    • @DenyThisFlesh

Not all strong scents will trigger one for me, but certain ones will. Cleaning products with a strong chemical smell really bother me. I once had a major migraine triggered by new rubber mats being put in at my work. You know, the ones they put down so office chairs don't tear up the carpet. Yeah. I was also taking a medication at the time that increased my sensitivity to smells as a side effect. That smell still bothers me to this day, but I'm not as sensitive to it now.

I actually abused painkillers when I was younger so I can't even use them unless it's serious bc i need a higher does for them to even work. Good thing I have i pretty high pain tolerance. But it takes a lot of work to get to that level, and over the years the resistance I unintentionally built up has started to fade. As long as you don't take more than it says on the package you should be fine.

Be careful, a friend of me always took a lot ibuprofen and he died with only 36. Ok, he also only drank coffee, never water and ate unhealthy, but still. Please take good care for your body. And drink a lot of water if you use them...

    • @babsikro1252
      @babsikro1252 3 роки тому +6

That is really not good! Overuse happens when you use painkillers to often over a certain amount of times. For example everyday for a month or longer. Sporadic use isn't harmful and normally doesn't cause rebound migraine. Having high painlevels and just tolerating them can actually trigger your nerves. You don't get more tolerate to pain, instant you get more sensible. Again it is about having strong pain for a long period. Good pain-management and pain medication is actually really important for you body. I always thought it would be better to just sit through the pain. But as I started medschool I learned how wrong that is.

10 more triggers according to my migraine journal:
    1. Red wine (specifically)
    2. Citrus
    3. Excess sugar consumption
    4. Dehydration
    5. Not enough sleep
    6. Too much sleep
    7. Ovulation
    8. Menstruation
    9. Stress
    10. Bright lights (bright direct sunlight, spotlights, headlights)
Despite my efforts, I still have around 15 migraine days per month. I’m finally taking steps in seeking treatment and hoping to find a solution! I want my life back!

A suggestion (noting it could be wrong) looking at your list…investigate mast cell disorders and mast cells generally. They absolutely cause migraine (and ironically migraine can cause mast cell issues) but I’d have a look into this. Note: it comes under an immune system issue. And mast cells behave slightly differently in all different parts of body. Why is it helpful? Because the treatment is radically different!! Good luck!

Me too, sort of. I got it from my mom who feels pressure in her head and sinuses before a storm, though I'm more sensitive. I can tell when a storm is brewing and depending on how bad the headache gets I can tell how intense the storm will be. Thankfully the pain never lasts more than a couple hours (if I'm weathering the storm), and when it stops it does so completely and suddenly with no lingering effects, as if my head adjusts to the different pressures and stops blaring the alarm. Driving from state to state is really weird though. Depending on how far I drive I can pass through multiple storm fronts, so the whole trip is pain..no pain....pain..no pain...................pain..no pain..pain..no pain.......pain..no pain, etc. 😂

As a human biologist, I think we're not really aware how sleep influences our brain. Bad sleep quality cannot only cause headaches but also induces changes in brain activity. If we sleep less than 7 hours a night over a long period of time it can even lead to a decrease of new cells in the hippocampus which is important for forming memory (I just made a video about this). Bad sleep quality can even contribute towards symptoms which are seen in Alzheimers disease..

Same. I have specific personal care brands I use because I know the scent won't trigger/aggrevate migraines. Mint seems to be the best, followed by REAL lemon or lime (artificial citrus scents are tossup). I've also found most "unscented" items still have a scent, and some of those have a chemical smell that causes issues.

I’ve always been sensitive to strong smells as well. My husband has this one cologne I cannot stand. He will do less than one spray, and it still bothers me. @AkiliLiela 3 роки тому +8

@@wonderwoman4726 it's sadly, mostly a guessing game. I am a side sleeper, so I need a bigger pillow. I have 2 kinds, one temprapedic and one I got from a chiropractor office. And I go back and forth.. Depending on firmness of your bed, how you sleep, and personal preferences makes a bit of a difference.
General rule, side sleepers need more support so firmer and thicker is better, with a softer mattress (for your shoulder) and back sleepers need a soft pillow, if at all, and a firmer mattress. Really, a rolled up towel would be fine for back sleepers and it goes under the NECK not head. Stomach sleepers need a special pillow. It's called a face cradle and it's what used in massage so you don't have to look far left or right. Or I guess a neck pillow would work too. Hope that helps point you in the right direction at least. Without seeing you, it's the best I can say.

