I just bought a new 2023 scl500 about 2 weeks ago, it was discounted at $4999 plus dealer fees, it was also what they called the adventure package, so it had a few accessories already, So I think that they are still some new 2023 models left at dealerships so there are possibilities to get a good deal on a new scl500 like I did Cheers!
@@LifeOfBurchWe've been using yours and Nina's videos for inspiration and help upgrading my girlfriend's 300 with the crash bars, rear rack and saddlebags. She's ready for longer adventures now. Dude you’re not crazy lmao, the rebel and the scl do sound different. Personally, I think the rebel 500 exhaust sound would fit the SCL so much better. I’m trying to figure out if it’s possible to do that. What a great video, thank you!🔥🔥
Scrambler, hands down. It's WAY more versatile. Adjust it to suit you. The aftermarket support is there if you look for it. New riders should pass a BRC, practice learned drills, and ride dirt, for at least an hour almost every day, for at least several weeks, before venturing out onto public roads with traffic. Riders with extensive dirt-riding experience are drastically under-represented in fatal crash statistics.
From what I can see doing a handful of research is that the SCL500 seems to be the bike that engineers wanted to make and the rebel 500 is the bike that they think will sell better in the US
Really good video for newer riders and the benefits of Honda's varied 500cc platform over the last 8 years or so. The one thing I thought of, and this could really be it's own video, is bar selection. You got into it a bit with the ergonomics with Nina's seat and riser adaptations. As part of the ergonomics, bar selection is huge and can introduce newer riders to all the types, adjustments but also how on some bikes, the bars might hit their legs or the tank in ways that are uncomfortable especially on slow speed maneuvering. I lean toward the SCL too as I started on dual-sports, buying my first bike at 14, I think it's completely normal to not be flat-footed but it helps that I grew to be a touch over 6 feet, I still miss the challenge I had as a kid. @11:05 but as Nina points out, plenty of people HATE that, I'm pleased she got some great aftermarket goodies for her bike to make it her own.
Thanks for this video. You compared the two bikes on my wish list. As a shorter guy, I think the Rebel is probably the better fit but I will try them both. 👍
Hands-down picking the SCL for the size/ride position. My ONLY hold up is the lack of storage options like you mentioned. I'm use to my Honda Trail w/ a big tail box full of camping supplies and tools. Trail tops out at 50MPH for me, so I need a larger/faster option for when I don't NEED all that storage. Hopefully getting an SCL by next year. Gives it some time to get a few more add-on options I hope.
I'm 5'2" so I love my Rebel 500 and its perfect for city riding (and parking, since I can touch the ground and back it into tight spots) but I still like to take it off road sometimes so I added a skid plate and crash bars to protect it but yeah, I'll probably need to do some suspension upgrades someday.
I have a 30in inseam and my trident has a taller seat than that scl. I can't flat floot both feet but find that 1 foot down is very comfortable. Just for anyone that really likes the scl but is worried about the seat height
It's my understanding that you're really only supposed to flatfoot 1 foot and keep the other on the back break when you're stopped. That being said, being similar in height to her, I would hate the KLR500 as well. I like the modifications to her bike as well. I just want a windscreen, saddle bags, back seat, and luggage rack. Not because I expect to take someone for a ride but because I want to be able to put groceries and/or my bags on it comfortably.
So to sum it up, the SCL is like hyper energetic husky that loves fun, and the Rebel is like a friendly little pitbull; content to sleep for hours next to you, and will go on walks excitedly but not really demand it? I mean at 6’4” I’m shivering at the thought of squatting my big ass onto the rebel, but it sounds like a great experience.
I wish the CL500 had dual analogue dials. That one round display in the middle looks awkward. I generally dislikes LCDs on motocycles. At least the ones that replicate a certain amount of "classic". Which I think both the Rebel and the CL 500 does.
20:01-one of those intersections where you have to be in the middle of it to see if it’s clear. You definitely want to slow your roll around those. Not necessarily the drivers fault.
You're not wrong about the exhaust pipes - the cat and the back end of the pipes are based from pipes of the 1100 Rebel (which has a very similar endcan). That'd explain the difference in exhaust note.
Absolutely love my SCL500. Comfortable, super light clutch pull, bike is light, fun, great on gas. What more could you ask for out of a fun day of riding? Throw the new Puig windscreen on it and it’ll highway all day
Glad to see you have a low mount on your SCL. I was waiting to see if anyone would do one and especially after seeing your Vance and Hines was kinda mehh for the price. That rust is no bueno for the price
The engine is the same, but aside from the cat, I'm pretty sure the cams are different too. Can't find the exact specs on the cams, but the OEM part numbers are different. That might explain slightly different power figures and sound.
