I am a year younger than the late Adam Rich. May he rest in peace. I loved the show as a kid. Now as an adult with kids of my own, I am streaming the whole show, savoring each episode for its warmth and compelling performances. Such a likable family. I really think that Merle was one of the most winning and lovable characters on the show. He was strong and sensitive. His acting was so believable when he was confronting Susan's assertions of her own identity and needs. He was so sweet with Nicholas, and the season five episode in which Merle's daughter is born shows some profoundly good acting. Warm wishes to the "Eight is Enough" actors who remain, and special shout out to Brian, who seems to have left some wonderful comments for people writing here. I am very happy that I have been able to revisit full episodes on Tubi. This show offers a lot, and while it is a lot of 1970s gold, it transcends its seventies/eighties era because it is so relatable.
@MissX W Ok have it your way. I live in awful Philadelphia and it is not the same as it was 40 years ago. With all the killings and mean ignorant people here now especially the young people. And my friend all I am saying can be Proven!
In just a few years we went from The Waltons and Eight is Enough... to "Married...With Children." Granted, that show was intentionally dystopian but there was never again another show depicting traditional large families. Some have put blame on the shift in the socio-political climate of the 1980s. Ironic how the more "conservative" society became, the trashier it got. Can you imagine something like Honey Boo Boo on 1970s television? That's what happens when you destroy your middle class and its middle-class values. My grandparents must be spinning in their graves...
This actor that played Merle (Brian Patrick Clarke) ended up on General Hospital in 1983 playing this character named Grant. He was outstanding in the role and I remember it to this day!!
@@brianpatrickclarke5993 Hi Brian! I am Cheryl up here in Connecticut! (New Haven area). It is hard to believe that this year is 40 years since GH's Prometheus Disk storyline. @@TimDaniels-sz9pk Ahh, man! So sad! I named my son Adam, in part because of Adam Rich. I almost named my second son Nicholas. Thanks for letting us know.
I always say the title of this show in my head like “eight is ENOUGH” like a guy is asking his already exhausted wife for another baby and she’s like “John, eight. is ENOUGH.”
Dianne Kay was certainly a beauty, but Connie Newton was the one all the boys dreamed of! This one sure did! The addition of new characters often imbrues the chemistry of a good show, but Merle was a very welcome addition! Can't say the same for Ralph Macchio's character....
I loved the show, but I had a hard time warming up to the troubled Jeremy even if I felt for him. The dynamic in season five started to change a bit. It is still a good season, though.
Elizabeth was beautiful especially with her reall😢 long hair in the later seasons. A great episode was when she went on the pill. That was a risky topic for prime time television back in the late 1970’s.
@@SoUtHMeMpHisI remember a stormy night at the Bradfords with a Tony Perkins lookalike, perhaps season three if memory serves. I saw it recently on Tubi.
The episode where Merle gets called up I was on the field at dodger stadium, the camera scanned me real quick I saw myself on the show but can't find the clip of it.
Anyone wonder why they put such a heavy focus on Susan suddenly in the new season? Well, as it turns out, Susan Richardson actually got pregnant, against the studio's contract (yes, it was like that back then), and they reluctantly wrote it into the show, because Susan made a stink about hiding it, or utilizing her less. Despite what people think, women were already standing their ground back in the 70s and 80s. It's not a new concept. These women helped set the tone, although, it still not even close to perfect. Unfortunately, though, It's been documented that it was the nail in the coffin of the show, and what sealed the deal that there wasn't going to be many more seasons after that.
I hope Susan is doing better these days. Her life has been a bit hard, I hear. I wish all "Eight is Enough" actors the very best. Your performances gave me delight as a child and many years later enjoyment and wisdom as an adult.
Just an FYI, it was actually always in the show's "bible" that Susan and Merle would get married, then she'd get pregnant, she and Merle would split up (there was even an episode where Merle and his buddy, "Chapper", played beautifully by Jonathan Frakes, were heading to Puerto Rico for winter ball and Merle and Susan were at odds with one another) and Susan would move back into the Bradford House, where the family would help her raise the baby. Lorimar and ABC may have been many things, but they were not stupid; they'd never have precluded an actress from getting pregnant in 1979. Don't know where "it's documented", but it's "fake news", LOL! Hope this helps. 🙂
