Porsche996 , Porsche 996 Turbo Brakes , Bleed Ceramic Brakes
Hi Everyone, We take a little "brake" from the 911 3.2 Carrera project to bleed the brakes on the 996 Turbo. Super easy and anyone can do this by themselves. The whole process should take an hour or so.
A word about the bleeder I used... The Motive Power Bleeder would not hold pressure. I even tried completely cleaning and using silicone grease, but the valve just gives way. I was able to get the job done, but there was a bit of having to pump and pump... I want to try the Schwaben Power Bleeder to see if it is any better.

I’ve watched quite a few tutorials on this subject and I have to say this is by far the best, clearly explained, not rushed and easy to understand. 😊
Franny, you're rocking those pearls during a brake fluid change. Impressive.
As an aeronautical engineer and petrolhead I can say your description was spot on and puts to shame most male you tubers that do this how to! You covered all the little details!
Love your videos. You really know your stuff and run through processes in a very clear and concise way. Great content.
Unbelievable quality of the show in all aspects. Thanks for the valuable information, which will be used as soon as possible when repairing my brakes.
Great tutorial. Logical, well organized, and easy to follow sequential set of instructions. I watched a bunch of UA-cam videos and found this to be the best. I.e., removing old fluid from the reservoir and replacing it with new/fresh fluid before you start bleeding, how much fluid to bleed out etc. Most other videos don't mention these important points. Also, I really like the way you use the Power Brake Bleeder unit to only pressurize the hydraulic system. A bit more work to keep adding fluid to the reservoir; however, it makes a lot of sense. Especially the cleanup process when the job is complete. Nice job.
Once again, a very detailed video.👍🇨🇦
Great tip on the wheel hanger alinement pin. I have used them on my Mercedes. Light bulb went off. I need to get a set to use my 315/70/17 wheels on my 80 series land cruiser. Changing those wheels on the trail is a strain. No longer. Thank you so much for making me rethink an application of the wheel pin.
Really well done. First video of yours that I've seen. Impressed with several aspects. Zero incorrect or false information, complete accuracy. Lots of hidden gems in the details. Quite good stuff. Thanks for your efforts
Thanks so much! Welcome :)
I've been thinking about doing my own brake flush for some time on my BMW but have been a bit intimidated by the process.
This is so helpful! Love you Fran.
You'll totally crush it!!
I've always wanted to do this to my car but didn't know how. This video gave me confidence and I'm going to tackle this job! Once again thank you for an excellent how to video! Keep up the good work ladies.
Good for you! Heidi and Franny are the best at explaining these How to procedures. Bar none!
I like the 2x4 under the jack! really clever way to prevent having to hassle with jacking then jack stands!
Thanks for another great 997 video. So clear, well filmed, pleasant, and as always informative! We love you Franny (and Heidi!)!
Love the ending with the pop-ups for Patreons. Hopefully many more will now join and support your channel. This is a great video. I spend a small fortune recently getting that work done at a Porsche certified service center (they did a great job for me on a couple other items too but it was expensive). Safe travels!
Hi David, glad you liked the shout-out. Thanks so much for all your support! Porsche certified can be a bit pricey, but you know the work is being done properly. It is important to add that to the mix :)
I feel confident that I could handle this job now! You guys have the best most informative automotive videos on YT, thanks again ❤️
Thanks! Trying to give the Master Chris Fix a run for his money ;)
@@HeidiandFranny Chris Fix is awesome. I have followed him for quite some time. You now have a new subsciber. Your content and video ability rocks. I am an old air cooled parts guy and remember the parts
used on the VW like it was yesterday.
Thanks a lot, best tutorial I've found on Porsche brake fluid bleeding.
I gotta say , I’m a pretty good wrench but I was always a little intimidated by my Porsche’s , I have to say I’ve learned allot by watching your vids and do allot of work on them now. . Thanks so much , I appreciate them.
Yea!
Nice, warm, friendly, personable DIY brake fluid service video. Great job.Thank you for making it.
Thanks so much!
I have seen a lots brake bleeder on UA-cam, and you are the best in every detailed you say and do. Thank you.
Thanks so much! That great :)
Wow, thank you! You did such a great job with this video, super thorough explanation and... omg, I love how CLEAN everything is~!
This was the most helpful video ever. No one fully explained it like you did. Thank you.
Thanks so much!
Really nice explanation, well done. I'm in the mood to do my brakes now!
Nice video- thanks for posting ! It’s time to flush brake fluid from my ‘81 SC. Nice touch with the anti-sieze on the lugs, I was really spreading it on pretty thick - I’ll just use a small amount now! Keep up the good work .
learn a lot from you every time and love that you are quite thorough. love you!
