And bam. Injured. Like me every time I stretch. This video was exactly what I was searching for. Every single time I stretch I somehow manage to injure myself. So I decided to look up what I'm doing wrong. Seems like your channel is exactly where I belong! 😂❤
Exactly what I needed. I’ve been doing hatha yoga but was confused bec. I felt u focused not knowing what I was doing, looking around to see what the others were doing. I thought I was doing something wrong by needing to know what I was doing instead of just trying to do stretches blindly.
I've been sitting in a forward down position so long my muscles have literally been pulled over and down over my shoulders, my whole body has done this, and every muscle in my body is literally in knots, so stretching isn't doing anything to help. I actually came up with a way to open up my muscles using hand and finger gestures that help me focus on one muscle at a time . I use my thumb and another finger on the same hand to open muscles, put your thumb and another finger pinched together then focus on a really tight muscle then open your fingers slowly, do this until you can feel your muscle opening up, I don't know what this is called but I figured it out on my own and I wish other people knew how, it has actually worked really well. There's alot more to it, you have to focus on relaxing the muscle you want to open. It takes time and practice. And the more you try it the better you get at it and the more of an understanding that every muscle is connected to another. It's really amazing.
Hi. Is it practical for you to do a video recommending movements for those suffering from , say, severe leg/hip arthritis and/or spinal/ lumber stenosis. Again, thanks much for such practical, useful tips - and your humor!
Hello Matt follow your steps for Posture, bending knees back towards the wall, it hurts for a while but then I feel normal, I'm getting use to it now feel comfortable
this helps so much! ive been struggling to recover my flexibility in my ankles after a prolongued period being bedridden (moved into a new place TWICE on a sprained ankle and broken toe 😬) this really helps thank you 😭😭🩷
I learned that I’ve been stretching incorrectly my whole life!!! I have very tight muscles - anyone who touches me (chiropractor, physiotherapist, osteopath, husband) says how tight I am…yeah I know!!! It causes me problems every day! Thank you for sharing your knowledge - I’m looking forward to increased flexibility at a safe pace.
A lot of information packed into a simple title. Good video. Yes, I routinely do stretches, many like these, and do work on sustaining for longer periods of time. I do that partly because so many stretches also include strengthening.
This was very helpful, thank you! I have stretched my whole life and am quite flexible and hyper mobile but seriously lack the strength to protect my joints. I feel like I finally understand when I need to stop pushing the movement, build strength and how to protect myself.
While streaming you tube, I came across your channel and give it a try. And I like it!!! I like it cause you explain everything which is for me very helpful. Thank you so much for sharing 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Another good place in a corner facing the corner left hand on left wall & right hand on right wall, then just lean forward slowly till you feel the stretch across your chest. You may need to play with the distance you stand from the corner.
Hello Matt from Australia. Firstly great instructional video with a lot of amazing tips & suggestions. I was wondering if you comment on how stretching works for Hyper mobile people please? I have spent a good part of the last 20+ years daily stretching based on what appears to be now be a lot of old, unsupported information that may be simply wasting my time. I'm essentially stuck in my own RIPS as these "stretches" are my safety net. My head/body is struggling to surrender to this new wave of information & even though I am possibly no closer to getting out of daily pain I have convinced myself that these "stretches" at least keep me going & I would be way worse without them. My recent diagnosis of Hyper mobility has opened a whole new & unexplored world for me & I desperately need some information. Obviously I can ramble on all day but I will leave it there & wait with baited anticipation.
the timing of your videos is always hilarious. I JUST recently started having life changing breakthroughs on stretches which was a result of me realizing I needed to engage the muscle I was targeting to get it to start to relax. Many, many years of incorrect stretching, and you just confirmed I wasn't crazy. Do you have any videos on releasing the upper chest / sternum area? Turns out I've been so tight in my chest for 20+ years that it lead to a twisted pelvis and sinus problems, and now I need to lengthen my upper chest regularly somehow.
I seem to have no muscle in my upper back thigh, hamstring.😢 and I feel the stretching behind my knee. This is due to being in a wheelchair for 4 years and major back surgery with titanium from my l3 to my secrum screws in my pelvis and titanium SI Joints and both upper thigh bones fused to my hips. Now 2 and 1/2 years later I'm lifting dumbbells with my upper body and deep squats. Planks for my core and my glutes as well. Nothing seems to work! 😢 can you help me! I'm sure you won't see this but just sharing it helps release some frustrating emotions.

I think any kind of stretching is fruitless without understanding the nature of the musculoskeletal system as a tensegrity structure. You gotta understand your body as a whole using biomechanical analysis to understand where the tension is coming from.
Hey Matt appreciate the video. A question for you. I have been doing your 3 step stretches. Bent leg for hamstring, squat and sitting on chair lifting legs up. To reach doing Asian squat. Being in my sixties I reach the point where I can squat way lower now like 6 six inches from touching the back of my ankle. Can hold it there for 30 seconds. The only issue when I reach that point the hamstrings still tightness. No pain. It took my like 5 months to reach this point. Should I add the hamstring you are demonstrate. Appreciate your answer
Good reminder to stretch muscles in all directions. You're right the muscles need to feel safe so they'll relax! And thanks for answering the question I was going to ask lol! How often! I strive for a daily stretch/joint mobility practice with two days of easy strength work (adapted from the healthy hips program.) Was having a rough day of pain today, did a different leg stretch as I watched the video and thighs seem happier now. Thanks Matt! 😊👍✨

Every single person should see this video. So many people just stretch because "stretching is easy" right?

Great video would you be able to share how other body parts other than the ones being stretched are supposed to be positioned

17:00 TRY A DOORWAY for that shoulder stretch. You can get all those angles too. Or those wall angel-angles, grin.

Can you show us how to do side splits from legs only 20 degrees apart to fully split. How long it takes and best stretches for beginners
Loved this! Thank you 😊
Really great video. Only silly question: what to do on rest days to maximise recuperation?
Do you have any exercises for degenerative discs for the thoracic area at the middle to lower part of my shoulder on my right side
Hi UH, Thank you for the information on how to stretch properly. Do you have a video routine on how to get to a full side split? Thanks! John R.
What angle will help relieve heel pain (plantar fascitis) from stiffness ?

How many minutes do I warm up before stretching and what would I do to warm up
Thank u very much I learned something

Hello I broke my pelvis and groin in a car accident. Now free years of recovery I am tight and need to stretch my groin back out what do you suggest
How about passive stretching like restorative yoga.

How do you stretch out tight glute muscles?
To unstretch and the restretch is the only way to truly stretch based off of several health and fitness studies.
Thank you sir.....