Yea it looks like the SCL shares cams with the CB’s and not the Rebel. Interesting that Honda wouldn’t make note of that anywhere. All they say is the SCL is “Featuring the hugely popular and always-ready-to-deliver Rebel 500-based engine”. You’d think they’d word that differently if those cams made any difference 🤔
@@LifeOfBurch Maybe marketing decided the difference is not that important. And yes, the gearing is different - rear sprocket on the SCL is one tooth larger. Rear tire circumference is pretty much the same, so it's not for that. Oh, and the intake is different too.
Since you own both, do you think you could buy a Rebel and swap out the components that make a Scrambler and have it "fit" better? I actually like the "bobber" style in the rear that you can get from modifying the Rebel but I like everything else about the Scrambler style. Give me a nice 17/18" wheel in the back and a 19/21" wheel up front with Dual Sport tires and I am in love.
The scl500 is more versatile and for normal sized people gonna be more comfortable on longer rides for your hips and knees. I'd take the scl for myself.
@lifeofburch watching your videos over the last 1.5 years has inspired me to get one for myself to enjoy this side of life! I am going to make my decision next weekend on my first bike; I’m down to a Honda CTX700 or NC700 as a first bike and would really like to know any input or advice you have! I know my choices are not what you discussed in the video but getting a cheaper bike now with hopes to upgrade to the Rebel 1100 in a year or two in the future. Thanks for all the great content you put out here, I never miss a video!
I think it's odd that Honda took so long to come out with an accessible scrambler. I haven't looked at sales figures, but it seems like everyone's crazy about them, and they hit the floor already sold.
Rebel might be better for highway trips since the taller gearing will give you a lower rpm and the engine will feel more relaxed at freeway speeds. I suppose you could fix that problem on the SCL by a sprocket change so maybe it isn't that big of a deal.
I think I want to buy a used Rebel 500 for cheap and just put the forks and shocks from the Scrambler on it. I like the additional suspension travel of the Scrambler but I like everything else better on the Rebel.
I'm 6'2 and the Rebel 500 feels absurdly low to me. I think the Rebel only really makes sense for short riders, the CL is generally more versatile and a more "standard" bike.
I bought a new '22 500 Reb for my grandaughter. I would say 5' 8" is max for that. I'm 5' 11" and I'm miserable on that thing. Seat is a cloth covered plank too lol. Great bike tho.
Funny this is the exact thing I was looking for! Lol Ive been looking at bikes this past week and both of these got my attention. Im a 5'4" dude but with boots im two inches taller. My intended use is more for commuting but I would also like to use it for some nearby traveling (here in central California im two houts away from all the fun stuff). Im liking the Scrambler but ill have to try it out to see if it will work for me.
Awesome comparison dude! I’m with Nina… Rebel > SCL… SLIGHT’s Unbiased View ;) Yet you’ve hit the nail on the head with each of these bike’s strengths and weaknesses. I’d be curious to see how your SCL compares to my rebel (in spirited rides of course)
The SCL vs your Rebel in a spirited ride would be an interesting comparison! You definitely have the suspension advantage, no question there. The SCL’s suspension is better than the Rebel’s (stock vs stock), but it’s still a bit floaty through bumps, and obviously your suspension is muuuch nicer! Although I’d have a pretty decent lean angle advantage 🤔 Next time you’re in town you gotta take the SCL for a rip and see how ya like it! Maybe next LifeOfBurch meetup we all rent out a track?! 😳
@@LifeOfBurch I believe next LOB meetup we will be down for a few more days. I’m sure we can make something work. Again, great video. Smart as this comparison makes sense.
There is NO beginner bike for someone 6ft or over on the market, sure there is some 500-750s that MAY be considered beginner but let’s be real, they are not. 2 main reasons given for people that stop riding or don’t start riding motorcycles. Shifting gears and fit of motorcycles. Until this changes, motorcycles will not be mainstream like they should be.
Very informative video Burch, well done. I was wondering if you have to choose between CL500 and your rebel 1100 what your choice would be. If you can only have one? :)
Hehe, I just realized.. we need an SCL650 that has a 6gal fuel tank, and either a highly fuel efficient twin, OR a beefed up for reliability single cylinder like a XR650 has. If there was an SCL650 with a proper fuel tank size for "scrambling"/lightweight ADV style trips, Honda would have a true contender to rival the KLR650.
