The skins and insignia in this video are not 100 % accurate. There's only one single skin for the A-10A in European green (used by A-10s in Desert Storm) and it's for the wing from England Air Force Base. Thank you for your understanding!
I heard a briefing by one of the A10 squadron commanders. He said General Horner started giving them so many taskings the maintainers and pilots were being pushed beyond their limits and asked if some other type of aircraft could take some of those missions till they could catch up on their maintenance and rest cycles.
Operation NORMANDY is well known, but the package used during that strike isn’t. Two formations of six helicopters each were used, but they weren’t all Apaches. The two lead aircraft in both formations were 20th Special Operations Squadron MH-53Js from the USAF, each with four AH-64s. The unusual formation was due to the Apache’s inadequate navigation system which was designed for European operations. The MH-53Js had the most advanced navigation systems of that time and they were used as pathfinders for the Apaches. Once the MH-53s dropped a bundle of chemlights for the Apaches to do their final update to fire on the early warning sights, the MH-53s turned south allowing the Apaches an unobstructed target to take out. It was an unusual, but very successful operation to open up a corridor into southern Iraq for coalition forces.
Love A-10’s! Actually A-10C was the first aircraft I did studied among the DCS’s roster. And even now after several others studied aircrafts this one is still the one I love most.
well its a good job that they did something apart from hitting friendly troops and failing to destroy tanks, (F111 with LGBs) big gun go burr all over the place, friend or foe, nah not important, big gun go burr
The A-10A even flew at night to attack targets. We had to keep their illuminating flare pods cleaned and loaded with 8 Luu-2 flares that burned at 2 million candle power as they dropped by parachute..The Iraqi forces never slept as they were attacked noght and day by the A-10.
A10 from tank hunters, S.A.M killers, the type of Radar that was destory by A 10 that was killed is Bar Lock type radar that direct and control air traffic .
The kicking of of Opeaion Desert Storm on Iraqi radar and early warning stations by Apaches was well publicised. But the attack by A-10 on the remaining stations is certainly unheard of. Thanks for the great video. Hope you could do one on Harriers. General Schwarzkopf credited it as one of the most important aircraft in ODS.
Thanks for another comment. A-10s were even sent to atrack Iraqi SAM sites among other things. Harrier played an interesting (and also a bit overlooked) role in DS. I should cover some of that too.
Thanks for the positive feedback! Your comment was labeled by YT as 'potentially suspicious' and I've only seen it now. That's one of those cases I can't really explain.
@@pollock_madlad No need to apologize. I am quite puzzled why the comment ended up in that category. I guess they haven't really tuned everything right 😁
One of the best aircraft out there. Designed for the German plain but resilient. Formidable piece of engineering. Pity they are retiring them. The trio F16-F15-A10 is definitely unbeatable right now
Looks like there are always room to improvise in the way assets are used, especially when there is a shortage of properly specialized hardware for each job description.
You did a nice job with the night scenes, not too dark or light. Where were the Iraqi manpads? Used up during the nine year Iran war? Is it necessary to support the channel on paypal? According to UA-cam your income over three years is $349,000. Not enough?
349 thousand?!?!???!? Somali dollars? 🤣🤣🤣 I don't know what kind of a fantasy page you looked at but that number is absurd. It's not even ten percent of that. On the average, creators can make about two dollars per thousand views from ads. Before tax. In the first seven months of this year, the channel made about 4500 usd from ads (before tax), about 500 usd from sponsors, about 900 from Patreon and donations. And about 40 usd from affiliate marketing. You need to be HUGE to make the amount you mention.
Actually Iraqi air defense was at a massive disadvantage by lack of Satellite cover to relay information Hence the very low rate of aircraft Losses . I had two good friends who served in AWACS aircraft they always said that if the USSR had shared information with Iraqi air defense It would have become very costly.
Lets just say your friend is BS'ing you as sattalite coverage wouldnt do crap aside from telling them the obvious and there useless against aircraft either
@@gotanon9659 actually AWACS is a troposphere satellite he was explaining. It's a bit like look down radar which The Soviets especially Mig25 used Invested heavily.. Remember majority of AWACS aircraft are now retired use k 135 With satellite coverage The patriot system uses satellite Tracking radar . My friend works for Bae systems now .
It was actually RAF Tornados that went in first to remove the Iraq air defences before the merikans could go in, they do so love re-witing history. Being able to fly at 100-ft off the deck ground-following hands-off the stick at night or in murky conditions meant they could do what the USAF could not do, and destroy radar, airfield and missile sites. The Tornado was not strictly ground attack but a replacement for the Vulcan. Eight Tornados were lost in all.
While I haven't studied Tornado involvement in the Desert Storm in such depth, it seems to me that you are talking about a very different thing. Early in the war, Tornados went after Iraqi airbases mostly while some were flying SEAD missions with Alarm missiles. Some might have attacked radars but I am yet to find any such detail. A-10s on the other hand did attack numerous radar sites in the first few days of the operation and whatever Tornados did, it doesn't diminish the A-10 success.
SAMs couldn't cover the entire Iraqi airspace. But also, they generally keep their radars off not to reveal their position. They were probably only supposed to activate if a large strike formation came within range. A couple of A-10s wasn't seen as a lucrative enough target to risk destruction I guess.
Hello showtime. Are you in holidays!!. A10 was also used like"Sandy", Skyraider in Vietnam for Combat SAR opérations with hélicos MH60 or MH53( don't remember) for Alliéd coalition ejected pilots. Only 6 Lost in Gulf War. 2 pilots Killed but only one during emergency landing: A10 starting rolls and ended on canopy. The A10 losses are more in training than in différents combats it was engaged!!!!
Hello! A couple more days left 😁 Yes, the A-10 guys were joking by putting all different letters next to the type's designation to indicate all the roles it played in the conflict. It ended up being OAF-10G or something like that 😂

highest losss/sortie rate of all coalition air force types engaged in DS
The friendly fire incident of those ah64s during desert storm was hard to listen to.

I don't think I was aware of Warthogs going radar busting during the Gulf War. I thought they were only destroying tanks!
They did a lot in DS. They were even sent against SAM sites as proper Wild Weasels.

Exactly. Most aircraft are asked to do something they were not designed for and no air force can afford purely specialized models for everything.

The word 'unlikely' actually refers to the A-10 because it is really not the first aircraft you would think of for the anti-radar task.
