enemy and open the other end behind them, making them hit themselves.
It could work even better with guns, create multiple portals, if the power allows it, and shoot at them, making it harder for the enemy to react.
Something else i thought about is create 2 portals somewhere, one above the other, and let something heavy and compact fall. It will gain a lot of velocity, depending on how long you let it be, since it will fall endlessly and later, in a fight, you can suddenly open a portal facing your enemy and connect it to the portal where the object falls. You will shoot a bullet of whatever size the object is and not a lot of people would expect that. Or something easier on this note: do the same think but with the enemy. Let them get some serious speed and just close the portals and let the enemy fall to death.
And there is the obvious utility, won't need to spend a dime on public transit or gas and you will never be late anywhere due to traffic. It could open up so many possibilities for the future, want to practice hema for example but there is no club nearby? Not a problem anymore.
Personally, if i were to choose any power to have in my life, i'd choose fire powers since i just like fire. But if i were to actually consider utility and not just my biased for fire then it will be opening portals. The amount of stuff you can do, both in a hypothetical fight and actual real life, is just too good imo, to the point of being broken.
Of course all of this heavily relies on the details of the power. An obvious strong nerf would be giving a significant casting time for the portals or limiting the range where you can open them and the number.
To whoever made it this far, i am surprised you had the patience to get through this ramble.

Phir Se from the webserial Worm has portals that send things back in time a bit (a few hours at most, I believe) as well as moving them through space. He does the "endless fall" trick with a few photons, except they come back before they left. After a couple of days he has a VERY big, single-shot flashlight.
Another minor character in a totally unimportant scene abuses a portal maker for both an impenetrable shield and to cheat range limitations for her own broken power. Oh, and for the perfect vantage point, much like a certain lucky Ta'veren from Wheel of Time.
(Bonus, WoT features a highly unconventional portal use that I didn't see in your list, but I won't spoil that one. Also, on the time topic, bigass magical lasers that hit so hard they retcon the target a bit. And Sanderson wrote the final book!)

If they use magic, your response is mostly invalid, since magic and other abilities that use that have specialized conditions that usually warp reality or protect the user in some special way(like the speed force ). If light can travel normally and collide with atoms then maybe it is possible. It is a phenomenon we can not test.
Time manipulation can mean different things, perception manipulation which will stop human or living creature perception or slow it down can give identical result. Mega ultra speed and perception would also result the same as literally slow everything down. Speed and time are in the same equation for a reason.
A literally time stop is very unlikely for a super power because if you isolate a sphere of space and time within the universe then the entire universe will be affected by it and the universe will affect the “time stop” area, it will require way more force to maintain even a small area of real time manipulation.
In a super power theme setting depend on the setting time power maybe overpowered or maybe not. Real time magic would bring severe consequences to the casters unless they can withstand the physical phenomenon created by the magic. In some stories the people who use that kind of power get severe backlash.

There is some difference between speed causing time-manipulation or just having time-manipulation:
If you only have the later than running long distances will require you to make frequent stops to drink, eat and sleep - even if you were a superb runner, running just coast-to-coast of the US (roughly 4 000 km) would take you over 200 hours of running (that is marathon-professional pace), so while someone like the flash can do that in a split second, a "normal" human would easily age >20 days.
But in a fight you don't need that. Just slow time as much as you can, destroy your enemy in seconds, done.

Depends on what the time slowing factor is. Humans can survive speeds in air of more than 800 km/h without equipement and more than the speed of sound with equipement. Compared to the fastest human motions (throwing balls) at 170 km/h this is a speed increase by a factor of almost 5 without equipement and more with it. Those factors are already quite large. Assuming you are only running you still could go up to those speeds and multiply the maximum running speed by a factor of 20.
The real question is what happens with a time stop.

That way, the caster would be able to breathe and move normally, in reality, while slowing down everything else.

If you stop time completely around yourself, the force carriers of the four fundamental interactions between particles would also stop, making it possible to move between them without interaction (one would just have to find an explanation with the typical science-buzzwords why your body isn't affected). There are problems in this case:
-You can't sense the world around your bubble since there are no interactions between the rest of the universe and your bubble.
-You would have to return to the same spot you started from to avoid getting air in your blood stream because you moved into air molecules.
-You would have to deal with all the energy you converted in this time and bring all the air, food and water you need into your "bubble". If you would for example keep yourself in a bubble for one day you would convert roughly 20kg of air and 1kg food each into 2 kg of CO2 and 19 kg of air with less oxygen, but you would also produce roughly 8.64 MJ of energy. For anyone outside your bubble this conversion would happen instantly and therefore have an explosive effect.
-If you move into significantly dense material by some means you would also explode instantly because the fundamental forces see you now and you see them => energetic reactions.

