  • A couple weeks ago I bought a Honda Rebel 300 so my girlfriend could learn to ride motorcycles, and today is her first day on the bike! I showed her all the bike's controls, taught her the basics of riding a motorcycle, and then she hopped on the Rebel and gave it a shot!
    To teach her how to ride a motorcycle for the first time, we practiced walking with the bike to get a feel for it and then did some work on learning where the friction zone/engagement point of the clutch is. We were only out for about 40 minutes and she was already able to get the Rebel 300 rolling!
    She's taken my Honda Grom around the parking lot in first gear a couple times before, but this was her first time learning to ride a full sized motorcycle, and I think she CRUSHED IT!! For a beginner rider I was super impressed with how quickly she learned, even while being intimidated her first time on a bike just like we all were when we first learned to ride!
    This little Rebel 300 is honestly the PERFECT first motorcycle for her and I can't wait to watch her progress as we get to go out and practice more!

      Is this the first time you have ridden a motorcycle ? I assume that you are very comfortable peddling a bicycle around . I am 71 but I used to own a motorcycle in my youth , this Rebel motorcycle has renewed my desire to get one so I am somewhat in the same boat as you !

      Same here. Age 65 and just took my MSF course a couple of weeks back (20 days to be precise.) That was originally with the intention of getting licensed to ride a Vespa, but after learning the manual shifting, I'm now gunjy to consider a Honda Rebel as well. So I'll be building my skill set and confidence on the scooter and when I'm ready, I'll joing my Harley riding son with my own cruiser. At this point , Sonny Boy is riding with me. We do look the odd lot--a 1200 Sportster along a Vespa GTS 300. lol

    Probably one of the best and most informative vids you’ve done. Nina seems very self aware and sharp thru the process. Get her to use two fingers only on the levers to instill a better sense of control. Hope to see you guys on the road one day.

      @LifeOfBurch  2 роки тому +8

      Thanks man! Definitely plan on working up to just two fingers on the clutch, but it’s a bit hard for her to reach right now until we get some adjustable levers for her! Hopefully soon though 🤞🏻

      I remember in my MSF course they told me I did good, but needed to use all 4 fingers to brake. They didn’t deduct any points but mentioned it.
      I said ok but never planned on changing it. It just made more sense to me to do it that way.

    Nina all the feelings and emotions that you were going through were the same exact emotions that I’ve gone through so don’t let that hold you back. I’m still quite new to riding and get nervous every time I get on the bike and that’s a good thing because I think it keeps you alert. I’m looking forward to seeing day two of you learning to ride. If I may suggest which I’m sure you already know by now, please wear boots in case you drop the bike and it falls on you, you don’t want your feet to get smash/crunched. My first time on the bike just like what you did today, I came to a stop in the parking lot and forgot to put my feet down and down I went with the motorcycle on top of me and I was wearing tennis shoes. From that day forward every time I got on the bike to practice I always slipped my boots on. Good luck!

    She’s doing great! I would get her used to the clutch and friction zone by just duck walking the bike around the parking lot, no brake or gas. I’ve taught many, many people to ride that way successfully. No need to rush anything, she will be riding in no time

    • @LifeOfBurch
      @LifeOfBurch  2 роки тому +1

      Yup, that’s what we were doing! Some of the duck walking turned into foot dragging though because she’s so excited to just get her feet up and go! 😂 Love seeing how excited she is about it!

      Good for you. My wife is over 60 and she learned to ride on her Monkey. She was riding around the parking lot the first day. She passed her test on the first try she has a Rebel 500 now also. She actually likes the Rebel better because the seat height is lower than the Monkey. We wanted to get the same bike for her and me. That is why we got two 500s. It's perfect for her to learn on and still enough bike for me. Best of luck to you.

      @@womanhoodisnotacostume7648 I highly recommend the Honda Rebel 500. Any less cc and in a month or so you’ll wish you had the 500. They make the 1100 too, but the tank is a bit wider, which pushes your legs out a bit, and for me, made my feet reach a bit too much for comfort.

