Hi Jerome! I loved your review and found it profoundly enduring. Especially when you spoke about how you and your Mum watched Signs. Also, how God allows good things and especially bad things to happen to people, your explanation was excellent. Lol I can relate to the whole trying to sleep facing the wall, only to sometimes check over my shoulder for anything unusual and possibly eerie. Great review thanks! I really like the film

This movie is like being in a dream...anything can happen in dreams. That's its genius.

I think you’ve done an excellent job covering this film. I loved your thoughts about the messaging in regards to faith and those little moments of Divine Intervention that people call coincidence.
Something else I noticed was that Morgan says “I hate you” to his father in a moment of terror and stress, and doesn’t mean it. Then later Graham says “I hate you” to God in a moment of terror and stress, and ultimately doesn’t mean it. I just thought that was an interesting parallel.

I absolutely adore this movie. It's my favorite M. Night movie. I love that the "alien invasion" aspect isn't the primary focus. It's just the backdrop for a great story about a family in crisis, and the story of a crisis of faith.
Thank you for a great review of an excellent movie. I love Shyamalan's direction in this movie and Gibson and Phoenix give really good performances. My favorite thing about this movie is that it's not really about aliens, it's really about a family and their struggle with faith after a terrible tragedy. The final scene with Gibson wearing his clergy shirt again, getting ready to go to church, is an uplifting and inspiring ending to the film.
“Swing away Merrill,” is the line I always repeat. I love this movie. I always end up re-reading The Problem of Pain, or Discovering Joy by CS Lewis after watching it. When I got my kindle tablet, it was one of the first movies I purchased and downloaded-ridiculous because it’s a very difficult film to watch. I’m a very religious person and Graham’s grief over the loss of his wife feels very realistic to me, especially in that scene at the table. I always end up bawling at the ending. Yeah, no such thing as coincidence so none of those things bother me in the events of the movie. I don’t recall the religious themes of “Signs” being the least bit controversial at the time of its release (but things are certainly very different now). Your assessment of the power of suggestion is something that hadn’t even occurred to me. And remember that H. G. Wells’s aliens are brought down by bacteria.
But I also love “The Village” too, so I guess I can forgive a lot from Shyamalan. Roger Ebert gave this four stars but only gave “Sixth Sense” three.
Now that I’m twenty years older I see very much how this is a film about a family under stress having more stress piled on. Back then I felt like it was his darker version of “The Day the Earth Stood Still” or an answer to the cuddly E.T. maybe.
So does my mom! I just read this comment to her and she chuckled. :) I wish I'd included that clip (along with a couple others, like "it's contaminated" and "Morgan took a sip and it has his amoebas in it"), but I made myself rein it in, ha.
I don't remember the film making me feel emotional the first time or two I saw it--I was probably too scared!--but I have noticed that, as I've gotten older, I've found multiple scenes increasingly more moving.
Overall, we liked The Village too. The reveal was a huge anticlimax, but there was enough we did enjoy about it in terms of atmosphere, imagery, and lead characters (including Joaquin Phoenix again) to make us revisit it from time to time.

I will try to keep this brief. This is an excellent review of one of my favorite films of all time. Second only to Jaws, for me. This film made an enormous impact on my life for when it was released I was in the depths of a depression from a divorce that I did not want. I felt like God had abandoned and betrayed me and my trust. My faith was shattered and I was broken. Then I went to see Signs as a fan of Shymalan and his other films. I went for a break in the mundane existence that I was living and I was shone the divine providence of a caring Creator. My life and course was altered after the first viewing and Remained thoroughly enlightened ever since. I am grateful for the film and it’s message of faith. Thanks again for the review! Great job!
I'm also a big fan of this movie despite it's imperfections, often it has a classic old style monster movie feel to it, along with the Hitchcockian sense of less being more, especially when building tension - you don't need to see the monsters to be afraid of them. I also am a fan of "The Village", a film I know a lot of people love to hate, but there's an atmosphere and quirkiness to that film, as well as this one, which just strikes a chord in me. Great review as always, while you think it may've been long winded, we thing that's a treat!
I've known for some time that Shyamalan was inspired by Hitchcock, but I don't think I noticed until this more analytical viewing how much he endeavored to emulate his style here--and with great success, in my opinion. It's been a while since the last time I saw The Village, so I think I'll be revisiting it sometime soonish. Yes, the atmosphere and quirkiness make the two films good companions, especially for those of us who like that kind of thing. :) Thank you!