There are a few things everyone forgets for some reason when talking about super speed, that would create some interesting consequences.
To run we humans apply force down on the ground through our legs, so the ground pushes us UP cause of Newton's third law, but the gravity constantly pushes us DOWN, that's why we don't fly into space when we take a step, and then we just "swing" on our legs with the help of friction. When talking about super speed, to propel yourself at such extreme velocities you'd have to apply A LOT of force, to push UP of the ground, which means at a certaing point, your Running will turn into Jumping, as extreme forces you push off with fight gravity. Launching yourself many meters above ground would greatly affect precision of your movement as you'd be overshooting your mark or smashing into terrain or even birds, being unable to control your movement while in the air. And if we talking relativistic speeds, gravity doesn't even matter, you'd just yeet yourself into cosmos the second you move.
Another problem arises from the same Newton's law. When you stomp the ground with billions of newtons of force, it won't take it easily. Every step of yours would create an explosion under your feet, every time you tried to slow down, you'd dig a tunnel through the ground (or more likely start tumbling uncontrollably, as your inertia would just tip you over). And if you crush into something - ... Here is a simulation video of a 5.56 round hitting a block of solid steel at 10 km/s ua-cam.com/video/7v5L-JSVpM8/v-deo.html . It weighs 4 grams. Average human weighs 15000 times that.
Also you'd create devastating shockwaves of air. So far rather than superhero you'd be either an astronaut or a terrorist.
About time powers: i think super speed and slowing down time are effectivly the same thing from physics point of view, as Velocity = distance/time. If your hypothetical measure of time is 10 times shorter then normal, your velocity just increased 10 times, which is literally the same effect as the super speed.
Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong, i am no expert or scientist, just laying out my thoughts.

For reasonable speeds you could apply many solutions already used today like spoilers, airbreaks, parachutes and so on. But as soon as you can apply these forces on the ground or the air the forces also apply to you and would destroy any human.
At ridiculous speeds you would have to find ways to not wreck the environment and not take of. One way would be to speed up initially and then apply force tangentially to get around curves. Using a technique which doesn't use the frition generated by the gravitational force to move would also be useful. At these high speeds you basically become a hybrid between a hypersonic plane and someone in microgravity. You would probably either use the air as medium to apply force or climb like an astronaut.

We can't really look at super speed and slowing time the same way, though, as the distance/time _isn't_ the same. In the object's local reference frame - IE, your accelerated time - it's moving at the same distance/time as without a super power, so it would have the same momentum and kinetic energy. This is fundamentally different than superspeed, which operates without a special reference frame.
Also importantly, you would need to generate all the force with superspeed to accelerate an object to that speed, including your own body, as you noted. With With freezing time, your body or anything you carry is moving no faster than it usually does without the power.

With real physics you are not saving anyone at super-speed, you are tearing them apart as you try to get them out of the way of the oncoming truck.
But with "speed force" you move super fast and yadda yadda yadda time moves different something something pocket dimension ehmm quantum mechanics? ... and now you can be a speedster.

-Extremely high metabolic rate (hook them up to constant food and water supply and a oxygen tank so they have some stamina, and maybe include some kind waste catching device).
-High heat rejection (basically able to sweat steam).
      -High durability of body parts.
      -Extremely fast reflexes.
      -Very fast thinking and decision-making.
      -Good training and dexterity.
Depending on how far you take it you could probably construct a speedster capable of 5-10 times regular speed without breaking physics at all. These speeds would be enough to dodge bullets and race cars and trains. Much higher speeds also never really were properly portrayed as most people lack the knowledge/everyday experience of what would happen at hypersonic, interstellar and relativistic speeds.

In the Silver Age, some of the problems were hand-waved with an "aura" that the Flash had to protect him, but I think that by the '80s the writers realized that they needed a more comprehensive "get out of known physics" card and came up with the Speed Force.

