  • This refrigerator tour shows you way to organize your fridge for meal prep, save money by actually using your leftovers and money by making your own condiments and ingredients from scratch. Get you free condiment recipe book here: tinyurl.com/2y.... In this video I share ways you use food preservation methods like canning, fermenting and dehydrating to get healthy (weeknight) meals on the table fast. I also show how easy it is to use homemade condiments so you can buy less market made brands and control what's in (and out) of the foods you prepare. Now let's get to organizing your mostly 'from scratch' fridge tour, meal prep and dinner ideas so that you can save time and money!

    Glad to see you store food in glass jars and bottles, not plastic. I do too. I have recently rid my kitchen of plastic storage containers even for leftovers. I was amazed at how much longer food lasts in glass over plastic containers. And it keeps my family from being tempted to retreat food in plastic. Love your channel.

      @@BecomingaFarmGirl Great to see you, too, Cassandra! I started my lactofermentation journey about 8 years ago when my daughter shattered her elbow, had to have a plate and screws put in...which trapped MRSA under the plate...and had to have them removed 4.5 weeks later. She was on some serious antibiotics which killed her gut flora...so I started researching how she could rebuild her gut flora naturally...which led me to probiotic foods. I've kind of gotten away from it over the past 6-8 months, but am ready to reexplore that journey for myself.

      It didn't always look like this, and its taken a little over a year half to assembly my glass jar collection and learn the basic recipes I shared. There is no rush (plus there are so many other recipes I still want to learn). Imma keep it real and let you know that I do not "get it all done"---sometimes I exchange a day of canning and meal prep while my laundry piles up or Thor (my dog) misses his bath or whatever else. But you know what, its all good. Life is too short not to have good food and grow a garden!

    I love the idea of fridge baskets, oh my goodness! I tried meal kits for a bit even though it just seemed like so much waste, because I would be tired on week nights and not want to have to think about dinner. Having things in a 'kit' that I put together when I have more energy is genius!

    • @BecomingaFarmGirl
      @BecomingaFarmGirl  2 роки тому +2

      Hi MaeLace! I’m telling you, fridge baskets are the answer for all the reasons you mentioned. Take tonight for example, I’m just getting home (it’s about 5:30) and knowing all I had to do was pull out my basket that already had the ingredients I need for a casserole never gets old! Clean up is quick, and sometimes I’ll put the leftovers back in the basket for another night. It’s definitely saving me money and time. Glad to hear you’re going to give this a try!

    Everything looks so good! I wish our fridge was big enough to handle enough baskets for all of our meals. Do you portion out your bread slices when you buy or make it? Or do you just toss the whole sliced loaf without separating it in the freezer?

    • @BecomingaFarmGirl
      @BecomingaFarmGirl  2 роки тому +1

      Hello Alyssa! Good to see you again. I always slice and portion out our bread slices. I’ve learned it’s less waste that way and bread defrosts quickly. I’m this video I suspected I would be a day or two short of bread BUT that was ok because we had the maple Dijon leftovers for lunch (and yes, then again on Sunday breakfast in the pie). If you can’t use baskets, maybe consider extra large plastic or reusable bags to group your items together?

    I always love a new video from you 💕! Everything looked delicious and I loved your tips about baskets for the fridge. I must say I was a little sad when I saw your fresh herbs lol. I live in Maryland too and the big storm we got at the beginning of January totally killed everything of mine. It has hurt to pay for produce again. Did you buy the frost covers for your green stalks to help them survive the snow? I'm kicking myself that I didn't 😑

    • @BecomingaFarmGirl
      @BecomingaFarmGirl  2 роки тому

      Hi Zakia! It’s good to see you too. And yes, all this snow took everything out except for my rosemary (and that’s looking sad). These are herbs my neighbor, who keeps a small indoor herb collection (which I probably need to do each winter). I didn’t purchase the frost covers yet because I purchased the plant supports. I have frost sheets from Lowes that I’ll be fine to use because the Green stalk ones are very nice but whoa like 50.00 each. And yes, the fridge baskets are my favorite fridge Jack. It’s really a time saver! Stay warm this weekend! It looks like it’s only a dusting but the forecast is also calling for freezing rain.

    Wow loved this so much! I’m going to check out that plant based cookbook. How long would you say the condiments last? My problem with homemade condiments is that we don’t use them consistently so the one time I made mayo I used it once and then had to throw it away a week later because never used it again in my meals 😕

    • @plurnagaoithe
      @plurnagaoithe 2 роки тому

      I can’t answer the specific question, but lots of condiments (not mayo) could be frozen, water bath canned, or pressure canned in small jars so you don’t have a ton in the fridge at one time. For things like mayo, you can plan meals that use it - other than sandwiches as the obvious, things like potato, tuna or cucumber salads, green goddess or salad dressings, spinach artichoke dip, burgers… there are lots of ways you can find to use it up in a week or two.

    • @BecomingaFarmGirl

      Plurnagaoithe (Hello! I don’t think I’ve said hi before-THIS ANSWER is Amazing and speaks exactly to what I do. It’s not that I always have a ready supply of ever ingredient in my fridge like you do when you buy from the store-it’s that if I need it in a pinch (outside of planned meals) I can make it fresh because I likely have those ingredients. Does this make sense?