I have always thought that it is very significant that at the end of the film the cross has been removed from the bedroom wall, but the wall has faded over time and the cross's outline can still be seen. Great review. Take care...
Thank you for sharing this video! This is probably my favorite Shyamalan movie as well. Either this or Unbreakable, depends on my mood. Oddly my love of it stems mostly from it's connection to faith, not religion but faith. A fellow Christian myself, the message of this film really lifts me up. It's a little odd saying that but it's true. Another highlight for me is those "quirky" characters. I live in the Southern US, so a lot of those folks are real to me.
Your detailed description of the movie, particularly the credits and importance of its music was very enlightening. But your highlighting of how powerful this film can be is what I really find meaningful. You have given this movie a great "defense" and I really appreciate it. Signs is currently free to watch on UA-cam, I know what I'm watching next!
I totally agree about finding it an uplifting film. I'm sure classifying it as "inspirational" would be nobody's first choice, but I feel the same way. And yes, faith as opposed to religion. Very different things. :)

I'm a huge fan of this film. It's very creepy, spooky, suspenseful and extremely eerie. It's one of the best films for making you feel like you're being watched. I'll admit now, the water twist at the end does kinda hurt the film, the film before that is an excellent ride.
I am subscribed to many UA-cam channels that review horror and sci-fi films. Some of which you have named dropped on your own channel. But I really enjoy your channel for the types of films you review and your unique points of views about said films. I appreciate all the research you do and everything is presented in a very nice package. I appreciate your love for classic Cinema and it because of this that I must recommend a film to you. The last few weeks, as I've been watching your videos, I have been thinking about the film fade to Black from 1980. It's somewhat of a cult classic in horror circles. And the film itself is not very terrifying, it's more about the intriguing storyline. In a nutshell, it is a about a man who has an unhealthy obsession for cinema. He has no friends, is picked on at work, and lives with his overbearing and abusive aunt. The film is about the man's psyche and how he eventually breaks and not only goes through an identity crisis, but a film inspired killing spree. It's a very unique film with a great cast. It's the first DVD I ever owned. Along with this film, is another film I would love to see you review. Not only would I love to see you do fade to black, but another film, another one of the very first DVDs I ever owned, a wonderful murder mystery set up more in the vein of a stage play called 'deathtrap'. It stars the late great Christopher Reeve and Michael caine. It's got a great twist and fantastic dialogue. The movie keeps you fully engaged from start to finish, no matter how many times you've seen it. Anyway, this is a dream double feature that I would love to see you review. Fade to Black and deathtrap. I really feel if you have not already seen either one of these, that you will enjoy them both very much. I loved this video by the way. Signs has always been one of my favorite m night shyamalan films. Wow definitely flawed, he is one of the most interesting filmmakers out there.

You couldn't be more right! This film is practically eschatological, as it pulls an entire history (that of the Hess family) into focus, filling the bizarre, seemingly happenstance experiences of its members with purpose and meaning.

That was a very heartfelt movie review. You articulated quite excellently and successfully and in very comprehensive way about the nuances and major plot points that compose SIGNS (2002). For me, it has the resonances of a good science fiction short story and the Wellsian touch at the end similar to the ending of the novel WAR OF THE WORLDS combined with the Kubrickian flash forward to suggest Faith Restored made for a satisfying conclusion in my book. Hope to see you on PBS one day as you make for an engaging and entertaining movie reviewer!
I love this movie too. The music and mood come together to create an incredible atmosphere. One can ignore the somewhat questionable decision of the aliens to choose planet earth.
By the way, by watching your videos, I noticed how much I care about atmosphere and how little about emotions. That is gradually changing through your videos. You really do have the best channel on UA-cam!