Thanks Franny and Heidi!! I'm about to do this in preparation for a track day in my 997 C4. Great video!
Good video! Used my Motive Power Bleeder two months ago -- did new brakes pads rotors, flush -- and clutch bleed. Power bleeder made job so simple... not so for the frozen rotor bolt that took seven hours to remove with torch, rust breaker fluid, and MUCH patience. Love the channel, waiting for more 911 resto vids...
Oh my... Chris Fix demo-ed a heated coil tool that looked like it would work really well for something like that. Next time I come up against something like that I want to give that a try...
very informative as usual, enjoy your updates 😊
You guys are amazing. Not sure if most folks could do that in an hour, but if they watch your video, hopefully they'll only have to do it once! Great job!!
Thanks man!
Dot 3 and dot 4 are mixable. Dot 5 can’t be mixed with 3 and 4 but 5.1 can be mixed with dot 3 and 4.
"like a bunny..." "...vessel" "...just a kiss..." THATS why I LOVE this Lady! She speaks My language. Getting more and more adventurous and doing some of My own car repairs and learned SOOOOOOOO much. THANKS!!!
wow these videos are ridiculously good. Thanks for sharing
Love you! thank you for all your years of help on my 3.2
Nice job. Thorough and professional video that reveals your obvious competency. I agree with your premise for using the Power Bleeder 'dry.' As you said, it prevents potential contamination of the brake fluid while keeping the unit 'pristine' - making its subsequent cleaning unnecessary.
I'm looking to buy a 996TT (after saving for Many years) and I know I'll have to do a lot of servicing myself. While I'm comfortable working on cars I was feeling a bit intimidated because it's a Porsche. Your videos are a Huge help in this regard. Your presentation, accuracy of information and video quality are all top notch. I also really appreciate that you put all the info on tools and materials used into the description, getting the benefit of your experience and research makes servicing these cars much more accessible for the average car enthusiast.
The best video on brake fluid flashing I have see!
Wow, thanks!
Nice video, good clear explanation. My BMW dealership quoted me $290 for a brake flush on my 2018 X3. I figured I could do it myself and just purchased the Schwaben 3 Liter pressure bleeder plus free catch bottle on sale for black Friday. Looking forward to doing it myself. You have some fine cars, I had leased an i8 from 2016 to 2019, almost bought it at the end of the lease but didn’t want to own such a complex vehicle as it aged, so decided to return it at lease end. Exceptional car in many ways, I miss it.
Anyway, thanks for your many helpful videos.
I made a bleeder from a ''weed'' sprayer and a pressure gauge from Home Depot and and extra reservoir cap. Works great and it was cheap.
Great job Franny! Super attention to detail.
Ya know, I think that is great solution! I bet you can get it pumped up much faster. Great tip! Thanks!
Thank you ladies for making these great diy videos. Y'all are amazing
You bet! Thanks so much :)
I don't own a Porsche but I 💕 how you know everything about everything...AND the pearls! I just found your channel today and my new muse(s)! Thank you!
Awww, how sweet :) Welcome!!
This is a great video, very well done. I will say I did this job recently on my C2S, and I recommend just filling the bleeder with fluid. This keeps the master reservoir full the whole time, and you don’t have to remove the cap on and off that way. Great advice on bleeder valve to not over-tighten them. Super smart to ceramic coat the wheels at the same time since you have the wheels off. I did the same thing. I wish my wife was into cars like this, your skills are impressive, and your interest in performance cars is not normal for a female, and that’s fantastic. I would watch more of your videos, love your attention to detail😊
Fantastic video. Man, I bet you have an amazing garage and tools.
Excellent expounding of brake fluid bleeding. Thanks
Great job Franny. You always make it look so easy. I may have to tackle this on my Porsche someday.
It will be fun :)
Well done, clear and concise.
very very well explained...definitely knows her stuff.subbed!
Great tutorial
Very detailed. Thank you.
Nice video, Franny. Thank you! 👍👍
Awesome! Thanks for the shout out at the end :)
Sure!
Very detailed video and informative. I really enjoyed it. Thank you, please continue to make these awesome videos!!!
Will do! I'll try to give Chris Fix a run for his money :)

Thanks for answering my question on Instagram with my oil. Love your channel. You ladies are awesome.
Thanks RA!
Well done. Thanks!
Hi Heidi, I really enjoyed this video. You were very formative and I will be subscribing and checking out your other videos, Have a great day 😅
Thanks so much!
YOU ARE THE BEST. Thank you.
using the pump only for providing pressure is a very nice trick!
Thanks for the video!
You are wonderful on details
I'm so grateful for this episode and your channel in general. My mechanic told me not to worry about the brake fluid on my '09 Jaguar XKR, even though the manual said it should be flushed at 60k. I'll just start doing it all myself. You guys are such an inspiration!
