Whats the one that use to be down quay st. Akl, live gig venue... Shadows? One night there were 3 bands lined up...we had bumped into Graham Brazier, and we had a good ol chat, looked like he had a skinfull , as he had a bit of sway on...nek minute we see him up on stage belting it out on the mic with his band...we were like, wtf? How did he manage pull that off! Unbelievable, only a true muso.. RIP Graham
The Gluepot upstairs, the corner bar. Drinking with Islanders in the public bar. Java Jive around the corner in three lamps. Shane Wills use to play there. Uncle's food bar! Early 90s
I worked at the Gluepot for the last 3 years. Your interview is in the corner bar, the vista bar (public bar) was down a lot of long corridor. The stones played upstairs two weeks before I started. Dave Dobbin played Bliss as the last song on the last night. The manager and some of us staff moved to the powersation after it closed to build that as a venue.
Wow there's alot of other places that were around back in the day like punch and Judy's on fort st, Park in the bar, cactus Jack's in the finance plaza, the blues barn, jds nightclub, utopia bar, rose and crown, and lots out west, east south and north shore
Hi Shae, love this series.I own a bar/music venue in Warkworth (just north of Auckland)in the middle of our CBD.noise has been an issue, but we found the noise laws change at 11pm,so we just run bands up untill the 11 cutoff, and is working out good. The biggest problem ive found however is bums on seats.Getting people to come to gigs is the real challenge. However we are determined and up for the challange!Long live rock,n,roll!cheers🍺
Initially the stage at the Powerstation used to be near the front entrance . Saw The Cramps there when it was like that. Then years later they were back and the stage was at the other end. Managed to play there a number of times myself. Great memories of that time .
I saw Sonny Day and the Ponsonby Express upstairs at the Gluepot. Check out their song "Saving Up". Shihad at Aotea square and Power Station, there was surfing and diving they were nice and loud and proud always, Rock On guys, cheers.
Love this. I remember (accidentally) finding myself at a shoot for one of Shihad’s videos a couple of decades ago - very cool. More of these videos please 👏🏻
3:22 Up on the right of screen, that white barrer I was standing there waiting to enter the Auckland town hall for the 9th May 2001 Pantera concert. Still the best show I've ever seen. Dimebag was every bit as good as people say... 4:47 I remember seeing Parkway Drive on their first time out of Australia. There were maybe a few hundred people for the entire gig at the kings arms. It got shut down because of sound curfews in the area. Still a great gig though.
A memory of Jon interviewed maybe end of the 90s on tv by a music show of some sort they walk into the Rockshop browsing guitars Jon picks one up plugs it and played the opening riff to Master of Puppets complete with headbang, enjoyed that him and I had a love in common. No idea why I have that tiny memory so far back I just remember Jon Toogood, Rockshop, Master! Master!
shihad is the band ive seen most live. i have devolve and kiljoy on vinyl! best tour imo was blue light disco tour. live @ ministry in chch they opened with inter-connecter and no gap straight into lala land. best opening ever.
Thanks for mentioning Aaron tokona, he was in music class at Naenae, I played with his youngest brother tuma in a band, fond memories of Aaron practicing satriani for hours after school the best muso gone too soon
I will always fondly remember being at Shihad's first ever pub gig at the Clarendon Tavern in Welly. As I remember Jon and co were all underage at the time. Kia ora Jon from JJ - Bump'n Ugly.
I remeber the powerstation when it was called the Galaxy. Saw the angels play there in 87. Still the loudest most raucus gig I have ever been to . Was truely epic.
great vid man..........Love the Powerstation got to see Steve Adlers Adlers Appetite for destruction gig there with a few ISLANDER heavy metal fans........that was a dope night.....think it was after GNR played Western Springs 2017.......
I saw Shihads first gig at the BNU soccer club rooms in Brooklyn Wellington. Metallica and Motor Head covers, Ace of spades I think they played. Punks and skins slam dancing, this was the late 80's if I remember correctly. Johnny was always very approachable at parties or if you saw him on Cuba street. Top lad. I remember I saw him at a mates party about ten or so years ago and I rolled a big fat joint. He told his misses off for hogging it and told her to hurry up and pass it on, fucking funny as fuck.
Back in 2007 I mused to a colleague at work… “Wouldn’t it be great to see The Datsuns play at The Kings Arms?” Two years later it happened for real! Awesome gig but unfortunately they had to finish up early due to noise complaints from some local residents. Also went to KA’s final night as well. Definitely a loss to the live music scene in Auckland.
I played at kings arms with stereo gram and 48may , but never got to play gluepot, but saw hello sailor and Renee Geyer apparently was the last gig there
Jon Baker brought White Stripes over before they got huge . There was no stage early days of Kings Arms and bands would play in the garden bar or in the corner backing on to the garden bar . The Kurtz Lounge kind of provided a larger option for bands after the Gluepot closed . We also had The Rising Sun for a while .
The Shakespeare 80's, early 90's had live music. Gary Powell band, Al Young blues band. The Star Hotel. Use to be a club on Quay St had live bands mid 80's. What was the club up Victoria St on 3 or 4 levels mid 80's? Had the girls in cages! Midge Marsden had a great show at the Gluepot NY E 1990. Still got the t shirt . I'm showing my age!
I stayed just around the way from the Gluepot on Pember Peeves Ave and Shelly beach Road for about 6 months back in 1984....... Twelve Tribes of Israel was just down the Road.......
At the gluepot the corner bar was for small bands .then there was a large public bar pool hall back up the road a bit (next door) but the big bands played upstairs. I saw the Jagger gig and have a load of photos. Tickets were handed out by a radio station..I snagged 6 for me and my mates. People were offering us $1000 cash for our tickets. . No one took the money.
You would've walked into the toilets the way you fullas entered the building where the Kings Arms was. The front side facing the road was the 'public bar'. And then they had the other bar out the back with the stage at the southern end. There was also an entrance on that end out to a carpark. That's France St South for everyone else who is wondering where it is.
Bang on about egos in music. Most of the legendary cats I've met or got to be mates with are totally chill, it's only ever been the boys on the come up who've been dicks. I remember some of those sweaty gigs at the Powerstation. I remember the first, and the guy next to me kept shouting "Stations" at the top of his voice between every song. I had no idea what he was talking about, but started yelling it too, swept up by his passion. Then they played Stations. Hot damn, what an epic tune live.
This lost clubs series has been really impressive, Shae. It'll be a valuable resource for years to come.
@@amcmartin Thank you very much!
I second this 💗

Brilliant series. Sort of thing NZ on air should fund.
@@hamcheeselettucemayosandwich I've applied for nzonair funding but didnt get it.
@@shae_sterling Disappointingly predictable decision, that.
Love the lost club series. DJ Sir-Vere, 48 Sonic and Jon Toogood have to be my favorites so far.. So many awesome memories from back in the day :)
PowerStation nothing else compares when that floor starts springing
PowerStations still going strong the Machine Head/Fear Factory show there this year was amazing
Love this Shae, awesome interview. I’ve always been a Shihad fan way back from the Devolve days! 🥳🤙

To think the concert was basically 20yrs ago. Unreal..
Glue pot times - got to play there, but also witnessed Shihad, HLAH, Push Push, Muttonbirds, Nikons, Chickens and so on

Imagine dragons were toddlers, they couldn't have played the gluepot
I believe he said "I imagine Dragon would've played here" as in 'April sun' and 'Rain'