Love, love, love this movie. Remember jumping out of my seat in the cinema when they saw the alien on TV. Always love how the baby monitor works only when they are all connected as a family. Joaquin and Gibson have such incredible chemistry, and it’s just magical because you really feel how much they love each other as brothers and how much they love the kids. The final supper scene always, always makes me cry. Incredible movie.
I'll never forget the alien-on-video scene. Everyone in the theater jumped.
My headcanon for the water twist is that it's not the water itself, but the fluoride that we mix into it.
Watched this movie at the Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood when it came out. Before the IMAX conversion when the original pitch of the floor made the room feel more focused. I’ve never forgotten the opening title sequence pulsing, flashing against the ornate ceiling as the eerie score sneaked out the walls and jumped at us. For me the film rises above a mere classic because it acknowledges the persistent sense that we all have of something transcendent and the suffering that can cloud it. The tale is timeless.

Hello. Recent subscriber. Having a ball digging into your videos. I vividly remember seeing this in the theater and how the audience seemed to react as one in the build up and reaction to the video footage scene. It was quite remarkable.
When I think of Shyamalan, I mostly think of his filmography as having two trilogies that have an overarching narrative, The Sixth Sense through The Happening, and then his other work that branches off into other areas.
I think his first trilogy of The Sixth Sense through Signs is especially strong, and deliver personal stories that truly resonate. With The Village through The Happening, I feel as though they're more focused on his meta narrative as opposed to the personal element, which is why they don't seem to impact the audience like his first trilogy does. Regardless, I find these six films especially fascinating.
Yeah I vividly remember that also! A bunch of people in the theater kind of gasped out loud!
First, the movie Signs is not about an alien invasion. It is the story of faith, lost and regained. Second, those that think an alien species that can't tolerate water would invade a planet consisting of 70 percent water should remember that man is currently attempting to colonize worlds that are covered with 100 percent vacuum.
I love the core message of this film. And a movie like this is so exceedingly rare now. Free Will has to exist, but with it comes the question of why bad things must happen to good people. And why innocent creatures must suffer. But the universal truth will one day be revealed and and we shall fully understand that all things work out for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.

Some of the best sci-fi movies are those that tell the story from the view of a family i.e. Close Encounters of The Third Kind, Invaders From Mars (1953 version), The Day The Earth Stood Still etc.
The 'menace in a cornfield' trope puts me in mind of one of my favourite creepy Japanese movies, Onibaba, though it's the hissing of tall grass waving in the wind that gives that movie an added eerie dimension to an already creepy story.
Glad to see another true hardcore fan of this movie. I absolutely love Signs. It was a near Perfect movie in my opinion.
What a coincidence, my dad and I went out to lunch with a couple from the choir and orchestra after church and they were talking about this exact same movie.

I’m so glad to find a reviewer that sees the whole point of this movie. It’s about faith; one man’s abandonment of that faith and his journey back to it. And just like what we read in the Bible, God does all the heavy lifting.
The aliens are interesting and spooky, but they are ultimately just a device to get Graham back to his faith. Just think: Merrill had asthma just for this reason. At least that what I believe.
By the way, the tin foil hat would have been hilarious but it’s best not to be wasteful I suppose. Great, great review!

Love this review. I'm terrified of Aliens but this movie is still top 3 favs for me. I rewatch it constantly, even to just relax.
Good lawd, you GET this wonderful movie. Your description of the message of Faith in this film is perfect. The scene where Mel meets his movie wife at the tree is one of the best moments in movie history. And when everything comes together makes me cheer. This is M. Knight's best flick by seven miles. Have you reviewed Unbreakable, which for many years was the best superhero movie not named Superman from 1978.
The one thing that really stuck out for me was that, while most aliens are depicted as about 4 ft tall, this one was around 6 ft. I guess it just would not have looked too cool if the younger brother had beaten up on a little 4 ft. alien.
When I was 8 or 9, I saw E.T. for the first time, and that gave me nightmares from how grotesque and eerie it was for a supposed family film. This is around the 2002 re-release when we rented it. About a year later, our B-team basketball coach invited us to watch Signs, which was then released on video. I recall it being thoroughly freaky (especially having lived by cornfields), but it didn't haunt my dreams like E.T. did for some reason. I haven't seen it in over 2 decades, but I've seen countless reactions and spoiler explanations for it since then. Part of me is too scared to see the pantry scene. But nothing compares to the jumpscare of E.T. popping out of the brush and screaming, among other moments.
Great explanation of Divine Providence and wondering why God let's bad things happen. You're 100% correct that we don't know, and may never know, but that's okay. Just trust God's plan
I really enjoyed Signs and picked up on the underlying allegory (which I appreciated). The movie has its quarks, but it's still enjoyable. The thing that always got me was the fact that highly advanced aliens from thousands of lightyears away needed crop circles to communicate and navigate - really? An advanced species who can figure out how to travel across the stars, but can't navigate a planet? O.k. The water thing got me too, but hey, I still enjoyed the movie. Thanks for your review! I watched Signs yesterday because aliens and Fourth of July seem to go together. This movie always freaks me out. It’s the only movie by this director I like. I had a really hard time sleeping last night, but I have a huge crush on Joaquin Phoenix so I just imagined him protecting me with a bat until I fell asleep. I think this movie is funny, creepy, emotional, and has a lot of depth. I really enjoyed watching your video!