    Another great video Mike! I'll be retiring in another couple years and plan to get my motorcycle instructor's license. This video makes me realize how much we riders take for granted. What seems so simple and obvious to us is a TOTALLY new learning experience for new riders. It's great to see them "get it" and move on to the next level! 👍🏍

  • @ShaneWisecup
    @ShaneWisecup 2 роки тому +1

    Way to go to both of you. To me this is exactly how learning to ride should be. A patient kind and supportive teacher and a student taking their time getting familiar with everything and not getting in a rush while recognizing her fear and facing it at the same time using that normal and healthy fear to keep you safe. Best of luck on your journey learning to ride. I think this is a great video to help beginners start to understand what it’s like your first time on a bike. We were all beginners at one time and watching this video reminded me of my own similar experiences getting started in a parking lot getting to know my motorcycle. Keep the rubber side down and your knees in the breeze! Good luck and God Bless!

    I cannot thank you both enough for this video. I have watched a ton of “beginner how to” videos but most of them speak as if you already know stuff. I don’t. But to hear him actually speak and teach an actual person on a bike ( together with her POV ) it just felt like I, myself, am being taught firsthand. I love how she delved into the fear of the bike and him saying how most of that fear comes from people telling you how hard and dangerous riding is. I’ve been wanting to get a bike of my own but I’ve never driven one before at all. He was right to say that the internet needs these kinds of vids. I have learned more in this one vid than all the other ones. Not just motorcycle stuff but also the mental approach to it.

    I am planning on getting a rebel for my first bike and I needed this video. I did my M2 course but I learned on a bike similar to the Grom, so I feel her!

    As a new rider, who only has had my rebel 300 for 2 weeks and backpacker for 3 Mos before...this is incredible!! Thank you. I love this and the self talk is so true and nerves the comfort and encouragement patience is great. This helped me feel better with my clutch work. Woot! Go Nina and bro! Lol

    This is a good video. Hoping to see more. I took my beginner motorcycle class several weeks ago and I now have my bike. All the confidence I gained in those 2 days is gone and I feel like a noob again. Will use these videos for practice. Thanks for doing this series.

    This is excellent. I rode some bikes back in the day but never very fast. I’m planning on getting a new Rebel 300, and I’ve been pretty nervous about it. But this video is really great and helped to give me some confidence! You guys are great.

    Burch you are a great teacher. Nina you have great questions. It kept feeling like you guys were reading my mind about things that I wanted to understand and see visually like that gear chart. This is the best beginner video I've seen, I'm so goddamn excited to take a class and get on a bike.

    bro i needed this. little things i never knew like the shifting one gear at a time. i didnt know itd only go up or down one. that instills more confidence in me :) thanks bud and its almost been 6 months! im gonna check more recent vids and see how thngs are going but as a beginner i needed to see this
    btw man youre a good teacher i feel like she felt comfortable and more nervous about the bike than you taeching. a lot of teachers give off bad vibes with seeming annoyed or whatever and you did a great job letting her cuss and get the heebie jeebies out

    thankyou for this video! It helped take out some of my fears as I am looking to get my first ever bike either a 300 or 500. I can drive a manual car no problem but the shifting for a bike scares me. It was so nice to see another 1st timer. Most videos don't show this and this is very helpful.

    I don't often write comments, but this was such a good-vibes video. I don't know how I got here, but I just watched the video and felt good, props to Nina for being so reflected and chill.
    It is really interesting seeing someone learning to ride, and I'd love more of this stuff.
    Keep up the work.

    Awesome vid, been wanting to teach my wife to ride. When we met she told me as a girl she wanted to ride motorcycle but life gets in the way. I want to help her, but I think this vid can help her more than I can by showing her that she is not alone in her interest and fear of learning to ride. Great job to you both. Love the vids and the rebel. Was looking to pick up a Grom or Rebel 300 for the wife (and Me) as my old '86 1100 Sportster with no signals and drag clutch and carb do not make a good beginner bike. I will stay tuned for more!