There are a lot of bikes that I could see being compared to the SCL500…and I can’t say that I’d imagine either the XR650 or the KLR650 ever being on that list 😂 It would be rad to see an SCL with the Transalp’s new 750 though I think! 😳
@LifeOfBurch oooh there ya go. And yeahno, SCL500 and KLR650 don't compare head to head at all. But same reasons to like the KLR650 can be found (almost) in an SCL500, seat height, LED headlight, high mounted exhaust, decent-enough ground clearance, quiet when idling, and dead reliable (I think SCL500 runs the Rebel 500 engine just tuned differently, I might be wrong though). But really.. I just want Honda to release a bike with EFI, 5+ gal fuel tank, and NOT 1000cc+ heavy bike like Africa Twin. So hey.. a road-oriented version of the XR650L engine but with EFI and a decent fuel tank size and hey... KLR650 finally has true competition. (T7 is not in same price market, XR650L last I checked still runs a carb, DR650 runs a carb, and iirc none of those bikes have 6 gallon fuel tank stock)
I prefer the design of the Rebel, but the CL500 may be the better option for me. I want a cruiser, but I'm your height. Unless I put those mentioned mods on it.
A great video, thanks. Just wanted to know if the CL500 can be lowered a bit so there isn't such a difference in the seat height. I had Rebel 500 which I loved and had my eye on the CL500 but I'm now worried it is too tall for me.
Never seen those SCL's until now, wouldn't know the difference as they look so similar lol. but I've been wanting a rebel for a long ass time and I still want one. Would prefer new but I can't even afford used which i'm willing to trade a Navi for any year lol ):
I want to put some more aggressive tires on my trident to be able to hit the gravel. But I think I'd really miss the cornering prowess it has in the mountains. So idk, looks like I just need a second bike 😂
The passenger seat is very uncomfortable on the Rebel 300-500. I don't know about the SCL, but I wouldn't take a passenger for such a long drive on my Rebel

I picked the cl myself. Rode them both and the cl just felt more comfortable to ride around on. Got the green 1.
I'm picking up my green CL tomorrow. I haven't ridden it yet, but I could tell it was the better fit for me just from sitting on it immediately.
I've been watching your videos for a long time man, I absolutely LOVE this content you've been putting out for years; I come from a Harley Family so my brothers and I have been always thinking that Harleys were our way to go, queue to like, 3 years ago when you put that 300 versus 500 video and i've been watching every now and again when you post and subscribed later on because you kept popping up in my recommended. anyways, I just wanted to say that i'm really thankful for you man and I kid you not, today, when i've been searching for a deal on a rebel 500 with abs showed up, i felt something in me that was like, "go for it" and I went to the bank, talked with my financial advisor, and i bought the bike today! Long message but, all in all, I appreciate you for all the content you make Burch, can't wait to watch your videos AGAIN and learn again from videos you've already posted for mods for the rebel 500
Yes 🙌🏾
Informative video, good job.... btw "The Rebel's just happy to have you here" should be in Honda's promotional material for the bike...lol
Waiittt a second…I think you’re onto something here! I can smell the royalty checks now! 😂🤘🏻
I just bought a new 2023 scl500 about 2 weeks ago, it was discounted at $4999 plus dealer fees, it was also what they called the adventure package, so it had a few accessories already, So I think that they are still some new 2023 models left at dealerships so there are possibilities to get a good deal on a new scl500 like I did
Cheers!
Just wandering I am newbie here where or what sites can I get a deal on scl500 ? Thanks
Can't wait to see you guys switch all the gear/mods from the blue 300 to the red 500. Time to sell and upgrade Nina's ride!🤙
You know it! Should be rad to see the change!! 🙌🏻
@@LifeOfBurchWe've been using yours and Nina's videos for inspiration and help upgrading my girlfriend's 300 with the crash bars, rear rack and saddlebags. She's ready for longer adventures now. I'm interested to see how well everything transfers to the 500 as that's something I could see her doing in the future
Edits are CLEAN!!
Thank you, today I learned a new term "utility", I'm still leaning to get the rebel, because I know myself
SCL for me but can’t go wrong with either imo 🔥 🏍️
On taller bikes, us short riders have to learn to hang our butts off the side to get a foot on the ground. Still easier to have a lower seat height.
Very clever sound check, the lazy low Rebel v the peppy Scrambler! Honda quality knows no bounds!
Wow man your editing has gotten so good. Video was great to watch as always.
165cm people, even with 28 insem can ride the SCL, 790mm of seat height is still a low value, compared to other modells.
Imagine the "older" lights of the Rebel on the CL. I guess that would look great 🙌
I see no reason why you couldn't swap it ..