I always thought this movie was great and still do. Very tense at times, I liked the way the horror and a man's loss of faith were mixed into the film. Even though I consider myself an atheist I never had a problem with the religious undertones and it played well in the movie. But you are right about some scenes where he should of CUT CUT CUT.
SIGNS A favorite to this day. Intense and interesting. I rented this movie.

Signs was like a 1950s big budget Alien movie that had atmosphere. I seen the film in a thx certified theatre and when the aliens were running around the house you could swear they were running around the theater. I noticed several people looking around.

Rome, thanks for this. The life of critic and now director Chris Stuckmann was changed by this and he went and put a big tattoo about it on his arm. I like it well enough but the Shyamalan movie I really like is Unbreakable, which may have been literally ahead of its time in its treatment of comics. One creepy movie you might be interested in, also featuring small gaunt skulking humanoids, is The New Daughter starring Kevin Costner. (A fan of The Birds, eh? Nope oddly reminded me of The Birds, but also the "crop duster dusting where there aren't any crops" scene from North by Northwest.) Hey, if anyone is too harsh with you, just sic the Godzilla peeking past your left shoulder on 'em. Very much appreciated, and owl be seeing you.

This one time in high school, the fire alarm went crazy and then we all evacuated. There was no fire and everything is fine, but as it went off someone yelled "aliens" and my mind went to this movie. Haha

Hi Jerome! This is a very fair-minded and thorough review and I enjoyed your breakdown of the film's strengths and weaknesses. I'm not a huge Shyamalan fan for some of the reasons you mentioned at the beginning (inconsistency, pushing absurdity sometimes, etc), but he has made a couple of really great movies. This is probably my second favorite of his. My favorite is "The Sixth Sense", precisely because I think it's his most cogent and least flawed film in addition to being very effective. Awesome review!!
I crack up when I see the 'why would aliens that have a problem with water invade a planet that's 70% water' argument. No one says 'why would a species that has a problem breathing carbon dioxide try to colonize a planet whose atmosphere is 95% carbon dioxide'. Someone better tell Elon that the whole Mars thing is off...

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I think it's Shyamalan's best movie...yes, even better than Sixth Sense. All the actors are at the top of their game...even the side characters. Of course, Gibson & Phoenix are great (Phoenix steals the show in my opinion when he's watching TV in the closet), the kids are great, the recruitment officer always creeped me out... and M Night Shyamalan himself is effective in portraying a character who is both haunted and remorseful about a past accident involving Gibson's character. I loved your insight! Swing away Jerome, Swing away!

Great job analyzing this film. The only issue I ever had was of course the water, however, as time passes it bothers me less because, as you stated, there are explanations and because the main point of the film is about a restoration of faith, which the film presents well as complex and interesting. Other aspects of the film are interesting and effective, as you mentioned, so that the water issue seems to be less important contrasted against all the positives. Again, great job and thanks for putting so much effort into making these reviews, I know a lot goes into them. Your writing is also very good. Cheers!

