Crossing Borders: The Human Impact of the Wall (US/Mexico)

  • With over 350 million legal crossings every year, the U.S Mexico border is the busiest land border on earth.
Shot in stunning 4K and narrated by the 2018 Emmy® Award-winning actor Matthew Rhys, this compelling series explores six of the world’s most iconic walls and borders. It features the wall between the US and Mexico, the Korean DMZ, the Israel-Palestine Separation Barrier, the walled communities in Northern Ireland, Cyprus’ Green Line, and the now demolished Berlin Wall.
From the crumbling ruins of ancient walls to brick barriers that are currently under construction, each episode uncovers the human stories behind these walls and asks why they were built, how they affect people’s lives, and what happens when the walls come down. This is a series about hope and unity in the face of division and about the triumph of the human spirit in spite of separation.

It shouldn’t be controversial to say that countries have the right to protect their borders. The concept is as old as civilization. China, India, Spain, Israel, and Hungary all have border walls and no one bats an eye

It's not. It's when tanned people, legal people who look like they might be illegal are all lumped into the same assumption (that they are bad and illegal). That's where the problem is. Just like the mob who said blue lives matter and at the same time hit a cop over the head with a fire extinguisher killing him. It's the same people who cant or refuse to make the distinction.

Exactly. It’s illegal. It has nothing to do with being a racist. Respecting the law isn’t racist. Drugs, criminals, want to just hide out in the USA. What? You can't get benefits without valid ID (at minimum). In most states you have to jump through a massive number of additional flaming hoops to qualify and keep things like EBT, TANF, etc. There will always be the random abuses of the system but that's the exception, not the rule. America's also the 2nd hardest country to be approved for SSI/Disability on EARTH. Stop spreading misinformation and worry about the real drain on our tax money: corporate welfare.

@@MsNooneinparticular Fact: Family comes to organization seeking help. Mother has three children and pregnant with 4th. She wants to have more babies. She can't receive benefits, but every single one of her children can and does. Each child receives free health care insurance and each child receives at least $192 each month in food stamps and free school lunch. Husband makes at least $500 to $700 each week tax free. Some of these families come in numerous nonprofits and receive free item's, then take these items to flea markets to sale. I've seen children born and raised in this country with zero health care coverage because their parents "make to much" to qualify. There are so many here legally paying taxes and they feel the same exact frustration. I've seen it firsthand. Point blank-come to the US legally. These kids born in the US to parents who are here illegally, that's on the parents, not the US. One of the issues people have with Latin American illegals is their refusal to learn the English language. If English wasn’t so important to U.S. society, then why are English courses mandatory in schools? You have to test your English school-taught skills to graduate. We aren’t being forced to learn Spanish in the U.S. True, the U.S. is made up of different cultures but when you come to a country that has a dominant language then you have to be willing to learn it. If U.S. citizens moved to Latin countries, they would expect us to speak Spanish no matter what. If we moved to China, they would expect us to speak Chinese. For illegal Latin American citizens to come to the U.S., and refuse to learn the dominant language of English, then that is where a lot of U.S. citizens feel insulted. Some jobs are now requiring Spanish as a skill in order to be employed. It’s a mess in my opinion.

You have to have a work visa if you want to come to the USA and work. Likewise, as Americans, we need a passport to go anywhere in the world, but that doesn't give us permission to work in any country we want. Everything evolves around doing things legally. Not even Americans can go anywhere and do as they please.
We welcome ANYONE to America, it just needs to be done legally. It's not that hard to comprehend.

All countries have problems and if those people are leaving there countries to cross the border, it is not the problem of the US to deal with their government. If you are avoiding persecution in your own country and you want to cross, then apply for asylum and always remember there is a system. You cannot rush someone’s system and rules. Here's an idea? Each border has "United States Citizenship Application" forms and you easily just walk up to the border and fill one out. Give the Border Patrol/Homeland Security up to a week to vet the information you provide. By checking for any criminal past, run fingerprints, etc. If you're clean in all those aspects than I don't see an issue with allowing entry as a U.S Citizen, temporary citizenship, and or a month visitation into the country? Next step would be to send each person who applies to a school that teaches United States values, English (If they don't already speak it), how to get legal jobs, housing, education, etc. Set each applicant up for success. Maybe even setup an entire town for new applicants coming into the country (if they don't already have family on the USA side) for temporary residence until they get on their feet.

I don't know why people or migrants and entire foreign governments criticize the US policy on the southern border. "HELLO" every country has the right to protect its borders, culture, language, heritage, laws, etc. Many countries send to the US those in need instead of taking responsibility with their own nationals. Why criticize what Washington decides to do ??? Mexico is the loudest country in this issue. "What Mexico is doing to prevent thier citizens from leaving Mexico" ??? As well as other countries "what are those governments doing to prevent massive migrations" ???. Perhaps they want America to support thier corrupt institutions ??? Why criticize America for laws passed to protect America's borders ??? The US has all the right to do what they feel like when it comes down to choose who comes here or not !!! "HELLO"
Why not complaining in their own countries against those corrupt politicians or governments for their levels of corruption that force them to find other sources of survival ???.
The solution is not wether crossing the border or not. The real solution is to make Justice in your own turf. Stop crying for the resolutions taking in Washington. The root of the problem is YOUR OWN GOVERNMENTS ???

I feel bad for the families that made bad choices to enter into a country illegally . Maybe they should have weighed out the consequences and chances they were taking .....by entering a country illegally. I'm not saying they are all criminals but criminals don't do things legally.

Some Individuals are ignorant. No one should be separated from their families. Last time I checked, we are all human. Your ancestors migrated to America too. Part of the US belonged to Mexico.
