    Went through this severe headache after my hemorrhoid surgery involving spinal anaesthesia.
    Had the surgery on Monday. Started getting this excruciating pounding in my head and neck from Tuesday morning. Asked my doctor what it is. He didn't give any explanation but advised me to have 3 cups of black coffee everyday.
    Came home on Tuesday eve. The pain goes when lying down. Just when I get up, head starts thumping. Although I love coffee, the issue is i was not able to sit upright to have it.
    Wednesday saw a video and i was so scared after reading the comments from people who have had this for months.
    Anyways, i spent wed, thur, fri, sat, sun and mon with the same headache. Tried drinking coffee 3 times a day by lying down using a straw and all. Also had a lots of water.
    On the next Tue, i found that by eve i could sit upright with a feeble pounding.
    And to my surprise, the next day (wed) when I got up in the morning, expecting a pounding, there was nothing.
    I was so relieved.
    So people, don't worry..
    As the doctor says, have a lot of fluids and caffeine. And if it's possible for u, lie down a lot. This will surely get cured.

      Exactly same as Sassy above, happened with my brother. He had an abdominal operation last Monday 27 Feb 2023, and was given epidural anaesthesia. Monday night itself the neck pain began to build up. We thought it to due to cervical etc so applied volini and did some message plus hot pad. By following evening it became unbearable. That’s when the anaesthetist came running and asked him to lay straight, drink lots of fluids and caffeine.
      I came across this video and write up above by Sassy. It opened the door of further understanding the subject and we fathomed that the anaesthetist apparently punctured the dura while giving the anaesthesia which has caused CSF from brain to leak and hence these SEVERE headaches. Brain which floats in this fluid, gets pulled down when this fluid depletes. Doctors of course didn’t accept this for reasons one can fathom, except a decent neuro-surgeon who had the decency to accept it in as many words.
      Anyway any time the neck became vertical the horrible pain came back. On Friday he passed motions and that put extra pressure on head so even lying down supine also didn’t help, neither did meds. He suffered from 10 am to 4 pm very bad pain.
      Today is Monday and I came to meet him in the morning. He was grinning ear to ear. His pain was gone, exactly in 7 days.
      Conclusions: any dura puncture take 7-10 days to get filled/ self heal/ self repair- thereby repairing the puncture. Once puncture is repaired, the CSF, which brain seems to generate aplenty- 3 refills a day, gets filled again with brain floating well again. And pain vanishes.

    I had the worst headache for like 15 days after a foraminal block. I thought I was going to have a heart attack , probably because I was scared. I kept calling back the clinic and the receptionist told me it wasn’t related. Even my doctor told me it was anxiety. I slept 12 hours a day for one week. Now I’m scared to go back for my next infiltration.

      Is it ok now ? If you have to go next time, clearly let them know (MAINLY the anesthesian) that u suffered for 15 days because of the CSR fluid leak.. they should be knowing about this..

      @@sforsassy6072 it was ok after 20 days but is there supposed to be an anesthesiologist? It was physiatrist with two nurses who did the procedure with local anesthesia. I’m supposed to go back in August or September but I’m scared , I worry it might be dangerous despite my doctor saying it’s perfectly safe to get 4 times a year. I also cannot take multiple 2 weeks vacations per year to lay down in the dark with a headache . I told my doctor about the fluid leak , I saw it online and she dismissed it as being anxiety and exaggeration 🤷🏼‍♀️…Sorry for the late reply i just got a notification today.

    For me the headache lasted 3 weeks. It's normal to last 3 weeks. I drank lots of water and bedrest without pillow or minimum pillow. I changed chair and bed too.Please change chair or bed if it's not going away soon. Wish you all good health.❤

    Caffeine seemed to be working for me
    I have been able to sit, stand and walk around for one hr straight..after two cups of coffee. I couldn’t even raise my head for two minutes before that.
    Caffeine, fluids, lying down.. that’s what I have been doing and it’s getting better.
    I pray I get healed completely

    Anesthesiology resident here.
    The headache is caused by the drainage of your Cerebral Spinal Fluid, the leakage of the CSF will continue untill the hole in the spine closes, your brain is very sensitive to the loss of CSF which explains the headache, also the leakage happens at a faster rate than the production of CSF, so the brain floating mechanism is disturbed that's why laying down helps.
    Caffeine helps by increasing the production of the CSF, so drink lots of coffee and take paracetamol pills that contains caffeine.
    If the pain continued for more that 3-6 weeks an epidural blood patch will help, or you will get a second hole in your spine (a spinal tap) and therefore more pain.
    Important notes: make sure you stop taking anti blood coagulation agents before you get the spinal anesthesia.

    I had an epidural migraine when the Anastasiologist OD me after my 2nd kid was born, when I was to get my tube's cut and tied....they regularly tilt the bed with your feet above your head...my head felt like it was going to EXPLODE!...they wouldn't listen to me so I told them if they couldn't listen to me then they weren't operating on me...unfortunately, that meant my kids' dad tricked me into another kid!...after the last kid I spoke to the new personnel about it and they told me what really happened nearly 3 yrs earlier..I was able to get fixed that time...I've had migraines off and on for decades after the Army..but NOTHING felt as bad as that epidural migraine!!

    I’m going on 914 days of a continuous headache. I’ve had a blood patch but failed, I’ve had MRI’s and CT’s and they have showed no leak, it makes no sense because I have all the symptoms of a CSF leak and it’s taking a toll on me big time, any ideas on what I should do?

    • @MedicalCentric
      @MedicalCentric  Місяць тому

      @theivth3943 I'm really sorry to hear about your continuous headache. Since you've already explored blood patches and imaging, it may be worth seeking a second opinion from a specialist in neurology or a CSF leak expert. You could also consider less common causes, like intracranial hypertension or other pressure-related issues, and explore advanced diagnostic methods or therapeutic trials. Stay strong-persistent issues like this can be tough, but new approaches may still help.

    • @MedicalCentric
      @MedicalCentric  3 місяці тому

      For those unable to undergo blood transfusions due to personal beliefs, alternative treatments for epidural headaches include intravenous fluids, caffeine, and an epidural blood patch procedure using the patient's own blood. ❤️