I saw SIGNS when it first came out, and somewhat dismissed it; to be honest , I don't really remember why. I may need to revisit the film.
As a Christian, I personally believe that (a) there are no aliens, and (b) such manifestations, like ghosts, are demonic. Still, considering the message of the film, this doesn't (or shouldn't) negate its effect. Thank you for another insightful, fun review, Sister Jerome!
I don't believe in aliens either (mostly, ha), and perhaps because of that I view them exclusively in the realm of science-fiction rather than grouping them with demonic figures (which I actively avoid on film).

@@Weiselberry I just watched SIGNS again (UA-cam), and I 'm glad that I did, particularly after your review. The issue of Providence is something I 'm wrestling with presently (my wife passed away three months ago), and the film reminded me that there are no coincidences in the presence of a sovereign God.
Beside that, this was a very taut film, managing to keep the tension going despite a previous view and your critique. I love Science Fiction, print and film, and SIGNS managed to tell a story without the cliche' choreography we've been used to since at least the Fifties. Don't get me wrong, sometimes that choreography is part of the fun, but this was rewarding.

I was going to suggest you review SIGNS, but then I just saw you already reviewed it.
I am a big fan of SIGNS and watch it maybe twice a year. However, I do have a few complaints about it, which you mentioned in your review (the loopy dialogue, etc.).
Also, I read recently that Shyamalan wrote SIGNS with Clint Eastwood or Paul Newman in mind playing Graham Hess because they had "haunted eyes". Eastwood wasn't acting at that time in favor of directing, and Newman wasn't interested in the role. Shyamalan then chose Mel Gibson, who also had the eyes for the role. I don't know if Gibson's father, who dropped out of the seminary because of his controversial views about Catholicism, were a factor in Gibson accepting the role of an Episcopal priest who has lost his faith in God.
I've always wondered if the spiritual aspects of the movie reflect Shyamalan's own personal views or whether it's just a plot device for the script and the surprise ending---my hunch is it's the latter.

I don't understand why M. Night generates the negative critiques that he does. There are plenty of filmmakers who have made both good and bad and flawed films. It seems like he gets more than his share of hate. Signs was the first of his that I saw. Like you, I appreciated the spiritual story that is really what the film is about. I'm glad you talked about that so directly. It is difficult to understand why God allows evil to happen. But what you said about God being in control, is true and very biblical. According to Acts 17 (and many other passages) he steps in at times, to meet specific needs. I've experienced this at key moments in my life, at least a few times.

I liked the movie but i think i would have liked it more if i had watched it when it released. Also i always thought the movie was unknowingly funny.
P.s. i really thought you're gonna hold your ending bye a lil longer for it to be awkward like in the movie 😂. Also you look beautiful as always.

Wonderful review. I have always enjoyed Signs precisely because of its messages about spiritual reaffirmation and little everyday miracles pointing to the existence of the divine. However I also appreciate that might be why it doesn't work for everyone. Unbreakable used to be my favourite M. Night Shyamalan film until he ruined it with the sequel Glass (I.M.O.). So now I guess Signs is my new favourite.
Excellent review! This is one of my favorite Shyamalan films. I also felt the Hitchcockian feeling that those opening credits gave. As an Atheist I still enjoyed the spiritual side of the film. I know it’s not the easiest thing to talk about but I’m glad you did. Even though I may not be a person of Faith I still respect and appreciate all view points. I hope no one is rude to you in the comments and thank you for sharing something personal. It’ll give me new perspective on a rewatch. I also wanted to add that I find the film to be uplifting maybe not in the sense of faith and spirituality but in love and family. I hope this isn’t rambley and scatterbrained.

Great analysis Jerome. I'm a big James Newton Howard fan and the combined two cues of The Hand of Fate on the soundtrack showcase how extraordinarily versatile his three note motif is - changing from horror and tension to optimism and hope.
What gets me is that water vapor exists in the air and if it burns their skin they shouldn't be able to walk around.
Maybe the moisture in the atmosphere has to reach a certain high level to affect them? Or maybe their issue is just with the particular application of liquid water to the skin? No idea. I did see something pointing out that the corn and grass they walk through would be covered in dew. That would be a problem for sure and a red flag long before they launch their invasion.