You really should see a doctor - I have chronic migraines and I have to take prescription medication. It's not a thing that goes away on its own. Keeping a headache journal is great! I've had them for years so it's already a habit (I've gone through rounds of treatments for years) and it's really handy when you go see a doctor. It helps you notice certain patterns. Write down the date, time, intensity and duration of the headache, what pills you took, etc. Make notes of how many hours of sleep you got, and the quality of your sleep. Other things that help me are cold compresses when the codeine isn't enough (the ice really helps numbing it down enough so I can sleep), darkness (bright lights can be a trigger), and massages. Sometimes even a hot shower helps, too. But the very first thing my doctor had me do was fix my sleeping schedule. I thought it was useless but it really did help. And some people swear by acupuncture! Best wishes!

What type of painkillers? The type can dictate how long you can take them before the potential for rebound or withdrawal effects set in. For instance, the most common type of medication to treat migraines is called a triptan (there are multiple varieties within this type) and assuming you don't have any underlying medical conditions, you can safely take up to NINE triptans in a month before suffering from rebound.

I first figured out that I'm prone to weather triggered migraines a number of years ago during a particular last stormy spring. The weather would be really nice for a few days, but then suddenly a storm would come along. A few hours or so before the storms would hit, the change in air pressure would cause me to have a migraine. I'd already had migraines for about a decade and had figured out most of my triggers, but this one eluded me. Then a friend who's also a sufferer of migraines told me about the weather thing, and I started putting the pieces together. It's the one migraine trigger I can't do anything about, but I've learned what works for me to minimise it.
Other triggers for me are dark chocolate, caffeine from pop, especially Coca~Cola, old cheese, and being on my phone or laptop too much.
At work I have to wear my hair back, at least when I'm doing tasks, and I wear a headband to keep the sweat out of my eyes.
When I'm done with the start of shift tasks, that headband comes off, and I usually don't need it the rest of the shift, as my job is really, really quiet. I have to wear my hair back fairly tightly, but, like the headband, my hair is let loose when I'm not doing anything at work or just going on security checks (I work straight nights in a care facility for the elderly). Lately, because my hair is longer, I've started putting my ponytail back with a claw clip. This way I don't need my ponytail to be too tight, and it's a lot easier to put back.
I used to wear very light perfumes, but I don't even do this anymore, both because I've developed a sensitivity to various scents, and because I know others who have this. For me, scents are mainly a breathing issue, but certain ones also trigger headaches for me.
Thank-you, Doctor Mike, for putting videos out like this one.

I once had a migraine for 3 days.
At the time I couldn't take medicine, eat most food, or drink anything other than water.
If had I drank anything other than water I would vomit.
If I tried to take medicine I'd vomit.
If I tried to get up to make food I'd vomit.
If I ate anything other than soft food like porridge (cream of wheat) or chicken noodle soup I'd vomit.
I was really hungry because I threw up all of my food I had just ate on the first day. (I ate dinner around 6:30pm) I had to sit there because I couldn't even get up and my mom walked into my room to check up on me at around 12:00pm. I told her I was really hungry and she made me porridge (cream of wheat).
When I had this migraine I wouldn't get up unless I was really really hungry, really really thirsty, or really had to use to the restroom.
I skipped eating lunch once because it was so bad that getting up wasn't possible.
All I could do was sleep most of the time. I tried watching something on my phone like a UA-cam video or Netflix but couldn't even do that.
I was so bored during those 3 days that I just hoped to fall asleep again even when I just woke up.
All I did was, go to the bathroom, eat, drink, and sleep.
    It was the worst.

I’ve had migraines since 1998 that I’ve been on Rx medications for. I can absolutely confirm that sleeping wrong and overusing medications can definitely trigger them. Strong, chemical smells (like a permanent markers), and bright lights in a dark room (TV or Phone on, while rest of the lights are off), also trigger them. One thing about the medication use though, it’s important that doctors do not immediately cut patients off of these medications, because this causes pain and stigma. Don’t over-prescribe, but also know there are patients with legitimate pain who use (not abuse) medications responsibly, and hurting these patients due to abusers (a completely separate group of people), is not fair and causes more pain in people with actual pain. I’ve seen this, and I’ve experienced this.

I found a correlation to all the items that you stated. I pay attention to what I do prior to my headache and pretty much self diagnose, as to why! The only thing I’m not guilty of is too many Tylenol, I actually take excedrin which is soooo bad for you…. I try to drink a ton of water, it seems to soothe my headache. Cheese, never gives me a headache but great to know. You did not mention too much sugar. I find if I have too much sugar I get a serious pounding headache. I guess that’s just me. Again, thank you for being such a great and accurate doctor! Appreciate you!