I always thought good brakes were good insurance. Great job!
Very informative and super helpful.
Thanks John!
Much respect!
I met Heidi this evening at the Porsche 992 release event in Denver. It was a pleasure meeting her in person! I wish you and your channel lots of luck! Keep up the great work.
Thank you. It was nice meeting you as well. Feel free to email us at our website. Were you wanting to see Ozzie and Zeke's channel? They would love to have you visit. Heidi
Great video! Thanks!!!
Thanks for a great video. You don't mention this, so perhaps a different set up on newer cars. I ran into an issue with my '87, when I pressurized the reservoir, it has a pressure relief valve located on the fender side and blew brake fluid all over the inner fender, not happy face. I put a screw into it then it held pressure and I was able to do my brake fluid bleed. Thanks again for the great videos, keep em coming.
Great video wonderful person you explained it all so well😮
Well done. *thumbs up*
Thank you for this video now I know how to use the self bleeding system now I always wondered. How do you use that tool and now you’ve answered that question thank you. I’m hoping they sell this on Pelican Parts.
Well done,
What a joy to view your videos, to see your garage and tools, and experience what it's like to maintain beautiful modern cars. I am learning to maintain my three vintage cars-all with German engines: 2003 VW Jetta, 2000 Ford Explorer, and 1982 Audi 4000S diesel. Should I be afraid to tackle a 1987 Porsche 924? Any caveats about that model year? Also, I purchased the Schwaben pressure brake bleeder and will try it on my Audi today!
great job thanks
Wow. you are GREAT!!
Thanks!
Perfect ! exactly the way i do it myself :) I love to see that you use the original Porsche wheel pins, 1 tip ; or if you really want to go nuts.. use a special socket with plastic cover to minimize scratching on the wheel-nut holes on the rims, i love this detailed videos, and 1 more comment; looks like the interiour in the 996 Turbo need a proper detail, i could see some dust and dirt ! HAHAHA
I need to get a 19mm socket like that... You bet. -- I did shake out the mat ;)
Nice vid. I would add one thing .PFC racing ( supplier to 991 cup brakes) and most people I've talked with who race Porsches at the pro level ( Daytona 24, etc) would bleed the inner caliper bleed screw and then the outer caliper bleed screw for the best chance of removing any air you may have.
Thanks for the tip!
New video on my new phone... Lol
As always great video
Hope y'all have a great rest of the week.
By the way, can't wait for motor removal!!!!
Hi Heidi and Franny. I’ve just 3 month ago got a 996 na 2001 same colour as your turbo. That’s one of the reasons why I’m back to your canal. Best Regards. Jørgen in Copenhagen.
Enjoy your 996!
I do all ready
Ella es excelente mecánico es bien profesional y le gusta trabajar en un ambiente limpio de cinco estrellas el mejor video que he visto y bien explicado paso a paso
Thank you.
I wish Super Blue Fluid was still made. It was so easy to see when you got fresh fluid coming out.
That would be nice.
Right?? Why do all the fluids HAVE to be the same color?
@@HeidiandFranny It's illegal in the US to sell any fluid that's not colorless or amber in color according to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. It took them 15 years to realize ATE Super Blue was indeed blue. LOL hooniverse.kinja.com/braking-news-ate-super-blue-illegal-for-u-s-distribut-1153557989 It's so silly as the only difference was a bit of blue dye.
Thanks very interesting. I became interested in how the braking system worked as at the weekend I found a family of 4 mice had built a home in the front trunk under - I think - party of the braking ABS system. They were all re-homed to a friendly nearby tree. Clearly I am not using the car enough.
We found a (rather dead) mouse in the engine bay of the 993 and the vents of the 3.2 Carrera. That is super common... They can be hard to keep out. I hope they didn't cause too much damage...
i really enjoy your video and tutorial
Yea! Thanks so much!

if you can show us for Audi if you have please
Another Great video. I am getting some brake fluid accumulate below my passenger rear tire after a recent brake service from my indy, started off small but now it's lost enough to throw off my PSM and brake fluid level CELs. I inspected the nipple and it appears to be closed securely so now I am trying to determine if there is an issue in the brake line that is close to caliper (pool collects under the tire). Do you have a suggestion to trouble shoot that? And after watching this video I will never take my car in for another brake service!
Ceramic coating the inside of the rim?!? Genius idea!!!
Us with common cars do not have those cool bolt extensions, but I could make some myself and just weld some extra bolts to some old ratchet extensions - or just wish I had a Porsche!