"The Village" is excellent. I think it is one of his best.
Signs is okay, people expect way too much based on who Shamalan is and what all he's done. Just on its own it works I guess.

rhythm.He seemed to somewhat abandon this rigid approach by Lady in the Water and incorporated more conventional methods
thereafter.Mark Ruffalo was originally cast in the Joaquin(Leaf)Phoenix role but had to drop out due to a serious health issue.
Some noted that the 18 year age difference between Gibson and Phoenix seemed unusual.I don't think that you would feel that
way at all.The water issue.I recall Shyamalan stating that it was not the water that killed the aliens but the bacteria in the water.
Or something like that.Logic restored.As Spock might say.It was Mel Gibson's idea to put on the preacher's collar at the end.
To show that his faith had been restored.I really liked the recent Nope which is obviously taking inspiration from Signs.
It has been a surprisingly divisive film.I found it very accessible.A bit slow to get going and I would have liked more of an

I don't own the movie anymore, but I did like the faith based subplot. The aliens creeped me out too.

I liked the movie overall, but I also had some issues with some of the plot. I think they could have cleared up a lot of the plot criticism by suggestion the aliens might be on earth by accident - which might explain why they didn't have much in the way of weapons. The "they wouldn't use bombs, etc." does not explain the lack of sidearms . . . or even clubs. But still a good flick. It's one of my wife's favorites.
Have you ever reviewed "Them!" from 1954? I've been watching your videos and haven't seen it if you have. That's one of my all time favorite Sci-Fi movies.
Hm, that could have been a good detail to slip in. The crop circles being left as navigation signals and landing markers prior to invasion suggests they *chose* this planet. That water--which there is so much of here--turns out to their weakness causes some viewers to question the aliens' so-called superior intelligence. It would have been better for the film if that criticism could have been avoided.
No, I have yet to review Them! I don't think I've even mentioned it before, which is odd, given how good and how influential it is. But it's definitely on the list of movies to discuss sometime. Thanks!

I remember watching this movie with my sister at the movie house when it first came out. I can't believe it was 20 years ago 😱 We both liked it a lot and I can still remember some details of it, even when I never rewatched it. I didn't know you had a review on Split. I'm going to watch it after I finish this video.

This looks like an interesting suspense movie in a nice setting, and the subplot in particular is something that I would find very appealing. I'm going to put it on my watch list.
I have only seen one Shyamalan movie and that was The Village. I'm aware of the criticism of Shyamalan's work in general but all I can say is that I enjoyed The Village. However, I've just finished rewatching a favourite miniseries of mine called Wayward Pines (2015) starring Matt Dillon. Shyamalan didn't write that series but he directed the first episode and apparently it's full of his hallmarks. I love that series and this was about the 6th time I've watched it.
Funny to hear about you sleeping facing the wall. When I try to sleep facing the wall with my back to the room I find my sleep can often be disturbed by a sense of uneasiness. Facing the room makes me feel much more comfortable. I assume it's an inherent survival sense. My old cat would always sleep securely between me and the wall, never between me and the open room.
Another person who enjoyed The Village! You're in good company here, and it seems many of my viewers like it too. Interesting, I don't think I've heard anyone talk about Wayward Pines before. Perhaps I'll check it out sometime.
Oh, I do struggle to fall asleep with my back to the room sometimes! It's my more comfortable side, though, so it's basically a necessity. I can only stand going to sleep on my back a couple times a month, and if I fall asleep on the other side, I have to have my legs in just the right position or I'll get hip pain the next day. Fun stuff. :)
@@Weiselberry That's the thing...facing the wall is naturally my comfortable side, but sometimes, especially after watching something spooky, I find I just have to roll over and face the other way! I could always move the bed to the other side of the room but then it would be under the window and Winter's coming, lol.
Wayward Pines is actually a very similar story to The Village but takes things to a whole other level. I won't say anything about it though in case you decide to watch it at some point. It relies heavily on mystery, so don't do any research beforehand. The story is good, it's shot very well and has a great cast. I stumbled upon it by accident and fell in love with it.
@@Ruby_Kang Yup, and that's why there are no scary movies allowed right before bedtime! Ha, I've considered moving the bed too, but there isn't any other place to put it besides under a window or in front of the closet door.