@@leeinwis the build up is different. They look similar but I've also seen that you can't even use the seat of the new Rebel on the old one...
CL500. Better suspension, better body position, better handling, better ground clearance.
I’m not a cruiser fan, so I chose the scrambler. I can’t flat foot it, so I wear boots with a bit of a heel.
Absolutely love my SCL500. Comfortable, super light clutch pull, bike is light, fun, great on gas. What more could you ask for out of a fun day of riding? Throw the new Puig windscreen on it and it’ll highway all day
Agreed 100%!! Such a rad do-it-all bike! 🙌🏻
I just wish the scl500 and Hondas other 500cc line would have a tachometer like the cb500x does
Glad to see you have a low mount on your SCL. I was waiting to see if anyone would do one and especially after seeing your Vance and Hines was kinda mehh for the price. That rust is no bueno for the price
Can the Rebel mirrors be put on the SCL500? I really like how the SCL500 looks except for the mirrors.
Beautiful demonstration. Appreciate all the thoughtful efforts! 🙏💎🤗❤
I’m going for the NX500
I own a SCL500. But I think I like the Rebel 500 better than the Shadow.
Fantastic review. Thank you
The engine is the same, but aside from the cat, I'm pretty sure the cams are different too.
🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻 incredible review, what a great overall info about both 👌
Since you own both, do you think you could buy a Rebel and swap out the components that make a Scrambler and have it "fit" better? I actually like the "bobber" style in the rear that you can get from modifying the Rebel but I like everything else about the Scrambler style. Give me a nice 17/18" wheel in the back and a 19/21" wheel up front with Dual Sport tires and I am in love.
Great comparisons with 2 body types!!
Thanks!! 🧡
Im sold on the SCL, Beautiful
I think it's odd that Honda took so long to come out with an accessible scrambler. I haven't looked at sales figures, but it seems like everyone's crazy about them, and they hit the floor already sold.
Rebel might be better for highway trips since the taller gearing will give you a lower rpm and the engine will feel more relaxed at freeway speeds. I suppose you could fix that problem on the SCL by a sprocket change so maybe it isn't that big of a deal.
The SCL has 1 more tooth in the rear than the Rebel and the same size up front. They feel the same on the highway from a power perspective.
Even though I didn’t see any tacos in this video, it was still a good one. 😜🤘🏼
Take them both for a ride and make a decision based on how it feels
Excellent and Educational video , My Wife rides a 500 Rebel in black and loves it
ps. She is 5ft7 .
Awesome comparison dude!
I’m with Nina… Rebel > SCL… SLIGHT’s Unbiased View ;)
Yet you’ve hit the nail on the head with each of these bike’s strengths and weaknesses.
Although I’d have a pretty decent lean angle advantage 🤔
Next time you’re in town you gotta take the SCL for a rip and see how ya like it! Maybe next LifeOfBurch meetup we all rent out a track?! 😳
@@LifeOfBurch I believe next LOB meetup we will be down for a few more days. I’m sure we can make something work.
Again, great video. Smart as this comparison makes sense.
Great comparison video!
There are a lot of bikes that I could see being compared to the SCL500…and I can’t say that I’d imagine either the XR650 or the KLR650 ever being on that list 😂
It would be rad to see an SCL with the Transalp’s new 750 though I think! 😳
@LifeOfBurch oooh there ya go.
Very well presented. Thank you
You sold me on the SCL500 thankyou
I want the Rebel 500 for my first bike. Gonna be a few years though.
Good informative! Thanks . Just curious where can you recommend or sites ti buy a used rebel 500 or scl500 ? Thanks again I’m a newbie
Great video Burch !! 🤙🏽
LOL, 0:33 - the red bike has a surprised face made up of the engine :D Once you see it, you can't un-see it!
I haven't ridden a Rebel 300 or 250 on the road yet. I am curious on what the difference of handling and acceleration and gearing is.
Great vid man 👍 I really want an SCL500
I want to put some more aggressive tires on my trident to be able to hit the gravel. But I think I'd really miss the cornering prowess it has in the mountains. So idk, looks like I just need a second bike 😂
What about for a 5'11'' 320 lb guy haha. I was looking at the 1100 rebel.
good job syncing different angles
i was just asking the question this morning
Excellent vid!
I am also wondering how much better the suspension is on the facelift models of the rebels vs the Original Gangsters comparing stock vs stock.
3 hour journey with a passenger which bike you taking out of the two ?
The passenger seat is very uncomfortable on the Rebel 300-500. I don't know about the SCL, but I wouldn't take a passenger for such a long drive on my Rebel
