Excellent explanation. Excellent advice. This is a well "put together" presentation. I cannot over stress the need for steel toe shoes. They are cheap but worth millions. Eye protection is equally cheap and also well worth it. Even professionals have accidents and injuries. Don't take short cuts. Splitting wood is a lot more dangerous that it would appear. You can die from complications from a broken femur or shin bone. A wood splitting ax or maul can glance off and hit an artery.

Nigel is correct. I don't laugh at safety. I am all for it. Cutting/splitting fire wood for over 20 years. Chain saw accidents happen very quickly. And can b life threating. I have not had 1 accident dropping trees, bucking them, or splitting wood. Yes I have come close, but wearing the proper equipment made the difference. Keep on keeping on John, U set a good example.

Having had a few wet days this week, inspired by your video, I made one of these babies. It certainly reduces the amount of bending one has to do. Your idea of drilling holes to drain the water is something I hadn't seen before. Thanks for sharing.

You probably dont care but if you guys are stoned like me atm then you can stream pretty much all of the latest movies on instaflixxer. I've been binge watching with my brother for the last couple of months :)

I finally made a splitting log with a tire mounted exactly like yours. Good info, and it works great. Thanks!

I use the same method, only slightly different. I use 2 bolts on one side, so I can lift the tire from the other side and easily remove the bark coming of the logs.

Greetings from the Emerald Isle of Ireland 🇮🇪🇮🇪 I use 3 truck tyres with the inner walls removed stack them on top of each other and fill them up with rounds, split away, until the top one is split, remove and work your way down, brilliant for saving your back,🇮🇪🇮🇪

Great tips, thank you for sharing. Also, safety is an issue that’s better taken seriously because we don’t know how extensive the consequences will be when we disregard them.

I like the holes in the tire so the water drains out. Good idea.

Thanks. When I was planning the project I imagined striking a log and having muddy water and mosquito larvae flying up into my face. It didn't seem like a pleasant option.

nice video. Thanks very much. I use 6x6s but I might try this as a permanent set up near my wood pile. Thanks for emphasizing safety.

thanks for the video...gave me some new ideas about the tire method which I already use. one thing I would suggest is that you need to completely and tightly stuff the tire with wood. that way all the wood stands up straight even after splitting. you can just circle the tire as you split and have a lot of wood done rather than one log at a time.

    • @vaquero3578
      @vaquero3578 8 років тому

***** it is much quicker and its really safer as well since the logs wont accidentally bounce out in my experience, they hold each other in. thansk again for taking the time to post your video.

Tip: nail in 3 or 4 rectangular shaped 2x4 pieces along the perimeter of your splitting stump. Then anchor the tire into these pieces, being sure they're far enough to the edge of the stump that you won't hit em and break em to pieces with your splitting tool over time. This will both help hold chunks of wood inside the tire when splitting NO ESCAPEES!! (so you don't have to bend over and pick them up after you split them) and also allows you to brush dirt and wood debris off your splitting stump with a small sweep or a gloved hand. Don't have to tip that heavy splitting stump upside down to get it cleaned out!

That's basically what I did. I also lay mine down on it's side so that the tire tread is on the ground when I am not using it. I drilled a large hole (like 2 inches) in the tread to drain water and I always make sure that hole is down when it's on its side. Then I chock the log up off the ground with a couple of wedges of firewood. That way I avoid most of the problems he was having that made it necessary to replace the log.

What kind of wood stove are you using? I don't recall seeing a video on it. Seems like you generally split your wood down fairly small. Thanks for the videos.

I've been using a similar set-up recently but have noticed I'm taking out some big dings from the edge of my maul. Realized that of course the edge of the tyre contains steel beads and that's what has been causing the damage. Did you remove the beads? Thanks!

Yea, I don't weedwack with safety glasses or goggles but I have prescription glasses that help a bit. Sometimes I get a random bit of grass to land on them. I haven't had any major problems. Hopefully I never will.

Shave the head and join the rest of us bald dudes!! Just don't get sunburnt!! And mad props for safety glasses. You won't catch my bald head without them resting on it and ready to go. (Nearly had eye ripped out but glasses saved it. Cheek was glued shut and stitches on eyesocket fixed me up!)