This character also has the ability from the start to open a doorway to any location. At first it works like a fated teleportation that takes you where you most need to go. However, the portal can theoretically connect to anywhere within the universe, and others. There can be any number of portals, and they can be any size or shape. In other words, not only could this teleportation ability be used to time travel, it could also be used to rewind time.
Of course, this character comes from a race of beings with abilities based on manipulating the fundamental forces of the universe. Within the context of reality manipulation, these powers seem pretty bog standard.

Reverse flash admits to “I went back in time and replicated his transformation, and it worked!” When explaining to Barry how he came to hate him so much. So I’m a way you’re exactly correct, the correlation between speed and time are nearly direct as speed is acceleration and direction of matter at its most basic fundamental form.

Finally got a chance to watch this. Work has decided that my enjoyment of life isn't on the menu so I've been really busy. I really liked how you showcased concepts in editing, really helps visualize what you're up against. It reminded me of the Nightcrawler scene in X-Men 2 where he attacks the president. Seeing those ideas made into a visual reality totally blew my mind on how to think about teleportation.

I've been writing an urban fantasy novel for a few years and one of my characters has the abilities of Bullet Time (think the game Super Hot), slowed aging and increased healing (the last two are hereditary).
He got so good in combat that he was given the name "the untouchable man," for obvious reasons.
When he meditates or sleeps, he needs a pocket watch to recalibrate himself with the "true time."
He's insanely overpowered, even with his weapon, which is a Tachi with a disarming hook on the back and quillions on the tsuba.

The one who killed him could short distance teleport... and was related to the one with bullet time; its a long story.

The ability to do twice as much or more in one turn is sooooo useful and underrated. Anyone who's ever played Undertale knows how OP time manipulation is. You basically play as a character (Frisk) who has the ability to reset the timeline even after death, so effectively you can never die to anything but old age. The true antagonist (cannon name of Chara) also has this same ability, making Chara the most dangerous opponent in video games as well.

Considering this gives the fight against sans almost a tragic tone - no matter what epic skills sans would put up, since he kind of got a hint of frisk and the alterations of the timeline (i think he mentions something bout that at the starting speech or in the beginning of the fight) are connected he guesses to be screwed

    • @HotDogTimeMachine385

Undertale is a callout to games in general when you think about it. Frisk and Chara point out that the PLAYER in most games can close and restart if something doesn't go your way. Boss hits you for lots of damage? Close game, restart, prepare for the attack. Most games essentially let you use "time powers" if you really want to.

    • @Seriously_Unserious
      @Seriously_Unserious 3 роки тому

@@HotDogTimeMachine385 Undertale just makes it cannon to the game and breaks the 4th wall hard. Basically the whole game is a 4th wall break.
Also, before the player shows up in the timeline, your main foil throughout the game, Flowey, had that ability to control the timeline.
It's also interesting that you, as the player, control whether it's Frisk or Chara, who in the end uses the time reset powers, for good or for evil.

The only way to basically nurf such a powerful power is to have it cause massive strain to use. Where the person could reach the point of dying if they tried to stop time or something. vector manipulation is probably up there with time manipulation in cool powers that can easily just invalidate everything. Always a toss up when the whole what super power would you want if you could have it, though vector manipulation tends to win out on the "drawback" games where something like time manipulation is usually easier to find some kind of drawback to.

Hey Skallagrim. First off, thanks for posting videos like this. Yes, I am a writer. I write creative fiction in my spare time, purely as a hobby.
This video, along with the DBZ fights/pragmatism video, has helped me with my writing.
My story involves a guy who has powers that include super speed, but his powers are more along the lines of Superman's speed than that of the Flash.
I guess my guy's speed is a mixture of the purely physical and Speedforce-assisted variety. He has incredible running/movement speed and matching reflexes/perception, but he himself is never harmed by the act of moving fast. He can top hypersonic speeds, but only in short bursts. His perception of time is where it seems to him that everything else is in slow-motion, but it really isn't. He is just fast.
My character has to tie his hair back and wear his clothing in such a way as to prevent it from becoming too much air resistance, and also to stop his clothing and gear from being ripped off and destroyed by that much friction from air molecules. I try to make my story as realistic as possible.
He can, in fact, generate greater kinetic energy from his speed, so it doesn't fall into the category of time manipulation. He can't alter time, only his own movement.
Another problem that you didn't mention is that with time-manipulating super speed, increasing the speed of time flow for yourself would also make you age faster. Think about what happens to Johnny Quick in the movie Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths.