Try out a Schwaben bleeder. Worked better than Motive for me. Also, bleed with some fluid in the bleeder bottle to keep it full while going to each wheel. At the end, empty the bleeder bottle and let air lower the reservoir level to the correct height on the last wheel bled. Cheers!
@@frankm5019 thank you. somehow I missed that! Edited my comment...
Cute...thanks for the info....
DOT 5.1 and DOT 4 are backward compatible with DOT 3, and can be freely mixed. DOT5 is a specialised, silicon based fluid and must not be mixed or used with any other fluid .
Mind blown
Solid job as always :) You can't be too careful with brake fluid. These wheels are hollow spoke aren't they? You did a great job on cleaning them :)
They are the real deal! So much lighter than the winder rims (those are knock-offs). Makes getting them up and down off the rack much easier ;)
Another culprit of low pedals, at least with domestic vehicles is when you replace the power brake booster...the replacements have adjustable rods, and you have to use a special tool to ensure it sits flush with the master cylinder piston cup, otherwise you'll be chasing your tail trying to figure out why your pedal is soft, but you have no trapped air or fluid loss. Also, if you replace the master cylinder, it must be bench bled, before installing. I love your videos, especially the Beetle vids. My '73 SB is still waiting for its engine, and I'm waiting for my shoulder to heal from surgery.
Get well soon!
Is one liter of Dot 4 enough for a full flush on a Boxster S? Great videos. Keep up the great work!
Yet another nice video from you guys. Thanks! Is there no published torque spec for the bleeder bolts on the caliper? It seems like it would be a good idea to snug down the bolts, remove the bleeder tube and THEN torque to final spec. It's a German thing!
This is coming from a mechanic who grew up not using torque wrenches. BUT I just know in this scenario I'd be wondering, "Is this as tight as it was when I undid it???" Instead of guessing, torquing would end any uncertainty. Just my $.02.
Very good point! Every bolt has a torque spec. I certainly could have tightened it enough to get the tube off without spilling or letting in air and then go back and torque. Good catch!
Ha-Now I know why Porsche is charging so much for this service. Great video👍
Hi great and detailed video.
I'd like to flush my brake system and change to Dot5 fluid. is there anything I should flush through the system to make sure I get all the old fluid out, Like the natured alcohol or break clean, cause I know. 5 is not compatible with other brake fluids
Noticed you have Techno twists in front and Turbo twists in back? Why's that? Love your videos btw! Super approachable!
You have done excellent well thought out videos. When I watched you suck out the old fluid, I said to myself, real smart. if you had not extracted the old fluid and just used new fluid from the pressure container, you would have wasted that much more new fluid. besides less time as well. Question, what do you think of the speedy bleeder valves you can replace the originals with a speedy valve with a built in anti air back flow allowing only one person to do the job and less air? Reolywhen you have time.
I haven't used them... You would need to use thread tape on them so they don't suck air back in through the threads. Maybe easier to use one of the pressure bleeders if it is a more modern car.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ thank you so much for this wonderful video! I’ve been wanting to learn how to do this in a clean manner. I’m so happy to have discovered your channel!
Yea!! Welcome :)
Can't fault anything you've said, but a bit basic for me. Keep up the good work!
Great Video as always... so informative and well detailed... did this car have Porsche Stability Management (PSM)? I'd be interested in your thoughts on bleeding and flushing the brakes fitted with PSM as my 2010 Boxster has it.. for the systems with PSM, the guides i've read say I need a PTS2 or PIWIS to activate the hydraulic valves in the brake system while bleeding. I've never seen any videos that do this and some of the forums I've read say its not necessary to clear the small amount of fluid trapped in the hydraulic valve. Thanks!!
That's a great question. The 996 didn't have it so no issue there, but our '06 987 had it and back then I took it to the dealership (they were great about other things so I was fine with that). But the i8 does has active suspension and a similar setup. I looked into it for that and found the same as you did. If you are tracking your car then it might be worth it to open up all the valves and flush everything, but for normal use there just isn't enough there to make a real difference. My suggestion is just to do it yourself every other year and I think you'll be fine. That is my plan for the i8 :)
@@HeidiandFranny - thanks for the response. I have no plans on tracking my car, so that was my thought too, but always nice to get some confirmation. I know that at least one the OBD2 scanners that have Porsche specific modules say they support PSM brake bleed activation, but the documentation is so bad on them its hard to know what it is actually doing. :) Anyway, thanks again for sharing your thoughts, i really appreciate it.
@@HeidiandFranny Hi - I think you've answered the question but please confirm: I can flush my own brake lines, per your video, but every other year have a shop with a PTS2 or PIWIS flush them to ensure they occasionally get fully bled. Is that correct? I hope so.... Thanks for your help - great videos btw!! (I have a 2003 996 C4S with PSM and I don't track my car )
